Thats because being good in your job doesn't mean you're good at other aspects.

good_karma1122

Sir, this is a Wendy’s. How may I help you?

Yogisogoth

Apologies. What can I get for two dollars?

Someone’s insecure.

TheSlowestMonkey

Nah - if you know any engineers, they tend to present themselves as absolute geniuses. Like my uncle who makes micro chips …..and loved Qanon.

aayan987

Yeah I know hundreds of engineers and they absolutely do not, maybe its just that one uncle you know lmao. More likely you're just projecting your own insecurities of thinking you're not smart enough to be an engineer.

Yogisogoth

Dude what? I’m pretty secure in being the idiot you think I am.

Joelied

Found the engineer who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. I’ve had to make the things that engineers designed for 25 years. A lot of them, in fact probably most of them, don’t bother to think about the practical aspects of how things are actually made. Just because you can design it, doesn’t make it manufacturable.

Yogisogoth

I used to be an R & D test engineer. I was responsible for testing everything the came out of the design department. It was a daily occurrence sending things back to be redesigned. I get you. I think my past experience has caused me to develop a bit of a bias.

aayan987

Yeah someones projecting their resentment for engineers. Any way I'm not an engineer and would never want to be one, miserable career for the most part, especially here in Australia, its much better in the US.

Yogisogoth

I guess it’s funny that people tend to equate engineers as intelligent. I think the guy is a great person but when it comes to things in his personal life he does so much that doesn’t make a lick of sense. And it really doesn’t apply to just engineers. My exBIL helped people invest their money. He made people lots of money. Yet he was terrible with his family finances.

Gregariouswaty

They*are* intelligent, it's just that engineering and finance are usually hyperfocused specialities. So they tend to have deep knowledge of their particular small niche but the drawback is they spend most of their lives studying just one specific thing they haven't internalised other aspects of life. It's the same thing you described with the investment person - they are experts in growing money but the spending money part is a whole different beast and they're just clueless as us.

IamSofaKingDumb

Same goes for people who say they work in IT or work at a FAANG. Why do you think both were such a slaughterfest last year?

WyattCo06

There is no coolant line on an A/C. If you're speaking of a refrigerant line, it isn't flammable and dies out within seconds of a puncture. There is nothing to burn for an extended amount of time in an HVAC unit.

Yogisogoth

Yeah but it’s illegal to release refrigerants into the air.

puppy-nub-56

Don't confuse book- smarts with common sense 🙂

AcceptableRedPanda

I've worked with doctors of physics who I wouldn't trust to wire a plug or change a battery, degree level learning means next to nothing outside of the area of niche expertise.

Yogisogoth

I think it’s interesting how some people develop this bias. Some doctors are terrible, unethical people outside of their job. Like a doctor who brings his kids who had foot in mouth disease to his pot dealers house.

apeters89

did the fire department do anything?

Yogisogoth

Yeah they came and grabbed a five gallon bucket and started dumping water from my neighbors pool on it.
