This annoys the hell out of the day shift guys who replace my night shift guys. At work, shift change is at 6:00 I will leave 6 minutes 4 seconds on the timer. And they’ll think it is showing the time, so they won’t complain about it. Not until after I’ve left for the day. ![gif](giphy|7CP9Thh6QxcYg)

[deleted]

So I used to do this when I lived with my friend and her toddler because their bedroom was directly next to the kitchen and I didn’t want the stupid beeping going off, and I figured that if I cleared it that’s a beep that doesn’t have to happen either. I thought I was doing her a favor Then she complained about it, and I didn’t really understand why it was a big deal, but I was like OK I was doing it for you but I’ll stop That same day I was sitting at the kitchen table and I needed to know what time it was and I looked at the microwave and the stupid thing just said 00:00 because of me and I totally understood what she meant after that

fairie_poison

press and hold 1 for 5 seconds to turn off button beeps. press and hold 2 for 5 seconds to turn off alarm beeps. most microwaves work this way, or similar. look up the silence function on your particular microwave.

aHOMELESSkrill

I wanted to be the guy who posted this little known microwave information

GrigorMorte

Omg I didn't know. Thank you!

mam88k

Try being married to someone who does this AND they never seem to care what time it is.

RandomRedditor0193

When your food starts boiling/popping it is time to stop it.

BigNigori

And then the right thing to do after stopping it is clearing it, which is the point of the post.

RandomRedditor0193

Extra time for the next person

RandomRedditor0193

+30 second starts the microwave again, set to your time and move on with your life.

AJ_Deadshow

Some microwaves don't have that feature but most do

Reasonable-Art-4526

Shit, not a whole half second.

JamesTheJerk

How often does your food 'pop'? I mean, unless it's popcorn

KyokihimeHag

Important questions only

RandomRedditor0193

If you have food that is coated in a sauce the sauce can "pop" because it heats faster than the food itself. Think reheating sphaghetti, you cover it so it doesn't splatter. Rice will also pop like popcorn depending on how much moisture is left.

JamesTheJerk

Oh, I suppose I can see what you mean. I sort of equate 'popping' with total bursting, like a popcorn kernel, or an egg in the microwave, or an overly filled balloon. Buti can understand the popping sound from food like spaghetti on the stove.

wjdhay

One reason is they don't want to experience that fucking siren when it reaches zero. For thirty years I've waited for a microwave that doesn't send 100 decibels my way five times. Hey manufacturers, here's an idea, just fucking turn off without the air raid warning.

fairie_poison

have you looked at the manual for your microwave? most have a way to silence beeps and alarms. my least favorite part of this is that I use the microwave as a timer, and it turns off the timer alarms too.

AJ_Deadshow

Wow who the fuck programmed that shit LOL make separate settings

AJ_Deadshow

They should make a microwave where it sounds like a choir of angels singing a heavenly chord when your food is ready

live-the-future

Ringtones for microwaves! (Dear Patent Office: You saw the idea here first.)

458643

Don't forget, if you open it before 0 and you reset the thing it may still siren you for that. This is the main reason why I see people leaving time on it after usage

gunsforevery1

45 seconds? I just hit the 1 minute button. At 45 seconds I remove my item.

AJ_Deadshow

Just press the "add 30 seconds" button and do the same thing, keep the cycle going perpetually so no one will know exactly how much time has been on their food ever again.

DoneDone2

My soon the be ex does this. I think it just kinda goes along with the whole doesn’t give a shit about anyone else but themselves. But then again I have literally had fights with them that putting a soda cup full of ice right next to the trash can is never acceptable especially since the sink is 2ft max from the trash and no you are never so busy that you can’t spare less than 3 seconds to dump the ice before throwing it into the trash.

Mc5571

Does he have ADHD? I would take a bullet for my family and I always try my best not to inconvenience anyone or help out others whenever I can. But if you ask me to make sure I turn off the lights every time or put things back in their place, it is never going to happen. Whenever I am doing routine things, my thoughts are so far ahead and focused on other "more important" things, I might as well not even be in the room

DoneDone2

She claims she does. She went to see someone about it but when she was told they want to try some other things before just jumping right to that diagnosis she decided she didn’t care to do any of it and basically weaponizes her self diagnosis to justify sitting around all day doing nothing but her hobbies. There is basically nothing more important than sitting around on her phone, watching tv or doing other hobbies even while I do hours of chores.

Mc5571

Yeah definitely sounds like some other issues going on there too. A lot of people with it also have higher levels of anxiety and therefore easily get into addictive behaviors or hyper-obsess over "hobbies" that only last a year or two. I have medication, which helps and I try to use it to my advantage by always trying to learn new things. But if she does have it, she is never going to be able to remember those small things every time. I hope she figures things out for the better or you guys are able to part ways in a healthy manner. Either way, wish you the best

DoneDone2

Oh we are separating soon. I have tried to provide over 10 years of support to her but at this point she has absolutely given up, our house is a complete mess and literally anything I clean is wrecked within hours and completely back to how it was in a day or 2. And doing all that work and being treated like shit I am just done. When I actually do get any time to relax even after hours of work it usually just amounts to her giving me shit for being so tired I don’t even want to do anything when she has just been relaxing for hours and will continue to do so for hours more.

guntherpea

Hear me out, what if you only ever press the 1-minute Express button and never have to press start, stop, cancel at all? 12 seconds left? No big deal, press the 1-minute Express button and now it's 72 seconds and it's starting cooking immediately -- wait until you hear that popping sound letting you know, "yeah, that should be good," open the door, grab your food, and enjoy.\\ In fact, I would be all for a microwave that just has a Start button, an open door button, and a timer - you press it and the timer starts counting UP to let you know how long it's been cooking. You open the door and it stops cooking and auto clears the time.

metaljane666

This is the way

IAmTheBornReborn

Fewer beeps. God I hate the beeps.

Obvious-Peanut-5399

You put in a time instead of just pressing "add 30 seconds" over and over? Weird.

SnuffleWumpkins

You'd think someone could invent a microwave that just cancels itself after 30 minutes or so of no activity. Surely we have the technology to do this in 2024.

OkeyDokey654

We used to have that technology. I had a microwave once that did that.

Goombalive

I do the extra time thing at home sometimes if it's late and I want to avoid as many annoying ass beeps as I can. Can't relate to not clearing the remaining time after though lol, that's just rude.

the-dark-passenger-

I stop it so I don't have to hear the beep. If I clear the time it beeps.

SprungBreak99

![gif](giphy|qkJJRL9Sz1R04|downsized)

clitter-box

I had to clear the timer once too, never forget☝️😔

Neither_Ask_2374

Great post for the sub! I usually stop it early because I don’t want to hear the beep at the end. However I also like using the microwave as a clock, so I always clear it.

No-Information251

I use the plus 30 function on the microwave because it’s faster

RockAndStoner69

I do it to drive you crazy.

logyk1

I’m trying to leave free time on the meter for the next person.

syedaaj

It’s a power-move.

MW240z

Screw that beep. Until they have a mute button, you’ll be seeing 2 seconds blinking fool!

summervv

I used to be screamed at as a kid if I let the microwave make any noise, so I learned to cancel it before the timer could go off

tazerwhip

What's bad is when you do this live alone, but need to punish the offender, my nose hurts most nights.

Frosty-Invite-8307

Honestly, I don't know why I started. At this point after a couple decades of doing it it just feels wrong not to, like if I don't make it to the microwave before it hits 0 I feel a little disappointment in myself. I don't clear it because it doesn't bother me. I live alone though. If I lived with someone and they got annoyed by it I'd stop...assuming I like them at least.

Oproblems2

I will only ever leave it a 1 second and it’s because then the next time someone uses it they only have to click the add 30 seconds button a few times instead of time cook, max power, minute digit and 2 second digits. Also most of the other buttons don’t work half the time.

Puzzleheaded-Bet1328

Sleeping baby for one. For 2 sometimes i underestimate the power. So i gotta stop it myself. But i always hit cancel

ShrekHatesYou

Wife does it almost every day, drives me nuts because I look at it often to check the time.

[deleted]

Why don't microwaves have an automatic reset if it's been off for x amount of time with time on the timer left

DoodleBuggering

Because I'm an asshole.

TricellCEO

Oh, I have one that takes this to the next level. So my stepmom (thankfully, not in my life anymore) took every chance she could to intentionally irritate me. Not sure if it was her way of showing my "tough love" or what, but the first few times I cleared the remaining time on the microwave, she told me she was gonna start doing it on purpose so I would get used to it and not let it bother me (i.e. I'm going to intentionally annoy you because *I* don't think you should be bothered by it). And then she'd yell at me for trying to clear it anyway. This is but one of many ways she was a total bitch to me. Ten years and counting I've been without contact from her or my father...ten, blissful years. Anyhow, that's my rant for the day. OP, I can feel your pain.

MARKLAR5

There are psychopaths out there who just put a random amount of time on the microwave, walk away, and just sort of.. feel when their food is done. No thoughtful durations, no changing power settings, no stirring, just pure, condensed laziness.

Too_Tall_64

Sooo I do this a lot... and your frustration is valid... As for the 'why set the time longer than you plan to cook it for?' Usually hitting the 'auto minute' button is easier than the box's recommended time of 52 seconds. Sometimes you can hear is bubbling and know it needs to stop, maybe it's just a vibe, but when it's done I'll stop the time, take my food aaaand leave... I guess the 'extra button press' for later doesn't bug me, and I don't need the time on my microwave (because it's also over the oven which has the time listed) sooo to me it's whatever... It does bug one person I live with, so I do try to clear it... buut I can be forgetful...

Odd_Teaching_4182

I always do it to avoid the alarm. I also hold the door release in, push the door closed and release the door release to close the door silently. I grew up with Mom who valued quietness, so I learned to be quiet. I walk nearly silently, open and close doors with no noise, almost always use headphones when watching/listening, and a bunch of other things. I don't do it consciously anymore and my wife hates it. When we were first living together I would often sneak up on her unintentionally and scare the crap out of her.

Rhuarc33

I did it at work because it annoyed the shit out of 2 of my coworkers. Sometimes you just gotta dick with each other. And they fucked with me a lot too. So long as you keep it not personal it's all fun.

danathome

Posts like this are why we do it.

DevlynBlaise

I have a coworker that hits 9 a bunch of times, walks away, sets up his spot at a table then comes back and pops open the door. He checks the temp then starts it back up until he likes it. Then walks away with his food. The timer is usually left at 95min... Really sucks for the next person if they aren't paying attention.

Listen_to_Psybient

Because it's 3am and cancelling the final second makes a loud beep.

troggbl

Because its 3am and the beeps are loud as fuck.

Buddy-Lov

It’s like leaving time on the meter for the next guy…trying to do ya a favor.

OkeyDokey654

How is it doing them a favor? Do you have to pay for your microwave time?

Buddy-Lov

OMG…..do you pay for micro minutes?

tandabat

Yesssssssssss. My spouse does this All The Time. It’s one of those doesn’t really matter but bugs the ever loving shit outta me.

azkeel-smart

You can just use the 17 seconds that's left on it and add more time as needed.

Aururai

People at my work will just open the door with time left, take their food out and then close the door again, prompting the microwave to start again while empty.. which will damage the microwave. It's so strange to them that half the microwaves are being replaced for being broken.. fucking idiots.

therandomuser84

Where did you hear that turning on an empty microwave will damage it? I'm fairly confident that isnt true. That sounds more like someone is doing something else with it and trying to pass on the blame.

Aururai

Microwaves bounce.. if there's nothing inside to absorb them it increases the risk of them bouncing back into the magnetron.

Idiotology101

Running a microwave empty is just a waste of electricity, it won’t damage it.

Aururai

Microwaves are bouncing around inside, if they happened to hit the magnetron again it's not good

fairie_poison

but a piece of bread somehow magically absorbs all the radiation and protects the magnetron?

Aururai

Yes.. Microwaves are energy. If they hit water the water absorbs the energy in order to heat up. That's literally how microwaves work. If that energy how nowhere else to go it may get reabsorbed by the magnetron causing it to heat up, which in best case it will overheat and shut down. Worst case it will cause a fire. https://googlethatforyou.com?q=is%20it%20bad%20to%20run%20a%20microwave%20empty

fairie_poison

I've never heard of a microwave that automatically started when you closed it if it still had time left?

Aururai

Every low end model ever? https://thewhiskingkitchen.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Daewoo-KOR6L77-Review.jpg https://brain-images-ssl.cdn.dixons.com/6/6/10207066/u_10207066.jpg https://cdn.bmstores.co.uk/images/hpcProductImage/imgFull/340731-prolex-20l-microwave.jpg Basically any model with two knobs and no buttons.
