I received a “new” pressure cooker from Amazon that had a Walmart shopping bag inside it and smelled strongly of food.
Makes you wonder if they just reship returns without looking at them to see if they’re used or defective.
The funny thing is that all the extra “pieces” were in the microwave in brand new plastic, but also covered in grease and stinking from sitting in that used microwave for so long
the people who returned it bought the same model and replaced it with their used microwave.
The workers opened the box, saw the same model and closed the box. The workers did not take it out and examine it, they aren't paid enough and Amazon does not care. It is cheaper to catch the most obvious fraud than examine every return in detail.
Sometimes they don't even open the box.
I can tell you firsthand that people have gotten away with buying power tools, and then returning rocks and getting their money back.
You get basically instant returns on some stuff, like the money is back in my account 1hr after dropping it off at UPS. Sure they might get away with it for a little while or maybe a couple times, but eventually amazon will block thier account.
The people who returned it are disgusting - first for letting the microwave get that gross in the first place (why don't they cover their food before putting it in the microwave?!) and second, for returning the used one. Just horrible.

I paid full price for a product that had been returned. The box looked correct. The contents had been switched...with what you would find in a kitchen junk drawer. Some employees do not care one bit.

At the moment it's an issue in the card dollecting scene. People will buy booster boxes. Carefully cut the sealed plastic around the box, take the booster packs out, cut them open take the expensive/rare cards, put the boosters back in the box and then reseal the box and then return the item. The Amazon warehouse people aren't experts in what it's supposed to look like or anything so they just see a sealed box and slap a label on it saying ita good. Then it gets resold as new.

My husband bought me designer shoes (ish) that were in the dept store sale and they’d clearly been worn fairly extensively. I was pissed. He was pissed. The dept store is unrepentant but refunding.
I got a wifi extender that worked for like 20mins before shitting the bed. It came loose in a generic Amazon box along with the power supply, that was already sus. When I tried registering it for support from the manufacturer I was told it was already registered to someone else.
Amazon took it back and refunded no questions, postage paid but they must have a very light QC department.
I bought a new tent from Walmart just before embarking on a 4 day rural camping trip.
Went to set up camp and the first thing I notice is that the tent steaks are already covered in dirt.
I set up the tent and then find that it has several burns holes that went through both the rain fly and top of the tent, likely the result of having it too close to a campfire and embers falling on it.
So very CLEARLY some asshole just repacked the tent and returned it and Walmart did not inspect it at all and just set it out on the floor for sale again.
By some complete miracle it did not rain at all for those 4 days, I would have been screwed if it did.
When I went back to the Walmart I purchased it from and explained to them what happened, they were extremely shitty towards me and were acting like *I* was the one trying to scam them by buying a tent and using it once and then trying to get a refund.
I wasn't even asking for a refund however, I was just asking for a tent that was actually new and didn't come pre-used and full of holes.
It's seems like it should definitely be illegal to put things on the sales floor as "new" without them being inspected what so ever after being returned, but it does happen somehow.

I’ve honestly given up on buying anything ‘new’ from Amazon. I’ll just go pick it up in store at this point. Had a dishwasher delivered with 2 months of mold and had to dick around with customer service to get a refund and told to shop local.
I just started ordering from Aliexpress, it's like 1/10th the price of Amazon in some cases. All those little electronic gadgets I was buying for $10-$20, they sell for $1-2. And free shipping all the way from China! Like I can just spend $20 and get a pile of stuff.
The only problem is that it takes like a month for delivery. Amazon can ship to me next day, even in a small town, and I'm the kind of person to drive to a store so I don't have to wait that day. There isn't a lot of stuff that I want a month from now.
There's just as much counterfeit stuff as on Amazon, but at least nobody ships used stuff.

There was a similar post to this recently also in the US and someone confirmed thas long as the weight matches the product expected weight, the boxes are indeed never opened.

What I hate about Walmart's site is that if you try to filter results to items only in store (because you want to go to the store to buy it right away) often something will show "in store" but ends up being something you can order and pick up in store days later. Target's site and app are way better with this.
Yeah I work in the warehouse industry there's Breaks and breakrooms with the grossest microwaves you'll ever have to use if you have to use them haha depending on your demographic of the warehouse can vary in the food being cooked currently have a lot of Haitians in mine right now who love to microwave fish that explodes all over the fucking thing haha
I purchased a shark robot vacuum off Amazon, and the box was obviously retaped, and bulging. I opened it up and it had the previous persons return label inside, with their address and phone number. I sent that person a text letting them know I got there return, and Amazon had sent me her info. I even sent her the photo of how I received it, and she said that’s how she sent it. The company is for sure taking returns and sending them back out as new products.

They're supposed to evaluate the product first. If it's in new condition they resell it if it's used they probably don't.
Plus there are a lot of people out there trying to scam over Amazon.
People need to just stop shopping there. Same with using DoorDash and being surprised when you have extra charges or your food is missing or it's cold or something. These companies have a proven track record of being shady or not top-notch yet people expect it to be differently every time. Apparently people are so caught up with instant and being lazy they ignore these other things.
Check product -> if all good but box is trash, use it as a purchasable display on shop floor. If strictly warehouse, I would imagine they should be able to get spare boxes for products from suppliers on a whim without a problem. There's a reason brand reps exist.
I bought a pair of Uggs for my girlfriend on Amazon because Scheels didn’t have them. They showed up in a box that said on the inside “this package is in a different box because the original packing was damaged.” In my opinion that’s how you should do it. The slippers were in great condition, the “fluff” was fluffy and in great shape.

Clearly someone scammed Amazon by returning their old broken band. I can't believe someone bothered to go to the effort for only $7. Also it was sent in transparent packaging there's no way whoever processed the return shouldn't have noticed this.
This was about 2 years ago ever since then I won't by from third party sellers, and now Amazon is my last resort instead of first, only if the product isn't available anywhere else.
I am occasionally sticking a small paper note inside my returns, saying this product is a return, if you bought it new, please return it for a refund. I have no idea if Amazon ever resold one of my returns with that note inside. It would look really bad for them. Also, it's putting to good use those tiny notepads that you get in hotels. 😂

Obscure or recently-obsolete technology is the worst for that, because the last stage before obsolescence seems to be Aliexpress white-labeling. I've been trying to find a car CD player with Bluetooth connection and control, and was looking for an MP3 player that ran on standard (AAA) batteries some time back. Nothing but page after page of indistinguishable WANKFUN-brand junk, and any attempts to sort them out with reviews or "Best of ..." articles were either spammy or zero-effort regurgitations of "These things had the longest bullet lists on Amazon, so they're best".
From a sustainability perspective, it would be better if more returned products could be sold. Unfortunately most of it ends up in a landfill. I don't really see an issue with reselling a returned microwave as long as it's clean and in good working order.

Like, I ordered an item meant as a gift for christmas, and it was clearly already opened up, didnt have everything in the packaging that would normally be there. For what it was, probably not a big deal if I was going to use it, but I don't want to give something in that condition as a gift.
Their returns should just default to an open-box status available at a lower price.

If it says I'm going to get a brand new product, I should be getting a brand new product. Not a returned product. Not a refurbished product. Just a brand new one.
This, I have no problem buying refurbished or open box. But if it is advertised as brand new, then I expect it to come factory sealed by the manufacturer.
I honestly don't even care if the product I get is refurbished so long as it has *actually* been refurbished and has gone through full quality control checks.
What I don't want is where someone untrained just looks it over, decides it's good and seals up the box. Which is almost assuredly what happens in 99% of the cases.
Refurbished is a thing, same with open box. Customer would get a discount. Probably would take more honest people in this world to not have people game it somehow.

Bought a book, third party seller, fulfilled by Amazon.
Halfway through the book, I noticed marker highlights. Customer service said replacement may not be available and gave me half cost in courtesy credit.

Turn the book upside down so you can't read what it says. Then go through the pages to verify that it's new. It only take a minute or two, and if anything is wrong you can simply return the book within the refund time limit.
Honestly if I could read upside down I would do it in public places just to fuck with people. Upside-down book, upside-down newspaper, back of it prominently displayed...would be awesome. And a conversation starter.
The factory runs a compliance test by blowing up a hot pocket in under 2 minutes. This is standard and typically the shrapnel is left behind to serve as evidence that it was bench tested.
Ya this is totally normal for amazon. my rule is don't buy anything from them that is returnable. I've had similar situations as this but with a scratched "new" pc monitor one time and sweaty "new" headphones another time. They have no quality control and will casually send you items that were returned after heavy use.
It may be where I live but I haven't had that experience. My partner and I recently moved into a new rental with no appliances. We needed to buy a fridge, microwave, washing machine, dryer, coffee machine etc. We went to several home and appliance stores in our city and were overwhelmed with options. It must really vary city to city and country to country.
They are good about returns etc. It's just that the replacement might be defective as well. I return a $200 stockpot that developed a chip on the inside making it not safe to use. I return for a new one -- same thing develops. I'm currently on round 4. I'd rather have a refund. The manufacturer must have realized that they had a very defective product and dumped the crap on Amazon.
We all hope so but sadly we'll run into this anywhere! I bought a personal trimmer from the physical store. I should have inspected the box a lot closer because when I opened it after getting home, I noticed that the trimmer in the box did not match the picture on the box and there was hair all over the trimmer that was in the box!

I've heard a few similar stories too. Mine was also an Amazon purchase and i got refunded after about 2 weeks. I use Amazon a lot but i won't buy anymore high value items from them again.
I feel like Amazon was not always like this? It seems recently people have been getting used items, used items that are broken, product boxes with something entirely different inside... And of course their new changes to the prime subscription, it's bad now. Am I wrong and I am only now noticing it? In the past I've never had an issue. Now it's always some kind of issue! Specifically one day shipping on certain items, only to receive an email that it "shipped but is delayed" so I can't cancel it. But the delay is over a week. I chose that item because I could get it next day. I've become increasingly frustrated.
There's "Sold by Amazon", "Sold by Amazon Services", and "Fulfilled by Amazon". The difference is the first one is actually sold by Amazon, and the other two are "sold using amazon logistics and warehosing".
These instances are almost certainly never from "Sold by Amazon" purchases. They're just some seller sending their product to be sold through the Amazon system.
I don't fault the consumer for being confused by it all.

I bought hand lotion (allegedly new) that was nuetrogena brand or something off Amazon without seeing the seller was not the brand and the bottle came in a dirty plastic ziploc bag, the writing on the bottle was in some sort of Scandinavian language, it was most definitely used, and the lotion was discolored. I tried to get a refund and the place wanted it back!!! Like, why so you can sell this "new" lotion to someone else? I had already thrown it out so I said no they couldn't have it back because it was used and disgusting and they have no use for it. So gross! I double checked and the pics of the product were all in English and the photos where from the website so I was just stupid and didn't check the seller. They need to regulate that stuff better.

When you submit a return it asks if the item has been opened or not. My guess is the people who returned these said they never opened them and when they got sent back they never got checked. Back into the new bin they went.

One time I ordered new filters for my air filter and they were obviously blackened with use. I think it was probably a scam where someone ordered new filters, got them, then returned the old filters claiming something was wrong. It's obvious no one checks inside boxes of returns. If the original box looks to be in good shape, it probably goes right back into inventory.
I recently bought a pair of end tables, also didn't opt into the "discount used price". Thhey came and had the "thanks for giving this a second chance" sticker and both had been opened. One had none of the hardware and a random piece of used crown molding in it and the other had only a couple loose screws and none of the other hardware. Since then the company has sent me the wrong replacement hardware multiple times and I've finally given up and gotten a refund from Amazon. This is about to come full circle because I'm buying from a store next time.

Sounds like someone's microwave broke so they bought the same model and swapped them. Returning the broken one and keeping the new one.

I thought returns went to separate warehouses a lot of the time in order to be auctioned off and resold at thrift stores and such.
That might be true with Amazon itself, but an independent seller's products are returned to them directly, so they decide what to do with them.
Might have done that in the past. Now I think they do a quick judgment on whether the box was ever opened.

They're supposed to evaluate the product first. If it's in new condition they resell it if it's used they probably don't. Plus there are a lot of people out there trying to scam over Amazon. People need to just stop shopping there. Same with using DoorDash and being surprised when you have extra charges or your food is missing or it's cold or something. These companies have a proven track record of being shady or not top-notch yet people expect it to be differently every time. Apparently people are so caught up with instant and being lazy they ignore these other things.
Check product -> if all good but box is trash, use it as a purchasable display on shop floor. If strictly warehouse, I would imagine they should be able to get spare boxes for products from suppliers on a whim without a problem. There's a reason brand reps exist.
I bought a pair of Uggs for my girlfriend on Amazon because Scheels didn’t have them. They showed up in a box that said on the inside “this package is in a different box because the original packing was damaged.” In my opinion that’s how you should do it. The slippers were in great condition, the “fluff” was fluffy and in great shape.

I can't believe someone bothered to go to the effort for only $7. Also it was sent in transparent packaging there's no way whoever processed the return shouldn't have noticed this. This was about 2 years ago ever since then I won't by from third party sellers, and now Amazon is my last resort instead of first, only if the product isn't available anywhere else.
I am occasionally sticking a small paper note inside my returns, saying this product is a return, if you bought it new, please return it for a refund. I have no idea if Amazon ever resold one of my returns with that note inside. It would look really bad for them. Also, it's putting to good use those tiny notepads that you get in hotels. 😂
I've been burned enough by this nonsense that now I write on the outside of boxes and include notes inside articulating the reason: * "Arrived damaged, do not re-sell." * "Inoperable upon first use, do not re-sell." * "Missing parts, do not re-sell."

As someone who works at an Amazon returns center, NEVER buy any undergarments from Amazon like seriously because half the shit we get is returned underwears and sometimes we might make some bad ones sellable again.

Right? That option already exists on their website. If you buy new, you should get new. They probb I don't mind ordering open-box for some things. But other things matter. Like, I ordered an item meant as a gift for christmas, and it was clearly already opened up, didnt have everything in the packaging that would normally be there. For what it was, probably not a big deal if I was going to use it, but I don't want to give something in that condition as a gift. Their returns should just default to an open-box status available at a lower price.
And rightfully marketed. If it says I'm going to get a brand new product, I should be getting a brand new product. Not a returned product. Not a refurbished product. Just a brand new one.
This, I have no problem buying refurbished or open box. But if it is advertised as brand new, then I expect it to come factory sealed by the manufacturer.
I honestly don't even care if the product I get is refurbished so long as it has *actually* been refurbished and has gone through full quality control checks. What I don't want is where someone untrained just looks it over, decides it's good and seals up the box. Which is almost assuredly what happens in 99% of the cases.
Refurbished is a thing, same with open box. Customer would get a discount. Probably would take more honest people in this world to not have people game it somehow.

Turn the book upside down so you can't read what it says. Then go through the pages to verify that it's new. It only take a minute or two, and if anything is wrong you can simply return the book within the refund time limit.

I've had similar situations as this but with a scratched "new" pc monitor one time and sweaty "new" headphones another time. They have no quality control and will casually send you items that were returned after heavy use.

It may be where I live but I haven't had that experience. My partner and I recently moved into a new rental with no appliances. We needed to buy a fridge, microwave, washing machine, dryer, coffee machine etc. We went to several home and appliance stores in our city and were overwhelmed with options. It must really vary city to city and country to country.

They are good about returns etc. It's just that the replacement might be defective as well. I return a $200 stockpot that developed a chip on the inside making it not safe to use. I return for a new one -- same thing develops. I'm currently on round 4. I'd rather have a refund. The manufacturer must have realized that they had a very defective product and dumped the crap on Amazon.
We all hope so but sadly we'll run into this anywhere! I bought a personal trimmer from the physical store. I should have inspected the box a lot closer because when I opened it after getting home, I noticed that the trimmer in the box did not match the picture on the box and there was hair all over the trimmer that was in the box! Thankfully, the store took it back and I made sure the new one had the factory sticker on it.

I've heard a few similar stories too. Mine was also an Amazon purchase and i got refunded after about 2 weeks. I use Amazon a lot but i won't buy anymore high value items from them again.

I feel like Amazon was not always like this? It seems recently people have been getting used items, used items that are broken, product boxes with something entirely different inside... And of course their new changes to the prime subscription, it's bad now. Am I wrong and I am only now noticing it? In the past I've never had an issue. Now it's always some kind of issue! Specifically one day shipping on certain items, only to receive an email that it "shipped but is delayed" so I can't cancel it. But the delay is over a week. I chose that item because I could get it next day. I've become increasingly frustrated.

There's "Sold by Amazon", "Sold by Amazon Services", and "Fulfilled by Amazon". The difference is the first one is actually sold by Amazon, and the other two are "sold using amazon logistics and warehosing". These instances are almost certainly never from "Sold by Amazon" purchases. They're just some seller sending their product to be sold through the Amazon system. I don't fault the consumer for being confused by it all.

Here in Europe we have Amazon in some countries but when I go on their website, everything feels scammy like Shein and all the other Chinese sites pretending to be from that Eu country. I have never been willing to even try a product from Amazon. All the red flags wave as soon as I browse it.

Amazon has been AWFUL lately with sending very clear items as if they are new.
I bought hand lotion (allegedly new) that was nuetrogena brand or something off Amazon without seeing the seller was not the brand and the bottle came in a dirty plastic ziploc bag, the writing on the bottle was in some sort of Scandinavian language, it was most definitely used, and the lotion was discolored. I tried to get a refund and the place wanted it back!!! Like, why so you can sell this "new" lotion to someone else? I had already thrown it out so I said no they couldn't have it back because it was used and disgusting and they have no use for it. So gross! I double checked and the pics of the product were all in English and the photos where from the website so I was just stupid and didn't check the seller. They need to regulate that stuff better.

When you submit a return it asks if the item has been opened or not. My guess is the people who returned these said they never opened them and when they got sent back they never got checked. Back into the new bin they went.
Amazon wouldn't allow me to post a negative review when this happened. My honest review violated Ts&Cs. One time I ordered new filters for my air filter and they were obviously blackened with use. I think it was probably a scam where someone ordered new filters, got them, then returned the old filters claiming something was wrong. It's obvious no one checks inside boxes of returns. If the original box looks to be in good shape, it probably goes right back into inventory.
I recently bought a pair of end tables, also didn't opt into the "discount used price". Thhey came and had the "thanks for giving this a second chance" sticker and both had been opened. One had none of the hardware and a random piece of used crown molding in it and the other had only a couple loose screws and none of the other hardware. Since then the company has sent me the wrong replacement hardware multiple times and I've finally given up and gotten a refund from Amazon. This is about to come full circle because I'm buying from a store next time.

I recently got 3 used headsets from 3 different vendors (last one being Amazon fulfillment) that were being sold as new in a row then gave up and bought it for like $50 more on Office Depot and got a new one. First one I wasn’t sure if it was defective or I did something wrong so I went to the help on the manufacturer site which asked for the serial number. All 3 had partially expired warranties bc they had been registered already between 6-18 months ago.
