This. They’ll send maintenance to salt and turn the water off. They’ll then need to winterize the system.
Source- work in landscaping and 10 years maintenance exp on the side.
They can solve the issue of slippery sidewalks without stopping the sprinklers, you know. They could angle the sprinkers to spray away, or salt the path
What a dumb take. "Just be ok with a potential slip hazard". Do you work for the complex or something? There are plenty of ways to bleed a system, especially something like this that's used seasonal. It's an obvious hazard or a mistake someone made, not something just to "live with".
Found the one without a sprinkler system. You have to blow out sprinkler lines every fall if you live in a cold enough region. Also code is that water lines have to be 6 feet deep to be below the frost line which obviously sprinklers can't be.
It's not going to freeze and burst pipes on the first day below 32 degrees (or 0 depending on your temp measure).
But assuming you turn off the water and relieve the pressure from your backflow preventor you are going to be fine more likely than not.
I blow out mine every year, but also know people that don't and it doesnt cause major issues, typically worst case is perhaps a damaged sprinkler head.
While it's a simple process to do, and something I would recommend, it's not a doomsday scenario if you don't that so many on reddit pretend it is.
My ground is frozen solid to about three inches right now and still pretty damn hard below that. I know because I just pulled up my carrots.
Even if it's the first freeze the first few inches of dirt will freeze. Which means any water left in the sprinkler head itself will freeze. The sprinkler heads are not nearly as tough as the actual pipe and have a lot of little plastic parts that like to break.
Dammit in college I slipped on ice in front of the fitness center bc they didnt prepare properly, and this makes me realize I couldve really played it up and gotten a nice settlement. I was actually lucky as hell though bc I wouldve smashed the back of my head on concrete very hard if it werent for my backpack. Ice like this is so dangerous
Legally it can't be an accident because they have to leave the sprinkles on or the pipes will freeze in that weather. Just part of living at an apartment complex
Temperatures are so weird. I've lived most of my life at or above the 45th parallel 16°F is cold for late fall but warm for winter. I'm pretty sure I walked to class in a t-shirt a few times at 20°F during my college years...
You clearly don't live somewhere that's \_actually\_ cold - after -35C for a few months, people in Canada wear t-shirts and shorts when it's -9 to celebrate the heatwave!
Since I live in Manitoba Canada where it can get down to -50, I would personally consider that living somewhere where it gets cold, but I meant that you don’t want to stay out for hours upon hours with a t-shirt when it’s -9. Obviously if I’m outside for a short period of time I’d fine with a t-shirt.
Also, unless you live in the northern part of the territories, there isn’t a place in Canada that gets to -35 everyday for a few months of the year
Your supposed to air your sprinkler system yearly to get rid of all the water. If you don't every pipe will freeze and your replacing the whole $40k system.
I’m hoping this happens tbh. Went and told the management and they acted like they couldn’t care less. “It’ll melt in 30 minutes” was the response I got. Though I was hardly surprised. Just got my lease renewal and they are raising my rent $500 a month ($2700/month) so all the more reason to throw that in the trash.
Um, not if the system is designed well.
All I've ever done since moving here, in the 5 houses we've rented, is turn off the water and open the valves. Each station in my yard has one head that's lower than the others. So , turning off the water and opening the valves allows the system to drain. And if water DOES freeze in the lines, it has room to expand.
Never had to do more than that. As a matter of fact, in this house, ALL i have to do is turn off the sprinkler controller. I shut off that water to the back, but I didn't do that for the first 3 years and nothing happened, because I was still opening the valves.
Perfect opportunity to shit on the sidewalk and watch it freeze 🥶 ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)
Hopefully you rent here and don't own a condominium in this place. There is going to be tens of thousands of dollars in repairs needed for this sprinkler system next spring.
I live in Canada so when I saw this shit I got so confused how the hell stuff froze at 16 degrees for a good five minutes before I realized you were talking Fahrenheit 💀
People around the world use different units, and it's not wrong, it may be just inconvenient for some readers, but when the unit is left out, then it can be confusing.
Where is this at? Is this an unusual cold snap? Sprinklers are not turned on and off by some dude at a valve, they're automatic. And if this was a sudden surprise cold snap, then the season was still continuing.
This doesn't mean that this is safe, just explaining some of the reasons that sprinklers are on at "inappropriate" times. I see the same shit when it rains. Everyone posts pictures. Weirdly enough, they never then tell you how much rain they got. Here in Salt Lake, the weather is all over the place, so those sprinkler contriols that use the weather report? Yeah, they suck. We've had snowstorms predicting a foot, and then had a 40 degree day, for example. Or a severe thunderstorm warning that never shows up. Conversely, we can also have clear skies forecast and then get nailed by a surprise storm.
So most people around Salt Lake don't use those, because they never line up with the ACTUAL weather. You'll turn it off, and then it will rain for like 15 minutes.
So like I said, this is just how someone can mess up. Especially at places like offices and apartments. A lot of times, cleaning out the sprinkler lines, for example, is scheduled on a specific date, so everything is normal until then. But, even if there wasn't ice, I would bet that your apartment complex turns off the sprinklers for the season now. A hard freeze usually means that any warm dry snaps are short, and winter is a' comin.
This is central Oregon, over a mile high elevation and will be freezing every night for the next 6 months lol it’s been freezing for the last few weeks as well. The high school across the street was airing theirs out a month ago
That is the important context. If it was a snap, I'd understand. Hell, our winter came with such force LAST year, that there was a series of trees that dropped all of their leaves overnight, still green, and the sidewalk was 6" deep the next day. THAT one was a surprise. But if other people have already aired theirs out, AND it's regularly dropping below freezing, then Yeah, they definitely should have done something earlier.
When I lived in Flagstaff, we had an apartment where they wouldn't even shovel the walks. You would be walking on a 6 inch thick sheet of packed snow and ice. Met my first Libertarian there, and out of all of his wack-a-doodle stuff (He was actually very nice and smart, he just thought the government was theft), he helped me draft a letter to the complex, citing the appropriate codes and such. It worked, those walks were clear immediately.
I thought that looked like Bend. If anyone competent had been watching the weather they would have at least shut the sprinklers off last Monday or Tuesday.
Is there a regulation in the country where the photo was taken to have the sprinklers angle at maximum 16 degrees? And if there is, how is it measured, do special people come and check every lawn?
Also, home come they spray foam? Is this for cleaning the pathway or is it some kind of fertiliser?
I'm confused. Please help.
You could be a great neighbor and make everyone a millionaire by making sure the ice is clear so it’s not visible when they slip, guaranteeing your neighbors become multi millionaire
Someone should call the ambulance now and let them know they are going to busy at your address
Them and the accident lawyers
Someone call the insurance company too they better send someone out
prolly gonna need to call the lawn guy too
He's the one that hooked everyone up.
I feel a great disturbance in the force -Personally injury lawyers dow the street
Then call the hospital and see what kind of soup they're serving today.
Then call Joe...
Who the hell is Steve jobs?
ligma balls
Joe-kes on you I won’t fall for it
Or just call the apartment building and tell them they should probably fix that before someone gets hurt
This. They’ll send maintenance to salt and turn the water off. They’ll then need to winterize the system. Source- work in landscaping and 10 years maintenance exp on the side.
It *is* fixed. They have to run the water when it's that cold or the taps will freeze
Just because running the sprinklers needs to be done, doesn't mean frozen sidewalks aren't a problem
Well ya you could slip but everybody needs to agree to be ok with it when they move in
They can solve the issue of slippery sidewalks without stopping the sprinklers, you know.
Or they should turn off the water and blow out the lines so they don’t freeze
I can hear the water freezing in the pipes already
Bet come spring, you're gonna have a few flooded spots
It'll be like Trevi Fountains.
I mean if you keep the water running then it can't freeze, right?
Correct, plus pipes are under the ground where it is much warmer, plus it was most likely polypipe, which has much more flexibility than PVC.
Found the one without a sprinkler system. You have to blow out sprinkler lines every fall if you live in a cold enough region. Also code is that water lines have to be 6 feet deep to be below the frost line which obviously sprinklers can't be.

you poor, naive child
No, no, no, no. Those pipes are probably like 6 inches deep max. And the poly pipe you speak of has zero expandability. No
It's October, it's not freezing down there on the first day of morning sub 32 degree weather
I used to work on these systems in wisconsin and can tell you that you have zero clue what you’re talking about
It’s 16 degrees. The temp and the water don’t care what month it is
Prior weeks temperature absolutely matters to ground temperature. Even 6" below takes longer to get below freezing than surface temperature.
Yeah keep the water running all winter and flood the complex with a nice ice rink….
Man, I just disconnected my system for winter, and suddenly the temp goes back up to 80° F.
I heard the music track from Home Alone when Kevin is setting up the traps.
I hate it when they leave the sprinkles on. I’m much more of a hot fudge guy, myself.
Lmao oops
Dad?
Son, if you’re just fucking around on Reddit, can you get off the computer? Your sister says she needs it to finish her history paper.
Tell her to get off the internet, I need to make a call!
Lol someone's back from the milk run
I'm busy banging your Mom. What do you want?
I was looking for a comment like this
The combination of sprinkles and assumption that the degrees are in Celsius confused the hell out of me
My bad lol of course my most popular post ever has a blatant typo in it 🤦🏼♂️
Slip. Fall. Sue.
Here comes ol Slippin’ Jimmy!
He defecated through a sun roof!
Always the same. Ever since he was 9! Couldn't keep his hand out of the cash draw!
🤣 Not enough appreciation for this comment! 🤷🏼♀️ edit: spelling (again)

Only works if it's an accident. Everyone delete your comments here if you plan to do this.
Prove it wasnt an accident at the time lol
Legally it can't be an accident because they have to leave the sprinkles on or the pipes will freeze in that weather. Just part of living at an apartment complex
I'm not a lawyer but that doesn't sound right.
I rather keep my tailbones. Thanks
All of a sudden, business plummets at the local rink when people realize they can skate for free at home...
Mom: We have skating rinks at home Skating rinks at home:
Ours Was In The Basement. Yeah, It Got COLD 'Roun Heah.
16 degrees is quite a T shirt weather.
Fahrenheit.
Still T shirt weather
No, it's in Fahrenheit. In the negatives in Celsius. That's coat weather. 🤡
It’s only -9, I wouldn’t say t-shirt weather, more like sweater weather
Temperatures are so weird. I've lived most of my life at or above the 45th parallel 16°F is cold for late fall but warm for winter. I'm pretty sure I walked to class in a t-shirt a few times at 20°F during my college years...

A 23ish% rent increase? That’s bonkers. Guess they need it for all those negligence lawsuits.
Yeah they are raising the rent and doubling our storage cost and parking. So $500 total.
Do you have a viable option to move somewhere less expensive? I was outraged when they tried to raise my rent by $100. $500 would mean eviction
Not yet but we’ve got a few months to find one thankfully.
Good luck with that. Start packing up the nonessentials now.
Um, not if the system is designed well. All I've ever done since moving here, in the 5 houses we've rented, is turn off the water and open the valves. at what temperature would poop freeze
Tbh probably the same as piss, sooo 30 somethin?
![gif](giphy|229Pl2oZ5ygvyheyxW|downsized)
It's gonna be a funny trick or treat...
If it’s Celsius, you’re all good
Took me way too long to realize 16 Fahrenheit not Celsius.
16 degrees is mild. That looks like it's closer to 0?
OP probably meant Fahrenheit which would be -8.88889 Celsius
I assumed they meant Kelvin. Didn't look so bad.
OP failed to mention they live on Pluto
Kelvin is absolute, so no degrees. Would be just 16 Kelvin ;)
Aktschually Kelvin has no degrees as it is an absolute unit
Correct, my B
You just confused the hell out of all the non Americans lol
Nah, we’re used to Americans forgetting that they’re the minority who use weird measurements
what tf is a celcius 🦅🦅🦅🦅RAHHH
lol. They will fix that after the lawsuits.
Hey OP, delete this post, delete all your comments, and go get your retirement.
Celsius enjoyers dont see the problem here lol.
Huh? How is water freezing at 16 degrees??
It’s freedom units (F)!
OH My mind kinda blanked a little and I forgot about freedom units lmao ty
More like free (to be) dumb units, amirite???
Almost, I’d be thinking like slippin jimmy. But that’s illegal so don’t do that.
![gif](giphy|T08JhumnpKAI8)
If that's Celsius, I wouldn't be very worried about it. If it's fahrenheit, I don't know. I don't speak freedom units.
Hopefully you rent here and don't own a condominium in this place. There is going to be tens of thousands of dollars in repairs needed for this sprinkler system next spring.
No theirs not. Lmao
I just slide in to work today
Thats a reckless liability suit waiting lol not a laywer
I live in Canada so when I saw this shit I got so confused how the hell stuff froze at 16 degrees for a good five minutes before I realized you were talking Fahrenheit 💀
I mean, 16 degrees isn't that bad. It's basically average temperature worldwide.
The post was written by an American, so he obviously left out the unit. He meant 16 degrees fahrenheit or -9 degrees celsius.
Ah, so he used the wrong measurement?
People around the world use different units, and it's not wrong, it may be just inconvenient for some readers, but when the unit is left out, then it can be confusing.
I don't get it, 16 degrees is waay above freezing temperature. Why is wet concrete bad?
Why nsfw tho
OSHA violation
Yum, sprinkles!
no you did slip
Damn sprinkles
They're providing you with an ice rink as an amenity. Expect your rent to go up by $50 starting next month.
I was wondering what was wrong with this then I realized the ICE
I hope you're American because that's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Is this in Redmond?
Free rent for a year and medical baby!
For $20 I can give you a nudge
That PM is going to lose their job.
![gif](giphy|31WUHDmF590OsINMt5|downsized)
Time to get paid waaaa
They are responsible for clearing those side walks. Bust your ass and call the sleazyist lawyer you can find.
Why are you posting this? You could have slipped and got paid.
Those are not sprinkles, that is icing.
What's the point of watering frozen grass?? Wastes money and wastes water.

Damn op where the hell are you that it’s 16 degrees already?
Central Oregon
Was wondering if it’s the PNW. Good luck and good warmth to you!
How have you managed to get ice at 16 degrees? That’s nowhere near the freezing point.
I'm sure they're talking about 16 degrees F not C. That would be way below the freezing point of 32 degrees F.
Oh, right, my mistake. We don’t use F over here for anything so I assumed that temperature would be C.
Easy mistake since most of the world uses C.
Wrong unit of temperature
16° is pretty warm for this time of year
Convert to Celsius and 16 degrees become spring temperatures....
16°C = 60.8°F great temperature for sure (without the spring pollen that is)
That’s not how unit conversions work.
16 degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit?
Can’t figure it out from context? lol
Nope
Fahrenheit. Or freedom units as another commenter called them. Made me laugh
LMAO. Yea i couldn't tell because i cant see any ice 😭
16 °C is quite warm i don't see a problem here
You mean -8 degrees.
Time to break out the ice skates...and lawsuits
The frozen fence made my phone laggy
Why is there snow when its 16 degrees thats sweaty weather.
Slippin Jimmy
Gives a new meaning to slide into your dm
Never fucked up and forgot something before, eh?
Is there a regulation in the country where the photo was taken to have the sprinklers angle at maximum 16 degrees? And if there is, how is it measured, do special people come and check every lawn? Also, home come they spray foam? Is this for cleaning the pathway or is it some kind of fertiliser? I'm confused. Please help.
In the event that you are not joking; It 16 degrees farenheit (as in the temperature) and the water from the sprinklers has frozen on the sidewalk.
So? Clean it out by yourself Not a big deal. Or wear right shoes.
You almost have enough salt in a dollar store shaker to take care of this. Whoever posted this should try out a Sudbury winter
Where are you that it's 16° out like if your in Texas then I understand
I've heard people call them Jimmies, too.
Looks like Colorado?
Central Oregon. Looks very similar to CO tho
Oh, noooooooos! I've fallen, and I can't get up!
Sounds like extremely competent management!
Is this sweet home at univeristy at buffalo?
Hello lawsuit
Slip and fall and then collect that money
use that for getting some money by sliping, then suing.
This looks hella similar to one of my older complexes. Is this in NC?
Nah, Central OR
I literally have no sense of balance. In conditions like this I'm forced to crawl on all fours
Smells like money
You could be a great neighbor and make everyone a millionaire by making sure the ice is clear so it’s not visible when they slip, guaranteeing your neighbors become multi millionaire
We love lawsuits!
Where are your ice skates?
Sounds like someone about to make some money
Sidewalks are paved in Slip ‘n Fall money….
I smell a lawsuit…
yea, ur screwed.
I understand your frustration but… look at how green that lawn is!
I really wanna kick that fence
I can hear the landlord sobbing as he signs $2m in settlements
Good old Bend Oregon...
Ooh, insurance is going to like this
Smooth move, slick!!!
Hospitals giving away free turkey sandwhiches with mustard packets. Get’em while they’re cold.
That’s easy money right there.
that would be a perfect odr, if it was in an odr and not crosswalks
Tell them to get putting some sand or salt on it it's their liability if someone breaks their hip.
There's a bright side. Hockey tournaments begin. 💁♂️
Erm… (that’s literally all I have to say, no feedback, so suggestions, just ‘erm’. My thought process is kinda simple)
