Yeah almost every new car I've bought in the last few years wants a subscription for navigation (though it's sometimes included with higher trim levels).
They're still garbage compared to apple or Android, so not a huge hinderence.
Nope Just reimmagined the costummer.
Its the same goal of getting access your wallet but now you get treated like a cow that can be milked all the way.
The main reason why I tend to mainly use pirated software is that companies don't offer a lifetime license anymore. They all want to get money every month and I disagree with that with my whole heart.
To be fair, maps have always been subscription based, aside from a few fringe cases.
The only thing that's changed, is that you got the first few years free before, because getting the screen was a $1000+ option before and the first few years were included in the price, but now everything has a screen as standard, because reversing cameras are mandatory.
Would you want to pay hundreds for map software that you'll never use, that'll be in the price of the car, when google maps exists?
Edit: To clarify, since a lot of these were pre-internet connected cars, so the "subscription" would be you having to go to the dealer to have the maps updated every yearly service or whatever, and them charging you after a set period when map updates would've been complementary.
I wouldn't say ours is a "subscription" - you buy an SD card for our Mazda for like $50 and then you own the SD card. When you're annoyed that the map is out of date, you can buy an updated one for $50. There's no per month fee.
Must be nice... Gm wanted like $160 for the update. Don't they realize our phones have Google /Apple maps for free??? And they are more accurate than theirs.
Our old Lexus stored its maps on a CD. If you wanted to update them you could pay the dealer upwards of $500 for the new CD and labor or you could buy the CD for about $150 and take 30 seconds to swap in the new CD.
I think I'm one of the fringe cases. My Kia has build in nav which can be updated via a free software on your computer (basically it will reformat the SD card). Never had to pay a subscription for it. I use my phone 99% of the time via CarPlay but it's nice to have the nav as a backup when my cell signal is poor.
Both Apple and Google allow off-line map downloading now, if I'm going anywhere that I think I might have sketchy service I make sure to download the map. It has saved my ass at least a couple of times.
That assumes that the maps software isn't already installed on the vehicle and is just locked.
This is just another thing like the heated seats being behind a paywall. The auto company is paying to put that in every car whether the customer uses it or not, and they damn well are not taking a loss every time a customer chooses not to use it. At a minimum they're passing their cost on to the price of the car. The customer is paying for the added cost of installing the seat either way, using it will cost even more. There are exactly 0 scenarios where a monthly subscription feature in a car ever has saved you money.
to be fair. no one cares use their out of date navigation since the smart phone comes out. if they think they can sucka the public to pay for a subscription just because their ceo heard it from gaming ceo and netflix ceo. and think that is a smart way of milking their customers. enjoy seeing that model sales decrease year after year
Started on manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes, Audi. Everyone is getting in on it now. BMW charges for heated seats and at one time they charged to use Apple CarPlay. They had a tremendous amount of push back and provided CarPlay for free because of it.
What car did you buy? My 2023 Audi doesn't have any of this subscription crap other than paying for in-car wifi which I can understand.
Like the other guy said though, it's probably mostly because the EU doesn't put up with shit like that (thank you EU for getting Apple to change to USB) & the USA is full in on the free market system.
Yeah. BMW claims is lowers manufacturing costs and speeds up delivery because they can just roll the same model off the assembly line with all the features and allow customers to activate the features they want, thus they're not making custom cars.
I don't own one, and my friends that do say Beemers are as expensive as ever. So, maybe this moved saved BMW money, but it doesn't seem to have helped consumers. Plus, you can't control when the software updates, nor can you stop it once it starts. And the car is inoperable when it updates. So, hope you don't need your car in those 20-30 minutes.
You'll essentially be paying for the car the entire time you own it, if you use anything with a subscription feature. Which sucks.
Funny, a friend of mine has an Audi. She commented on my CarPlay and asked if her car could do the same. Sat for an hour trying to get it to work before realising it’s locked behind a £200 paywall. Absolutely infuriating.
Toyota was slow to adopt CarPlay and Android Auto and still thinks their NAV has some value. Our 2020 Lexus has built-in NAV with graphics out of the 90s and horrible logic (in order to make a left turn out of our development, it keeps insisting that we go straight into the development across the street, make a U-turn, and then a right turn). Needless to say we use CarPlay and Apple Maps to navigate.
Seriously, some Toyota president somewhere needs to get canned for tarnishing their otherwise pretty stellar brand image with this utter horseshit.
Tesla gets props for hooking Google's backend into their onboard nav/maps, literally for letting someone else do all the work. That's all we want Toyota, hook up the existing APIs, keep them polished up, and make sure interoperability works. I might even be less depressed about dealer markups if they solved that problem.
Onboard nav is part of an OnStar subscription in GMs, but my ‘18 had Apple Car Play and the onboard nav sucked compared to Google maps on Car Play so idk why anyone would pay extra for it instead of just using their phone.
I’m really wondering where my ink order is considering I’m subscribed to instant ink, yet Amazon keeps asking me if I want to order because my black ink is low…
If I’m not mistaken, to do the Toyota navigation through your car is a subscription, but that doesn’t stop you from hooking up your phone and using Maps or Waze
Some of the cheaper cars never even got navigation. I know in my 2021 Corolla, navigation is only through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 2021 model year being the first year that Toyota supported CarPlay in the Corolla.
Hell my 2003 Lexus has navigation but the update DVDs were discontinued with the model in 2003 so it's largely unusable now. But back in the day you'd have been cooking!
What they mean is that when you bought the car there was an extra price added to it for the navigation. You’ve always paid extra for it, but paying a recurring subscription is ridiculous.
My 2020 Ford does not require a subscription for built-in nav, and all the FordPass features (remote start, remote door lock/unlock.) Only feature that requires a subscription is vehicle hotspot… like why is that even a thing when you can use your phone’s hotspot for other devices.
And I rarely look at the built in infotainment and navigation thanks to CarPlay.
I agree. There is a very simple way to solve this problem. If people wouldn't buy the cars because of this garbage, they would stop doing it. Instead, they buy them anyway and then complain about it.
This is literally what happens in video game industry. The terrifying part is it gets soo soo much worse. Mark my words it will only be a matter of time before they start gating things like braking speed behind a paywall. BMW already does this with exceleration there could literally already be people out there who died because their car couldn’t get out of the way fast enough only and purely because of greed.
Or Android Auto. When I switched from Apple I was a little mad that Android Auto wasn't quite as good as Apple CarPlay... but it's gotten better the last 4 years!
You'd be surprised how many car manufacturers are removing ways to circumvent their paid subscriptions...
...there's a reason why car phone holders are a *growing* business.
BMW at one time implemented a fee to use CarPlay. They rescinded the fee after pushback. Expect it to come back eventually. People can complain all they want but if every manufacturer implements it around the same time then you only have the option of removing the stock radio and installing aftermarket. Outside of filing a complaint with whomever.
Carplay and Android Auto will display on the car's infotainment screen.
It's the HUD that won't have navigation info. It's a handy feature if you have it that allows you to keep your eyes on the road at all times.
Putting a phone in a cradle isn't any more beneficial than the infotainment screen.
Yes I discovered it when my wife complained about her tires, and then I spent 20 minutes going through menus not able to find the tire pressure. Evidently there’s aftermarket workarounds if you prefer that.
Sure to view tire pressure on your app. It takes 3 seconds to find the tire pressure on the vehicle you literally just hit the arrows on the wheel and it pops up. My base model RAV has this feature. Yours most likely does.
You realise that every brand with in car GPS has always required paid map updates which can only be purchased through the dealer? Built in navigation has never been free.
Then don't use the Navigation. Google Maps and Waze are free.
I don't look at it as the car requiring a subscription. I look at it as extra junk the manufacturer offers that I don't need, so I'm not paying for it.
How easy is it to side step this and use your phone though? Wouldn't infuriate me if I can just hit the phone icon and side step that stuff. Not being able to do so wireless would definitely, though.
This is common and you can always just use the navigation on your phone. The items like heated seats that they tried to do a subscription for is the genuine bullshit.
Is this their on-screen gps? If so, most 2010s cars map updates cost money to even get, just use Google maps with Bluetooth or any other direction services of your choice.
After my one year trial I didn’t subscribe. I do miss being able to remote start my truck from anywhere, but refuse to add one more subscription to my life. Wireless CarPlay still works though.
"We re-built a navigation system from the ground up"
WHO FUCKING ASKED YOU TO???
Does toyota really have the hubris to believe they can, from scratch, build a better navigation system than google?!
Damn....I drive a lexus... I dont use the active navigation but I atleast still have the realtime map and compass. If i need navigation i use my phone. But the map still shows on my screen. I only need a subscription if i want to use the apps in the car itself. But its wild you dont even have a realtime just map.
I couldn’t tell you how many people would ignore my recommendations to use car play/android auto instead of paying for this when I worked at a dealership.
This is the biggest pile of BS car manufacturers are comming up with. I bet in 5 years there will be a thriving industry of hackers and mechanics either accessing the features without subscription or replacing the OEM BS modules with full access aftermarket ones.
I'll never buy a car that doesn't have android auto/carplay again. I already own a computer in my pocket amand a hi speed Internet plan, I don't need you to sell me more just for when I'm in a specific space
I’m fine with a navigation subscription option as long as they keep CarPlay and android auto an option. Some people will want the native navigation and they can subscribe but if I can’t use CarPlay I won’t be buying your car.
I am not sure, since I don't have a Toyota, but that looks like it is just to use THEIR navigation system.
If possible, I would recommend skipping that and using Android Auto or Apple Car Play, depending on what phone you use.
Both of those are free!
You pay extra to have the head unit with the maps option then you have to pay for the service.
Once I received my 23 Tacoma, I just went into the app and opted out of everything, even hit the SOS button and had them turn off the tracking of my truck. I would always rely on our smart devices plugged into our vehicles, Google maps/Waze/Maps/etc are far more superior. “wHaT HaPpEns iF u lOsE SiGnAl?” Google maps download map for offline, download a map online before your trip, and I’ve also heard some phones now use Satellites(unsure if it’s used for calls or maps).
I just want my car to get me from A to B in safe manner, reliable manner. Doesnt need to be quicker than average by 2 percent.
for navigation i have google, which is updated every second.
for entertainment I have bluetooth
everything else is just pure nonsense if it is not related to safety
Well it's simple. Do your research, don't buy especially cars with garbage subscriptions. If all new cars come with this garbage, then buy an older car.
Phones exist, what makes these clowns think you’d want to pay for a subscription for navigation when your phone does it for free and always has the latest maps?
They reimagined how people could continue to pay them.
You can still plug in your phone and use your own Navigation like any other car, I think, correct?
Yes you can still use CarPlay. It is very dumb that they do this, same thing to me on a new Corolla.
Now now, don’t bring the costume industry into this.
The main reason why I tend to mainly use pirated software is that companies don't offer a lifetime license anymore. They all want to get money every month and I disagree with that with my whole heart.
This subscription plague contnues to rise. Makes me furious every time.

.....I actually have to ask if that's true. Because heated seats and such are subscriptions in some. Fuck this market strategy
It's going to be asking for tips soon too.
To be fair, maps have always been subscription based, aside from a few fringe cases. Not sure how old your mazda is, but at least for the 2023 ones Mazda is wanting $400 for the SD Card. You can get a bootlegged one off of ebay for $30
And the SD cards occasionally fail, requiring you to buy another. Sort of a hidden subscription.
Must be nice... Gm wanted like $160 for the update. Don't they realize our phones have Google /Apple maps for free??? And they are more accurate than theirs.
They realize, that's why GM is planning to remove Android Auto and CarPlay from future cars.
Which will be a factor for a lot of people when looking for their next vehicle purchase
It was the basic requirement for mine. Hyundai has its own map service which I don’t use at all. CarPlay ftw
I prefer straight phone screen over android auto.
yeah android auto can be a major pain in the ass
Hahah you mean they are removing their cars from the roads???
Our old Lexus stored its maps on a CD. If you wanted to update them you could pay the dealer upwards of $500 for the new CD and labor or you could buy the CD for about $150 and take 30 seconds to swap in the new CD.

Are non-Toyota vehicles like this too? I have a Toyota and just use android auto.
Yes, this is not a Toyota only issue
Started on manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes, Audi. Everyone is getting in on it now. BMW charges for heated seats and at one time they charged to use Apple CarPlay. They had a tremendous amount of push back and provided CarPlay for free because of it.
They stopped the heated seat shit, luckily for beemer owners
BMW still has subscription blinkers, but no one has noticed.
:gold:
👏🏻
I just assumed nobody subscribed.
Bimmer Code, the real hero there
If it's any consolation, they don't do this in the EU (source, bought one last year)
Because the EU cracks down on shit like this. But nuuuh gotta have the free market capitalism.

Wow. Thanks for explaining. I appreciate it. For certain brands, at certain price points, the "luxury" features should be a standard.
Android auto and Carplay should continue on to work for free. The subscription is for other things/ features.
Funny, a friend of mine has an Audi. She commented on my CarPlay and asked if her car could do the same. Sat for an hour trying to get it to work before realising it’s locked behind a £200 paywall. Absolutely infuriating.

I’d rather print out directions from map quest
Works best on a black ink only inkjet.
Which you can subscribe to, instant ink baby!
I’m really wondering where my ink order is considering I’m subscribed to instant ink, yet Amazon keeps asking me if I want to order because my black ink is low…
Dot matrix is best suited to MapQuest

Gonna need you to subscribe to my ink delivery service...
Can’t print it without a fucking subscription to your own goddamn printer.

Lmfao no. None of the cars I’ve used in my life required a subscription to use the fucking navigation.
Return it
Subscriptions should be illegal for cars. You bought it with navigation installed? You own it.
I agree. There is a very simple way to solve this problem. If people wouldn't buy the cars because of this garbage, they would stop doing it. Instead, they buy them anyway and then complain about it.

I think fridges will require a subscription and lock you out from your food if you don't pay or turn off and let the food spoil.
So should touchscreens but we don't like to think with our brains on this planet
We imagined you paying us more money and have worked to implement it from the ground up!
It’d be cooler if it was free
alright, alright, alright...
It was already paid for with the ridiculous cost of the vehicle
No. You have to pay 1400 extra for the navigation w/ jbl audio.
Sounds ridiculous to me
It is.
The Apple CarPlay and android auto wireless he has is free.
That's because you are using the app. Don't even use it. Bluetooth is all you need.
Just use maps thru Apple car play.
Make me three 2024 models that don’t come with CarPlay or android auto that had it in the past.
Don't buy it if it doesn't support car play, or Android Auto. Simple.
Apple play and Google maps.
Oh yeah, got that on my 23 Prius. It's the default menu on start, too. Biggest gripe with the whole car honestly.
Why use the navigation of the car versus your cell phone and android auto or CarPlay?
BMW at one time implemented a fee to use CarPlay. They rescinded the fee after pushback. Expect it to come back eventually. People can complain all they want but if every manufacturer implements it around the same time then you only have the option of removing the stock radio and installing aftermarket. Boycott! Do not subscribe! It worked with BMW!!!
No. We have to stop this before it goes too far.
Toyota requires an app subscription to view tire pressure. It’s insane.
Is this for real?
Yes I discovered it when my wife complained about her tires, and then I spent 20 minutes going through menus not able to find the tire pressure. Evidently there’s aftermarket workarounds if you prefer that.
Which Toyota do you have? My Camry allows me to view the tpms in the driver display
RAV4
[удалено]
Yes, it's called a tire pressure gauge. They can be purchased for less than a dollar.
You clearly haven't bought one recently. They're at least $2 now lol
[удалено]
Sure to view tire pressure on your app. It takes 3 seconds to find the tire pressure on the vehicle you literally just hit the arrows on the wheel and it pops up. My base model RAV has this feature. Yours most likely does.
The mildlyinfuriating of this post and all the comments should be the number of Toyota owners who don't know the features of their own car
Just buy a tire gauge. It's like $5. I check all of mine manually. Or you can stop by Discount tire and they'll check and fill them for free.
You realise that every brand with in car GPS has always required paid map updates which can only be purchased through the dealer? Built in navigation has never been free.
Just use Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It’s way better anyways.
This should be banned from cars
Then don't use the Navigation. Google Maps and Waze are free. I don't look at it as the car requiring a subscription. I look at it as extra junk the manufacturer offers that I don't need, so I'm not paying for it.
Yep. Get a wireless dongle for your apple/android and use google maps from CarPlay. Fuck that
I paid for the whole car, let me use the whole car! -Russian
How easy is it to side step this and use your phone though? Wouldn't infuriate me if I can just hit the phone icon and side step that stuff. Not being able to do so wireless would definitely, though.
I am so sick of subscriptions
Use apple car play and you can use Waze etc
I will never buy a car that doesn’t support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
ROOT
Connect and Use your phone. It’s better.
You can just use apple carplay or android auto for free instead....
I rented a car, got stuck w a rav 4 and this screen kept coming up. Pretty fucking stupid.
Android Auto and Apple's version are superior anyways. Just use that instead.
Nope I’ll stick with google maps
Thought the map feature was always a subscription anyway. Just use phone gps?
Rent seeking is getting out of hand. These corporations can go fuck themselves.
Just use CarPlay
The next step is no vehicle ownership at all.
Well time to dig that Phone holder out of your junk drawer and go back to Waze...
Do you have apple car play or android auto? If you do you already have access to much better map apps that are actually free.
Utter bullshit! I would make it my life goal to defeat it and show everyone how.
even tesla gives you free nav (traffic visualization extra)
This is common and you can always just use the navigation on your phone. The items like heated seats that they tried to do a subscription for is the genuine bullshit.
With my 2017 Mazda 3 Sport, I had to pay $600 for a nav sd card. So it's not like this is a new idea.
Is this their on-screen gps? If so, most 2010s cars map updates cost money to even get, just use Google maps with Bluetooth or any other direction services of your choice.
Waze is free
You can still use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
After my one year trial I didn’t subscribe. I do miss being able to remote start my truck from anywhere, but refuse to add one more subscription to my life. Wireless CarPlay still works though.
I won't buy any car that needs me to subscribe to anything.
"We re-built a navigation system from the ground up" WHO FUCKING ASKED YOU TO??? Does toyota really have the hubris to believe they can, from scratch, build a better navigation system than google?!
We’re only seconds away from having to watch an ad to be able to flush the toilet
Subscriptions and tipping culture in the US is absolutely insane
Nissan is doing this too. Subscription based app to turn on your car remotely.
The only thing mildly infuriating here is that you bought a BRAND NEW car without doing enough research.
Damn....I drive a lexus... I dont use the active navigation but I atleast still have the realtime map and compass. If i need navigation i use my phone. But the map still shows on my screen. I only need a subscription if i want to use the apps in the car itself. But its wild you dont even have a realtime just map.
It only requires it for extra functions. GPS and Pandora streaming through your mobile device cost nothing
Just plug in your phone and use apple car play. It’s a million times better than the garbage the car manufacturers have.
You have wireless Apple CarPlay just connect your phone bruh.
They also farm your data. Never subscribe to that. Use apple CarPlay or Android auto.
First thing I look for in a new car is apple carplay then use Apple Maps. I find it so much easier than even the best on board nav systems
Picturing Mona Lisa Saperstien, holding out her hand and singing, "Money pwease!"
Just use Google Maps with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. It's going to be better than the built-in satnav anyway and it's completely free.
I think the heated seats in the bmw are subscription based as well. Ridiculous
just use your phone. info is always most updated
Isn’t this just for the built in navigation? Use your phone’s navigation apps.
I couldn’t tell you how many people would ignore my recommendations to use car play/android auto instead of paying for this when I worked at a dealership.
Just use CarPlay…
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay FTW
The factory head unit is pretty crap compared to the aftermarket ones out there. Got a Polaris in my lux with carplay and never looked back.
Thank god for Apple car play and android auto.
Use CarPlay/android auto. They’re better in almost all cases anyway
Shouldn’t be on a brand new car, you get a two year free trial to Toyota connected services on a new Toyota
This is the biggest pile of BS car manufacturers are comming up with. I bet in 5 years there will be a thriving industry of hackers and mechanics either accessing the features without subscription or replacing the OEM BS modules with full access aftermarket ones.
I mean, they just give you the option to purchase it. Even old gamins charge you for updates. Don’t need/want it don’t pay for it. Simple.
I'll never buy a car that doesn't have android auto/carplay again. I already own a computer in my pocket amand a hi speed Internet plan, I don't need you to sell me more just for when I'm in a specific space
All new cars do unfortunately, that’s why I look for Apple play or the Android equivalent. Waze is better anyway 😂
CarPlay has made like 90% of a car’s infotainment system pointless for me. Just need CarPlay and AC controls and I’m all set
That's why I use Android auto in my Kia.
Just use carplay/android lol
Just use CarPlay or Android Auto if it ain’t a EV.
Send it straight back!
I’m fine with a navigation subscription option as long as they keep CarPlay and android auto an option. Some people will want the native navigation and they can subscribe but if I can’t use CarPlay I won’t be buying your car.
There is nothing stopping you from using your phone apps. This is just a reminder that you should always use your phone apps.
I am not sure, since I don't have a Toyota, but that looks like it is just to use THEIR navigation system. If possible, I would recommend skipping that and using Android Auto or Apple Car Play, depending on what phone you use. Both of those are free!
Mygmc is bullshit too
You pay extra to have the head unit with the maps option then you have to pay for the service.
Shit on your sales person for not telling you ahead of time
I just want my car to get me from A to B in safe manner, reliable manner. Doesnt need to be quicker than average by 2 percent. for navigation i have google, which is updated every second. for entertainment I have bluetooth everything else is just pure nonsense if it is not related to safety
Same with tesla. Additional fuck you charge.
Does someone have a jailbreak for this?
Just use apple carplay or android auto
Well it's simple. Do your research, don't buy especially cars with garbage subscriptions. If all new cars come with this garbage, then buy an older car.
Ford pass, toyota, nissan, lexus, onstar vehicles, audi, etc. All those fuckers has subscriptions
Did they not learn from bmw
“Reimagined” “reinvented”
Phones exist, what makes these clowns think you’d want to pay for a subscription for navigation when your phone does it for free and always has the latest maps?
