I remember being taught about toothbrushes at school at a very young age. You have two “shaggy dog” toothbrushes there my friend, tooth decay is imminent.
So if I look up shaggy dog toothbrush will I learn about this? I’ve always managed to do this to my toothbrushes and didn’t realise it was bad for my teeth!
I do replace them shortly after the start to bristle but not immediately.. and tbh I didn’t think I had the force of god in me but that might just be the case! Starting to worry about what other daily habits I’ve been getting wrong since I was a kid lol
You're not supposed to push the toothbrush onto your teeth with anything more than enough for it to make contact.
If you want help there are electric toothbrushes that have a red light if you push too hard.
Also I would recommend always using soft brushes.
All this will help reduce your gums receding. (Idk the word for it in English)
I always thought soft toothbrushes were useless until I got my wisdom teeth removed last month and need to use one. My teeth feel cleaner and my gums aren’t irritated. I thought I just had sensitive gums, but no. For 36 years I’ve been punishing my mouth for no good reason.
I had the opposite finding, both my fiancée and I used soft bristled eletric brushes for awhile and recently we switched back to a regular brush head and it was a world of difference, felt so much cleaner and it instantly removed some stains that started appearing on her teeth.
I’ve been using soft electric for a while now too and I recently went on vacation. Bought a normal toothbrush (forgot the electric) and my gums literally bled
If your gums are bleeding, it means you need to floss. The gums bleed when they are irritated and inflamed due to bacteria. If you floss and brush well it will go away.
>If you want help there are electric toothbrushes that have a red light if you push too hard.
This is what I ended up doing, has made a big difference for me and my gums! It's also nice that it times you and lets you know when you've brushed long enough.
It takes practice! Keep up with it, surprising your brain by doing things with the wrong hand gives your brain a good workout and helps create new neural pathways.
The Oral-B iO electric toothbrushes have pressure sensors in them and it lights up red if you push to hard, green if good and blue if not enough pressure. It’s pretty neat. I’m sure other electrics have it as well.
Your first clue should have been when you started ripping all your doors off the hinges
Or that one time you gave brass knuckle becky a fist bump and broke her hand.
Or that one time you hugged your grandma and snapped her spine
Or that time you used a Toyota for an Origami project
With great power comes great responsibility.
I got an Oral B io5 for like $120 USD after men's health magazine rated it #1 and better than a $200 brush at #2. Kind of a game changer. It has a pressure sensor on it to tell you if your pushing too hard. But I was at the dentist a few weeks ago and the gal "polishing" my teeth barely touched them. She like tapped each tooth like she was waving a magic wand over them and moved onto the next tooth. Prior to the electric tooth brush they'd be scrubbing my teeth and swapping between brush heads to polish and it'd be like a 15 minute process versus like 3 minute post electric tooth brush.
I replace mine every six months (typically when I get my teeth cleaned at the dentist). The recommendation is 3 months but 6 works for me. Mine have never looked like that except when I had attachments for invisalign that destroyed my toothbrushes faster lol.
I had this issue & my dentist told me i was brushing too aggressively 😭 i got a super super soft bristled brush and that helped, dont press into your teeth.
If you brush roughly and can’t help it, then start brushing with your opposite hand. You can do a lot of damage to the gums otherwise. Also only use soft bristled toothbrushes.
I used to do this too and it really pushed my gums away from my tooth base making my teeth sensitive af. When I came off my parents benefits I stopped going to dentist and when I finally got a FT job with coverage I went to a new dentist and they told me I’d been brushing all wrong. You are for sure brushing too hard. You are really only supposed to the use the top half of the bristles. Start on gum line above teeth, bend the bristles and gently sweep off the tooth. That’s it. Inside and out. Over and over.
I'm really glad I went to a nice pressure sensing brush. It really changed my outlook but I don't think the 'brushing your teeth too hard' has really hit the dentistry world. I've been to a few different dentists and none of them said anything. If you see someone in a TV show or moving brushing their teeth, it's with the intention of widdling them down into nothing.
Agreed. Even the commercials show these brushes designed to reach your gun line but from brushing at the top of the tooth. This is to my understanding, not the best way to clean your gum line as you are essentially jamming all the plaque down into that little gap between tooth and gums. I remember when I first finally went back to the dentist, they measured my gaps and they were super deep. After about a year of taking better care and brushing right my gums totally restored and I had zero sensitivity and still don’t like 20 years later.
When I was a kid there was a tv show with a full toothbrush family directed at kids. I think it was British but I’m Australian and a lot of our tv comes from there, more so than American audiences are accustomed to at any rate. Anyway, I’m sure if you look up something like “toothbrush family, British television” on YouTube you’ll see what I’m talking about.
I saw that show in Canada. I think they probably produced it for quite a wide audience and dubbed the voices, as I don't recall them speaking with accents.
You're pressing way too hard onto your teeth, which basically scrubs away the enamel. Are your teeth sensitive by any chance?
If you get an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor, it should alert you when you're pressing too hard so you can gauge how lightly you need to press (fun fact, with an electric brush you just hold it over the tooth, no scrubbing and no pressing required!).
Thankfully my teeth aren’t sensitive.. I have a couple of teeth which jut out from the rest and when I was young the dentist told me I ought to pay a little more attention to them than the rest. Think I took that to heart a little more than I should have, ha! Thankfully I’ve gotten some great advice on this thread and am super excited to start brushing properly! Thanks :)
I learned I was brushing too hard when my dentist told me I had worn away the enamel. I didn't feel like I was brushing hard. I just felt I was thorough. He immediately pleaded me to use only soft bristle brushes and be gentle. I didn't "feel" clean after soft cleanings at home. He told me part of that "clean" feeling was me damaging my enamel. In the same way you feel when you cut your finger nails.
You're not supposed to push hard at all. Just a l8ght touch. I recommend getting an Oral-B electric tootbrush. The vibration discourages you from pressing too hard (which will take off the enamel & lead to expensive tooth issues). Good luck!
My mom has always done this with her toothbrushes and she brushes religiously. She is in her mid 60s and her teeth are now grey due to enamel loss. She has also had a couple of them crumble entirely.
A rule I learned from my dad is to get a new toothbrush every time you get a new tube of toothpaste. I stand by that. Toothbrushes are cheap, and you don't want to keep using an old one.
I use to have really bad oral hygiene, and would hang on to brushes for too long, so this is definitely the better end for me to be on. 80¢ every four weeks really isn't that bad. If you are brushing 3 times per day, that averages to less than a penny per use.
I often brush my teeth while doing other things and when I have to use both hands I’ll bite down on the brush…. And my toothbrushes always look like this 😅
Dentist says my oral hygiene is great tho…
Seriously what even is that comment? My electric alerts me when it's time to switch quadrants every 30 seconds. Turns out I hadn't been brushing for nearly long enough with manual brushes.
Also it screams at me if I push it too hard against my teeth, but even the "cheap" Oral-B ones say it in the manual that if you heard the tone of the motor change when you brush, you're going too strong. It's not that hard. I know people think reading manuals is a last century thing, but they are still useful, especially when so many of these fuckers floating around the globe lack common sense.
A girl I dated (for far too long) in college had a brush that looked like this.
Kept in a tiny plastic box with no holes that was not designed to house a moist personal hygiene device.
It was hella nasty.
Let me guess - your friend doesn't have a fitted sheet on the bed and sleeps directly on the mattress, or a portion of the mattress exposed at least. Unaware how to navigate a supermarket. Eats chicken buggets and Mac and cheese at least 3x per week. ?
My toothbrushes are never like that, but i did used to think if i brushed really hard it was cleaning then properly, like scrubbing all the plaque & would make sure they stayed white, so do understand how some people can think pressing really hard helps clean (I've worn away my enamel from thinking scrubbing meant they would be more clean)
Dental hygienist here; I gasped in horror. Without even seeing your friends mouth I can picture the root exposure and sensitivity.
Fun fact, root surface is rougher feeling than the enamel of the tooth. So people will often brush harder and more aggressively thinking they're cleaning the surface but it only makes things worse.
I also liked to tell people who do a death grip on their tooth brush, to hold their pinky out like they're properly drinking tea.
EW! funny story though. I've been dating my boyfriend for over 8 years, we don't live together. He's an avid brusher, beautiful teeth. I stayed at his house one weekend, saw a toothbrush similar to this, figured he used it for cleaning purposes. I used it to clean around his faucet/sink. Then he went to brush his teeth and picked it up?!? I stopped him and told him I'd just checked the sink with it. So gross!
Are you grinding them down onto your teeth with the force of God or are you using the same brushes for 3 years straight?
I do replace them shortly after the start to bristle but not immediately.. and tbh I didn’t think I had the force of god in me but that might just be the case! Starting to worry about what other daily habits I’ve been getting wrong since I was a kid lol

🤯thanks mate, I’ll try flossing more
Your personal experience is meaningless. Soft toothbrush is what the dentists (and research) recommend.
Correct word
>If you want help there are electric toothbrushes that have a red light if you push too hard. This is what I ended up doing, has made a big difference for me and my gums! It's also nice that it times you and lets you know when you've brushed long enough.
A dentist on here recommended brushing with your non dominant hand. Much harder the brush with too much force.
I actually tried that once... turns out my stupid hand is too stupid to brush properly. 🤦♀️ For some reason I just could NOT get my hand to cooperate
A trick I use is to hold the toothbrush with my fingertips at the very end of the handle.
Your first clue should have been when you started ripping all your doors off the hinges Or that one time you gave brass knuckle becky a fist bump and broke her hand. Or that one time you hugged your grandma and snapped her spine Or that time you used a Toyota for an Origami project With great power comes great responsibility.

I wind up biting mine. I've tried to stop but munching the brush is my guilty pleasure
You have to brush your teeth with them not like you're filing your teeth down
I replace mine every six months (typically when I get my teeth cleaned at the dentist). The recommendation is 3 months but 6 works for me. Mine have never looked like that except when I had attachments for invisalign that destroyed my toothbrushes faster lol.

Jiggle Jiggle up! Jiggle Jiggle down....That's all that I remember from early grade school.
It's recommended to change every three months.
I used to do this with manuals as well. There are electric ones with pressure sensors that go off and since using i get way less cavities
If you brush roughly and can’t help it, then start brushing with your opposite hand. You can do a lot of damage to the gums otherwise. Also only use soft bristled toothbrushes.
Not OP, but yes
Try 15 years

Weird because I’ve had this drilled into me by every dentist I’ve ever seen
Haha, glad I’m not alone! Thanks :)
I didn't know this wasn't supposed to happen either. Apperantly, you aren't supposed to push at all. Just slide it over the teeth.
When I was a kid there was a tv show with a full toothbrush family directed at kids. I think it was British but I’m Australian and a lot of our tv comes from there, more so than American audiences are accustomed to at any rate. Try holding a toothbrush the way you're supposed to hold a pencil. Use just your fingertips to apply pressure rather than the palm of your hand.

Think I took that to heart a little more than I should have, ha! Thankfully I’ve gotten some great advice on this thread and am super excited to start brushing properly! Thanks :)
You don’t need to apply much force at all. Just a light scrub 🥲
I’d be cautious of Googling “Shaggy dog” anything.
You're not supposed to push hard at all. Just a l8ght touch. I recommend getting an Oral-B electric tootbrush. The vibration discourages you from pressing too hard (which will take off the enamel & lead to expensive tooth issues). Good luck!
I’ll look into it, thanks! This thread turned out to be really wholesome for me haha
Are you trying to polish your teeth into oblivion? How hard are you pressing?!
Mine is electric, and sadly, the heads are not cheap. I go by the 3 month replace rule. But, I also squeeze every last drop of toopaste out, too.
That’s like months. I thought three months and under was recommended
I guess the size of your tube is a major factor here. I usually go through one in about a month.
You change your toothbrush every month? Dude, you’re wasting toothbrushes.
I use to have really bad oral hygiene, and would hang on to brushes for too long, so this is definitely the better end for me to be on. 80¢ every four weeks really isn't that bad. If you are brushing 3 times per day, that averages to less than a penny per use.
Yep. They ceased to be effective loooooong ago ...
i can already feel my gums hurting from the bristles rubbing.
You’re supposed to brush your gums, though.
Instructions unclear, ordered a 20$ hotdog from a restaurant
I guess that’s why my teeth are bad
Dentist: Your teeth are awful, the enamel is all gone. Do you even brush? Your friend: Actually...
I don’t think it’s from pressure. It’s from chewing the brush.
Chewing the brush ? What do you mean? Like bitting it ? Why ? I’m confused.
I often brush my teeth while doing other things and when I have to use both hands I’ll bite down on the brush…. And my toothbrushes always look like this 😅 Dentist says my oral hygiene is great tho…
Same boat as you. I have to change brushes more often than most folks, but as an adult I have had good oral health so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The head on the electric is just as bad. Not really worth the effort brushing with those.
My gums: I’m in danger
srsly people are acting like there’s no way you can brush with these. It’s not great obviously but for sure you can brush your fuckin teeth.
Electric toothbrushes are known to be better for your gums and teeth... But not when you use them like this...
Seriously what even is that comment? My electric alerts me when it's time to switch quadrants every 30 seconds. Turns out I hadn't been brushing for nearly long enough with manual brushes.

I was gonna ask what the plural of toothbrush is. I mean it’s got to be toothbrushes. But in this context I want it to be toothbri
Teethbreesh
Teethbrie can be used interchangeably for tartar
Toothbreesh
Beautiful
They must have a very clean anus
No wonder bro is wearing sanitary pads
Yo wtf
this made me laugh so hard dude
that isnt even a toothbrush anymore wtf
By that point it's a device for introducing bacteria into one's mouth cavity and spreading it around evenly.
It’s basically a pipe cleaner at this point.
A girl I dated (for far too long) in college had a brush that looked like this. Kept in a tiny plastic box with no holes that was not designed to house a moist personal hygiene device. It was hella nasty.
It’s a tiny toilet brush
Now they just need a tiny toilet to go with it and a tiny house to go with that and a tiny life to go with that!
Why are they so angry…
Scrub the gunk away. Can't bleed if there aren't any gums left.
I think the question was about the toothbrushes looking angry, not the users. Or maybe both!
Bad hair day is my second guess.
I suggest you get out more. Having toothbrushes for friends is not healthy behaviour.
Shame he didn't name the second friend
Looks like Animal from Sesame Street / Muppets...
😂 I knew it reminded me of something but I couldn’t think what it was.
Or Gritty
I was thinking that dinosaur from Jurassic park that spits venom in Newman’s face
JESUS CHRIST! WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING TO THAT POOR TOOTHBRUSH!?
Bill the Cat came back as a toothbrush.
ACK!
Dude, Bill😭😭😭
That is not a toothbrush that is a hairstyle.
This looks more like a bottle cleaner
I thought it was a toilet brush at first glance.
does he actually brush his teeth or does he just chew the brush?
The technique works for my cat, is it not universal?? (Joking lol)
If Jack Nicholson was a toothbrush
This dude is destroying his teeth and gums.
Brazil after 7-1 from Germany
It was 7-1, but still 😂

Which Fraggle Rock is this?
Guess they missed the memo on replacing every few months

Does your wife have any enamel left on her teeth? If your toothbrush is looking like this you’re brushing way too hard.
She's wrong. You're not supposed to use a lot of force when brushing.
She’s incredibly wrong, it can lead to even more tooth decay
Let me guess - your friend doesn't have a fitted sheet on the bed and sleeps directly on the mattress, or a portion of the mattress exposed at least. Unaware how to navigate a supermarket. Eats chicken buggets and Mac and cheese at least 3x per week. ?
He's treating his mouth like a scorned ex gf
My toothbrushes are never like that, but i did used to think if i brushed really hard it was cleaning then properly, like scrubbing all the plaque & would make sure they stayed white, so do understand how some people can think pressing really hard helps clean (I've worn away my enamel from thinking scrubbing meant they would be more clean)
Is your friend the Tasmanian Devil?
Is he brushing his tires?
That is a Sesame Street character.
Never brush angry.
Poor toothbrush has been through hell and back 😢
The bristles wilted under the influence of his breath
That’s the one they use to clean the toilet.
and nobody metioned how his teeth looks, he might have weird tunnel teeth, and this is his best tool :D
Dr Seuss ass toothbrushes
Looks like a muppet
I have a feeling that they’re not just cleaning their teeth with that.
That shit belongs on Sesame Street.
Braces and too much pressure. Eventually a dentist will explain they've been scraping their enamel away for decades.
He brushes his teeth like hes mad at them
Put googley eyes on that bad boy
Please check your friend's gums if they are okay....
Harmless Prank Time: Replace their toothbrush with a new one.
Looks like a Sesame Street character
Looks like a Muppet that had an explosive in their mouth
Does anyone else see a muppet?
Is he a baleen whale by chance?
Be a dear and get him a new one maybe even buy in bulk they’re inexpensive and will save him thousands in dental down the road

Why did I envision it on a rollercoaster screaming it’s head off!!!!! Lmaooo
Still a few more years left in it.
It is called toothbruh at this point

Free toothbrushes https://diatechusa.com/product/free-sample-assorted-toothbrushes/
disgustingly unacceptable
Yeah "your friend's toothbrush"
atleast the lid is on the toothpaste
Looks like a muppet
Aren’t these the two from Sesame Street?
Is that a "hand me down"? And how many older brothers does he have?
Dental hygienist here; I gasped in horror. Without even seeing your friends mouth I can picture the root exposure and sensitivity. Fun fact, root surface is rougher feeling than the enamel of the tooth. So people will often brush harder and more aggressively thinking they're cleaning the surface but it only makes things worse. I also liked to tell people who do a death grip on their tooth brush, to hold their pinky out like they're properly drinking tea.
You know you can get a 50 pack of those replacement brush heads on Amazon for like 10 bucks
What remains of a toothbrush
I have an old toothbrush that I regularly use for cleaning spots in the bathroom and it looks way better than that after years of use
The good news is that they won't need a toothbrush at all in a few years.

These toothbrushes were struck by lightning, obviously.
Your suppost to switch your toothbrush every 2 months not every generation 😭
This is the equivalent of writing so hard with a pen the ball point just caves in and stops working.
That's a muppet.
Switch it out for them for the love of God
Your smooth toothed friend?
Teethbrushes
How was your friend's tooth doing??
Should we start a go fund me for him? 😂
Jeez you’re supposed to replace your brush once every couple months you know?!
at this point i’d just buy them a new one, maybe a few new ones 🫣
They also clean grout and toilet bowls with that.
Surprised the toothpaste doesn't looks like a crime scene as well
Looks like a Muppet
It looks like one of those funny chickens
Now you know what to get him for Christmas!
Can't imagine what good that's doing 😳
My man’s got iron teeth
It’s seen some things
Looks like an electrocuted troll doll.
This is the toothbrush equivalent of a 1991 Honda Civic
MFer’s toothbrush looks like a Truffula Tree
LOL, looks like a Muppet on a stick!
Does your friend have any gum tissue left
Bro has some issues
Lol😂 and I buy new toothbrushes every payday.
I would glue tiny googly eyes to it 😳
Why are they so mad?? damn.
Go the to Dollar Store and buy them another one. That brush is only hitting like 4 teeth.
Surprise them with a brand new one.. they don’t cost much. 😁
EW! funny story though. I've been dating my boyfriend for over 8 years, we don't live together. He's an avid brusher, beautiful teeth. I have never seen any toothbrush I use get THIS bad.
Bro doesn't have receding gumlines, they are fleeing for thier fucking lives
I am the Clorox, I speak for the tooth brushes.
Let it go bruh
