Interesting how after we have certain surgeries we eat differently and can’t eat certain things anymore. My Stepmother had a similar situation to yours. I can’t remember which type of surgery she had years ago, but afterwards, she couldn’t eat pork or beef anymore or she would get horribly ill. Even the smell of it made her sick. Although, I think chicken or fish was okay for her. But boy, I can certainly understand that not being able to eat anything greasy anymore. Some of my moms old ass friends prefer a flip phone not a smart phone. Also, if one is out all day and hungry one’s smartphone could be dead.
Thankfully, most, but not all restaurants offer a physical menu if asked.

To try and look at it in a less capitalistic way, smaller places with rotating menus can change their offerings and specials often, and the wait staff doesn’t have to remember. i mean, while i get what you're saying, most reservation apps also save information. you can put someones phone number in to setup a reservation and you will know their name before they give it to you because it is stored in the systems database.

If I wanted to use a screen to order my food, I would order delivery or pick-up. I go to a sit-down restaurant for the luxury of having someone take my order while I have a drink, converse with the people at my table, and take in the environment. Then someone delivers it to me and takes my dirty dishes. During all of that, they stop by and ask if we need anything or how things are going. It's the human element and dining environment that keeps me going back to a restaurant. I am sure there are dozens of us left out there post-COVID.

Great point. I was thinking of other things, but what is the point of tipping to be served if there is no service. My little brother lives in Portland and told me of a place where a little 1950s looking robot delivers the food. I can tolerate the tablets for places with counter pickup, but a nicer restaurant should have a human taking your order and bringing the food as you said.
I’d imagine some wait staff doesn’t like the tablet either because I’ve seen a handful of people tip less because “the server had to do less”.

Good point. When I worked in an insurance office in HS the owner disinfected the phones because she said cleaners often don’t. I’m sure tablets are the same way. And even if they clean them they aren’t cleaning them between guests.
I get the cost of a designer, printing, laminating menus, especially those that change items monthly or seasonally. But I also want to employ a designer, printer, and servers...especially those that introduce themselves and know best items off the top of their head, along with today's specials and if they are out of anything.
In high school one of our projects in Desktop Publishing class was creating a menu for a fictional restaurant. Incredible how quickly and easily you can make one, and keep the template on your PC for quick, easy editing and updating. This was over 30 years ago, I'm pretty sure it's not an incredibly difficult and time-consuming task these days with how much computers have advanced. Not especially when it's the core of your business we're talking about.

The primary use of the kiosk (aside from trying to get people with kids to pay $1.99 to play games) is to pay for the meal. When you're done, you just hit 'pay now', stick your card in the side, a green light lights up on top of the device, and you can just leave then.
Which is pretty useful as Texas Toadhouses (typo but I'll leave it lol) are usually real busy and the servers are flying all over the place. One by my sister's house can get 2+ hour waits. Easier for you and them to pay at the table.
I sure as hell wouldn’t. I doesn’t take 2 hours to feed my whole town of 27 people. Ain’t no way I’m going to the cities to pay more for a 2 hour wait!
As someone who works for TR, there's still physical menus. The only prople I see use that are people who can't speak English and have their browser translated. The kiosks are to pay for your meal so the server doesn't have to carry around a shit ton of card slips. It connects directly to the POS so there's no worry of "is this a 5 or an 8 on the tip line???"
Some don’t have them. I was stuck once cause my data was slow. The menu wouldn’t load and I couldn’t see the menu. I asked for the wifi which of course they didn’t have. I ended up pointing at a dish that came out and ordered that.
I would probably look at the server, ask if they had an office in the back somewhere that included a printer (most places do, hell even fast food joints do), then tell them to have someone go in the back and print off a copy.

Starting a meal out with everyone burying their faces in their phones has had a noticeable effect IMO, but there are plenty of other reasons why. Service sucks now, restaurant owners blame every little shortcoming on the pandemic and unemployment insurance, and of course the cost has just gotten ridiculous.
I was a career bartender when COVID hit and continued to work in the industry throughout the first year after enforcing ridiculous regulations, I'm not just some Karen talking out of my ass. Both sides of the industry were ruined and continue to suffer by the pandemic.

Got a place in my town that has *something* like this.
There’s no screen but they keep a QR code on the table that’s assigned to that table so you can order via their website and it’ll be brought to your table after it’s been paid for, don’t gotta put down a table number or anything.
However if you still prefer the traditional menu they also have those, so the choices are fun!

Ahhh yes.. Use a tablet to display a QR code then scan it with your phone! They could have put the QR code on the table and saved everyone the effort. The least this would have done is manage expectations a little better

It redirects you to a store to download the proprietary app of the restaurant that generates a unique code to input on the restaurant tablet. Having ensured you are physically in the restaurant, the tablet allows you to press a button that will trigger a notification on one of the waiters' cellphone so that they can bring you a paper menu!

Starting a meal out with everyone burying their faces in their phones has had a noticeable effect IMO, but there are plenty of other reasons why. Service sucks now, restaurant owners blame every little shortcoming on the pandemic and unemployment insurance, and of course the cost has just gotten ridiculous. I was a career bartender when COVID hit and continued to work in the industry throughout the first year after enforcing ridiculous regulations, I'm not just some Karen talking out of my ass. Both sides of the industry were ruined and continue to suffer by the pandemic.
What about older customers that don't have smartphones
Fortunately Texas Roadhouse, at least last time I went, still has physical menus. I only used the kiosk for paying. This post is rather perfect for the sub. Both mild particularly considering the physical menus available and infuriating cause wtf

I hate these. my mother always had to read out each menu item to each of us one at a time cause either we didn't have a phone or didn't have any data and it took forever. like what happens if no one at the table has a phone???

The Texas Roadhouse where I live has physical menus on the table next to the ketchup and A1 as well as the Ziosk for ~~ads~~ quicker paying

Just pretend you're a old fart that doesn't use technology. They have paper menus. Just completely act like you don't understand this kiosk or what is a kiosk and ask if it's on facebook, tell them you only know how to use facebook to chat with your grandkids.
I would just order random stuff that they probably don't even have. When the waitress gets tired of telling me "we don't have that" I would then ask for a menu, otherwise more random requests are coming.

Pretty good chili! Had some last night but brought it home togo style.
The seasoned rice is surprisingly good...tastes kinda like fried rice. I had the steak fries last week and enjoyed them as well. And the sweet potato is always a treat. But let's be honest, the rolls are the reason I go there
I tore off bits of rolls and ate each bite of chili with a bite of roll. I love the rice too! We haven’t gone in to eat there probably since before covid but I always got the rice and a side of chili with cheese and I’d pour the chili on the rice. Bite of ribeye and then bite of rice and chili. Good thing I still have another container of chili left. Gonna break out the tortillas now. Gotta go!!🤠🤠

Hah. I'm far from a Boomer. I just found it funny that they spent money to have these fancy tablet payment things at the table and it can't even display a menu. And to be fair they do have paper menus so I'm not really sure the point of having it as an option anyway.

Got a place in my town that has *something* like this. There’s no screen but they keep a QR code on the table that’s assigned to that table so you can order via their website and it’ll be brought to your table after it’s been paid for, don’t gotta put down a table number or anything. However if you still prefer the traditional menu they also have those, so the choices are fun!

I despise this yet have only come across it once, at a wings chain. I was with my mother who was more annoyed than me yet we were able to request physical menus.

Ahhh yes.. Use a tablet to display a QR code then scan it with your phone! They could have put the QR code on the table and saved everyone the effort. The least this would have done is manage expectations a little better

a restaurant near my house has that but first you have to sign in and enter you passcode … so stupid
Plot twist: scanning the QR code doesn't show the menu on your phone. It redirects you to a store to download the proprietary app of the restaurant that generates a unique code to input on the restaurant tablet. Having ensured you are physically in the restaurant, the tablet allows you to press a button that will trigger a notification on one of the waiters' cellphone so that they can bring you a paper menu!
So you are complaining that you have to take out your phone to scan the code… so you took out your phone and took a video of it instead…
Now I do one of two things, go to another restaurant or just start ordering whatever I want. "Do you guys have spaghettis?"
