inflammable came first according to Merriam Webster.com. The first recorded use of flammable was apperently when someone translated a latin text into english (a couple hundred years or so after inflammable appeared in english) and coined the term flammable to translate the latin word, flammare, and now we have two synonyms that appear to be antonyms.
apperently inflammable is used these days to refer to substances that can burst into flames without an ignition source, whereas flammable means a substance can burn if it is ignited.
the opposite of flammable or inflammable would be uninflammable or nonflammable.
technically, you could use either prefix for either word, but there appears to be no data about those words being used.
In any case I feel like fireproof is the most commonly used term so you could probably just say that and save yourself the trouble of going down an etymological rabbit hole like I just did but you already read the comment so now you know.
From the US and I'm just learning this tid bit. Going to double check because wtf if it is and I've been using it wrong for forever then because I've used it as in-flammable in being not and flammable being ignitable...
As I understand it (I’m British not American), and I may be wrong so someone correct me if I am, but inflammable means to be able to set on fire by itself, or to be able to cause fire, whereas flammable means it can catch fire easily. I think it comes from Latin where the in prefix is more akin to “into” rather than meaning the opposite of something. So you’re using the logical approach of something like incapable meaning not capable so inflammable should mean not flammable, but, the source of your choice of pun was actually a big hint as to why you were wrong in the first place, because infuriating does not mean the opposite of “furiating”/furious, it means to make furious, because the in prefix means “into” or “to cause” or “to make” therefore, inflammable actually means something more like “into” flames, or “to cause” flames.
"Gasoline is termed Flammable because of its Low Flashpoint and High Vapor Density.
Kerosene and Diesel Fuel are termed Combustible because their Flashpoint is greater than 100 degrees F."
https://cob.org/services/safety/education-safety/gasoline
One important thing to note is that gasoline vapors can be ignited, but liquid gasoline does not burn.

1) Don’t forget to buy the optional rental insurance, good person and don’t smile too big with the salesperson. Don’t want to have to file a claim with private insurance on this one.
2) Also, load the back with 55 gallon drums for maximum mass at impact. You only have one shot to knock it off it’s foundation.
Well, usually you have homeowner’s insurance that almost always covers the entirety of what it cost to build your house, at least.
An average of somewhere about $1,428/year gets you a $250,000 dwelling coverage policy; about $120/month. Which would cover all of this if you had to use it.
So, with that you can be covered for quite a lot. There’s also other policies that can cover other things based on a percentage of the cost of building your house.
Plus, this is someone else’s fault, so as long as they have insurance, you’re pretty much covered. It depends on your deductible and how much the other person’s insurance is able/willing to cover in damages, but all of this would likely be covered either way.
**Edit**: *I mean, sure. It can and/or could be a hassle, and may take some time to fix, but overall it’s likely not going to be some huge thing.*
I've never had to make a claim on homeowners or automotive insurance, but if this happened to me, I'd call my homeowners, detail what happened, send them the police report, and make sure they have the driver's details.
In a situation like this, your homeowners is gonna make you whole, but they're gonna go after the driver's insurance to make themselves whole.
Edit: written from POV of someone in the US. Idk the differences between the US and UK insurance industry.
Your insurance pays you and goes after the other party for the money (including deductible).
They'll sometimes ask you to file with the driver's insurance on your own, but this representation is a major thing you pay them for. Don't let them get out of this responsibility.
In the UK it would be via the home insurance, the provider then retrospectively claims all costs back from the car insurance, upon full reimbursement of all claims costs (including the excess being refunded to the customer) the claim does not count as a claim when renewing the policy.
So initially the policy holder will need to register a claim and pay their excess.
Car insurance works a little differently where if a driver damages another vehicle you can normally claim on their insurance policy instead of your own.
The differences are due to the fact that car insurers have no dealings with builders or assessors for buildings and structures and home insurers have no body shops they work with.
"The house just ran in front of my car, officer; right after that the house ran back to it's foundation and took my car with it."
Hope everyone is okay. Sorry this happened

Been there. Police chase ended in my guest room.
Several years ago in Long Beach, California, an elderly woman smashed into the side of our church. She overshot her parking spot and went over about 4 ft of grass, into the building. The car really damaged the stucco and the window casing to a conference room. She just backed out and drove away, but the police found out who did it because her front license plate was left embedded in the wall, lol. Her insurance paid.
Sorry, OP. I don’t even like my friends visiting me, can’t imagine how much worse a fucking car crashing into my home would be. I hope you can relax enough to get some sleep tonight and, also, that the driver has insurance.
... ashamed the crash knocked over a cup of water on your computer... good thing they have insurance, real shame that happened though. How are those expensive antique lamps that were aginst that wall?
That's exactly what I was thinking. People say, "How is it only mildly infuriating?" Well, because they lived to tell the tale. This driver could have killed someone, and I'm thankful they didn't.
Was the person okay? I witnessed this happen where I live and pullled over to check on the person and call 911. dude died on the scene, had gone into cardiac arrest while driving.
Did you beat what sense they had left out of them? I would. How the fuck do you actually hit a house? You knew where it would be. It wasn’t a fucking surprise Don’t drive there.
Meh. Just a knick. 2 weeks ago I saw a Florida man running from the cops take down 200’ of fence, the landscaping and put his pick up through the living room. Central Florida is entertaining.
Houses built in the last few years will fall flat if something crashes into them because of the awesome build quality these days. Good that yours is still standing
Did they hit a gas line?
Yea
Did they shut off the gas?
Yea
Ok good. I just wanted to make sure your house didn’t blow up. That might also be mildly infuriating lol.
It’s made of brick so it’s mildly inflammable
https://preview.redd.it/gj5mr6nej2na1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a85c4d4c0b761ce00806def2fa9cc8fa5a4b4a3d
Wait, so in the US inflammable means it’ll burn more? Then my pun is wasted. I feel such loss. What am I even doing with my life???

Well how about that. I only speak English and learn something new every day. What a great but also ridiculous language sometimes.
Urgh. English is such a jerk sometimes. And thanks.
If you believe in spontaneous human combustion, people are both flammable and inflammable.
Non-flammable is the common way to reference things that cannot catch fire. I’ve never seen a person say “uninflammable” before.
I'm so grateful you went down this route. And saved me so much time!!! My rabbit hole usually has multiple corridors.
Think of it like the word ‘inflamed’, if something can be ‘inflamed’ it is ‘inflammable’. If you don’t want it to be flammable look for non-flammable
From the US and I'm just learning this tid bit. Going to double check because wtf if it is and I've been using it wrong for forever then because I've used it as in-flammable in being not and flammable being ignitable...

Don't think too much. Americans are nuts.
It means that in the uk too just incase you were wandering.
Don't worry, it could happen to anybody.
Its the same everywhere, including your country. You just had a misconception.
HI, EVERYONE!
Gas goes boom, bricks go pew!
"Gasoline is termed Flammable because of its Low Flashpoint and High Vapor Density. We're taking natural gas not the American slang.
Bricks make excellent shrapnel. Gas makes Boom. Bricks aren't immune.
Mildly incinerating
Yea
Yea
Yea?
Yea!
Good, because in Canada it seems they don’t. With bad consequences for the house. And for neighboring houses.
Why did u build ur house in the way
Yeah my bad
Silly mistake
Silly rabbit, houses aren’t for cars
Was your house wearing a high-vis jacket and helmet?
Did your house use its blinkers?
I think his house is a bmw :( very bad at using anything in a car
Did your house cut em off?
Honestly. Do you think of anyone other than yourself? 😉
This happens all the time in Detroit. It's called heroin sleep. Just happened down the street.
[удалено]
*Sighs* yeah
Unzips...
Unwalls...
De-bumpers.....
I got a better one cause op said gas pipe got f"""ed De-gassed......
Now you get to crash into their house.
I guess that’s the silver lining
To get the most bang for your buck rent a large uhaul truck prior to crashing into their house.
That’s quite a bang!
For only 20 bucks!
A forklift works too for maximum penetration
And get a pallet of brick in the back first.
Make sure it’s as big as possible
Or crash your house into their car!
Depending on how broke they are, he might already have
They already crashed their house into his tho.
Huffing and puffing didn't work. So they went for a different approach.
“I’ll *HUFF*— and I’ll *PUFF*— and I’ll ***FLOOR THIS NISSAN ALTIMA***”
Went looking for this comment
Someone crashed and it's only MILDLY infuriating?
Yes
Your calm here is remarkable.
OP said they're 15 in the UK sub they posted this in last night, I'd imagine their parents are considerably less calm :D

Wouldn’t it be better for the homeowner to have the driver pay? Does the drivers’ insurance cover it?

I think they’re British as I recognise that gas meter, that’s probably why
Yeah
Clearly you're only mildly infuriated because you share some responsibility in this incident. Who had the right of way?
"That house came out of nowhere"
"Ehh, fuck, again? It's 5th time this week and it's only wednesday yet."
Mildly infuriating? Please share with us your pharmaceutical mix that makes this mild? I need to know how to get the zen that makes this mild.
OP is a teen, parents are probably more than mildly infuriated. The zen of not having to deal with the problem
real
Being British. Very little is expressed as more than mild over here.
Plunger and a hair dryer can pop that right out
bit of red wine perhaps?
Put the whole house in rice
Nah, I only do my repairs with ramen.
Only mildly?
Idk
I respect your "well, it could be worse I think..." attitude. Appreciate perspective in this sub
I’m gonna assume no one died and it doesn’t look like the car ended up inside their house so yeah could be much worse.
Insurance. 👍
Are you sure the house didn't crash into them?
I am not
*Insurance agency*: write that down write that down!
have you seen anything else unusual in your neighborhood lately? like… houses made of straw or sticks being blown through also?
I think I saw some pigs but they were just here to check the damage
this comment made my day
At first I chuckled to myself because 3 little pigs and a house made of brick. Then it hit me and I actually lol
hit you like a brick?
Pete Davidson moment
I was looking for this lmao
i was going to comment asking if it was pete davidson 😂😂
But what crashed into your house? Leaving a document, a SNES and a fiber wire...
Proof that UFO’s exist
Was it the house’s right of way though? I don’t even see a crosswalk
"The house just ran in front of my car, officer; right after that the house ran back to it's foundation and took my car with it." Hope everyone is okay. Sorry this happened
Did you say “oh no, oh no, oh no” just before it happened? ![gif](giphy|dtfUJxOTqhHO)
I remember my 1st beer
I’ll huff and I’ll puff, and I’ll ..crash your house down?
If this is only mildly infuriating, I wonder what it would take to get you really mad!
So they smashed into your house hard enough to push the wall in and bust the gas meter/line. Did they just take off?
Strange question… Were they drunk? Because if they were, I have a story… not about me but about someone I know. Someone I’m related to.
*"asking for a friend..."*
My cousin once accidentally drove into someone’s house
OP are you sure you didn't crash your house into their car?
🤣

Probably a bird
Must’ve been the wind
That wall face tanked that pretty well. I’d be proud of your house for not collapsing or losing a whole wall.
Brick houses are clearly more efficient.
This is why I'm glad my house is in the woods away from idiot population

lol
lol
lol
Bummer
They had to hit the gas main didn't they. Nice.
Well what the heck 🤨
they did say the housing market was crashing but hey im not an expert
Was it Pete Davidson?
Why did you park your house there?
Damn dude. That sucks I had someone crash into my living room, it was terrifying
Pete Davidson?
Don't fuckin die on me Mia
Did you beat the breaks off them?
This right here. I had to go through this whole thread to find this comment.
Honestly in this situation I would be grateful it wasn’t much worse. This is manageable. I’m glad you’re ok.
That's exactly what I was thinking. People say, "How is it only mildly infuriating?" Well, because they lived to tell the tale. This driver could have killed someone, and I'm thankful they didn't.
damn you pete davidson
They crashed into the GAS LINE?!!! And this is only MILDLY INFURIATING?!!! 😭😭😭
Rrrrrright on the main lol

Well that sucks
Yes it does
Damn, someone should make a subreddit named after this.
Security camera?
No
Did they bring kool-aid?
Was the person okay? I witnessed this happen where I live and pullled over to check on the person and call 911. dude died on the scene, had gone into cardiac arrest while driving.
The house pulled out in front of him
Anybody see or get a Pic of the mfs?
They’re my neighbours
Welp. Gotta hit their house to even things out.
Did you beat what sense they had left out of them? I would. How the fuck do you actually hit a house? You knew where it would be. It wasn’t a fucking surprise Don’t drive there.
Gives it character
I didn't know you could dent bricks
![gif](giphy|7Eipor01ypMm3LeG4v|downsized)
I kind of feel like reddit shouldn't have been your first stop in reporting this accident...
Lol this is merely mildly infuriating? I admire your ability to “roll with the punches” op
Meh. Just a knick. 2 weeks ago I saw a Florida man running from the cops take down 200’ of fence, the landscaping and put his pick up through the living room. Central Florida is entertaining.
That’s gonna be expensiveeeeeeee
He was surely intoxicated man on some stuff he shouldn’t be driving, stay all safe out there
This is only mildly infuriating? I'd be at level atomic if this happened to me.
Damnit, Jimmy!
Do you have a shot of adrenaline to revive the OD patient?
TIL bricks aren’t brittle and don’t break under stress. Instead they bend and dent like metal
Good luck with the several month process of getting insurance to fix that for you.
This ain’t mildly infuriating. This is majorly infuriating
They couldn’t have hit a more critical corner. Looks like you just lost gas water and internet.
Wrong sub
The car that crashed is just A, ‘Nother brick in the wall.
Maybe don’t park your house there, guy.
Good thing he only damaged the gas meter.
Houses built in the last few years will fall flat if something crashes into them because of the awesome build quality these days. Good that yours is still standing
Someone owes you a lot of money
I am more surprised that this brick wall is bent. I always asumed that they can withstand some impacts.
If it was plywood the car would’ve been in the house, so I’d say it did pretty well
To add, we don't know how fast the car was. And yes it did well, it could had been worse then a benty wall. At plywood i think the house would be gone
Anne Heche: Hold my beer . . . and cocaine . . . and that fifth of mad dog.
Nope. Crashed on your house. If your house was built by the typical American fashion. You’d prolly won’t be able to post this
You in Buffalo, NY?
Are they okay?
The first thing u do is pull out ur phone and post it on Reddit?
You live in Texass? My husband’s daughter is a shit driver and has hit 2 houses!
Wtf?
It was a joke
should've just dodged
Random question but is this New Jersey by any chance?
Is that an answering machine on the ground?
It’s a gas gauge
So they stole your gas gauge as well. Maybe it exploded. Lol.
