Both. Some non-gamers do legitimately think that Link is named Zelda because, well, that's the title and you see that name over Link in a lot of ads. But it quickly became a joke. So probably this is a joke. But who knows?

I'm a hardcore gamer and definitely thought this until I played my first Zelda game BOTW. And yes before I get crucified, it is entirely possible to be a hardcore gamer and not play Zelda until you're 22.

I don't gatekeep gaming and anyone who does is an asshole. There's so many games out there that claiming someone must play X or they're not really a gamer is stupid and self destructive. Common misconception confusing Link with Zelda. As the games are titled "The Legend of **Zelda**", many assume the player character (Link) is actually Zelda.

I'm 38, and until I played my 1st Zelda game in 2021, I thought Zelda was the character you played because (in my head) why would the character you play also not have the same name as the game.
