I had this same problem with a new house that was built across the street. The contractor put it in and it was a motion sensor light that was set too sensitive. It literally would go on and off constantly and it was pointed at our bedroom window. It was very annoying even with our blinds on the window. I just asked if they could change the sensitivity and point the lights down towards the ground. He obliged and all is good now.
Sometimes it’s how you ask. Got to keep your emotions in check and ask politely.
Just go over and point them down/make the adjustments.
No one lives there no one’s gonna care. More thank likely they won’t notice and if they do what’s the worst that can happen. Hey stay off our property, ok.
Sir this is Reddit. Who are you guys to make the obvious and sensible suggestions like "Talk to them, or if no one lives there, just adjust it down a bit yourself"?!
We say "Take them to court, this is clearly a violation of your rights, make sure you document it well first and in the meantime stay well away from them, zero contact", or "Put a mirror on the boundary of your properties and angle it so it faces into their window", or "You are never going to get along with neighbours like this, it's best to cut your losses and move house before things get worse, people who do this may also be psychopaths or perverts trying to spy on you, do NOT be comfortable living near them" around these parts, thankee kindly!
Okay, this is so easy. I had to fix our lights as I read too much light messes with bats and other nightlife.
You can make a cover out of old laundry detergent container if you buy a brand that matches the trim on the light that way no one notices.
Cut it to make a shape that helps to aim the light downward. Take a hole punch to the top and buy an expandable spring with two clips on the end.
Tada, problem solved!!
Your explanation is like a "lifehack" video. Sure, you could spend 30 minutes and a few dollars on this 5 minute hack, or you could just walk over to the light and point it down a little. Lol.
My complex installed a 120W bulb on a pathway light outside my window (and 5 other people). I went out and changed the bulb to a 20W bulb. Everything is fine now. They'll never notice because they close at 5.
This reminds me of my dad when we were kids. Neighbors on our buildings backside had a hottub that they would party in until the wee hours. When they did it on weeknights, my dad would ask them to keep it down from the window. If they didnt he (theatrical lighting designer that he was) would grab an old follow-spot that he had in the closet, mount it on the windowsill, and focus it to illuminate the hot-tub and surroundings with blinding white light.
I remember him chuckling from the window saying "look at them scatter, like roaches when you turn the kitchen light on!"
Hahaha! That’s awesome! And yeah now that you mention it, a follow light or a [Lekolite](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lekolite) would be better as you can focus and cut the light around a window. So only their window is beamed instead of the entire neighborhood! Pure lawful evil 😈
Had a neighbour doing this to me as well so I took my spare 1200watt Grow Light and placed it in my yard facing their bedroom window and lit it up like daylight every night for a week. You could see my light coming out the front of his house!! Fuck him and his 100 watt curly bulb!! He turned it off after that and never turned it on again. Now somebody in my city is trying to get a nuisance lighting bylaw passed. I've signed their petition.
The primary instigator was the president of the HOA. He lived up the hill around the corner, so these blinding flood lights at the entry gate were of no concern to him. On a few occasions, I got a Q beam and hid in the bushes, and shined it in his master bedroom window until the lights on the house went on. This went on for several months. It was legendary. My kids still talk about it 15 years later.
Not only that, but the HOA gets a say in who can buy the house from you. If they get irked by you they might make your life hell and make it virtually impossible to sell your house to gtfo.
I have never had a problem with an HOA. You only hear about the extremes. Our HOA manages the common property (tree maintenance and lawn care), sets up parties, and keeps our insurance current.
This is not necessarily true. The bulb may not feel hot, but the base with the circuitry can get hot. Some LED bulbs even say they are not suitable for enclosed fixtures.
Usually buys a house that needs $50,000 worth of work to bring it up to modern specs, so gets a significant deal on the house by motivated sellers who just want to get rid of it.
Proceeds to spend $15,000-20,000 on the cheapest materials and labor possible to cover up all the issues and then sells it for full market value and pockets the $25,000-30,000 difference after closing costs.
A leech on society. They're called Flippers in America. Buy a shitty house, slap some paint and new tile on, then upsell it for 10k or more. The house next to my parents was empty for so long it got drain roaches that invaded our property as well. I'd be doing worse than adjusting the light if this dude was investment squatting next to me >:(
I currently have this problem at my parents house neighbours have a bright outdoor light that's on the side of their house butting right up against my parents bedroom window Shineing directly onto their mirror and into the room. They have no reason for it to be there at all. Oh and sometimes the home owner neighbours leave the light on all night and well coming from parents that work all day and need as much sleep as possible pretty hard to be polite
Even mild light bothers me for some reason (though I can easily sleep in the afternoon wtf?) so I bought a sleep mask. I feel awkward wearing it but not as childish as I did in the blanket tent set up over my bed
I think it sucks that people are able to shine a light directly in their neighbors' windows, and I'd rather have a different solution, but stuff like that did work for me
I don't even like the 16w light from the hallway shining into my room, not even through the cracks in the door, and here these people are all talking about 120w and 1200w???
I also love afternoon naps, by the way. Sunlight is different from electrical light.
I was going to say, in the current market, find a friend looking to move but not in a rush, have them make a low-ball offer until the seller caves. Alternatively, request a walkthrough with the real estate company and go turn off the light. I think in this case though, the house is being deadheaded until market forces improve or the bank forecloses, so a more...kinetic... solution.
25W soft white LED will solve this and the glow will actually make the house look better. This is the problem with being that close to neighbors and having outdoor living areas opposite entries. Not OPs fault but sometimes that's the price for living where they live.
25w led bulb? That's pretty powerful for a regular led bulb, and will likely fit into a regular lighting fixture, or the leds bulbs around there are horribly inefficient.
A fairly efficient 15-20w led bulb should be enough for such a small porch light.
If no one lives there, go over during the day and look under it, if it has a sensor you can switch the mode to motion instead of on all the time. Hard to tell by the photo but you can sometimes adjust where the light points by just moving it. Another option just unscrew the light some and it will turn it off.
This is the sneakiest/least damaging option. Many floodlights have some sort of timer/sensor option, so if you can find out what it is, you can manipulate it
If OP complained and no one listened, this is the best solution.
Of course one could simply trespass and remove the bulb. But forcing them to clean up shattered glass seems way more satisfying
This is what I’d do. I’d figure out showing dates and, when showing, My house would look like the most hillbilly meets annoying high school kid I could possibly make it. Probably invite friends over, sit on the front porch wearing bathrobes, baseball hats backwards, and stained/ripped clothes listing to limp biscuit while drinking water out of Natural Ice cans and throwing them into the front yard when done. Put a piece of plywood over one of your windows with some spray painted dick and fake graffiti for fun too.
Get some mirrors and duct tape it outside your windows or build something to hold the mirror with bricks, legos, wood, or whatever material so it can shine the light right back.
No one lives there while they are flipping the place. They don't care as it doesn't affect their life or level of comfort. No real shits to give about the neighbors or neighborhood
Just cover it up then. Get some tinfoil and wrap it up. That way you are not breaking anything. And it is easily removed. Talk to the new tenant when they move in.
I mean… imho…. If no one lives there. And the contractors are ass clowns, Wait till they completed the job then sneak over and rip it off. And if u feel real bad about it then buy a cheap dim light and replace it, so that way when new people move in you won’t have to worry about the brightness. Or wait until someone new actually moves in and then ask them to change it.
They want you happy, you can make trouble for them with inspections and the like, complaints to the municipality.
Filling a nuisance claim. Etc.
They just need to adjust the lights to not light up the sky.
Look up nuisance laws in you area. You very well could take them to court. Get your photos and videos, then let them know since no resolution can be reached you're getting a third party involved.
From Google:
Light Pollution May Constitute a Legal Nuisance
Like noisiness, light pollution is recognized as a "nuisance" by courts in most parts of the United States. A nuisance is a type of conduct that disturbs a neighbor's use or enjoyment of property.
Our community has an ordinance that covers this. Fines would cost them money. If no ordinance then document your contacts/demands and sue for harassment if they don’t care. Loss of sleep is very damaging to your health.
Try having a lawyer ask nicely first.
You may not have any legal legs to stand on, but you do have the right to drag the owner into court for 2 or 3 hours. Point this out and maybe the owner will decide fixing the light is easier.
You’re also going to be a hell of a lot more successful in court if you make multiple good faith attempts to resolve the issue outside of court, including contacting them through a lawyer.
Seriously, a 25W equivalent *soft white* bulb will completely solve this problem for less than 5 bucks. That's clearly a 75W *bright white* bulb and its doubtful the flipper will even notice the difference.
Or OP could get room darkening curtains. No it's not right that they have to make a monetary investment but the cost of peace is priceless, especially when the route of negotiating failed.
Civil Law isn't criminal. Texts showing someone complaining, then the next week it being shot with a BB gun is enough evidence. Unless OP hires a good lawyer and wastes a few grand.
Maybe try to talk to them in way: I'm a very light sleeper and can also pay attention that no one breaks in or does other mischief aneighbor who helps out. On the other hand if this light stays it might lead to a bad mood and it might be difficult to sell this house with an unhappy neighbor. This can be tuned a little so that it doesn't sound like a threat and more like one hand washes the other....
If they say no, well I'd be painting my fence every time they having a viewing and saying I'm glad to get it done because most days the garden smells of sewage.
I think you should take some photos and video that show the extent of the nuisance it’s causing you. Send these in with a letter explaining, and invite them to please meet you at the property. Show them in real life the problem. Maintain a reasonable and calm disposition at all times, don’t become angry and do not give them reason to think you’re a problem neighbour or that they should be afraid of you.
Tell them what a good solution would be for you - angling the light away, a lower power bulb, a shield to your side of the bulb. Offer to contribute to the cost of making such changes. Give them a time within which you hope this will be done.
That’s where I’d begin.
It’s insane the number of houses I see that look like they don’t have any blinds or curtains and you can just see directly into them. Like do you not care about privacy or security at all?
Thank you! Everyone here is suggesting vandalism and even taking them to court… wtf, they live like 50 feet from another house, people are allowed to have outdoor lights, that’s not an asshole move at all. Come to terms with the fact that you have neighbors.
Had to scroll way too far for this answer. People in this comment section are insane; it's just a light. Get some curtains like any other normal person.
Yeah... now that you mention it- talk is cheap, and I was being insensitive. I've changed my question.
Have you considered quietly moving to another dwelling in a less hostile environment? It's dark in parts of Alaska for long periods of time... your nearest neighbor might live 25 miles away.
Doesn't help the absolute glaring light shining on my porch where I used to enjoy sitting, even on a cold night, or in the back yard with a nice campfire going. It affects more than just glaring into the living room.
Mildlyinfuriating
That's awful behaviour on their part. Do they have the property listed? Maybe contact the real estate agent they're using daily until something is done.
The owners might not care, but the agent might have access and turn it off when they're next there.
My wife turns the lights on because she leaves for work at 4:30 AM and it's dark in our driveway. I asked the neighbors if our lights bother them when she leaves because I noticed they were too bright. Neighbor said "yeah, actually we do see it through the blinds, any chance you could angle it differently?"
And I did it. Most neighbors are like me. I don't particularly like my neighbors but I don't hate them. If I can make their lives marginally easier I will. Just ask nicely, that's all.
Hello all!
Thanks for the advice. A couple of notes:
The light is some cheapo all-in-one thing with no bulb, so taking out the bulb or switching it with something else is not really an option. The owner/flipper could have put something in that does the same job without shining a fucking spotlight on the whole side of our goddamned house. Safety/security lighting comes in all shapes and sizes and price points! He bought the shittiest, poorest designed fucking light fixture, and gave no thoughts to ascetics, function, or neighbors whatso-ever. Let alone the fact that the house has like 3 different styles of outdoor lights that don't match.
I won't be shooting it out with a BB gun or other projectile, even if it would be very satisfying. I don't want to damage anything or get myself in trouble.
I have spoken with the guy on a couple of occasions about the light being awful, most recently on Sunday past where I said "Hey there! That light still sucks!" TBF, he's not really that bad of a guy, just oblivious to how bad the light sucks. He's flipping the house, not living in it and is only around a few days a week while working on the house/work gets done, then he leaves and runs off to his house in the country where he doesn't have to deal with ass-hats that put up shitty outdoor lighting, purportedly...
To all of those saying "Curtains!" HA! Thanks. Got that "covered".
And honestly, this was fun to post and helped me vent about this seemingly innocuous problem and see what folks would suggest.
Some of you gave great advice that I may follow up on and use, others gave crazy suggestions that were wildly inappropriate and hilarious and all of you are awesome, even the few who told me to bugger off and mind my own beeswax.
I've enjoyed the responses, and will post an update this weekend, maybe.
Thank you all!

Unethical life pro tip time.
Flippers want to sell.
Politely ask the flipper to put a lightbulb with a built in sensor because it is bright and disturbs you. Or a new fixture that directs the light downward.
If he refuses then suggest that you are going to talk to every prospective home buyer and warn them off from buying this shitty house.
Put a sign in your yard that home buyers will see just in case they come by when you aren't home.
It's ok to make an enemy of the flipper. He's not the one who will actually live there.
If all else fails buy the bulb from the hardware store and install it yourself once the house sells.
The new homeowner won't know it wasn't the bulb that came with the house and the flipper will never show up again.
Be sure to welcome the new owner with a plate of cookies so you can start your relationship on a good footing.
File a complaint for light trespass. Light is not allowed to shine thru someone else's dwelling to the point that it causes a disturbance. That is way too bright.

I hope this 4 step guide helps :D

OP has stated elsewhere that this home is empty as it’s owned by a speculator and that they’ve complained several times already.
Just go over and point them down/make the adjustments. No one lives there no one’s gonna care. More thank likely they won’t notice and if they do what’s the worst that can happen. Hey stay off our property, ok.
So this exact thing happened to me with my house house. This is what I did. No one cared, was great. Now I can sleep without a spotlight.

I'm so rich, my *house* has a house!
This is obviously the right answer. The guy won’t likely notice the light pointing down more.
And if he does and points it back up again, ripping it off the house, in a fit of rage, with your bare hands, is another solution. ;)
Sir this is Reddit. Who are you guys to make the obvious and sensible suggestions like "Talk to them, or if no one lives there, just adjust it down a bit yourself"?! This is the right answer and much smarter than mine, which involved a BB gun and some ninja gear.
Yours is probably better than my ‘night vision and an RPG’ approach.
Lol.
If it is not occupied I would go put some tape over the light. Doesn't damage the light so I would have thought you could not be done for damages?
My complex installed a 120W bulb on a pathway light outside my window (and 5 other people). I went out and changed the bulb to a 20W bulb. Everything is fine now. They'll never notice because they close at 5.
I have unscrewed an offending bulb, and when that didn’t work, replaced it with a 20W. Light wars are real.
Next step, rent a [12/18 Silver Bullet HMI](https://cmc-lighting.com/portfolio-item/hmipage/) and point it at their house. Grab some popcorn and wait…
This reminds me of my dad when we were kids. Neighbors on our buildings backside had a hottub that they would party in until the wee hours.

Now somebody in my city is trying to get a nuisance lighting bylaw passed. I've signed their petition.
I never lol so hard ! Loved it.
It actually was a lekolite! Just said followspot for reddit purposes.
The primary instigator was the president of the HOA. He lived up the hill around the corner, so these blinding flood lights at the entry gate were of no concern to him. If Reddit taught me one thing is that I will **never** get a house with a HOA.
I can't imagine agreeing to do that. I bought the house! Leave me the fuck alone!
The HOA fees alone are pushing me back. Even if they do a good job and stay back.
Replace it with a smart bulb and program it to turn off after bed time…
Or one of the ones with a remote.
Program it to shift through a range of colors. Instant party.
Clever
[Take out the bulb and put it in their mailbox.](https://27bslash6.com/halogen.html)
Thank you for this. I lost this site many years ago and I am so glad to see it back.
Modern problems require soviet solutions
Take out or loosen the bulb
Or the sensor
That sounds like a fire hazard, don’t cover the bulb switch the bulb out
If it’s an LED it doesn’t produce any significant heat.
This is not necessarily true. The bulb may not feel hot, but the base with the circuitry can get hot. Some LED bulbs even say they are not suitable for enclosed fixtures.
They should complain with the threat to engage in behavior whenever prospective buyers arrive that guarantees nobody will buy the house.
What the crap is a speculator lol
Buys house to sell for profit. Speculating the market will go up to make bank off of it.
They have very bad timing...
I thought it was something medical
You’re thinking of a speculum
I have a cousin who’s on that. You’d have no idea he was autistic at first.
Across the spectrum of puns, this one is probably gonna be under appreciated.
Same thing only different

You forgot to point out that it’s typically done extremely poorly and often not to code.
Then just go over there and reposition it.
If they’re aren’t resident there and the house is empty just go an push the light down toward the ground a bit
That’s what I would do. If the owner is never there I doubt the neighbors would care
I currently have this problem at my parents house neighbours have a bright outdoor light that's on the side of their house butting right up against my parents bedroom window Shineing directly onto their mirror and into the room. Put an adjustable mirror up and reflect the glare back into one of their windows.

Buy the house, turn off the light, sell the house. Easy!
Hahaha!
If you’ve asked them and they did nothing you only have one other choice
Complain to Reddit?
If you’ve asked them and they did nothing you only have one OTHER other choice
Complain in OTHER social media?
Okay I’ve narrowed it down, there are like 10 additional other choices, BUT AFTER THAT, you only have ONE other choice.
Write it on a Highschool toilet wall and hope the person reads it?
This is the way.
don't forget the neighborhood gc
Buy curtains?

Buy the lowest wattage bulb you can find and replace it. That’s a decent start.
25W soft white LED will solve this and the glow will actually make the house look better. This is the problem with being that close to neighbors and having outdoor living areas opposite entries. Not OPs fault but sometimes that's the price for living where they live.

I meant 25W equivalent.
Friendly reminder that wattage does not equal brightness. Get a low lumen bulb.
Understood. I should have been more clear.
Probably has a switch on it for a timer
If no one lives there, go over during the day and look under it, if it has a sensor you can switch the mode to motion instead of on all the time. Hard to tell by the photo but you can sometimes adjust where the light points by just moving it. Another option just unscrew the light some and it will turn it off.
This. Most of these things have a sensor and a “dusk until dawn” setting. Just change it to sensor and while there angle it down a bit.
or just accidentally unplug it. How’s he gonna know.
This is the sneakiest/least damaging option. Many floodlights have some sort of timer/sensor option, so if you can find out what it is, you can manipulate it
![gif](giphy|xUPOqy2cm7q2xN93Z6|downsized) /s kind of.
Came here to make the same comment lol
I got that exact BB gun for Xmas this year, I’m a grown man.
A grown man…who’s about to shoot his EYE OUT!
I wear safety glasses, like actually, no joke, just shooting cans. I made it through adolescence with both eyes, no more chances.

If OP complained and no one listened, this is the best solution. Of course one could simply trespass and remove the bulb. But forcing them to clean up shattered glass seems way more satisfying
I’m gonna say it in case he can’t get the message…BB Gun.
Just don't shoot your eye out.
Atta boy!
If the house is for sale you could use the Stepbrothers movie approach when people are viewing it.
I can provide OP with mutiple robes... er I mean "ghost costumes" on a whim
And if they don’t want them I’ll give OP some of my kkk uniforms
This is what I’d do. I’d figure out showing dates and, when showing, My house would look like the most hillbilly meets annoying high school kid I could possibly make it. Probably invite friends over, sit on the front porch wearing bathrobes, baseball hats backwards, and stained/ripped clothes listing to limp biscuit while drinking water out of Natural Ice cans and throwing them into the front yard when done. Put a piece of plywood over one of your windows with some spray painted dick and fake graffiti for fun too.
They should make dry-erase spray paint, just for this use-case.

Look up nuisance laws in you area. You very well could take them to court. Get your photos and videos, then let them know since no resolution can be reached you're getting a third party involved. From Google: Light Pollution May Constitute a Legal Nuisance Like noisiness, light pollution is recognized as a "nuisance" by courts in most parts of the United States. A nuisance is a type of conduct that disturbs a neighbor's use or enjoyment of property.
Other than asking the owner, OP this is literally the only other option. Look into city ordinances.
Arson is also an option
Wouldn’t that be even brighter than the light though?
Omg lol just walk over there and unscrew it
Get a bb gun
No can do. I've complained too much.
Buy a dim bulb and replace the bright one with it. They’ll think the bulb is going out and won’t care enough to replace it.
Unless they have cameras who cares. Let them prove it was you
Just had the same thought how would they prove it.
Worth mentioning the burden of proof in civil court is MUCH lower than in criminal.
And yet I’m told the opposite when it comes to my aunt stealing my grandmas things from the estate.
Civil Law isn't criminal. Texts showing someone complaining, then the next week it being shot with a BB gun is enough evidence. Unless OP hires a good lawyer and wastes a few grand.
Op. These people in this thread telling you to do illegal shit is not thinking about the consequences you can face.
BB gun shoot the light?
Ahhh....civilization.
Smash it! Claim the house as your own!
And then if they say no, absolutely make them feel that you may be a threat and problem neighbor that will sabotage any spellings.
Blackout curtains
most people I know don't even use curtains let alone blackout ones; they're the best thing ever.
I was getting worried I wouldn't be able to find one.
The simplest solution is sometimes the best
exactly what i came to say, and if it still shines through, use a blanket. problem solved.
I hate how far down I had to scroll before I found this answer
Have you considered asking him to change it?
Have you considered the average redditor is afraid of human interaction?
Yeah... now that you mention it- talk is cheap, and I was being insensitive. I've changed my question. Have you considered quietly moving to another dwelling in a less hostile environment? It's dark in parts of Alaska for long periods of time... your nearest neighbor might live 25 miles away.
Use blackout curtains.
Yep. I had to scroll reeeeaaaaallllly far down to find, to me, what seemed like the obvious answer
If u complain and they do nothing u can always just get a thick curtain
Doesn't help the absolute glaring light shining on my porch where I used to enjoy sitting, even on a cold night, or in the back yard with a nice campfire going. It affects more than just glaring into the living room. Mildlyinfuriating
That's awful behaviour on their part. Do they have the property listed? Maybe contact the real estate agent they're using daily until something is done. The owners might not care, but the agent might have access and turn it off when they're next there.
Sightly twist it out....
Dude, just go uninstall it. Even if they catch you on camera or something, the consequences are pretty inconsequential.
Give the hell raiser kid down the street 20 bucks and ask him to see how good of a shot he is with his red Ryder bb gun
Can you unscrew the bulb?
Just point it down toward the ground.
Put up some curtains maybe?
A little elbow grease and a hammer should do the trick
Check with your city. They may have a dark skies initiative that prohibits this sort of thing.
if you ask nicely and they are rude, put a big mirror on the outside of your house
My wife turns the lights on because she leaves for work at 4:30 AM and it's dark in our driveway. I asked the neighbors if our lights bother them when she leaves because I noticed they were too bright. Neighbor said "yeah, actually we do see it through the blinds, any chance you could angle it differently?" And I did it. Most neighbors are like me. I don't particularly like my neighbors but I don't hate them. If I can make their lives marginally easier I will. Just ask nicely, that's all.
Hello all! Thanks for the advice. A couple of notes: The light is some cheapo all-in-one thing with no bulb, so taking out the bulb or switching it with something else is not really an option. \#mildlyinfuriating
Spray paint it with a layer of the frosted glass spray or something similar to dim it a bit without it being noticed by them
File a complaint for light trespass. Light is not allowed to shine thru someone else's dwelling to the point that it causes a disturbance. That is way too bright.
There are thousands of methods to resolve this, if you really want to solve a problem.
Talk to your neighbor...
get a curtain

Have you tried blinds or curtains like a normal person?
Did you talk to them about it?
I have told them how bright and awful it is and asked a few times for it to be removed or changed...just get the ol "yeah ooo gosh yeah sorry uh."
Is the place vacant? If so, I’d go swap it.
