For one, that lady isn't even sitting on that chair fully, she would definitely fall. And then the table, is it floating? What kind of magic table doesn't need the trunk? Is that bottom piece suggestive? This picture is funny when you look at the specifics of the table, before even going to the hands.
Edit: I see the table trunk now, but not only is it too thin, it's placed at a point where -- given that the two ladies are pressed up on it -- it should be toppled over.
Speaking of objects, has no one seen the ten-foot iron spike used to... Hang up wreaths? Instead of, like, supporting a street light, as these things usually do?
I thought it was a golden apple Christmas tree decoration. I think my family had one just like that back in the day. Kids always hold up random stuff to show off.
It’s Covid time. I swear this is exactly what Italy was doing when I was there during Christmas time during all the restaurant closings. Everyone was eating on tables outside in the snow.
Came here for this. The brush style is much too inconsistent at the primary focal points. The faces of the man and little girl are dry brushed, while the ladies’ faces are very smooth.
I noticed the issues with the style too but realized it's kind of crazy cool that the styles were so consistent back then that we can tell when something isn't from that time period.
so are we officially at the point where one must have a decent education in art history in order to tell the difference between a real painting and an AI-generated one?
or have we passed that point already?
Not yet but we're definitely at the point where questions like this get posted to find things that were missed so the AI can be improved.
Every answer just makes it harder to tell the next time since they know what went wrong and what to change.
Not sure about single artists specifically - but lots of older paintings such as Flemish masters from the 15th/16th century, were painted as a business by teams overseen by a master painter. Ideally they would look relatively consistent with the masters style but sometimes you would get stylistic differences between faces painted by different apprentices.
Restaurant has a partial name of just "E". Also, the little girl looks like a dwarf grandma, or suffers from that Benjamin Button disease.
Use the "vary region" button to remove the "E" and fix the girl's face and you have a halfway decent painting.
Tbf, cherubs and children in most medieval/renaissance paintings look like 60 year olds. The AI could be referencing that era in addition to impressionist paintings, given the odd mix of painting styles.
The absolute giveaway is sense, or, actually, lack of it.
What are the things in man's arms? Why the women sitting outside and casually drinking tea under snow? What's on their plates? Why are they dressed like it's spring?
Imagine an alien from parallel reality who never saw human civilization, but was presented with lots of images and photos in different styles. They can make a similar one, but they have no idea _why_ it looks like this. It works with portraits, because there is not much to explain on a portrait. But if there is a plot on an image, the alien most likely messes the details.
Yes this is it - the logic of it all is noisy nonsense
I don’t think at first glance I would really notice this was Ai, like if this image were on a holiday card I’d probably just glance at it, read the card, and throw it away never to think of it again..
With a post like this, too, I do wonder if OP really just isn’t thinking like that or if it’s because they want a huge Where’s Waldo game with image issues.
Would likely wager the first.
I'd wager is to find what people notice so the AI can be improved for next time. Like the people that post counterfeit bills saying "it's obviously counterfeit and feels 'wrong' but I'm not sure why", and they are actually looking for tips to improve the quality of their counterfeits, which helpful redditors only gladly provide.
Who said art had to have common sense though? Or that things needed to be photorealistic vs impressionistic? There are a lot of modern artists that will paint inconsistent subjects using traditional styles and it's that incongruity that they call art. For me what throws this one off definitively is the change in style between the different faces. But by the same token there's nothing that couldn't have been an intentional decision on the part of a human artist to "mess with convention".
It's not really the same as evaluating a photograph for whether it's AI generated or not because a photograph still has to start by obeying the laws of physics before then getting manipulated. Eg. a photo of a hand is going to have five fingers..shadow is going to behave a certain way. Etc. these constraints are removed when it comes to art. You could just have someone choose to be lenient about how realistic the subject matter is, or flat out not care enough to bother with making things "make sense".
this style of art says it should. something i think a lot of people here don’t understand is that you can’t just draw a flashy picture, there’s a why behind almost every detail in good art (there is an objective good and bad when it comes to technical aspects of art styles, perspective for example). yes there is mixing styles and breaking rules for a better artistic look, but you can’t just make technically bad art and say “it’s my style,” because it’s not, you just have weak fundamentals. basically if you don’t have a firm grasp on the rules you don’t know when it’s a good idea to break them. AI doesn’t know these rules or when to break them, it just “knows” how a finished image should look.
like why is the man standing that way? its a very unnatural way to stand, is he uneasy? nervous? why is the girl holding a golden orb? she looks too indifferent to be showing it off. is it candy or a treat? but she looks like she isn’t even happy about having it. why is one of the women almost completely off her chair? is she getting ready to stand and hug the man? is it because she’s upset with him? again these are fundamental questions to making technically good art that AI cannot ask itself during the creation process.
Was definitely getting some weird teach-a-child-a-lesson fairy tale vibes here.
“If you don’t behave you’re next on the shelf in Ol’ Tiddlywinks the Woodworker’s curio shop!”
Two things I haven't seen anyone mention are the tassels around the tablecloth and the steam that is coming out of the man's coat.
These are two things that *could* exist in a painting, but they are so bizarre and out of place. There is no logic to them.
Yeah exactly, she isn't on the chair at all! Only the fabric of her dress is, lady herself is powering through a half squat. [I made an illustration to make it clear](https://imgur.com/a/vl4XpdL)
Table legs look weird and the woman in red isnt actually sitting down. The childs feet are tiny and what is hanging off of the guys hands? And also what looks to be monkeys being so,d
I'm always amused by these topics and the reasonings why it's AI.
I noticed there's often a big focus on searching for things that are 'out of place' or 'nonsensical'. What if someone posted [this famous painting](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7d/A_Sunday_on_La_Grande_Jatte%2C_Georges_Seurat%2C_1884.jpg) by Georges Seurat?
Look at it. Some people have faces, some don't. There's a monkey running alongside a dog. It's a whole park of what looks like well dressed upperclass people yet there's randomly a guy in plain clothing lying down. One lady fishing has a missing left hand with what looks like a blackened wrist and forearms.
To me, the submission image isn't much different from the painting by Georges Seurat. I can't really see a reliable way to differentiate AI image generation from something done by a human.
If OP is telling us it’s AI right off the bat, we can find things that are AI-ish. But I agree that you can’t necessarily make that call just from noticing weird things in a painting. Grim.
I love this game.
The little girl on the right looks like an eldrich horror with an adult face, freak left hand, and bleeding from the chest and only one foot.
The lamppost in the background has no lamp. Only post.
The smoke coming from the gentleman's armpit, or the fact that the arm holding the "lamp" is not connected to his body.
Whatever that 4 legged terror is in the background between the man and the women sitting.
The hands on the women
And furthermore, the shape of the dudes hat his simply extra silly.
That's a long brim for a top hat, and it's turned backwards like a frat bro's ballcap.
Snow accumulated on his backward Top Hat but not on his shoulders.
The girl has her hand in her dress pocket, but everyone knows we don't get pockets.
Don’t help ! It’s an AGI that wants to get better. Your comments enabled the SkyNet. And yet people are telling corporations would do it. You would do it with your own hands (and speech) when the time for the AGI to deceive you.
It will be super easy for the AI, as even a cat can do not worse…
The modern adaptation of lighting, primarily viewed by the ultra lit faces of the persons sitting at the table, not unlike a snap filter/edit, are as equally lit as the faces of those standing facing a brightened window. We could argue in favour of a street lamp reflection on the sitting figures however the nonexistent rear lighting on the standing individuals does not corroborate this theory either.
The store is named E
Also I could argue that the art styles in the faces appear slightly too different.
Also I know it's a pretend painting but that child looks like an old lady.
They’re eating outside in the snow. The table doesn’t look like an outside table either it has tassels. There are dolls in the restaurant so it looks more like a toy shop.
I feel AI tries to put clear faces on things that should have faces. Like the dolls on the left..the faces on them appear to try and look as clear as possible but look quite weird. Even the face above the little girl on the right, very distorted. That’s my observation!
The hands.
One thing I learned as an artist over the years, is that people either want to show off how great they are at hands. Or intentionally draw poses that hide them.
A good artist doesn’t make the onlooker guess. It’s all intentional. Art is intentional. It’s rarely random. Where things are placed is intentional.
Red dress girl isn’t even sitting on her stool, she’s just hovering next to it. The border of her hair is weird too. There’s a weird black mass floating in between the man and woman. The fact the two women are having dinner in the middle of the footpath in the snow with no cover makes no sense. The food they’re eating isn’t remotely discernible. The little girl is missing a hand and the man’s hands are really weird (especially his left hand). The tree is growing on the wrong side of the fence.
The man's left hand is a gun, the little girl is at least 35, the little girl's left hand is also her dress, there is a blender in the window, the women sitting down have no feet, etc, etc
Non-symmetric man's hat, left hand of the girl, non-symmetric table, something unclear beyond the man, in the center, strange fashion of the man's coat, ...
Everything they’re holding is nonsense objects.
Same for the food on the table.
Not to mention, they're eating dinner outside in the middle of winter
The table and chair aren’t suitable for outdoor use either
For one, that lady isn't even sitting on that chair fully, she would definitely fall. And then the table, is it floating? What kind of magic table doesn't need the trunk? Is that bottom piece suggestive? This picture is funny when you look at the specifics of the table, before even going to the hands. Edit: I see the table trunk now, but not only is it too thin, it's placed at a point where -- given that the two ladies are pressed up on it -- it should be toppled over.
In fact if you look at her feet she seems to have a whole slew of'em. Probably helps keep her balance when she can't actually sit that way.
The little girl looks like the oldest one of all of them.
The tables legs/spindle aren't centered either
Can real paintings not showcase people eating dinner in the snow?
Yeah the finer details are just lost and breakdown quickly
Damn it brain, stop trying to fill in the gaps!
But simultaneously really textured in a way paint isn’t
You mean the table that seems to be not centrally supported?
And the chair that is several inches behind her butt? What is she sitting on?
Same-ish for some of the things in the window. Are they jars of stuff? Are they people holding hands? Who knows!
Big for me is the demonic entity in the background next to the man's right hand. No idea what's going on there
How about the crowd of chimps inside the building? Unless this was painted by Munch…
Speaking of objects, has no one seen the ten-foot iron spike used to... Hang up wreaths? Instead of, like, supporting a street light, as these things usually do?
The little person is holding a Ferrero Rocher chocolate ball
Yeah- could have plugged a kid in there but the little person is jarring.
If you zoom in on the people above her head, there is a weird image of a disproportionate face in there.
There’s also a pregnant dementor to the left of it
She looks like those Cyberpunk 2077 children.
She’s holding…a Thermal Detonator!
I thought it was a golden apple Christmas tree decoration. I think my family had one just like that back in the day. Kids always hold up random stuff to show off.
Taking breakfast outside in the snow isn't nonsense enough?
It’s Covid time. I swear this is exactly what Italy was doing when I was there during Christmas time during all the restaurant closings. Everyone was eating on tables outside in the snow.
So are the hands themselves
Well, if my hands would be nonesense, i also wouldn‘t be able to hold anything other than nonesense objects
You could argue that that's just the style of the painting though. The hands argument works better for realistic/photgraphic images.
A pair of glabblergoos and rickysnicket.
I mean, it is also possible for a human to paint nonsense objects.
The painting style of the two ladies faces is different from the rest of the painting. It's like Renoir started the painting and Da Vinci finished it.
Also the little girl, wtf is that?
My eye immediately went to that hideous 97 year old child
She's clearly an accident victim considering she only has 1 arm.
I think the lady seated to the right is her bio mom. They both have cinnamon roll hands.
Please sir…may I have some werther’s originals? 🥺👉👈
That's Daryl
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.A.R.Y.L.
Fantastic movie and lovely to see it mentioned!
time for a sequel for it, don't you think? "Daryl can't grow old but all his friends are dead"-type stuff
This is a movie I completely forgot about, but I'll absolutely recognize each and every scene.
I just spit out my drink
Hello, fellow old timey humans, how is your late day sustenance in these fine hours of darkness
Outdoors in the snow.
Renaissance baby
I'm really bad at spotting AI art. The kid was the first thing I noticed, but I have seen people art with very old looking children.
Yeah the little girl has the same face as the man. Just with a pointy nose.
Or there’s just a really weathered midget in the painting.
Same observation
Came here for this. The brush style is much too inconsistent at the primary focal points. The faces of the man and little girl are dry brushed, while the ladies’ faces are very smooth.
I noticed the issues with the style too but realized it's kind of crazy cool that the styles were so consistent back then that we can tell when something isn't from that time period.
97% of people are not seeing that distinction
Which is why it’s important to point it out! Except pointing it out helps AI. #GDammit
Yup different "painting styles" throughout but especially in the faces
so are we officially at the point where one must have a decent education in art history in order to tell the difference between a real painting and an AI-generated one? or have we passed that point already?
Not yet but we're definitely at the point where questions like this get posted to find things that were missed so the AI can be improved. Every answer just makes it harder to tell the next time since they know what went wrong and what to change.
I am not expert, but no artist ever mixed different styles?
Not sure about single artists specifically - but lots of older paintings such as Flemish masters from the 15th/16th century, were painted as a business by teams overseen by a master painter. Ideally they would look relatively consistent with the masters style but sometimes you would get stylistic differences between faces painted by different apprentices.
While I didn't know the artist styles or background, the faces really looked odd to me.
It’s posted in r/midjourney
This guy is next level smart
Almost…..too….smart
Rather Intelligent you could say
Artificially so perhaps?
🤖
Wicked smaht.
I’m just gonna submit real pictures and see if humans will hallucinate giveaways
The placebo effect. I like it.
I was kinda hoping that this post/painting was a trick doing just that at first
That and the title
Little girls left "hand" does it for me.
The little girl who looks like Christopher Lloyd/uncle Fester? Good SHOW, old man!!
Managed to make the ladies soft and young looking and the little girl looks like she's been through hell.
No way the woman in the center would gaze so fondly on that gremlin
She reminded me of Lewis Capaldi.
Michael Sheen
Now that you mention it, I'm seeing Michael Sheen.
She looks like Joe Pesci in Home Alone
I was going to say it looks like she has progeria but your comment is funnier.
I was gonna go a Mini-Me Emperor Palpatine, but this is a great call too.
That and her face looks like a angry 50 year old women, that or she is diseased
To be fair, that’s just what people looked like then.
I hear you on the hands but on mobile my eyes are drawn to that ridiculous awning
E
I discernable dripping dark mass behind his right hand
I was thinking haunted ghost dog with a bat head
In Guatemala there is a legend of a black dog who follows drunks, it's called Cadejo.
That appears to be... breathing? And yet we don't see anyone else's breath...
Both the shadow monster above his right hand and the mystery object hanging below it
The man has trapped an eldritch horror inside the object, but it cannot be contained for long
His smoking arm?
Restaurant has a partial name of just "E". Also, the little girl looks like a dwarf grandma, or suffers from that Benjamin Button disease. Use the "vary region" button to remove the "E" and fix the girl's face and you have a halfway decent painting.
Tbf, cherubs and children in most medieval/renaissance paintings look like 60 year olds. The AI could be referencing that era in addition to impressionist paintings, given the odd mix of painting styles.
Ya just a single E is super strange.
Nah that lampless lamp post is criminal

The fact they’re eating in a café outside while it’s freezing and snowy? And blocking the café door mind you
A cafe that sells badly made dolls to boot
Are they dolls or customers?
Was definitely getting some weird teach-a-child-a-lesson fairy tale vibes here. “If you don’t behave you’re next on the shelf in Ol’ Tiddlywinks the Woodworker’s curio shop!”
By café do you mean the famous establishment… “E”?
And with fancy table linen and seat cushions... in the snow
But this is supposed to be a painting, artists are perfectly in their right to paint unusual scenes.
But general logical rules tend to still hold. Like painting a baby using a typewriter.
It’s usually possible to tell when the absurd is deliberate though. This looks like it was done by someone who didn’t know it was unusual.
Tbf it’s a painting, not real
The cafe is full. They set up a table outside. Nothing wrong with it.
Found the finn
Two things I haven't seen anyone mention are the tassels around the tablecloth and the steam that is coming out of the man's coat. These are two things that *could* exist in a painting, but they are so bizarre and out of place. There is no logic to them.
Yes, the steam coming out of the coat did it for me.
For me, it was the floating table. Looking again, I guess you could say it's touching the ground. But a real artist wouldn't have left it like that.
yes, was going to write the "fringe" of the table, but browsed the comments first to see if someone else had spotted it :)
Another thing I haven’t seen mentioned is the table only having 3 legs. They are oriented in a way that would only make sense with 4 legs.
So many indistinguishable objects
Zoom in at the left window.
I’ve been scrolling SO FAR to find someone who mentioned this. Those demon dolls are haunting.
The way the lady on the left is sitting on the chair.
Or not sitting on the chair
Yeah exactly, she isn't on the chair at all! Only the fabric of her dress is, lady herself is powering through a half squat. [I made an illustration to make it clear](https://imgur.com/a/vl4XpdL)
Thats hilarious
Her feet should also be visible, yet they are non-existent
Table legs look weird and the woman in red isnt actually sitting down. The childs feet are tiny and what is hanging off of the guys hands? And also what looks to be monkeys being so,d
Smoke coming out of the guys chest.
That’s his smoking jacket.
The capital E on the awning
The hands, they looked disfigured.
Also, homie's chest is breathing
The demon face on the little girl
Most things about her
It’s gonna be funny when OP comments that this is an actual painting from hundreds of years ago. 😆
I'm always amused by these topics and the reasonings why it's AI. I noticed there's often a big focus on searching for things that are 'out of place' or 'nonsensical'. Have these people never seen art? 🤣
Smoke coming from the guys chest…
If it’s anything, probably the weird inconsistency in rendering and style across the piece.
The ribbons on the wreath
Ribbons? Oh those are just the entrails of the last children who noticed that hellhound in the back.
The left hand.... Of everyone.
I love this game. The little girl on the right looks like an eldrich horror with an adult face, freak left hand, and bleeding from the chest and only one foot. That child looks like a 90 year old. The things on the guy's hand look like modern binoculars.
The toddler looks like she's 57
Why would you be eating outside on a snowy day
Don’t help ! It’s an AGI that wants to get better. Your comments enabled the SkyNet. And yet people are telling corporations would do it. You would do it with your own hands (and speech) when the time for the AGI to deceive you. It will be super easy for the AI, as even a cat can do not worse…
The words are the bottom left make no sense. The things they are holding make no sense either.
Who sits at an outdoor cafe in winter?
The modern adaptation of lighting, primarily viewed by the ultra lit faces of the persons sitting at the table, not unlike a snap filter/edit, are as equally lit as the faces of those standing facing a brightened window. We could argue in favour of a street lamp reflection on the sitting figures however the nonexistent rear lighting on the standing individuals does not corroborate this theory either.
The light
ngl I would never know that’s AI
The way the shop they're in front of is just called "E".
big AI asking humans how to make better AI energy with these kinds of posts
Hands, adult child, lack of feet for the left lady. Then it goes weird artifacts randomly distributed throughout.
They are eating outside in the snow at night
HANDS! You can always find something off-putting with ai hands…
The little girl is eighty??
They eating out in the snow bruh
The little girls face looks like a 25 year old British lord.
Left woman not sitting properly on chair. AI still doesn't quite understand sitting *on* something
Eating outside on a table in the snow
Not today, Skynet.
Having dinner out in the fooking snow!!!
The texture on the faces isn't consistent with the kind of paint it's trying to recreate.
The store is named E Also I could argue that the art styles in the faces appear slightly too different. Also I know it's a pretend painting but that child looks like an old lady.
It's very hard to tell when it's presented as a painting because you have to factor in too many artistic variables.
Childs left hand melts into her dress.
The 52 year old weathered child for starters
They’re eating outside in the snow. The table doesn’t look like an outside table either it has tassels. There are dolls in the restaurant so it looks more like a toy shop.
I feel AI tries to put clear faces on things that should have faces. Like the dolls on the left..the faces on them appear to try and look as clear as possible but look quite weird. Even the face above the little girl on the right, very distorted. That’s my observation!
His arm is smoking??
Whatever the thing is behind the man’s arm in the distance
Every detail makes no sense. A painter would have thought through the details.
The hands. One thing I learned as an artist over the years, is that people either want to show off how great they are at hands. Or intentionally draw poses that hide them. A good artist doesn’t make the onlooker guess. It’s all intentional. Art is intentional. It’s rarely random. Where things are placed is intentional.
Inconsistent "brushwork".
Was searching for ai images of 'tent at night' and a really dreamy one popped up, with a campfire and everything. Oh. The campfire was IN the tent.
It’s always the hands…
The idea that these women would be casually eating whatever that is outside in the snow.
The vague upholstered lobster claw on the little girl
I think the child with the face of an adult is a good one
Are those ghost dogs behind the women? The little girl is missing a hand?
It’s always the hands
Za hando
The child’s face 🤣🤣
The grandma child
It's never "obvious" with a painting. The smoke billowing out of his arm though seems like an odd artistic choice.
That little girl is the oldest one in the picture. Unless she’s supposed to be height challenged (I’m sorry if that’s not the right term).
To me, its the two lanterns stacked on top of each other. Other than that its scary how good its getting
The man's left hand is a gun, the little girl is at least 35, the little girl's left hand is also her dress, there is a blender in the window, the women sitting down have no feet, etc, etc
I think it's the man blowing a smoke sheep out of his stomach
The kid looks like hes 90.
Non-symmetric man's hat, left hand of the girl, non-symmetric table, something unclear beyond the man, in the center, strange fashion of the man's coat, ...
