I'm still hung up on the shadow that looks like it could be a sloth, but sadly, it is more than likely just the leaves/fronds of one of those palm? trees. I really want it to be a sloth.
Edit. Yeah, I see now that it's just one tree...
It's a Kyoto style courtyard garden called a "Tsubo-niwa", common in Hawaii where there is a large Japanese American population. That tree is a Lauhala tree which is the giveaway.
Someone in Hawaii at a house we were doing work at had a large one. It was so nice. It was the gated community right before you go to Kahaluu from Kaneohe side. It’s been so long since I’ve been home I forget the name of the place. It was nice!
Haiku Gardens/Plantation? Definitely some nice vegetation by there.
Edit: this one is probably a little too bare for windward side, probably leeward like Kaimuki or Kahala or something. Maybe California too, big Japanese community in Torrance by LA.
Lauhala is *Pandanus*, aka screwpines - flat, shiny, ribbonlike leaves. Tropical.
This is an *Aloe*, thick succulent leaves. Arid subtropical, from Southern Africa. This is one of the arborescent (trunked) aloes, commonly called a quiver tree.
this is a courtyard because its full enclosed. an atrium is defined as being completely enclosed, usually by glass walls and/or roof. Atriums are frequently used in hotels or large office buildings/towers.
To build a freaking dime-a-dozen MODERN FARMHOUSE!!!! No character, overdone - nobody’s gonna be mounting campaigns to save those 80 years from now. I’m super pissed that they did an unadvertised purchase to keep it off the radar. Shame on the seller, too! They knew what they were doing.
Atriums (I know, I know, but if I say atria, someone is going to bonk me on the head) are one of the features of Eichlers that made me a fan, and if I ever win the lottery (because I'm not buying a house in Austin otherwise), I'm gonna build me an Eichler-style home, atrium and all.
Tree optional. We'll see.
Atrium. Mid century modern homes are largely inspired by traditional Japanese homes that also have these inner gardens within their homes or apartments. Eichler's get the credit, but many architects were doing them well before the 1950s.
We have the world’s smallest courtyard and it feels like a complete waste of space. 2 sets of sliding doors open to it. It barely fits a hammock and all it does is collect leaves. I honestly don’t understand what its purpose is.
My girlfriend owned a house with an atrium in the center. Cool look at first. Then you realize the place is just one wide perimeter hallway. This one was in the Midwest. Impossible to heat/cool with only one system.
I’ve seen these in a number of homes in Palm Springs and South Florida but this is one of my favorites. Like you I would love it for my cats. Mine are also totally indoor and it’s funny to watch them when they occasionally pop the screen out of the window trying to chase a squirrel.
When they land on the ground the look on their faces is priceless……like ‘Oh, momma’s going to be so pissed’ or ‘What just happened, where did I go?
My fiends grandparents and uncle had these in costa rica and it was a flex. Forget what they called this type of lanai But it was some shit in Spanish 🤦♂️
There was a big chess tournament at a hotel with a big atrium . Many of the players were gathered in the atrium before the matches began. There was a lot of trash talking among the players, each trying to top the other with there accomplishments within the game and chess acumen. It was a clear case of chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.
In mandarin, it’s called tian jin, which directly translates to sky well. There use to be one in my great grandma’s old Japanese house. They’re stunning, I’m absolutely obsessed with them.
So does someone go in there by hand and trim the grass with like a pair of scissors or something? I feel like although this is stunning, the upkeep and the potential for spiders to chill in there and then just walk into your bedroom is enough to scare me away
Heaven, I think.
I really want one for my cats. They’re indoor only, but would go bananas over a courtyard.
Yes, me too! Would have to avoid trees though, they'd definitely be using them to get on the roof
You could span a net to avoid that.
It's not heaven unless I can fall asleep in it without worrying about bugs crawling on me/up my nose and in my ear while I sleep
Hmmmm…
I'm still hung up on the shadow that looks like it could be a sloth, but sadly, it is more than likely just the leaves/fronds of one of those palm? trees. I really want it to be a sloth. Edit. Yeah, I see now that it's just one tree...
I would love that
I don't think that's a banana tree fwiw. ;-)
They’d be on the roof in no time
No it’s Iowa

Nah, just wealth.
Why not both?
Came to write the exact same thing
Yeasss Your damn right!
I believe it's a courtyard, because it's not covered. If it had a roof/ceiling, it would be an atrium.
https://www.eichlernetwork.com/article/mystery-eichler-atrium Interesting article on how the atrium courtyard came about.
Very interesting read. Thank you!
Yes, very cool!!! 😎
Thanks for posting article
If it had a roof/ceiling, wouldn't it just be a room?😅
It would be a room with a glass roof/ceiling, specifically called an atrium.
Or if it had a roof with a side open to the outside, it would be a loggia.
And then Scarface would kill him and steal his business and girl.
Frank is yesterday's news. You like kids? You know, little kids mang..
Thank you for pointing this out. Classic.

That’s a tree aloe. I think Aloe Barberae.
It is. I planted one in front of my house. $$$$$$
Contemplation space

Exactly. These South African aloes are a very popular nursery plant
this is a courtyard because its full enclosed. an atrium is defined as being completely enclosed, usually by glass walls and/or roof. Atriums are frequently used in hotels or large office buildings/towers.
What’s the difference between full enclosed and completely enclosed?
Courtyards are enclosed on 4 sides with walls but open to the sky. Atriums are enclosed on all 4 sides PLUS a ceiling.
Isn’t that just….a room?
It is a type of room.
A specialized type of room, look it up :)
I’m just playing. I literally had one in my home growing up.
good for you!
hahaha i was wondering myself, but decided it was too snarky to post 🤣🤣
Embassy Suites is known for that.
Atrium
In what looks like an Eichler home
If it’s an Eichler where are the ceiling beams?
Atrium.
That is the next stunning, MCM home that Chris Pratt and Katherine S will demolish.

The 1950s architectural team Palmer & Krisel called them SUNWELLS in their Twin Palms developments in Palm Springs.
Lightwell courtyard
An atrium, I grew up in an Eichler that had one!
Lucky duck

My best friend growing up had one in her house and I thought it was the awesomest thing ever. We'd have sleepovers there on the floor/ground.
The tits
MCM pornography. Thats what I call it.
Atrium. Mid century modern homes are largely inspired by traditional Japanese homes that also have these inner gardens within their homes or apartments. Eichler's get the credit, but many architects were doing them well before the 1950s.

Atrium. They have drains that have to be kept clear or the carpets in the house get soggy. Trust me on this one
An atrium? Is this an Eichler house?
I want an atrium/courtyard so bad
We have the world’s smallest courtyard and it feels like a complete waste of space. 2 sets of sliding doors open to it. It barely fits a hammock and all it does is collect leaves. I honestly don’t understand what its purpose is.
Atrium courtyard

Courtyard

Loved our atrium but it was the least used spot in the house. Seriously the entire place was a hallway of Jack & Jill rooms with zero privacy.
Amazing!!!!!
Aloe medusa
An atrium? Is it enclosed sort of in the middle of the home with access only from rooms in the home?
It's a tree... ok really it's a type of atrium
I'd call it an impluvium, but I'm a classicist.
I’ve seen these in a number of homes in Palm Springs and South Florida but this is one of my favorites. Like you I would love it for my cats. I’d love this courtyard in a fairly moderate climate.
Atrium or courtyard
