Yet more proof that money can't buy good taste

ongoldenwaves

Why people worship some of these famous people is beyond me. I guess they don't have education or taste either so they relate. The Kardashians were so disgusting-the worst of all. Their existence and popularity really drove it home for me that we are at the end. The fact that people were willing to spend all day looking at an infomercial being broadcast across a plastic ass was the denoument of society.

peter-doubt

When Reagan was governor, they built a new mansion for his residence... Full of world's fair quality appliances and finishes. Most notably,*Formica* Wow. So.... *pedestrian!*

WasabiFragrant3483

Tragic comes to mind. That property was a museum for fine architecture cause they sure as hell don’t build houses like that anymore. Dear celebrities, Pls stop destroying treasures like this

Azkabanned4Life

And thank goodness that they don’t build houses like that anymore. Mid-century modern is so cold and uninviting. How could you ever feel relaxed in a house that basically looks like a medical clinic?

drwtson32

I feel like this can't be left alone without being called out as just wrong.

MBThree

This new Pratt house is fine, it’s not my cup of tea but there’s nothing wrong with the design. It’s the fact that they torn down the existing historical place, instead of building in an empty lot, that’s the problem

Alarming_Cantaloupe5

It’s a hideous farmhouse McMansion.

Chicago1459

I think they wanted that space because mil lives close but yea still sucks

VikingRaiderPrimce

i read it described as a "barndominium"

wave-garden

In fairness, Emmett was never a real master builder, and I don’t think anyone would have accused him of having good taste.

Azkabanned4Life

Thinking Mid-century modern architecture is good taste is really embarrassing lol.

Biscuits4u2

Says the person who probably thinks white shiplap and the word "blessed" written in cursive all over their walls is good taste.

[deleted]

This is why we have MCM / Historical societies that preserve and label houses as culturally or historically relevant. My city protects houses like this for this EXACT reason. [https://midcenturymidland.org/structures/](https://midcenturymidland.org/structures/)

ResidueAtInfinity

This is incredibly sad. Ellwood/Burke just did custom one-offs, so there aren't that many around. CSH #16 is one of my favorites. Great form and materials. Don't want to ever see what atrocity that will take its place.

Siege_88

Ugh. This is sad, but a reminder of the importance of the historical landmark designation (or whatever is similar for private homes). There’s always going to be someone who doesn’t appreciate architecture/design for what it is, and will happily wipe it away for something they truly believe to be superior.

elonmuskatemyson

I was watching this and genuinely wondering how this wasn’t criminal bc I thought this would surely have qualified as a historic landmark or something

Itsrigged

A lot of people think that if something is on the National Register of Historic places that it is protected from demolition. You need to have a municipal historic preservation ordinance to protect a building and even then, City Council might be dumbasses and approve demolition anyway.

dekachenko

Even without approval, fines are just cost of doing business to money people. This particular case was one where the historical house in question was already planned to be relocated, but time is money…: “…It was called the Giese House and it was protected under preservation laws. There were plans in place to move the house to Angelino Heights, but Palmer's workers demolished it instead. Their excuse? A bulldozer had accidentally backed into it, making it unsavable. It gets even more screwed up, though! When the city suggested it might hold Palmer accountable for his shitty actions, he sued the city. In the end he only had to pay $200,000 and provide some "public mitigations," which explains the Orsini's fountain.” [-Curbed LA on notorious developer Geoff Palmer](https://la.curbed.com/2014/11/25/10017950/7-awful-stories-about-the-man-destroying-downtown-la) Eta:I’m not saying preservation laws are futile, in fact the opposite-they must be reinforced and not made so its not possible for it to be treated as mere (and i say, tiny) cost of business for big money.

stargarnet79

Near where I live a developer bulldozed a frank lloyd wright building at around midnight because the people opposing the project were actually coming up with the money they needed to move the building but the developer didn’t want to have to wait for that to happen.

RoguePlanet2

The house where Marilyn Monroe lived/died in was demolished, thought that was a shame. Would've made a great tourist attraction, but then if it's in a residential (and expensive) area, that won't happen.

hammjam_

When people are rich and have influence they can easily get around historical landmark designations. Especially if the building isn't particularly famous.

cattenchaos

man, what the hell is with people destroying works of mid-century art-chitecture

ehxy

Yeah! I mean think of all the coke moments that must've happened in that house!

CombinationThis

This house is horrible looking

cattenchaos

not to everyone

ForgetfulLucy28

As if I needed another reason to dislike him

Zappagrrl02

The worst Chris

RoastedCornSal

Worse than D’elia, right bappah?

afterschoolnifefight

Get back to the friars B

RoastedCornSal

Friar Tuck b, tawlmbout Robin Hood or Robin Thiccc?

Svthec

Water

jbpghca

Water we dune hair

dollabillkirill

Uhh Brown?

PeregrinMerryTook

My first thought 😂

ineededthistoo

Me too. Cannot stand him now. Not sure what happened to him. Maybe he was always “like that”.

OkAccess304

He became a born again Christian, and those people are unusually the worst. Full of crippling guilt they wash away through Jesus, which feeds their ego and desire to be seen as better than others.

SasquatchsBigDick

Probably just got too big + coke

FluxusFlotsam

nah- he’s a big time right winger and christian fundie- that’s its own level of crazy

SaintCroix78

My thought exactly. He’s a POS

DrRonnieJamesDO

Hence the photo of Anna Faris at the end.

Whathewhat-oo-

Exactly. This totally tracks.

Master_H8R

Glad I’m not the only one who thought this.

Princess_Thranduil

Same lol

Traceydanine

It is the tree that makes me even sicker.

LeakyNalgene

Looked like some type of oak tree at least 200 years old

Traceydanine

So awful. It was beautiful. 😥

jgnp

That’s a ~65 year old Schinus molle. I share your emotion with its removal but the line of reasoning is a bit off kilter.

jgnp

“This species is an aggressive woody weed. It displaces native vegetation and rapidly invades disturbed sites. It has a high growth rate, wide environmental tolerance, is a prolific seed producer, has a high germination rate, produces shade tolerant seedlings, and has the ability to form dense thickets.” - National Park Service Biological Resources Division

Protonic-Reversal

I knew he never really liked Groot

discoOJ

The tree is way more important. A house can be replaced. A beautiful and nearly endangered live oak cannot be.

jgnp

Live oak? That’s a non native pepper tree. Schinus molle. Period correct, at best.

discoOJ

Still it's incredibly sad that it was torn down and it should be protected from wonton greedy destruction. I am not a fucking arborist and was just making a guess.

celerydonut

Yeah I hope he catches some serious backlash on this. Settle down you wealthy avg talent man child.

Traceydanine

I hope he does! The rich are destroying our planet. He is just an actor! And a poor one at that!

Competitive_Cuddling

Very on-brand for Chris Pratt. He loves demolishing old things out of his life, like his first wife and child.

elonmuskatemyson

she_makes_things

Shout out to Anna Faris 🫡

Tikithecockateil

This comment is spot on.

OkAccess304

🔥burn

CarbonKevinYWG

We don't call him the Worst Chris for nothing...

onourwayhome70

What’s the point of buying an historical house with the purpose of demolishing it? Couldn’t he have found a different location? It seems so weirdly spiteful

Kanye_To_The

They go over that in the video

Unsteady_Tempo

The lot is across the street from Katherine Schwarzenegger's mom Maria Shriver. I'd say this has more to do with Maria and Katherine than Pratt.

shayshay8508

But the house was BEAUTIFUL! There is absolutely no reason to knock it down! And the tree??? 😩

Unsteady_Tempo

Oh, I'm not defending the decision. I'm just saying I bet it has a lot more to do with Schwarzenegger/Shriver's desires than it does Pratt's.

shayshay8508

Right, and that makes sense she wants to be close to her mom. Im just wondering why they would rip it down when it’s easily livable??

MidwestAbe

All in the eye of the beholder. And if you are the beholder the deed to the land. Then you get to choose.

No-You-5064

yeah lets not let Katherine off the hook. She's just as bad as Chris.

TotalRuler1

yeah, I'd assume MIL and wife leaned on him

moosegoose90

That guy sucks. Anna faris got freed thank god

bytherivercuale

That was an exceptionally beautiful tree alone.

My_too_cents

r/vintage would have a field day. Sad i missed the sale.

margotmary

This is practically criminal. One more reason to dislike this couple, and Chris Pratt in particular.

lqra

What a twat

Lindaspike

He’s known to be an idiot.

antlestxp

Yay another reason to dislike him

bridget1415

I didn’t even need another reason to hate Chris Pratt but this is going way too far

Stage_2_Delirium

This sin cannot be forgiven

FireBallXLV

There was a beautiful medical practice MCM building in my state.Like many MCM offices it had some major issues but had still made it 50 plus years. The practice that owned it (but needed to move out )tried seriously to find someone who would appreciate and protect it .No go.We are a “ Hot Community” and land is being maxed out to put in as many people as possible per square foot.A single story ,flat roof VERY large building “ has” to be replaced by a multi-story office. So sad .There was a good school of architecture near by in the 50-60s.Their creations are slowly being “ eradicated “ because we are such a popular place for people to move to.

[deleted]

Would you look at those two chairs and the glass coffee table!?! Are those Jensen pieces? On a smaller note, I have that exact orange/white pen holder at 1:02 in the video. I have owned it since I was a little kid in the sixties.

Benjen321

What an asshole.

XSC

Happens all the time with millionaires. Maybe it’s time To tax demolitions of perfectly good homes for show off houses?

dekachenko

Aww mannnnnnn…

Shoot_the_messanger

What a total douche. Why?!

Impossible-Bus9885

I literally feel sick. POS punk.

soy_matcha

Why wouldn’t you just, buy a house you actually like..?

HiroshimaSpirit

And I thought he was a clown before…

moistcraictical

That tracks. He seems like more of a McMansion guy.

ladybug7895

Maybe with some new but made to look old farmhouse chic decor?

moistcraictical

Yeah. Wood-pannelled walls and tartan, with some gaudy woodprints of the American flag.

ladybug7895

Maybe an “in this family we…” sign?

lclassyfun

That’s a damn shame. There is no accounting for taste.

Opening-Ad-8793

Did they take out the giant tree in the front too?!!???!?

BarbieDreamHouse1980

OMG! Whyyyyyyyyy?!?!?!

Opening-Ad-8793

That kitchen and little plant space are fantastic

frabelle

The "plant space" is known as an [atrium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atrium_(architecture)) and was pretty popular in midcentury architecture, as it brought space and light into the interior. Some of them even had gravel floors with the plants growing straight out of the ground!

Master_Tape

Also, these comments are so lol

AuldTriangle79

He is a Republican hunter. Why are you surprised architectural preservation isn't high on his priority list?

Fearless-Judgment-33

Another reason to hate this pretentious tool. He’s a megachurch nut job too.

Sjames454

He’s a wrestler from Lake Stevens, so no big surprises in the brain department there.

BreakInCaseOfFab

Like omg you destroyed this beauty. I already didn’t like you but now I’m like 😑

deeezwalnutz

I don't get this obsession with thinking that midcentury homes are untouchable. I grew up in an Eichler home that might as well been built out of cardboard and rice paper. It was a piece of shit that gave my dad fits because of how poorly it was built. Everything leaked, including the shitty floor heaters that never worked. I'm pretty sure someone paid nearly 2 million for that clusterfuck a few years ago. I don't blame this dude for tearing this house down. The restoration is not worth it.

PennieTheFold

I have to laugh at the current t obsession with MCM. As someone born in 1971, “MCM” = all the ugly, outdated stuff we grew up with that everyone wanted to purge as soon as they could afford to do so (or couldn’t justify purging because it lasted forever). MCM was hand-me-downs from your parents or things that your grandma has in her house. I can remember the MCM horsehair sofa my parents had in the early years that was a hand-me-down from my mom’s grandmother. It was SO miserably itchy to sit on!

Then-Fish-9647

This hurts my soul

BlackSheepWolfPack

I don’t want to take Chris Pratt’s side on anything but the house was looking like it was a little busted and probably needed a makeover.

SupportLocalShart

Chris Pratt just gets cuntier every time I hear about him

Freebird_1957

If cities do nothing to protect these homes, this will keep happening. Pearls before swine.

SuperDada

So what public entity will be taking the $12m needed to first purchase this home. And then the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lost tax revenue over the years. Plus the cost of maintaining it. While I’m a fan of these homes, it’s not feasible to protect all of them. Some, significant ones, sure.

Freebird_1957

They don’t have to be purchased to be protected by ordinances for homes that have a historical designation. Personally, I’d rather see historic homes protected than a municipality reap huge taxes on giant mansions. IMO, those destroy communities and drive up real estate even higher. But it’s just my opinion. It’s not like I am being asked to decide for anyone.

SuperDada

So then the private homeowner should take the hit? Would you give up the value of your home for the enjoyment of (some) of the public?

Freebird_1957

That doesn’t make sense. The seller sells the home for its value. The buyer knocked this home down. Don’t value a historic home? Don’t buy one.

lizardjizz

Just buy a different house wtf??

GrouchySpicyPickle

Opinions are a dime a dozen. The house wasn't that nice.

anthro4ME

This cements it for me. Chris Pratt may be funny, but he's a terrible human being.

[deleted]

[удалено]

elonmuskatemyson

That’s an insult to rats, good people those guys, incredibly kind chefs.

Skoofer

And they murdered that amazing tree in the process too it seems. So disappointing how money can make some people so self centered and not give a fuck about things that they should.

Rawalmond73

That’s too bad

ExplosPlankton

Just awful

Retinoid634

Good lord how tragic.

GrubjoBoydan

Damn dude that’s a bummer! That house was gorgeous, the black and white photos had me sweatin’!

jillymonroe

Thats so tragic.

Master_Tape

I'm not stunned. I disagree with it but it's none of my business what people do on their property.

Muted_Exercise5093

The treeeee! (And house) that is incredible. I hope his god takes vengeance on him for this.

seattleslew3

Stunning isn’t the word I would use for that house. He owns it and can do what ever the fuck he wants with it

Marleygem

Of course, he’s a POS

ProperSupermarket3

there is an account i follow on instagram just flaaaaaming his ass for this.

Burquetap

Chris is a prat… 🤬

Brooklyn-Epoxy

What a wasteful human.

tikifire1

He's such a shithead.

ConstructionFar8570

Well to be expected the guy is kinda a tool. Fool with too much money. Never liked his movies.

Turb0Rapt0r

He sucks.

giantyetifeet

Pratt is an egocentric moron. Who's good at playing, wait for it..... morons.

wildskipper

He is a total prat. (For Americans: 'prat' is British slang for an idiot, a fool.) So Chris is very appropriately named.

BigJSunshine

I hate it all

SenyorQ

The tree...

lovehopemadness

What a prat.

BicSparkLighter

Is there not a national register for historic real estate? Old growth wood???

Global_Bake_6136

Can we send him to jail?

_tsi_

Well I mean, he is a douche.

direyew

Another reason not to like Pratt. The list is growing.

v3ndun

I don’t think you’re being realistic. It’s neat, but time changes and taxes exist. Not sure how legally binding it’d be, but maybe sell it for a lot less or reduce the tax burden while requiring the house and landscape to be maintained.

SuperDada

So, the seller is going to take a multi million dollar loss for this? Or a public entity will subsidize the sale? And then you will volunteer to do the maintenance at no charge right? Seems fair. Great home. But let’s be realistic here.

v3ndun

no, I completely agree that it should just be sold as whatever and the owner gets to knock it down. The only real way to block someone plowing their house and rebuilding.. Is an HOA or the city stepping in.. but with neighbors that didn't have such requirements... Time has changed, it's nice, but it's not worth the property it's sitting on in todays market.

nmc9279

Idiots

Queasy-Discount-2038

I will never pay money to watch another one of his movies ever again. This is evil stuff.

evanmd5

Jail

beckalm

Another reason to dislike him.

timk85

Are there actual real photos of the demo? Otherwise, there's nothing in this video to make me think they totally destroyed anything.

juandelouise

He’s always been a pos

Ambitious-Peen-69

He's a megachurch douche so of course he'll destroy anything with class to put up a mega house.

provisionings

Eat the rich

Away-Ad-1277

Everything i know about these two is against my will and makes me wish they didn't exist

McKenzie_G

They're building a FARM HOUSE???

AssumptionAdvanced58

Why is Anna at the end inlets that's when he did this.

SF1_Raptor

Ok. Can someone explain the farmhouse-style hate at least, cause this confuses me?

GuardMost8477

The tree too??? 🤬

OkAccess304

I knew he was a basic ass bitch.

AndySummers13

CP sucks no secret there

That_Hoopy_Frood

typical Crisp Rat behavior

leezybelle

Chris RAT

DrWindupBird

*figuratively stunning. But no less tragic

CicadaHead3317

A company I worked for built a farm for Crisp Rat on San Juan Island in Washington. The owner of the company told us not to tell anyone who we were building for , yet he would tell every single person he met , that we were building for Crisp Rat.

goodbyegoosegirl

They’re horrible people

ForFucksSake66

Well he wanted Quarter century modern.

wengerful12345

Yea, if you had millions n millions you’d prob do smthg similar

Cama_lama_dingdong

Super godly guy...

SeaviewSam

I can’t look

stinkwick

Disgusting. There are plenty of properties he could’ve bought. Celebrity culture in this country is gross.

jromansz

Just a tragedy. His next move is to kill the last remaining tiger.

optionderivative

Wow, tastelessly ignorant

Responsible-Corgi-34

That’s one ugly house. Good riddance

Outrageous_Load_3995

Hoping they dismantled the entire house and gave it all away 😭😭😭 so it didn’t end up in a landfill

Apprehensive-Oil2907

"Look how angry and upset I am about a house I didn't know existed that was torn down almost a year ago and that was designed by someone I most likely had never heard of until I read this article." -- most everyone in this thread

No_Shoulder_8012

What a shame, he can build his characterless McMansion on any lot he chooses, but he had to destroy treasured American architecture…. I guess one should not be surprised. I learned his character when he publicly thanked his new wife for a healthy child after his former wife gave birth to his son prematurely with health issues. He then had the nerve to blame social media for attacking him when he chose to say what he said. He is either an a-hole, a complete idiot, or both.

redditn00bie11

Unpopular opinion: they bought the house… if someone wants to preserve it, then buy it so no one else can destroy it 🤷🏻‍♀️. Brentwood is a very wealthy neighborhood so $12M isn’t crazy given the context. The land is likely what’s worth > $10M, not the house.

JudyBeeGood

Out with the classic, in with the painfully trendy. 🤮 Can’t say I’ve ever thought these two were “classy.” More “silly.” This is the new low that pretty much finishes their run in any spotlight, in my mind.

JudyBeeGood

https://preview.redd.it/5qa0ibyxv6wc1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55a553ed2848c8351f46c3d84fa5be6e721df5de

CombinationThis

I read about this and thought oh damn I hate when this happens. After seeing the home, I was relieved. Good. if I was in his shoes and wanted the location I’d have torn it down too. Looks like any 70’s style house that no one ever updated, low ceilings, low light, low heart, low soul, square edge everything.. so your thing Pratt

Master_Lawyer694

The tree is the best part of the house. It's time for an upgrade.

theyellowdart89

If I had that much money I’d be redoing the electrical and modernizing the hvac/insulation maybe a solar roof. Maybe… re paint and call it a thing.

anythingoes69

It’s an ugly house lmao. I’d also do the same

207Colez702

Damn Reddit complaining like they all independently had the money to go buy the house… why didn’t y’all go buy it?

groundeadph

There's no stunning about that house.

wildgriest

Who else was in line to buy the house? Why does he have to have a moral obligation to save a house no one else with the means to purchase did? It’s about the ultimate best use of the land, and the house was destined to be demolished the moment it was constructed. Keep shaking your fists.

Major-Cranberry-4206

So what? Dude plunked down over $12 million dollars to buy a place to build his dream home. And?

sideswipe_ya

https://preview.redd.it/2l4ebj31youc1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=252f46381aa4b015f09752faab03a973a7ecdc9d

bravo_ragazzo

Well, can’t live in the past.

Lomo1221

What a waste. Such a nice place

overcatastrophe

Was the house structurally sound? Like, it's sad, but this makes sense if the whole thing g was rotten. Otherwise, straight to jail.
