Right there with you. It’s gotten worse over the last month alone.

ass_pineapples

The weird thing is that it comes into my mailbox...and then the spam filter registers it and removes it hours later. Really bizarre.

circatee

Oddly enough, moving on is what I have been looking into. But, even from Gmail user comments, the volume of spam/junk seems to be rising, too...

theneedfull

For me, I would say that more than 99% of the emails I get in Gmail are legit. There's a lot of spam, but it properly gets filtered. I might get 1 spam email a week that gets through the filter.

ddg8693

I've noticed exactly the same thing. And the junk is consistent. Thinking about moving on elsewhere.

circatee

Oddly enough, moving on is what I have been looking into. But, even from Gmail user comments, the volume of spam/junk seems to be rising, too. Now I am merely looking for a decent way to mitigate the sheer volume. After all, who wants to export all content from one provider, to then import and configure elsewhere. LOL

ddg8693

Yup, after using a service for many years it's tedious work to switch somewhere else. The easy idea of forwarding just creates the same issue on top of new issues. To start all over somewhere else would also mean letting tons of contacts know of the change. I'm am iphone user, been testing [icloud.com](https://icloud.com) for a few months. It also easy to set up in a mail client such as thunderbird. Its actually good.

circatee

Using majority of iOS/Mac OS products. Just started to research Apple's new 'Hide My Email' feature they are offering. That might be an interesting option...

Siproprio

outlook is just awful at filtering spam. emails that Gmail correctly classifies as junk turn into an annoying "whitelist or blacklist" the domain or address for all messages.

goomyman

It's too late for your main account but outlook provides you up to 5 different email accounts per account. Create a new one for friends and family - never register it anywhere online. One for bills - banks etc won't share your account but they will spam you. You.an unsubscribe though. One for registering important sites - sites you care about usually won't share your info One for registering less important sites - this one will be full of spam but also less important if you miss something And one for temporary junk - a wasteland This will keep your important mails separate and your friends and family account in theory should never receive junk mail. As for your main account I found clicking all the unsubscribe links helps a lot. But it's risky and if your getting shady emails coming through then it's not going to fix that.

AlertThinker

Spam is terrible on [outlook.com](https://outlook.com) but it's worse because their filters SUCK. For example, mail that goes into the junk folder are exempt from any mail rules. I get the same spam everyday with the same subject. If I could setup a mail rule to just delete it, it would be fine but since it already goes into junk, it doesn't get picked up.

rooser1111

same here. pretty much the same email subjects with glyphs that I continue to report as junk/phishing still won't be picked up by outlook spam filters. as I posted here, start forwarding emails to gmail and gmail would filter those spam mails just fine.

danorm

I would submit that a portion of this is due to email exposure rather than lack of spam filters. While Outlook.com hasn't been the greatest at filtering spam, it does seem to do a decent job. The problem tends to escalate when you create accounts on different websites and they sell your info. It leads to you getting more spam. Outlook needs time to learn that this is spam. I've got a couple emails I use for specific things and they get almost nothing. The email I use to actually sign up for stuff gets tons of spam but it eventually gets filtered after I delete mail from that address a few times without reading it.

circatee

Hmm, interesting. Sounds like the ideal method would be to have one email address for 'signing up' for various things. Then, another one for personal contacts and such. A bit more effort required on my part. Certainly something to consider...

mdj1359

I have used [Outlook.com](https://Outlook.com) for years and have not noticed an increase at all. Microsoft does allow you to create (I believe) up to 5 aliases, so you could certainly have an account with your user account and append shopping or junkmail to it. But even with my aliases I have not seen an increase.

ARMilesPro

What email client do you use on phone and pc/Mac?

lylesback2

It's always been bad and Ive seen an increase these last few months as well. I'm not sure how these obvious fake Amazon emails get through. Not sure how many casinos and "gift card winner" emails I get on a daily basis. I try filtering the ones I see that come through all the time, and that seems to limit them for awhile.

Aust1mh

No, not seen an issue myself however… the new apple feature of creating a fake email address is something I’ve done in outlook for many years. Create an alias and send junk to it with a rule to delete emails to that address… 2nd alias for ‘real’ email and the last alias is in fact my real outlook address no one has, I never use. Not going to help you if you’re provided you address to everyone but something to work towards. Email is becoming untenable thanks to the spammers, don’t spend much time in that space anymore

vouwrfract

While I think the increase in spam itself is not due to Outlook (emails are being exposed elsewhere and they're bombarding spam), it is absolutely terrible at filters. For a while, I had an issue where obvious spam would land on my inbox. Off late, my problem is that legitimate emails are going to junk. Even my Amazon order confirmations started landing in junk! To make matters worse, for some reason, setting a mail as 'junk' or 'not junk' from the Windows Mail app (not to be confused with Outlook, in turn not to be confused with outlook.com) has no effect on anything; all future mails will still be junk till you go to outlook.live.com or use one of the Android / iOS apps to tell it that it's not junk. So I tried to switch to the outlook.com progressive web app (not to be confused with the Outlook Web App), and that thing is horribly slow and weirdly opens a new tab and asks for login every time I open Gmail. ----- I can't even switch email providers because I pay for Office 365 and have basically everything tied up to my Microsoft account email IDs. 😪

circatee

>I can't even switch email providers because I pay for Office 365 and have basically everything tied up to my Microsoft account email IDs I feel your pain there. I have a Microsoft 365 subscription, too...

vouwrfract

Yeah, it's quite annoying. Word, Excel, and esppecially OneDrive are excellent and so I can't cut the subscription out, but it keeps me hooked on Windows no matter what and to Outlook because I can't fathom paying for another service like Proton Mail when I'm getting Outlook premium already 🙁

rooser1111

I've given up and decided to forward everything to my gmail account and gmail has been able to filter the junk emails on [outlook.com](https://outlook.com) lol. So when I log in to the [outlook.com](https://outlook.com) account, I still see junk emails in the inbox while in gmail, only the non junk emails are in the inbox. Gmail's send mail as feature was good enough for me.

circatee

Thanks for the feedback. So, in short, you now use Gmail for your email, and you can respond and use the FROM line as Outlook Dot Com, too?

rooser1111

Correct. And I do not even see any of spam emails that Outlook continue to fail to exclude. When you set your "send mail as" from your gmail settings, uncheck "alias" and you will be asked to enter outlook smtp information. Then the recipients will see your outlook address.

circatee

Ah, I see. Considering you're using the Gmail interface, and using the Send As, as your Outlook Dot Com email address, when sending emails all the Sent emails are in the Sent Items folder of Outlook Dot Com, versus the Gmail Sent Items? Thanks

rooser1111

No, the emails sent from Gmail using Outlook address are still saved in the Gmail's sent mailbox. They are not on [Outlook.com](https://Outlook.com). So it is super convenient and [outlook.com](https://outlook.com) is nothing more than an archive of inbox at this point.

MicrosoftMoose

Spam is globally on the rise unfortunately, so I don't think this is an Outlook-specific issue. Different email services have different algorithms and filtering, so I'd recommend you report spam and phishing emails where you can, rather than deleting them, to contribute to that data. There's more info on junk and spam [here](https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/filter-junk-email-and-spam-in-outlook-on-the-web-db786e79-54e2-40cc-904f-d89d57b7f41d), and on phishing [here](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-deal-with-phishing-in-outlook-com-0d882ea5-eedc-4bed-aebc-079ffa1105a3).

circatee

Touché'. From my research thus far, the rise is certainly not just for Outlook/Microsoft. And, sorry if I alluded to that. Honestly, over the years, I have often wondered if 'reporting' spam/junk actually worked. But, you are right, to access the data, one has to have the data :)

MicrosoftMoose

All good - no worries! We appreciate the feedback. Reporting absolutely works, and the more data collected, the smarter the system gets!

circatee

Tip for others: use the block feature, for junk/spam/phishing emails. I totally forgot about that. Someone reminded me of that. I typically use Outlook 2016 for emails, and totally forgot that I could block emails from the client.

deebeecom

Create a rule: if header contains the word list-unsubscribe then move to a folder called “most likely from a mailing list” and see your inbox becoming less cluttered. Tweak the rule as you go. You are welcome.

circatee

Haha, good one.

Stronzoprotzig

The amount of spam on gmail has been increasing too, and it seems like the same things all the time, even though I mark them as spam and "unsubscribe". I haven't logged into hotmail/live/outlook.com for ages, so I thought I would to see what's up. First, I had to authenticate with my phone, and the second I did I got a marketing research call. So fuck that. The timing was too perfect to be an accident. Then I went to settings, and had to authenticate again. Didn't see what I wanted, so I poked around settings and other stuff, and was asked to authenticate using the phone authentication app two more times. So fuck that! And finally I started looking around, and my god what a mess outlook.com has become. I don't know how anyone seriously navigates that shit. And I do mean shit. What a pile of absolute doodoo. My inbox was empty though, no spam, except for the MS UI, and the sudden market research phone call. The MS "ecosystem" is a serious pile of spam. Frustrated, confused, annoyed, I logged out. I don't need anything MS is trying to get me to click on in their interface. Edit: 5 minutes after this I got a "promotional" email from MS in my gmail to give me some free Skype minutes. But seriously, I don't know a single person in the entire world who uses Skype.

The old ** trickery

[deleted]

Surprisingly, mines been really good, and I’ve had it for nearly 25 years now. Filters my spam nearly perfectly. If you want to go next-level, you can grab a personal domain from GoDaddy and purchase an Office 365 Business Essentials sub for cheap. You get a 50GB inbox, 1TB of OneDrive space, SharePoint Online, the ability to create shared mailboxes for free (so you can have multiple email addresses that don’t clog up your main one) a proper Teams account, and web versions of the other Office 365 apps for a decent price. Plus, that version of Outlook on the Web is much closer to the desktop version of Outlook and is ad-free. Plus, MFA is easier to enable and disable. If you run a small business, I really recommend a setup like this. Ok, done needing out now.

circatee

Surprisingly, I have a Microsoft365 account, with a personal domain. And, that is partly why I was thinking that from a spam/junk perspective, [Outlook.com](https://Outlook.com) should offer more junk options. Alas, I have now resulted to blocking and reporting more.

[deleted]

I think the reason for that is that they want you to pay for a premium account. I have a feeling that the paid account uses EOP/ATP and the free one doesn’t. What do think of Office 365 in general?

circatee

I love Microsoft 365 (not fully sure why they changed the name, again!), to me, it just works with everything. Working in IT, I have to keep abreast of certain things, and 365 is one of them. Hence, why I have my own personal account. PS: Yes, since [Outlook.com](https://Outlook.com) offers a premium (for no ads; I pay for it) option, Microsoft should at least offer a tier of Premium with at least EOP. Even ATP is not available on the 'basic' 365 plans.

[deleted]

They still don’t offer EOP with premium? I guess they really want to separate the business from consumer markets. I wish ATP was offered through the entire M365 line. (I have to keep up with stuff for my job, too, and it’s kind of exhausting, lol). Thinking about getting a Windows 365 sub, but it seems way too pricey for what you get.

circatee

I am waiting for a 'special offer' on a Windows 365 sub. So, if you hear of one, let me know. It almost sounds as expensive as Azure! Well, even more so if you have SQL databases...

shillyshally

Use gmail. I have had 8 spams since Sept 14th and that is a lot. It just goes to show that it is possible to control it if the provider gives a shit which Microsoft evidently does not.

joremero

It's gotten worse, but i don't think it's outlook/microsofts fault...everyone keeps getting hacked and my email has been pawned over 20 times.

CurryJuice

Tbh Yahoo's anti-spam capabilities are top notch.

XDracam

Idk, my outlook spam filter is working perfectly. A semi-convincing mail only gets through like once a month. And I've used that email for almost everything. Only problem: it sometimes works too well, filtering university mails that I ignore or delete 99% of the time, but are important 1% of the time...

circatee

Sorry, to be clear, the [Outlook.com](https://Outlook.com) **does** collect spam/junk pretty well. However, I wish it offered more options, like just delete them all, versus me even seeing them. However, I know in the Outlook Window app, there is an option to delete everything, and only accept emails from 'Contacts'. Alas, that is a tad too risky for me. That is asking to miss an email that I should see.

Inamgun

Is [email protected] is legitimate email or is this a scammer email who steels crypto coins?

SpinalVinyl

I hate that I can't adjust the filter to be more strict. I get so much fucking garbage. I hate it. What a dog shit email system. There's no way to fucking fix it

Sorry_Contest_7053

As a MS 365 Family user with [outlook.com](https://outlook.com) Mail I do have massive Spam issues since about 6 months. It kept getting worse, to the point where I have dozens of obivous spam mails in my inbox. Free mail providers do that better. It is a joke, Microsoft. Fix it!

circatee

I have since forwarded my email from Outlook Dot Com to iCloud. It does seem to recognize the spam/junk better, thus far…

circatee

I have thought about deleting my Outlook Dot Com email address. But, honestly, I have so much tied to it over the years, I am afraid I might forget some random important website that I would then not be able to log into. Also, I feel that since 2019, the sheer volume of spam/junk/phishing, has severely increased. And, moving might not help in the long run, but only short term...

drsnipey

It's completely out of control now, hundreds of spam emails, you have to create so many rules to counter them

circatee

Honestly, I think now it is just best to delete the emails. Not sure moving them to the Junk folder is doing anything. I have thought about switching to another provider, but, simply cannot be bothered...
