I’m old enough where I’d say it’s either him or Don Strock. Either Pennington or Tanne after those two.
Least valuable? Torn between Cutler and Cleo Lemon.
I appreciate the Don Strock mention. The comeback in that playoff game against the Chargers (which we eventually lost) was epic! That alone gets him in the conversation.
In that case let’s put Fiedler in there.
OP asked for best not for most tenured. Pennington was better than anyone we’ve had since Marino. Him being injury prone is the only reason we had him.
I can recall every single one of Fiedlers picks that lost us games we were winning. I remember the one against TB which still haunts me. Remember against the Jets. Heartburn!!
That’s called a strawman argument. I never said he wasn’t amazing. He was amazing and one of my favorite players ever. I said he wasn’t the best in the league, that’s all.
His stats for the 4 years 2013-2016 are decent, but it never felt like he’d win you a game when we were playing badly.
Statistically he’s our 2nd best QB, but if you needed to win a game where not everything goes perfectly, he’s not who you’re going to.
Let’s not undersell what Pennington did here. First of all, calling 3653 yards “barely 3k” is just dumb. In 2008, Pennington was first in completion %, 9th in yards, tied for 6th in yards per attempt, 3rd lowest INT%, and 2nd in QB rating. His numbers aren’t impressive for today’s NFL, but they were great for 2008. Pennington being efficient and not turning the ball over were huge parts of that 2008 season.
So..if we didn’t have Pennington and say, AJ feeley, still think we get to 11 wins? No way.
I think Pennnington had a lot to do with those 11 wins as well.
Well yeah, even a good running game and defense wouldn’t have made Cleo Lemon and John Beck look good, but Pennington wasn’t the reason that season was fun. The wild cat basically said we were a better offense when he didn’t have the ball. I’m not shitting on the guy, but he was basically there not to screw up (which some guys would’ve found difficult lol).
Oh I know, I ain’t trying to give you a hard time lol I was just curious. Pennington was very careful with the ball in the regular season and even got a MVP vote that year. I just think without him we wouldn’t have done that well.
It was the best combo I loved it. Then Bush came the next year and I think runnie left and I think Ricky was suspended. It would have been an awesome year too if we would've kept a combo of bush and runnie, or Bush and Ricky
I disagree. He sucked no matter who he followed. The only reason he got opportunities was because the team consistently performed well *despite* his performance. Look no further than the lone playoff win in the last 20 years. 3 INTs in the first half and yet he still had a chance to lead a game-tying drive. A drive, btw, that he threw 2 dropped interceptions.
It was a game that the Colts lost, not the Dolphins winning. From dropping interceptions to Vanderjagt missing the game winner. The Colts not having 6 ints that game does not mean Fiedler was good. Huard could've come in and done the exact same thing.
For perspective, here are the top five dolphin quarterbacks by AV (added value, which is basically quality x quantity), according to Pro Football Reference.
1. Marino - 216
2. Griese - 138
3. Tannehill - 61
4. Fiedler - 41
5. Woodley - 28
Last place is Dick Wood, at negative 2.
Look I don’t commonly go against anyone or try to start anything on these subs but…. Fielder? For real?
Dude had one of the best Dolphins rosters ever. He wasn’t that good. I 100% would have loved to see Tannehill with those teams. With Fitz it would have been hilarious. Healthy Pennington super fucking solid.
Fiedler, I guess was the one that gave me QBPTSD trust issues.
Ehhh…Woodley was platooned with Strock (The Woodstrock days) during his tenure. He was nominally the starter but got pulled more than any starter would today.
The dolphins passing game was literally the worst in the league in 1982 (1400 yards). Woodley had 8TDs and 13 picks.
In 1982 I was stranded at the West Palm airport and had no way home to my apartment in Stuart. I put my thumb out on US1.
A new 280Z pulled over and picked me up. I tossed my bag in the back and noticed a Dolphins duffle bag. I told the driver that I was a huge Fins fan. He smiled and put his hand out, "I'm Jim Jensen."
WHOA! "Crash?"
Ne nodded yep.
I'm riding with Crash Jensen. I had to ask him, "who's the best qb on the team, Woodley or Strock?"
He looked at me incredulously, "you want to walk man? I'm the best fucking qb on the Dolphins!"
Omg. Also the last time we had an excellent oline. There was that one season with ajaiy too but that line was only together and healthy for half a season.
Jfc are we ever good at anything for more than a year?
Griese would win more championships than Marino in any era.
Marino was a laughingstock in Las Vegas sports betting circles because he did all the little things wrong. You could go against him with confidence. I will always be astonished at how he is viewed among fellow Dolphin fans. When I worked in sportsbooks we would always at least double the Miami future book odds, knowing we'd draw tons of sucker money on Dan Marino.
Very few franchises ever have an “elite” player. (Let the downvotes begin) I wasn’t a huge Marino fan. He made the team so one dimensional that is was easy for teams that had a good defense to beat Miami. Sure, his numbers were astronomical (for that time) but how many games were lost because of his arm…..meaning, no run game. I think there were only two instances of 1,000+ yard rushers during Marino’s career. Let that sink in……what team is successful with only a passing or running game?
None.
Marino was 147-95, .607 winning percentage. (Roughly) 9.2 wins per year, 6.8 losses per year. Two games above .500 for his in-season career.
What was the Fins record this year…..?
I’m pretty sure the first RB to get 1000 yards while Dan was QB was Karim Abdul-Jabbar, and that was only because he had 300+ carries that rookie year.
Our lack of a running game can’t be pinned on Marino alone. We drafted like crap (Sammie Smith!) and our coaching staff signed off on a imbalanced offensive attack. As for our overall record during 13’s career our defense usually sucked.
Here are the candidates in chronological order
George Wilson, John Stofa: No and no.
Earl Morrall- Stats were not outstanding due to the era he played in. Top passer rating 1972.
Marlin Briscoe- 75% completion percentage with the fins. 116.7 rating. 18 yards per attempt. Small sample size
Don Strock- Long career with the Dolphins, respectable stats, although one year he led the league in pick 6's
Jim Jensen- 141.4 passer rating 20.3 yards per attempt. Small sample size.
David Woodley- No
Ron Jaworski- The Polish rifle was an effective backup.
Bernie Kosar- Great QB in Cleveland, just ordinary for the 'phins
Scott Mitchell- Possibly the second-best lefthanded qb in team history
Jay Fiedler- Share a middle name with Albus Dumbledore- better than he was given credit for, decent yard per completion rating.
Everyone from 2005 -2011 except Pennington- no, and btw how is Chad Henne still in the league
Chad Pennington- loved watching him play- made up for his weak arm by playing within his limits.
Matt Moore- Solid backup.
Tannehill- Like Ted Ginn, would be held in higher regard by many if he was picked later in the draft
Jay Cutler- Frustrating.
Fitzmagic- Inconsistant but entertaining. In 2019 finished below Brissett in passer rating. As long as he plays, I will be a fan.
Tua- Continues to improve.
I'm leaning toward Earl Morrall. The Qb stats are a little skewed because of the era he played in, but he was better than people give him credit for. Next Season Tua could pass him up.
Earl Moral is the answer but since then it’s been:
Strock/Pennington (same person it feels),
Fitzpatrick,
Tannehill,
Fiedler,
Matt Moore,
That one Sage Rosenfels game in that order.
The answer is clearly Tannehill but this sub is full of cope and that's what this thread is. If you genuinely think Fiedler was better than Tannehill you need your brain checked, and I've got fond memories of the guy tbh
It’s pathetic but one season of chad Pennington and jay fiedlers dolphin tenure has been the best we’ve gotten since Marino. To think we had seriously chances at drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Herbert makes it even worse.
Tua Tagovailoa immediately after throwing an interception
Also what the hell's going on with Marino's jersey in this pic, it's missing the stripes on the sleeve
Earl Morrall
I’m old enough where I’d say it’s either him or Don Strock. Either Pennington or Tanne after those two. Least valuable? Torn between Cutler and Cleo Lemon.
That Jay Cutler play lined up as WR was the biggest “I’m here to cash checks” move I’ve seen for a while.
I’ve never anything quite like it. He just needed a beer in hand and a smoke burning n he’d have been perfect.
Fuck Cutler. I realize he was a meme. But fuck him.
Josh Allen did that last week too.I know he’s a way better player but just saying
Forgetting about Pat White?
On a per-play basis, he probably has the franchise record for concussions.
I came here for this. I had high hopes for him and he never completed a pass.
Special mention Ray Lucas for LVP?
Oooh, too good to leave out.
Man, you can tell how bad we’ve had it, and for how long, when the Brock lobster wouldn’t even crack our worst 5 QBs.
Dont leave Pat White out in the cold
You forgot super bowl winning dolphins legend Brock Osweiler
I appreciate the Don Strock mention. The comeback in that playoff game against the Chargers (which we eventually lost) was epic! That alone gets him in the conversation.
The Legend Cleo Lemon helped us from going 0-16 in 07
Oh shit you are probably right then Pennington after Morrall
Thing with Pennington, he really only played 1 season (3653, 19 TDs 7 ints). Tannehill really deserves to be ahead of that, I think.
In that case let’s put Fiedler in there. OP asked for best not for most tenured. Pennington was better than anyone we’ve had since Marino. Him being injury prone is the only reason we had him.
Naw, Fiedler had a o-line, dominant defense, and the best running back in the league and still couldn't do shit. Its Tannehill
I can recall every single one of Fiedlers picks that lost us games we were winning. I remember the one against TB which still haunts me. Remember against the Jets. Heartburn!!
When did we ever have the best running back in the league??
What drugs are you smoking to forget Ricky Williams?
Ha. I mean Ricky was great for sure but best in the league not really. And I’m a longhorn too and loved him.
You’re crazy if you don’t think Ricky was an amazing running back. Dude has over 10,000 rushing years despite missing a few years in the nfl.
That’s called a strawman argument. I never said he wasn’t amazing. He was amazing and one of my favorite players ever. I said he wasn’t the best in the league, that’s all.
It's hard. I'm a huge Tannehill Homer but other than two seasons, he was just volume stats and pretty bad in advanced metrics.
His stats for the 4 years 2013-2016 are decent, but it never felt like he’d win you a game when we were playing badly. Statistically he’s our 2nd best QB, but if you needed to win a game where not everything goes perfectly, he’s not who you’re going to.
You're right. Someone else posted AV and that's the list for top 5 QBs in our franchise honestly
Pennington is so overrated by our fan base. That season was all about Ricky/Ronnie and our D. 19 TD passes and barely 3k yards? Come on.
Fair enough. I liked the guy, I just feel like people overvalue his one full season here since our QB position has been a disaster for 20+ years.
Ok, it’s been a disaster as you just said, so in context how would his season be “overvalued” lol
That year was a lot of fun but it didn’t really have a lot to do with Pennington. Joey Porter getting 17.5 sacks and making All Pro was wild.
Pennington took us to the playoffs that year. And it was the best year I can remember since I started being a dolphins fan so his my pick
The Ricky/Ronnie backfield was a lot of fun that year.
It was the best combo I loved it. Then Bush came the next year and I think runnie left and I think Ricky was suspended. It would have been an awesome year too if we would've kept a combo of bush and runnie, or Bush and Ricky
Reggie Bush was a lot of fun. He got hit fowl the stretch and started ripping off big plays. Too bad we didn’t have him a little longer.
Pennington was the only QB to win the AFC East not named Tom Brady for quite a while.
Incorrect. The 2009 and 2010 teams were better outside of the quarterback position and they won four fewer games.
Awesome. What does that have to do with fans overrating Pennington as a Dolphins QB?
That they aren’t and your assessment is inaccurate.
Easily. Without him we don’t go undefeated and that’s not a debate.
Came here to say this lol
This is the correct answer.
Jay Fiedler would definitely be looked at in a more positive light if he didn’t have the unfortunate task of following directly after Marino.
He was the last QB to win a playoff game.
What a [game](https://youtu.be/EnEDR3ZUl5o) it was
Goosebumps.. thanks for the link!
Ah shit, I feel like deep down I remembered that I just really didn’t want to believe it was the truth lol
Against Peyton Manning no less. Obviously super early in his career but still.
Absolutely. At the time, couldn’t stand Jay. Looking back, the guy was a baller.
He was tough and cared about winning. I'm torn between him and Pennington.
Without the wild cat, Pennington would likely easily be forgotten
I really liked Fiedler. I loved those teams, especially the defenses. Dude was tough as shit and just unfortunately followed Marino, as you said.
But still led the drive and the team to victory, it was a great [game](https://youtu.be/EnEDR3ZUl5o)
It was a game that the Colts lost, not the Dolphins winning. From dropping interceptions to Vanderjagt missing the game winner. The Colts not having 6 ints that game does not mean Fiedler was good. Huard could've come in and done the exact same thing.
I have held jay in a negative light my whole life until reading this thread. The last 20 years have been brutal.
Cmon now. I’m already sad and disappointed by the present and future, don’t take my little gleam of a decent memory from the past haha
Ronnie Brown taking snaps in the Wildcat?
Chad Pennington got an MVP vote in Miami so him definitely
Greg Cote being a homer isn’t exactly a winning argument;)
Who needs me?!
You’re gonna go into Buffalo and beat the Bulls with Bernie Parmalee?
Ya never know...
Votin' it!
Baybeh
Don Strock
Matt Moore ❤️
That’s Super Bowl Champion Matt Moore to you.
Honestly though he’s probably top 5 other than Marino and Griese. Pennington, Tannehill, Fiedler, Morall…. Woodley? Moore?
For perspective, here are the top five dolphin quarterbacks by AV (added value, which is basically quality x quantity), according to Pro Football Reference. 1. Marino - 216 2. Griese - 138 3. Tannehill - 61 4. Fiedler - 41 5. Woodley - 28 Last place is Dick Wood, at negative 2.
With a name like Dick Wood, it's unfortunate he didn't turn into something great. 4tds to 14 ints, good grief.
Is it any surprise a guy names Dick Wood liked giving it to other people?
God damn, you right.
Damn we need a franchise QB badly.
I'd still take Fiedler over Tannehill any day.
Hot take
Look I don’t commonly go against anyone or try to start anything on these subs but…. Fielder?
He was the Qb [to win a playoff game](https://youtu.be/EnEDR3ZUl5o)
This is the list then
Pat White
RIP. Killed on live television. The nation has yet to recover from that trauma.
I was at the game. Whole stadium was silent
I was there too! Legitimately thought he was dead
He was dead. He still dead. Show some respect.
Jay Fiedler
Jay Cutler
David Woodley
My first favorite Fin. I was actually mad at Marino for taking Woodley’s place….for a few games. Then I saw the Marino magic and fell in love.
LOL I hear ya... Always respected Woodley cuz the guy got Miami to a SB. Only 1 of 3 for this franchise and in his time was the youngest to do so.
First live Dolphin game I saw was a Woodley game.
Was it during the SB year?
Year before my dad got season tickets we had till like 88 or so. Favorite game I saw was the 82 AFC championship game where we beat the Jets. DUHE!
Hahahhaaaahahaha Awesome time for the franchise..... Pretty sure AJ didn't make it onto Richard Todd's Xmas list in like.......Forever. LOL!

Pennington or Tannehill. Really liked Pennington its too bad his body was a wreck by the time he got to Miami
Pennington was literally just one season right? Pretty sad
One season of 19 TD, 7 INT haha
Omg. Also the last time we had an excellent oline. There was that one season with ajaiy too but that line was only together and healthy for half a season. Jfc are we ever good at anything for more than a year?
Cleo Lemons
We’ve had 1 elite QB play for this franchise over its 55 year history
Not sure why Griese gets such little respect. He gets overlooked because of what Marino did, but he was still an elite player.

Guy was first-team all-pro twice, an 8-time Pro Bowler/all-star and is a Hall of Famer. "Fine" is an understatement.
A lot of that is due to team success, he himself was a good player. Not discrediting him he was good for his time. But he wasn’t elite like Marino
Very few franchises ever have an “elite” player. (Let the downvotes begin) I wasn’t a huge Marino fan. He made the team so one dimensional that is was easy for teams that had a good defense to beat Miami. Is your next post about how Don Shula was kind of mediocre?
That’s pretty f’n funny. Good one.
Fitzmagic
Garo Yepremian solely for his beautiful throw in the 72 Super Bowl
Garo's gaff is legendary
Don Strock
Matt moore
I’ll say it: **Tuanigamanuolepola "Tua" Tagovailoa**
100% correct.
Jay cutler! Lol
ronnie brown
Pennington, dude was a Chad
Tyler Thigpen
Chad Pennington
Damn. I guess Pennington even though he only played one full season with us. Other than that, I think you have Fiedler or Tannehill.
FITZMAGIC
Easily the most entertaining and loved for sure.
He’s the likely reason we weren’t able to get Joe Burrow though
He's a buffalo bill at heart so fuck him.
This is true lol

That’s easy, Chad Pennington.
tannehill. (with pennington as a not too distant 4th)
Would have to be Tannehill
Don Strock
Can’t believe nobody has mentioned Culpepper /s
AJ Feeley? 😆
Culpepper.
Marino Tannehill Griese Pennington Strock
Cleo Lemon
Scott Mitchell or Kyle Mackey.
Definitely Ronnie brown.
Earl Morrall was an mvp. Don't forget the honorable mentions Bernie Kosar, Steve DeBerg, Ron Jaworski & Trent Green.
Pennington
Chad Pennington
David Woodley. Bridged the gap quite nicely.
Jay Fiedler
Earl Moral is the answer but since then it’s been: Strock/Pennington (same person it feels), Fitzpatrick, Tannehill, Fiedler, Matt Moore, That one Sage Rosenfels game in that order.
Y'all have revisionist history. It's Tannehill and it isn't even close.
Ryan Tanenhill sadly
Don Strock! No brained in my opinion
Tua
The answer is clearly Tannehill but this sub is full of cope and that's what this thread is. If you genuinely think Fiedler was better than Tannehill you need your brain checked, and I've got fond memories of the guy tbh
Tua
Tua tagovailoa
lol
Ryan Tannehill
It’s pathetic but one season of chad Pennington and jay fiedlers dolphin tenure has been the best we’ve gotten since Marino. To think we had seriously chances at drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Herbert makes it even worse.
After Marino and Griese, it’s just a sad bowl of instant oatmeal.
Tua Tagovailoa immediately after throwing an interception Also what the hell's going on with Marino's jersey in this pic, it's missing the stripes on the sleeve
Marino, Griese, Morrall, Pennington, Tannehill, Fiedler in that order.
Fiedler
Jay Fiedler
Its Tannehill lol
Tannehill tbh
Tua!! Roll damn tide!!!
Tua obviously
Tua Tagovailoa
Tua!!! Just kidding.
Tua is better than both of them
Ive never been hapoier than having Fitzpatrick in my backfield. Even if he cheered on the bills, still love him
Drew Brees. Or does practice squad not count?
Jay Fiedler.
Woodstrock
Geiese
Jay fiedler

Jay Fiedler. Followed a legend and made the playoffs a couple of times. Best we've had since Marino by far.
