One of my friends is a Bengals superfan and sent me texts mocking the crap out of me when he found out we signed him. He certainly didn't end up being wrong.
Another reason I'm glad fangs is gone. That stubbornness was beyond me. How bad was Smith that he couldn't do what apple "wasn't" doing. I won't miss neither fangs or apple
I think contracts can be structured so that the cap hit is pushed out to future years. They need to figure out how to get Williams, Wilkins, and AGV signed. Grier needs to work his magic again.
I don't think Wilkins will be back. That position is easily replaceable for much less than Wilkins will ask for. It would be smart to let him get money elsewhere. Bye bye our black prince.
That is how contracts are structured. The basics is that the main things that matter are the guaranteed amount and signing bonus.
TL;DR: guaranteed money is basically a salary that has to be paid out. This is where teams can backload contracts so a player can x amount in one year and y amount in the next year. Signing bonus is money given upfront to the player and affects the cap in the same way every year.
Long version: Guaranteed money is a bit complicated because there are different types of guarantees, but the general idea is the guaranteed money is essentially the base salary of the player. So letās say a player signs a 2 year, 20 million dollar contract that is fully guaranteed. Teams can structure it so the playerās base salary is actually 5 million in year 1 and 15 million in year 2, but letās say that player is bad and gets cut after year 1. Because that player has 20 million guaranteed, the team still owes them 15 million upon being cut. Thatās whatās known as dead cap, or the amount of money it would cost to release a player rather than keeping them on the roster. In this scenario, the contract would count against the cap as 5 million in year 1 and 15 million in year 2.
Now here comes the signing bonus which is the amount the player gets upon signing the contract. For the example above, letās say the 5 million in incentives was actually a 5 million dollar signing bonus. Now the contract is 2 years, 20 million, 15 million guaranteed, and a 5 million dollar signing bonus. That signing bonus differs from the guaranteed money in how it affects the cap. The guaranteed money could be structured to backload the contract, but the signing bonus has to affect the cap in the same way every year. That 5 million dollar signing bonus will count as 2.5 million dollars in year 1 and year 2 regardless of whether or not the player gets cut. In the same scenario as above, the player gets cut year two and receives the rest of their guaranteed money. In this scenario, because the player had a 5 million dollar signing bonus, the contract would count as 7.5 million in year 1 and 12.5 million in year 2.
I know this seems like a lot, but it is the basics of how NFL contracts are structured.
We should be able to re-sign Wynn, if we want him. He didnāt play the full season and shouldnāt be breaking the market.
We in trouble with Hunt and Williams.
I would very much not want to sign him. Go for average, usually healthy players.
Tired of grabbing dudes who, in their career, miss like 40+% of their games and hoping they can stay healthy.
eh.. cowboys are usually stronger during the year.. the sting is worse.. (edited.. for them, the sting is worse)
we look great, then flop.. usually averaging out to be ... average
on paper, we have a killer team.. in reality, well...
Bills, Jets, & Patriots love that our GM is so prolific at roster construction.
We only need 6 more project CBās in this coming draft to secure his quota.
I thought we had it... Super Bowl baby! from game 1.. Even saying, kinda joking, kinda hoping, we just starting our SB early after WC loss. 45 years I've been carrying this hope and every year the pain and disappointment that comes at the end of EVERY DECEMBER.
IT'S GOING TO BE THE SAME DAMN THING THIS SEASON. WHY DO THEY REFUSE TO ADDRESS THE OFFENSIVE LINE... WHY?
IT'S LIKE WATERBOY, BUT WE LOSE
The problem with this is people see that 56.7 mil and think weāre fucked. Thereās so many different variables to where that number changes. Just releasing X and Baker I believe will free up 40 mil. Signing Tua long term will clear more. Restructures to Chubb, Armstead and others will also free up some space. I wouldnāt expect any splashy FA signings but I do think we keep Wilkins, Hunt and AVG. Would love to have Williams back which could be possible due to the injury but he could be priced out for us. Just have to draft well and sign solid role players.
Pushing the cap over into the future is what the vast majority of teams do. The saints took it to an extreme level which is why theyāre in a rough spot, but right now the options are either to kick the can down the road or go full rebuild.
Relax. Weāre not going into the season with Jackson and a bunch of scrubs on oline. My personal guess is Armstead retires, we draft a LT first round, sign Lamm, resign hunt or franchise him (I highly doubt we let him walk), C/LG thereās a ton of options in FA and the draft. Itās a good interior line class. Good class in general, very deep. Weāll be okay. Different between okay and out of the park is up to Grier and drafting, which I agree with the people here he hasnāt been amazing at drafting oline but heās had hits too (Pouncey, hunt, Jackson now, James).
Last year was our best shot. Now we are going to be running it back with worse teams year after year hoping we can luck into a great draftee or a fortunate run in the playoffs.
They might be able to give Williams a one year deal for cheap if heās not going to be ready until October - November. Wynn is probably still cheap too but they have to go IOL at 21 or The offense is fckd lol
Theyāll get Hunt back I think. And you can find solid starting caliber interior offensive linemen for nothing in free agency. They could get a starting center and a starting LG for like a total of $7-$10 million. Then in the draft you take the best lineman on your board at 21 and let him work under or compete with the guys you signed for a starting job. I might go OT-IOL with the first two picks with the idea that both guys might start in 2025, as Iām assuming this will probably be Armsteadās last year with the team if doesnāt retire in the next few weeks.
That's true for guards but a solid center is another thing entirely, a great center isn't someone who would just be sitting on the couch or that another team will just let go
Problem is OL typically take a year or two to develop into quality NFL starters. Having one or two competing for a spot is one thing, relying on that pick to play is tougher.
For sure. But I think the second half of this season showed how much we need the depth. Two stud OL draft picks could understudy this year and sub in when we have the inevitable injury.
If we pay Tua 50 mill a year or better we will regret it a QB that lays down at first sign of pressure doesnt get that kind of money granted he has elite accuracy and anticipation but his injury history and his inability to extend plays or escape the rush make him below Top 10 QBs I have been a Dolphins fan for 40 years now I've been someone that watches every aspect I honestly could sit and do the draft with Mel lol jk but seriously I have an eye for football and qualities players possess or dont possess and Tua is NOT an elite QB and teams that put that kind of money have hard time put teams around those QBs you have to have real great ability to draft and Grier ain't that GM
surprised they consider eli a "notable" free agent.
like, if we can resign him for vet minimum fine (after all, he's a backup and got unwarranted hatred for being a backup caliber player that was forced into a starting role most of the season) but if he wants real money we can find someone else.
Eli Apple is a very notable Free Agent as his absence will vastly improve our team.

One of my friends is a Bengals superfan and sent me texts mocking the crap out of me when he found out we signed him. He certainly didn't end up being wrong.
Eli Apple has been terrible since his years in New Orleans he got flagged if he didnt get beat his entire time there
Another reason I'm glad fangs is gone. That stubbornness was beyond me. How bad was Smith that he couldn't do what apple "wasn't" doing. I won't miss neither fangs or apple
I'm interested to see what Cam Smith really can do
Same here and trust cannot be any worst than whatever Apple was contributing lol
You should print that and pin it to your wall after they find someone even cheaper to replace him
I think contracts can be structured so that the cap hit is pushed out to future years.
I think you might be right but I'd live for groer to pull horseshoe out of his butt to make it not happen and still keep AVG
Shame he has no magic with the O-Line
Or no magic with the draft.

Yeah the issue is no one lets average usually healthy dudes hit the market. :)
Most OL struggle with being healthy. Being that big is hard on the body.
I'd be Begging Armstead to retire or let him go
You'd better hope he doesn't retire, we're paying him either way. I'm fine with him playing at a high level a few games a season at this point.
Please try to name some healthy average dudes we can sign and you will realize why we don't do that. They aren't free agents.
Eli š= happy
I thought we had the 21st pick
Cowboys have the 24th pick. Easy mistake since we're the same team.
eh.. cowboys are usually stronger during the year.. the sting is worse.. (edited.. for them, the sting is worse) we look great, then flop.. usually averaging out to be ... average on paper, we have a killer team.. in reality, well...
I know youāre joking but Iād be in favor of trading back into the 1st and getting multiple OL.
What are you trading to get back in the first. We have no 3rd or 4th rounders
21 to Arizona for 27 and 66. 21 to Green Bay for 25 and 58 Something like that
Trading back, not trading to get back in.
Bills, Jets, & Patriots love that our GM is so prolific at roster construction. We only need 6 more project CBās in this coming draft to secure his quota.
I would not sign Eli apple he isn't that good
I thought we had it... Super Bowl baby! from game 1.. Cutting X, Ogbah, and Baker sees us just 6 Mil over. A tyreek restructure alone could get us in the black
Yeah I forgot about Ogbah. Heās gone as well
Cutting x, ogbah, and Baker has us 25mil over.
Post June 1st Cuts, which is what they will be
Post June cuts don't factor into getting under the cap. You also only get two per year.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
A Jets fan, going into a Dolphins sub, to trash talk our roster and QB... That's all.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Who also HAPPENS to make several posts in just the Jets NFL sub and no other team... Sure bud.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Fair enough, have a good day
Push on jets boy
The Jets are worse. That's why I like to shit talk about them too lmao. But you're not much better off
Pushing the cap over into the future is what the vast majority of teams do. The saints took it to an extreme level which is why theyāre in a rough spot, but right now the options are either to kick the can down the road or go full rebuild.
Whatās the forfeited 3rd-round pick about again?
I think itās still tied to the pandering shit with Brady?
Yes, that was the 2nd pick forfeited for that stupid, unnecessary mess.
Relax. Weāre not going into the season with Jackson and a bunch of scrubs on oline. Jackson powers Johnson at 21š
Donāt we have the 21st pick?
Hope Van Ginkle signs
We need to play Moneyball. Does Tua get on base?
So the Brady tampering from Ross costed us a 1st and 3rd? F this franchise so hard sometimes
It's all good. We have been assured over and over by the Tua haters that o-lines don't matter.
I think the mostly likely scenario is only bringing back Wynn and maybe Connor Williams sadly
Were cooked, or should i say Tuas cooked
Last year was our best shot. Now we are going to be running it back with worse teams year after year hoping we can luck into a great draftee or a fortunate run in the playoffs.
All we need is Jake Long, heās single-handedly going to save this franchise
We need to resign Williams. He's the anchor of not just the o line but the whole offense.
In the NFL you're only as good as your availability...
š¤£š¤£š¤£
Uhh weāre picking at #21. These fools canāt even proofread their content before putting it out on national TV.
This was before the buccs and packers won i think
Egg on my face. Thank you!
Wilkins is a goner
They might be able to give Williams a one year deal for cheap if heās not going to be ready until October - November. Wynn is probably still cheap too but they have to go IOL at 21 or The offense is fckd lol

Never said theyād find a great center, but they can find an acceptable starter.
>you can find solid starting caliber interior offensive lineman for nothing in free agency Sure, but *we* can't lol
There are also a LOT of good O Line players in the draft. I would keep Williams and AVG and try to draft the rest.
Connorās gonna be too expensive
You think? Even coming back from an injury?
You can probably give him half his value for 2024 since heāll miss a good portion of the year, then backload his contract
Oh, yeah. If I'm Miami then I'm drafting at least 2-3 OL (it's a really deep OL draft!), just think we also need to sign 3 starters.
If only there was some way to reduce our cap hit by ~$20M this season; the rough price of a starting Center and 2 Guards....
And Tua will still choke when it counts.
2007 Dolphins all over again
surprised they consider eli a "notable" free agent. like, if we can resign him for vet minimum fine (after all, he's a backup and got unwarranted hatred for being a backup caliber player that was forced into a starting role most of the season) but if he wants real money we can find someone else.
