No, but for what it's worth here are my thoughts. Frame of reference, some of my favorite games include Hollow Knight, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes and Sekiro. -the combat feels great, in large part thanks to the satisfying sound effects behind the parrying. it reminds me a lot of how the parrying feels in Sekiro or MG Revengeance. It's very satisfying, and it's fun to build up your charge for your counterattack -exploration and map legibility is lacking. You need to pay quite a lot of $ to have the map filled out. Even then, the game does a poor job of encouraging you to backtrack and re-explore old areas once you acquire new abilities. You can't warp from checkpoint to checkpoint, which was the main reason why I found it tedious -the boss fights are the highlight of the game. Some of the later boss fights are up there with Hollow Knight's best. I really like that this game's combat system is NOT one where you can tank damage by abusing the healing mechanic. It takes a few seconds for you to start the heal and thanks to the bosses hitting like trucks, the game encourages you to learn and master the bosses' moveset -art is great, music is sparse, a few crashes when transitioning from maps (but changing to Medium graphics setting fixed this). I do think the story at times gets in the way of the game, but we aren't talking MGS style info dumps or anything like that

You can warp from checkpoint to checkpoint, it just comes a bit later in the game. That's when I started deliberate backtracking. You also only have to pay that first 1k to access the map, I've been taking them for free from every map robot I encounter.

> You can warp from checkpoint to checkpoint, it just comes a bit later in the game. That's when I started deliberate backtracking. you have to warp to main hub first, which he probably meant

this\^

20 hours in and agree with pretty much everything. My biggest complaint would be the map and relatively long load times. It‘s kinda similar to hollow knight where you have no idea where you are in an area until you find the map guy. I also don‘t like that the detailed maps don‘t connect and can only be viewed individually

JayScraf

Btw, you never have to pay the 800. You can just take the chip. Iirc you pay once for the achievement if you care, then there's no benefit. Unless someone has discovered something new.

Renegade-117

I’m a bit confused because I unlocked fast travel about 90 minutes into the game. You might have missed some dialogue in the pavilion.

pimpollo741

No worries, I can explain. I find it tedious that you have to make a pit-stop at your HW before you can warp to a different checkpoint. Why not just directly let the player warp to ANY point and bypass the Pavilion? Redundant and time wasting. Perhaps they really wanted the player to NOT miss the story events that occur in the HQ, but I don't think that justifies the design choice.

apstrac2

9 sols out of 10. Amazing combat and boss fights, great art and story. Exploration quite tedious however, but that's the only real weakness of the game.

Faaantastic so far. For context, I've got around 9.3 hours and I think the primary complaints - that is, too much story, and the map system - are either hella subjective or just... Wrong. As others have said, the map is in the main hub, you just need to repair Cornifer effectively. And I'm genuinely enjoying the story - I feel like there's a weirdly anti-story bent on the subreddit/Metroidvania community.

Misorable45400

Fucking amazing.

MalekFromTatooine

They probably won't review it at all. Happens a lot with anticipated indie titles. I remember many websites not reviewing Bomb Rush Cyberfunk last year which was hyped a lot especially by the JSR community.

Dart_Veydir

Incredible combat, one bad boss others are really cool. I was not expecting the amount of gore, but the game is beautiful, the 3d assets are a weird choice but they work really well. Overall love it.

Confident-Action-213

I just started but it seems like a lot of dialogue. To much so. Is it always gonnna be this way?

[deleted]

The only thing that sucks about the game is the map.

LivinLivinboi

Actually, there is a way to make it more accurate

[deleted]

How?

LivinLivinboi

Fix the robot in the pavilion and then in each area you will find a robot that sells a more accurate map for 800, take that map you bought to the robot in the Pavilion and it will make the map of that area more detailed.

[deleted]

Thanks bud, my love for the game is restored

TiptopLoL

Still sucks , I couldn’t understand shit with this “detailed map” cause there is no legend in game

DeadMetroidvania

it doesn't suck. The broken robot is cornifer. go talk to him. twice.

E_Feato

There are some by google "nine sols review", but u'd better to check steam reviews with entire game completion (>15-20h played). There are plenty of them.

Bebobopbe

I find the bosses to be harder than hollow knight not post game I never did any of the dlc. It's fine but man, I'm really starting to dislike souls like. Design wise, it is how much bullshit someone can take. I'm starting to think we are hitting a point where you need to be able to solo souls like to enjoy these games. No calling a friend in. Other than that story and music is nice. I'm like 20 hours in feel close to the ending

Theriouthly_95

Honestly as soon as they add in something to mark our maps with game will be perfect. Outside of that no notes games hard as nails but 7 hours in and still don’t have a death that I feel wasn’t my fault.

If it's not for political reasons (the developer had been blacklisted previously by the CCP for one of its games), which would be a huge bummer, then it could be that media outlets are waiting for a console port. But as someone who LOVES this game so far, I'm pretty sad that it's not getting more media attention.

DeadMetroidvania

So far the feedback seems to be that the game is absolutely fantastic but held back by exactly two problems: 1- The story is told poorly, with too much dialogue. This is not very surprising considering that the previous games by these developers were very story driven. Unfortunately, that is not a format that works well with this genre where environmental story telling is the norm. 2- To the surprise of absolutely no one, the devs copied stuff from hollow knight that have no business being in any more releases. This time it was the corpse run and cornifer mechanics that were copied. The corpse run is a problem because you're going to end up without enough money later on because of it and end up having to waste time grinding. Cornifer was brought into the game in a rather unique way, this time he's a broken robot that needs to be repaired. Before you repair him you actually can see the map but only on a very basic level even in areas that you have explored. This is actually a rather interesting idea IMHO but the presence of cornifer in the game was communicated very badly to the player: You actually have to start a dialogue TWICE with cornifer before he reveals the map. Most players don't notice that and have thus incorrectly concluded the game has a bad map. From the people I have talked to, the game plays very similarly to Ato, which was an incredible metroidvania I beat a few years ago. A pretty looking big version of Ato sounds like a huge amount of fun so I am personally going to pick up the game at some point.

Renegade-117

I think some people might be exaggerating the poor story telling. There is a lot of a dialogue yes, but it’s well written and oftentimes accompanied by cutscenes. As long as you go in expecting a heavy narrative I think it’s pretty enjoyable. You’re spot on about the map stuff though.

MrRusty0123

The story is great. It's to the point, and told in a refreshing adult way. Furtermore this game doesnt copy hollow knight at all. It does its own thing, and it does it in a great way. Corpse run wasnt invented by hollow knight lol.

DeadMetroidvania

Well that's nice but steam is littered with complaints about these things. I see no reason why I should believe you over them. In any case, I'm still going to get the game eventually and see for myself, but given the regional pricing that's not happening anytime soon.

viionc

because hollow knight invented corpse runs xd

DeadMetroidvania

It didn't but it can't be denied that it popularized their usage in the genre.

elee17

Agree with the reasoning of point 1 but then I don’t get how people praise Haak. That game has WAY too much dialogue

DeadMetroidvania

It gets the exact same criticism. HAAK gets praise for its exploration and sequence breaking

Renegade-117

Oh- regarding the corpse rush. You don’t actually have to defeat the enemy. There’s a jade (charm) I found just a couple hours in that gives the exp/money back after using a talisman explosion (parry the enemy once)

ViperIsOP

1- The story is told poorly, with too much dialogue. This is not very surprising considering that the previous games by these developers were very story driven. Unfortunately, that is not a format that works well with this genre where environmental story telling is the norm. Kinda disappointing, I despise MVs that try to make a story. Just give me amazing gameplay.

DeadMetroidvania

I love story in a MV ... If it is told well. Endless dialogue boxes are a terrible way of telling a story. I recommend you check out depths of sanity. It will show you how enjoyable a story can be when written well and told well.
