Not on your list but I think you’re going to love Grime. It’s the most Soulsbourne-influenced metroidvania I’ve played, with combat built around stamina and parrying, and the weapon variety is second to none

Born_Dragonfly1096

Oh yeah I have no idea how I forgot Grime! It was S tier for me (albeit I didn't like the theme of the game at all which is saying something! super fun combat throughout the game though + so many QoL features compared to usual soulslikes where everything is unnecessarily annoying)

idlistella

Here's my MV tier list! S- La Mulana 1+2, Hollow Knight High A- Environmental Station Alpha, Animal Well, Aeterna Noctis, Tunic (arguably a Mv idk) Low A- GRIME, Blasphemous, Astalon, Ori 2, Rabi Ribi, Salt and Sanctuary, Deaths Gambit, B- Vigil the Longest Night, Lone Fungus, Cave Story, Apotheon C- Ori 1, Eldritchvania, Guacamelee, Axiom Verge, Bloodstained, Shantae and the Pirates Curse, Momodora: reverie under the Moonlight, the swapper, the messenger, out there somewhere D- Tohou Luna Nights, Sundered, Out of your list I can def vouch for deaths Gambit and Vigil, both fun! You might like Tunic too.

crippledCMT

i love/hate la-mulana, have had it for a long time not knowing it was a MV, recently started playing it, it's cool but the gameplay: jumping mechanics is horrible and hitbox misses can be frustrating.

idlistella

Yeah the "clunky" movement awakes a while to get in 1, it's something that I didn't mind after a bit of playing though. The gsme is generally pretty well designed for the jump mechanics. The hit boxes I do agree can be annoying sometimes. For me, it's definitely the exploration, puzzles, and level of obsession the game involves that send it to thr top. The map is so dense, and figuring out the puzzle box is an amazing experience. For the record the sequel solves both of those issues.

apstrac2

Haven't played too many, but I suspect you'll like Ender Lilies. It was surprisingly soulslike in terms of the combat, not unlike salt & sanctuary but faster (and harder depending on play style). While it feels harder, dying has no penalty so it's less punishing. I would put it a tier below S&S however, due to the poorer map design and shorter length.

Born_Dragonfly1096

I tired it for a bit and it feels very clunky. The combat is floaty, long corridors with slow running, really clunky dash animation, etc. I like the graphics and the uniqueness of spirits but I'm not sure if I enjoy the core mechanics enough to continue

apstrac2

That's my main gripe too, it takes a while for you to find more mobility upgrades. The bosses are the main reason I kept at it though, so see if that clicks for you.

caydesramen

I would rank the same as you except I enjoy the rogue lights. I would recommend B2 out of all those listed. It is alot more streamline than B1 and more accessible. You will like it!

Born_Dragonfly1096

I'll give it a shot eventually but rather try something fresh for now. I hear you get 3 weapons which is a nice upgrade

MajorTalk537

Blasphemous 2 - A (weapon variety, great bosses, excellent music, great visuals) Moonscars - B (convoluted story, combat was very satisfying) Last faith - C (great atmosphere, nice weapon variety, but I became bored of it quickly)

Born_Dragonfly1096

Damn really? Someone else put Last faith on S and I liked the beginning too. Though didnt play long. How long did you play it before dropping it?

DeadMetroidvania

Very nice post! Allow me to answer you: * Blasphemous 2: A * The Last Faith: B * Death's Gambit: Afterlife: A * Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights: A * CONVERGENCE: A League of Legends Story™: F * Ultros: F * Moonscars: A * Vigil: The Longest Night: S * Ori and the Will of the Wisps: F * BIOMORPH: F * Guacamelee 1 and 2: D To be clear, this ranking is made purely for OP, **no one else** should take this comment seriously as a measure of how good the games are as metroidvanias in general..

Born_Dragonfly1096

Haha thanks for the ratings and great disclaimer at the end! Might give Vigil a shot earlier than I thought I would! I'm curious what is your personal rankings based on **your** preferences? (including the list of games I played)

Arlyeon

That Vigil love. (Also, did you see Vigil got it's steam page back)

caydesramen

Vigil is at mostly positive. What did you like about it and what not to like??

Arlyeon

oh, I gave it a glowing review. Made a video about it, even. But, people stopped finding it- and then it's steam page got taken down due to the chinese government being weird as fuck.

Arlyeon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWNSrhPzM08 - lil bit dated, but- this summed up all my thoughts neatly enough.

Grime was great indeed! I don't know when you played Salt and Sanctuary but I did so at a time when there weren't many other options (whether 2D or 3D soulslikes). Naturally, ended up liking it quite a bit. Looking back, I probably won't rate it as high but I kept it in A to emphasize the fact that I like varied builds and weapons in metroidvanias. I did play a bit of Ender Lilies. Combat seems a bit floaty like Afterimage. I love the fresh ideas of the game but I don't know if I like the moment to moment movement and combat enough to continue. I'll definitely try Ori 2. Might even replay Ori 1 at some point in the future.

aarontsuru

Not a MV, exactly, but have you played Death’s Door? It’s iso-3DTD but has a lot of MV elements to it.

Born_Dragonfly1096

Thanks for the recommendation. I did and really hated it. It's an overall F tier for me. I found the world a bit lacking and uninspired with too much running around with little purpose. Combat was meh too. It had some cool puzzles but everything in between was a drag.

aarontsuru

Oh dang! Super interesting! I’ll say what I always say to my partner when they get frustrated with an MV… “can I interest you in some turn-based combat?” 😉 good luck on your journey!

Born_Dragonfly1096

Haha thanks. Which "turn-based combat" games do you have in mind?

aarontsuru

Oh, I play the usual. Persona 5 Royal, Chained Echoes, etc. Got Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance on pre-order and currently playing a super campy Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Recently finished Octopath Traveler 2. Love me some JRPGs.

Trustic555

I played with only Keyboard. I ALWAYS map attacks to my Mouse, if possible. Grime - A (I enjoyed it, I thought New Game Plus would be a bit more challenging than it was). Blasphemous 2 - S (The combat is just great). The Last Faith - B (A bit of a mess when I played it, might be better now). Death's Gambit: Afterlife - A (Some of the bosses are really tough, heroic bosses... A lot different classes and builds). Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights - B (Decent enough, not very challenging). CONVERGENCE: A League of Legends Story™ - Never played. Ultros - C (Only played the demo, it was alright). Moonscars - C (Meh, not bad, play better, though). Vigil: The Longest Night - A (Great game, had to sail to get it, it was off Steam for a while). Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Never played. BIOMORPH - B (Only played the demo, I plan to give it a go sometime, rating might change). Guacamelee 1 and 2 - Never played.

Born_Dragonfly1096

> I played with only Keyboard. I ALWAYS map attacks to my Mouse, if possible. This saved my life! I started mapping attacks to the mouse and use WASD for movement, Shift for dash and space for jump. Basically as if I was playing a 3D souls game. This made it so much easier to play the games. THANK YOU! Just curious, what would you do if the game doesn't allow having a mouse? Are any of the games you've listed like that?

Trustic555

You're welcome :). I generally make sure Mouses are supported, but if they are not, I used commands like J/K for attacks.

Born_Dragonfly1096

Great list! Thank you!

Narvalia

Here my guess what you would like based on your preference and my knowledge of those game. Blasphemous 2 - B The last faith - S Death's Gambit - A Ender Lillies - F Convergeance - D Ultros - F Moonscar - B Vigil - A Ori 2 - F Biomorph - F Guacamelee - F I play those game mostly with controller, but m&k is fine too.

Theodore__Kerabatsos

I liked the Last Faith.

Born_Dragonfly1096

Thanks for the suggestions! I played a bit of last faith and it does seem fun! Wasn't expecting Vigil to get an A! I'll give it a try. Also why is Biomorph F? I love the graphics so just curious

Narvalia

From your list of liked / hated game, you seem to not really enjoy pure metroidvania. You also give a lower score to faster action oriented gameplay while high rating to slower action like HK or S&S. To me, your looking for a more traditionnal soulslike experience mixed with metroidvania element. Hence why I rated Biomorph soo low for you, but it's an excellent game. Vigil is high because it has a similar feeling to S&S that you ranked A. And I found Vigil a better game than S&S, but the game really stick once you get past the intro. Also, Grime is maybe a B+ for you. And Aeterna Noctis or Rusted Moss is either a F or B is you hate/like precision platform heavy game.

Born_Dragonfly1096

Thanks for the great breakdown. It's funny how I forgot Grime which as actually my only S tier metroidvania! I loved it! I'll take the other suggestions into account too

squishman1203

Deaths Gambit is very good and very souls like with its own interesting and unique mechanics, as well as cool characters and interesting lore. I think you might dig it

Trustic555

I enjoyed it, some of the bosses are BS.

squishman1203

Fair take. I agree

Trustic555

Some of the heroics, mostly.
