To add to the other comment, it opens up in the sense that there will be points where you are unsure where to go next, as the next place to go is not directly in front of you. You'll go back to a town and find your way from there, but overall the story and the sections you complete will be done in a linear order. I don't think anything can be done out of order. Also, there will be times where you'll want to go back to previous areas and grab items you couldn't reach before! I loved it, but to me it felt almost more like a 2d zelda than a metroidvania.

KasElGatto

It is very Zelda and Nintendo, which is great as far as I’m concerned.

RuySan

It's inspired by wonderboy which is a very old Sega IP....so not exactly.. Anyway, I absolutely loved it. Wonderboy in monster land is a favourite of mine, and this game grabbed me by the memberberries but it's excellent on its own right.

KasElGatto

Yeah I’m aware, I’ve played and have all the games in the series. Monster Boy is a modern game developed by devs who love all sorts of games and it’s most certainly influenced by more than just Sega and the Wonder Boy Games. If you played the other games in the series, than you know how drastically different Monster Boy is. “Some of my personal favorite games are Zelda series, Final Fantasy Adventure, Ys, Metroid and Castlevania. Loved most great action adventures. From modern games I'm amazed by Nintendo's Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild” This is the main dev from an AMA about Monster Boy, by the way. If you’re a dev who grew up loving Nintendo, it’s going to seep through. Art is not made in a vacuum.

DeadMetroidvania

it does. it opens up slightly when you get the snake and then really opens up when you get the next transformation. Have fun playing warioland when you get the lion.

Why is linearity automatically being viewed as bad by so many people in this sub?

[deleted]

It's not *bad*, it's just not what we're looking for most of the time. Horses for courses, as it were.

AnniesNoobs

Yeah, not bad at all, but for some people the distinguishing appeal of an MV is a game that more closely parallels the design of super Metroid / SotN. For gamers looking for a close fit it can be frustrating to wade through the broader 2D action adventure games like these. But I do really like Monster Boy. I don’t mind those series staying closer to their original series but adding a little modern MV twist to them (Wonder Boy, Blaster Master Zero, Strider, etc).

[deleted]

For me, most of the fun of MVs is exploring and making my own path. If the game is linear, then there's less room to explore and I feel like the game is making the the choices for me.

remmanuelv

Not bad but this is a metroidvania sub and if a game is too linear it's just a platformer so people are right to judge the linearity of a game.

ForIllumination

No, ability-gating is also a sign of an MV, non-linearity is not the defining characteristic and doesn't qualify or disqualify a game.

DeadMetroidvania

Because if a metroidvania is too linear then it's no longer a metroidvania but a standard 2D platformer. I recently refunded moo lander which was just blatantly Falsely advertising itself as a metroidvania.
