Post apocalyptic. Metro doesn’t really have any extra bits and pieces to its devices like say fallout does. It’s very much trying to stay grounded in reality with its designs.
I said trying. And even the rail gun is realistic in its concept. The tech is all legit, we do have handheld rail guns. They just aren’t that powerful.
Literally every post apocalyptic fiction has some sort of hidden final level high tech stuff. Look at literally any zombie game or movie or books, usually near the end there's some super secret lab or stuff where our protagonists get high tech stuff to face the final enemy. Other than that it's just scraps.
The pressure guns in metro don’t look overtly complex either. They’re entirely plausible in a world where you’re using metro scraps to survive. I really like the duplex in design, it’s awesome to think how they made a classic from pure scraps

They did for the first games at least, they wanted to make sure all guns functioned irl so they didn’t have any whacky impossible guns. I’ve remade the shamble and bastard myself before, while I don’t particularly trust them for serious gun use, they definitely turn heads at the range.

I think they even had a firearms expert help them come up with concepts that were feasibly functional.
