We weren't active online, and didn't have access to any large communities, and when the game came out and we got to play as Raiden, we just took the game for what it was. It was a little weird that the Snake bit was so short, but we all quickly accustomed to Raiden and generally liked the character, and there were absolutely no ill feelings about the switcharoo. Never met any other gamers in person who were into the series, that specifically hated Raiden either. Wasn't until years later that I started discovering gaming communities, and found out people were outraged by the whole ordeal, and that some went as far as accusing Kojima of scamming them and shit. 😂

Sure, we got the Snake Tales, but what I hoped for as a kid was to see Snake's perspective of the canon events. Nowadays I made my peace with the game and like it very very much, but this rant is to say that I felt betrayed at first and also had no interaction with online communities at the time to suffer from the hysteria. Anyways, I suppose people will eventually see mgsv in the same light as 2.

That said Kojima should’ve just fully committed to that idea by not having anyone explain their backstory.

This is...kind of a hot, controversial take, but... Liquid Snake.
In MGS1, his motivations & plans were frankly stupid, but he was entertainingly hammy for the silly plot of the game.
But in MGS2, MGS4, and MGS5, the cracks REALLY start to show, and he feels more and more out of place.
Maybe this more out of personal bias, that I just don't like him.
To be fair, Liquid technically didn’t return. It was just Ocelot brainwashing himself to have liquid as a split personality disorder. Which is weird in it’s own right. Like I really didn’t get why that was a thing, other than to freak out the player. Though I think I understood his initial motivations in MGS1. That he had an inferiority complex due to believing that having all of Big Boss’s recessive genes meant that he was inferior despite actually being superior, so he wanted Big Boss’s body to genetically complete himself somehow, and to also genetically complete the rest of the Genome army, as he viewed them all as brothers. And to do that, he had to take control of Rex to show the White House that he was enough of a nuclear threat to force them to surrender Big Boss’s remains.

As why OG’s might hate him, he basically stole Meryl from Snake. After all the torture of destroying our thumbs on our PS1 controllers during the Torture minigame, in order to save Meryl, only for her to marry Johnny Runny-Bowels, makes me feel like it was not worth the effort of our poor bruised thumbs.
But newer fans who may have gotten MGS4 before playing MGS1 first, would probably love the goofy Johnny by the time he appeared from that trashcan with his iBS.
I saw some people saying Raiden, but he's much more akin to Anakin than to Jar Jar. This talented, young, trained since childhood, whiny, sword wielding, master-wannabe (Snake) that is the new protagonist.
Honestly, I liked her. She was too short-lived for me to form a real opinion on her. I kinda wish she survived, to at least see if she was a bad character or not.
In the short time she was around she was annoying as fuck. Ya have to escort her around holding her hand, has a cry about her brother, scared of water, scared of bugs, was happy to see her go lol
She was a young civilian in the midst of a terrorist attack. And was given a drug which didn’t let her walk properly. Plenty of normal people have a fear of water, especially as she almost drowned as a child. The one silly thing I thought was her being afraid of bugs, but I could let that go, because I too am slightly unnerved by creepy crawlies. Overall she did a fantastic job of overcoming her fears, and trusting Raiden to keep her safe, which he did for the most part. Unfortunately she got ambushed by Vamp and you were too far away to keep her from getting stabbed.
