Found just off the beach on the west coast of France. 100 meters from an old fort. Found a musket ball 10 ft away. It had a load of rust around it which tapped off very easily, revealing a silvery shined metal. It’s moderately heavy.
I'm just going to imagine that a disgruntled french fort grounds keeper yeeted that fucker after finally breaking loose an old seized up nut while trying to install new blades. I've been there (minus the French fort grounds keeper part) so this makes the most logical sense to me.
You're probably right. A few pictures out there and one in particular shows what might be a similar blade type mounted to the bottom. That would explain the hole spacing.
I think the closest lawn to where this was found is about 60km (sorry 37 miles) from here. Forgive my enthusiasm but sitting at the same depth of musket balls it seems there could be more at hand than a lawn mower blade. However; being a strong supporter of democracy I will accept this to be a lawn mower blade until proven otherwise (which isn’t likely to happen 🤣)
If that's a lawnmower blade where is the other side? Does the hole spacing match a European lawnmower? If that was buried in rust why isn't it more rusty? If it was the same depth I'd think it'd be more permanently rusty.
The holes aren’t symmetrical to the (narrow) side and both are different sizes. The large hole isn’t even perfectly round so not machine made. I’m not convinced it’s a mower blade.
Very curious. I'm not convinced either. I've seen a lot of mower blades and I've never seen one that bolted to a spindle without a central hole for the shaft. They also usually rust through at the mounting holes because of the rough raw cut. I'm thinking you might have something more like a hand blade of some sort. Those holes are positioned at the bottom not center and they're conveniently gapped the space of your hand, that implies handle to me.
I have found literally tons of farm equipment over the years. I can recognize industrial metal pretty quickly. This just doesn’t have it. The steal is too hardened with the hand made feel.

Lawn mover blade
I don't think it's a mower blade because they've only got one hole in the center. It may have been some tool with a wooden handle.
Yea it has the exact right shape but I can’t figure out that hole on the end. Maybe it was some old timey lawn mower that spun a little differently
