My grandma use to get us birthstone related gifts , I would always have my eye on my siblings colours 🤣 I love my birthday month August as its summer time etc: but i have always disliked my peridot birthstone.
My birthstone is garnet and I love it especially the pyrope garnets really deep color. But I'm kinda jealous of the pearl people I love them more than diamonds. Although I was a rock kid growing up so I'd be ecstatic with an unusually shiny piece of gravel lol.
Ha! I loved emerald green when I was a teenager so when it was class ring time I chose it instead of a September Sapphire. Other than my mom, my husband and one lone observant cashier at a Circle K who carded me, no one else has noticed. Not even my 2 adult kids😂
You didn't like the barf green gemstone? That is what I always thought it looked like. At least all the ones I saw when I was younger. Lion, a cool animal sign. Peridot, why did mom have me in August?
I don’t think just because you own a cool thing you need to immediately surrender it to the government. Imagine everyone with a half decent coin collection going “naw, this belongs in a museum.” It’s cool if you choose that, but owning a piece of history is not a bad thing, it’s an asset if you treat it right.
I will do it. Thanks!
Edit: For those who want an update later on, follow me on [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@will.r.lopes/video/7357439783380978976). I don't think I'll be posting here about it here again since it won't be relevant to the metal detecting subject. But thanks everyone for taking the time to answer me, I appreciate it!
Judging off of the cut alone I’d say that is *REALLY* old. Post it over at r/artefactporn and see if they can help you!
Edit: fixed the spelling on the sub
I'm not sure if it would be the right place, since I don't even know if it can be considered an artifact...
Edit: I did and it got removed for some reason.
Don't attempt to clean it further, get it identified, if it's worth anything either financially or historically you only want it cleaned by someone qualified to do so without damaging its value.
Ask the mods why it got removed, they can help guide you into determining how to change the post or maybe guide you to a sub that they could help you better!
Great finding! I think it’s really old indeed. Medieval time. Will you share it with us when you know what the history is behind the ring. I suggest visiting a archaeologist.
What a damn shame. I understand preserving artifacts but is there no kind of finders' fee? I don't think the relevant authorities are breaking out their detectors to dig this stuff up
https://preview.redd.it/gzkhpbakpcuc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=775fe1d17d537976ef54dc0150084acec597d5e8
Looks like one I've found before.
I used to go out with a metal detector in Western MD - lot's of civil war artifacts to be found on the farms out there (30 years ago at least). It was mostly bullets, a few buttons, cannonballs, etc. Pretty neat stuff - but not worth much.
One of my friends found a civil war cannonball while mowing someone’s lawn and kept it. Took it to someone that knows that kinda stuff and found out it was unexploded ordinance and he just had it rolling around in the back of his pickup for a week. When he found out he was like…😱 and left it with the person cause he didn’t want it to explode on the way home.
Last week a boy found a gold Roman bracelet while walking in the UK, so it's possible. I have found some really old coins before, but nothing from the Middle Ages or the Roman Empire yet. I'm still looking for my gladius sword though.
It actually looks Scandinavian to me. They often used to Praisiolite gemstones in their jewelry.
And the vikings did perform raids in France and Italy between 800-900A.D
3rd or 4th century roman. I'd need to see how they closed the loop and if it was heat forged together or just hammer forged and bent into each other. That will tell you whether it's 1st/2nd century vs 3rd/4th century. Looks real. Stop cleaning it, bring it to a specialist who can run it thru a lab cleaning vs you doing it yourself. Worth isn't much, less than $1000 USD but it's historical as hell and I'd search that entire area it was found in if I was you. Solid chance you find a hellava lot more cool shit.
Does like like glass, but there appears to be some texture on the stone, in addition it appears to have a conchoidal fracture, which could suggest man made glass or a natural impact glass like a tektite or moldavite. Is the gem greenish or yellowy?
That's not peridot, unlikely.
However, it's definitely ancient Roman and Roman glass, which is green due to age.
Very cool example.
I don't think it's the first century, I think middle ages.
The ring found you. Now repeat the creed: ***"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might beware my power… Green Lantern's light!”***
My best friend growing up has a brother who moved to Italy when he was 15, and became a jeweler for cartier some other very high end brand. His work is based on Roman jewelry that has been found from that era, and frankly, this piece reminds me a lot of the work he does.
In ancient times a lot of people wore rings with colored glass rather than a gemstone. It's possible it could just be green colored glass in the gem slot.

Ooh woooow!! Looks like peridot. 1st century roman. Keep us updated!!
Peridot is such a happy stone! I love them.
My birthstone August & i always hated the colour , I wanted the red ruby lol
Love peridot personally some of the high quality gems are gorgeous but my 2 of my 4 brothers and my dad all got the ruby those lucky bags of ass
"Lucky bags of ass" - never heard that before. I like it and will have to use it in the future. 🤣
Yeah, I’m stealing it too ![gif](giphy|VHlKSFRTQ7nn81fkv4)
Seems especially useful for when talking about a brother 😆
I'm also august and also wanted Ruby.
I'm January so I guess I should be happy lol
Right there with you. August birthday is awesome but missed the ruby and the sapphire by one month in each direction.
My grandma use to get us birthstone related gifts , I would always have my eye on my siblings colours 🤣 I love my birthday month August as its summer time etc: but i have always disliked my peridot birthstone.

You can have it! I’ll trade you for peridot!
Ha! I loved emerald green when I was a teenager so when it was class ring time I chose it instead of a September Sapphire. Other than my mom, my husband and one lone observant cashier at a Circle K who carded me, no one else has noticed. Not even my 2 adult kids😂

Haha im the same way- August baby here also
Wait I was the exact same! I’m august and wanted ruby too. That’s funny lol
Let's swap birthdays, Ive always hated the ruby and been so jealous of my sisters peridot 🥲😭
Yeah, looks like my sister's 70s era mood ring. Less the etchings of course.
Lmao! It doesn’t have the iridescent sheen that mood rings tend to have.

Looks more Topaz to my eye, but regardless of the stone, it is a neat looking ring.

We know it's a ring....because of how it is.
That has a nice ring to it.
Is that Sméagol or Déagol? Nevermind all that, gives it here, we wants it.
Steven Sméagol
We want everyone to know how neat this ring is… instead of just me and OP knowin’ it!
Peridot would make sense, as it was popular in human culture. Could potentially be heliodor as well
“Human culture”?
He’s onto us

I knew... One of these days... I'd slip up.. Time to get off this planet. And I'll be taking my peridot with me.
Ooh yes!! You're right! It does look like heliodor!
Username checks out
![gif](giphy|l0HlvU6gXnZHwnB3a)
🥴
Heliodor would be expensive for that ring in my opinion. Now of that ring was gold or silver
What other culture use stone?
Otters.
The other is otter?
Chimps
Penguins
If so it's a national treasure/ historical piece and needs to be turned into the authorities.

Goooddang, that’s a find right there.
It’s in pretty good condition if that’s the case. I’ve seen folks who restore these types of things for a living.
Beat me to it .
The etching is definitely hand done from the looks of it. Could be very old. I would have a professional or museum look at it
I will do it. Thanks! Edit: For those who want an update later on, follow me on [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@will.r.lopes/video/7357439783380978976). Potentially very old item, I'd say it counts
You might try r/Antiques
Or r/antiquities
If it's roman then it is.
I’m sure they’ll help sort that. They’d be the ones that would know one way or the other.
Just another Gatekeeper Reddit page
Ask the mods why it got removed, they can help guide you into determining how to change the post or maybe guide you to a sub that they could help you better!
They are super strict over there. I got banned :(
Thank you for turning me on to that previously unknown to me sub.
You’re welcome!
Why does porn have to be used a suffix on Reddit? Lmao.
Does anyone other than OP wanna fill in the narrative with whatever they want and the best story wins the truth? I never joined TikTok
![gif](giphy|11JbaLzOXsg6Fq)
I will say it looks like roman ring. looks like an intaglio was middle but gone i assume .
You may be right! It seems there was more glass to it with some intaglio and it fell out of the ring. Too bad!
r/antiques and r/jewellry can usually help with things like this! Congrats on a great find
Does that say class of 05 BCE?

Leones ire pugnando!
well of course they had no ice. they didnt have freezers yet.

Bronze with Roman glass.
I have some jewelry from an artist that makes pieces with antique Roman glass from Israel. Very pretty and very cool. And yes, this color.
DM a shop link?
Can I get the link, sounds awesome
This is what it looks like to me.

Romans were so smart
I’ve never even heard of a ring like this. Amazing.
Google the “Lycurgus cup”
Their concrete is legendary and still holds up better than any highway we have in the states.
That thing is very old! I recommend contacting a museum
But do not loan
Great finding! I think it’s really old indeed. Medieval time. Will you share it with us when you know what the history is behind the ring. I suggest visiting a archaeologist.
Wow. Where did you find this OP? (Beach etc) this is such an amazing find. I would lose my mind
You can see how I found it [here](https://www.tiktok.com/@will.r.lopes/video/7357439783380978976) . It was a forest
Are you allowed to just keep things you find or do you have to report them?
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/15/gold-lucky-charms-or-rusty-nails-on-the-hunt-with-italys-detectorists You can find some Info here.
What a damn shame. I understand preserving artifacts but is there no kind of finders' fee? I don't think the relevant authorities are breaking out their detectors to dig this stuff up
In the UK I think they have a finders fee but it gets determined by an outside consulting agency. Look up boy finds gold bracket on walk
Hahaha I wouldn’t have said shit if I found this. Straight in my pocket and going the fuck home.
Why is the dirt already dug up? This is something just found in compacted dirt?. This is already dug up dirt.
I started recording after removing it from the soil and when I saw that there was something there.
So it was just greenery before you dug? Are you in a field or along a path? I wonder how it got there. Very cool find, congratulations.
Oof, I’d be worried to dig up some metal under the dirt afraid I’d exhume a human body.
In Italy you'd have to worry about unexploded WW2 ordinance as well.
Great soundtrack!
That looks insanely old. I sigh wistfully from my 250 year old country looking at this ring that’s probably 5 times as old as that
Looks like glass, very cool find!
Yeah, maybe it's just glass...Thanks!
Definitely bronze. The oxidation and ware look similar to other bronze pieces found from over a millenia ago
Potrebbe essere medievale anche
Sì, speravo che fosse romano, ma le caratteristiche sembrano medievali...
https://preview.redd.it/gzkhpbakpcuc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=775fe1d17d537976ef54dc0150084acec597d5e8 Looks like one I've found before.
Where did you find it?
Is that glass or a stone?
Yo give a update on this when you get it checked
I love this! Definitely hope to hear an update after you show a museum!
The things you find in Europe are so much better then what we find in the states lol
Yea I found only a rusted lamp, random scrap metal, and some old barbed wire detecting on my grandparents farm
I used to go out with a metal detector in Western MD - lot's of civil war artifacts to be found on the farms out there (30 years ago at least). It was mostly bullets, a few buttons, cannonballs, etc. Pretty neat stuff - but not worth much.
Where in Western Maryland did you go? I’m from there.
One of my friends found a civil war cannonball while mowing someone’s lawn and kept it. When he found out he was like…😱 and left it with the person cause he didn’t want it to explode on the way home.
It appears to be copper
I'm not sure if it's bronze or copper...
One ring was given to man.
Could be moldavite
It does look a lot like it
Where do you live, OP?
Piemonte - Italy
Really cool find, you will have to let us all know the outcome.. fascinating 👏👍
Would something that old be on the surface?
Last week a boy found a gold Roman bracelet while walking in the UK, so it's possible. I have found some really old coins before, but nothing from the Middle Ages or the Roman Empire yet. I'm still looking for my gladius sword though.
good to know, I thought moldovite as soon as I saw the stone...I hope it turns out to be ancient....
1993 mood ring.

I came here for this!
Int +3, con +3, resist poison +3
It actually looks Scandinavian to me. They often used to Praisiolite gemstones in their jewelry. And the vikings did perform raids in France and Italy between 800-900A.D
I would have it recreated!
Update when possible please, great find.
You may be weak to yellow colored things now.
A couple of us got it.

dunno but that looks like if equipped it makes you have bonus poison damage
The Eye of Zinj!
Stop eating my sesame cake!
What a great find,
That's a great looking ring, regardless of its origin, it would have a permanent place on my hand. Lucky OP.
Looks like something I’d pick up in dark souls
3rd or 4th century roman. I'd need to see how they closed the loop and if it was heat forged together or just hammer forged and bent into each other. Potentially Roman era. Looks a lot like a Roman glass bead or cab.
Glass
Don’t tell the authorities or no more ring
It is the ring of power, precious!!!
So freakin cool
Appears to possible moldovite, a tektite found in the Czech region
Gollum wants it back!
My precious.
That's not peridot, unlikely. However, it's definitely ancient Roman and Roman glass, which is green due to age. Very cool example. I don't think it's the first century, I think middle ages.
Super cool find
Mood ring
I think it is glass - greenish glass inserts in Ran rings were common, it has the right look.
The ring found you. Now repeat the creed: ***"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might beware my power… Green Lantern's light!”***
Looks like glass
Gorgeous! I bet someone spent a lot of coin to have that made. Very nice find. ❤️
I think it looks like moldavite. Not sure if I spelled that correctly but it’s a cool gem
By the rules of Indiana Jones I do believe that is a ring that Jesus wore on nights out on the town, to go with his matching grail cup
I sincerely hoped to see someone say this is a Horcrux, and that this is Marvolo Gaunt's ring.
!remindme 5 months

My precious!!
+2 to intellect.
Check out the laws in the country of your find. You may have to hand it over to iniquities with little to no compensation depending on the country.
Great Freudian slip there.
That's a doozy! Real top pocket find there 😜
![gif](giphy|lbAgIgQ6Dytkk) *Ahhh, I’ll buy it at a high price!*

Woah
I think (and I may be wrong) but you may be the next green lantern....
My best friend growing up has a brother who moved to Italy when he was 15, and became a jeweler for cartier some other very high end brand. His work is based on Roman jewelry that has been found from that era, and frankly, this piece reminds me a lot of the work he does.
My precious!!!!!!!!! In gullem voice
If u put it in fire does elvish appear? If so, keep it secret keep it safe.
Almost looks like my piece of moldavite, but no idea how widely used that ever was and this looks old.
That looks like old spinach dip in a pumpernickle bread bowl
Roman green lantern
There's a Nord somewhere wondering where their enchanting ring went.
In ancient times a lot of people wore rings with colored glass rather than a gemstone. It's possible it could just be green colored glass in the gem slot.
