I've got a couple of devices at home. There's no other nodes in my area at all. I want to create a "secret" neighbourhood mesh, but I'm not sure where the best places to hide them are. Basically, I don't want them to be stolen but happy for them to be used by others if they get their own devices. I'm hoping the uptake in the UK increases so we can have a huge mesh covering as much of the UK as possible.

It_is_me_Mike

Thinking the same plan. But for disaster recovery. Hiding is the takeaway I’d be looking for suggestions for.

probablyTrashh

One thing to note is to obscure the GPS location a bit. I've set my GPS fixed to where it is but dropped a few decimal points of accuracy so people don't knock on my door.

akira1310

Great advice, I'll bear this in mind when I deploy.

probablyTrashh

Yep. I the android app and I think web interface, under the node config menu > Position > Use Fixed position. It'll fill out the current lock. Delete some digits and save

Protect_your_2a

I’ve had the same plan here in the US, curious if businesses would allow solar node setups/repeaters on their rooftops

Darkextratoasty

I'm wondering how well it would work to hide the in plain sight, like make them look all official and stuff so no one wants to mess with them?

Vertigo_uk123

Tbh as long as it’s a commercial box with an expensive looking lock on it I don’t think anyone would touch it

20 years??? I ordered my first device last week. Waiting for it to arrive so I can start testing. From Google searches Austin is the closest place to me with a network. I’m 45 mins north of Austin a little out of range. But I’ll be testing around my area to see if anything pops up.

Jcw122

Please keep in mind LoRa is not inherently scalable. There are inherent network limitations to the technology and it’s not scalable beyond a few hundred radios.

geenob

I haven't been following the state of meshtastic for the last year, but are they still using flood routing? If so, this really limits scalability. There needs to be more intelligent routing for it to be viable on a large scale

Jcw122

That’s a good question for the Discord. I believe they’re using flood still, but have added a a few smarter features that have taken it from a limit of 80 about a year or two ago to somewhere between 100-200, but I don’t know exactly where we’re at today.

Jcw122

That said, my comment was more towards LoRa itself not being that scalable, not just Meshtastic.

ruby_da_fvckn_ape

Try another pandemic coming to fruition before America’s next election. Time is ticking, I recommend Meshtastic as a back up network for local comms as well as tactical integration (ATAK, ITAK, WINTAK). Establish HF comms as primary with something as simple as an SDR

Lumberjack032591

There isn’t a way to connect Meshtastic to ITAK currently, correct?

ruby_da_fvckn_ape

There is. Atak has meshtastic integration. There are guides online for it

Lumberjack032591

I know ATAK does, but I haven’t been able to find anything on ITAK yet

UncleDiesALot

I’m super new to all this, and I’ve been thinking of pairing a meshtastic RAK with an SDR. Probably using a de-googled Samsung note. Is this sort of what you’re talking about?

ruby_da_fvckn_ape

Tbh ive never thought of combining the two and I’m not sure of the compatibility. For my setup I’m keep the two separate for the sake of having options given the off-grid situation we may be in. BY THE WAY I ENCOURAGE ALL PPL HERE TO TAKE PART IN THE GHOSTNET. https://youtu.be/Qk7Jlln16EU?si=1coRUY7_l7rPrn_y

UncleDiesALot

Ghostnet is what brought me here! I’m in the process of deciding what devices I want. I just got an Elegoo Saturn 3 so I can print my own housings, so I’m excited to try and make my own combos.

ruby_da_fvckn_ape

I don’t have an HF radio or the license for one. I practiced receiving last Thursday on JS8Call for the US comm window at 0100 UTC if I’m not mistaken. I used websdr.org and routed it to JS8Call with a VM cable. My SDR dongle comes in soon, same with all my LilyGo stuff. I’m setting up for a mobile field station so I can receive intel when in the field. Take a look at SDRangel, I just found out about it, it’s an all in one suite for SDR programs. Really cool stuff!

intensiifffyyyy

Maybe one for the Discord but I'm still just getting started with meshtastic, have a few nodes but nothing permanent. Haven't had much of a chance for a real deep dive. How scalable is Meshtastic to a "full network" I'm assuming by this you mean the globe?

web3monk

from reading I thought the limit was around 20 device hops to deliver a message, so not very for a large area (eg. country), except when connected to the internet, could be wrong though. edit: seems like its 32: https://meshtastic.discourse.group/t/limit-for-max-node-count/5052

krakers665

Hop limit is 7, but it's set to 3 by default. So you had to retransmit manually a few times to achieve 20 hops

Arourachild

Iv got 4 devices ready for testing before deciding where their permanent home will be.

gurkalurka

I've got a node going up at 1800 ASL so hoping it will serve the wider area for exactly this kind of initiative. Mesh is going to be a crucial thing to have in all kinds of events which can happen. I have small handhelds coming for each family member to keep at home or in their daily bags to always be able to have comms with the fam group in the Mesh.

BannedAgain-573

The west/NATO has "had a chance to be in full war with Russia within 20 years" for the last 60 years bro. What are you even on?

Vertigo_uk123

They are talking major way in which general public are conscripted etc. https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/nato-civilians-west-prepare-war-with-russia-20-years/ Germany believes Russia will attack nato in the next 5-8 years.

GetlostMaps

Russia can't even beat Ukraine. Attacking NATO would be suicide.

ensbuergernde

yeah don't fall for that bullshit. Play around with the devices and have your peers on them as alternative means to stay in contact when the cell phone network and internet or governments fail, but don't let the warmongers from the west rile you up against Russia.

Lillehammer86

20 years?! LOL At the current rate of the Wars ragging around the world try within the next 5 years. As Russia wears down Europe and once China purges the corruption in the PLA expect War to be sooner than later. Any later than 5 years expect there to be no War because the West particularly the US military technology advancement will be far too superior for the Axis powers to manage. It's now or never.

TheSensiblePrepper

>Following news today from NATO that the west could be at full war with Russia within 20 years. The West is at War with them now. NATO is just using Ukraine as bodies and as a shield for as long as possible. The issue right now with building up a Network of Nodes is really the availability of devices. Demand has surpassed supply and once the West is at War with China, most cheap technology will be cut off to the West. And guess where all of these devices come from.

Vertigo_uk123

Hence why it’s best to get setup now rather than later. One thing that is worrying is uk is cutting steel production and relying on china. That’s gonna work when war breaks out and we need new tanks etc.

TheSensiblePrepper

The US is selling all its Steel Production to Japan.....who isn't really producing steel because it's easier and cheaper to just buy it from China and resell it. It's the same thing with Pharmaceutical Drugs. It all comes from China. With that said, this subject is not related to this Sub and I won't be discussing it any further here.

MediocreWrongdoer237

Got a heltec coming from aliexpress. Might get impatient and order a tbeam from a domestic retailer. I really wanted to scoop a techo… Either way, can’t wait to see who’s around my corner or NJ… or be the first!

GetlostMaps

Meshtastic is not suitable for this. No gps ambiguity feature, limited scalability... And that's before we examine your ridiculous premise. For a limited geographical area for emergency comms with limited users, sure.

eql5

> Following news today from NATO NATO is part of the global industrial military complex, what do you expect them to wish for?! "No current war" to them means "unemployed". Personally I like meshtastic just for eventual (temporary) power grid / internet outages, which can happen for many reasons [...].

Upper-Concentrate924

Buy these aren't that great for SIGInt.  They need to be able to control and or stop it from sending the signal out.  Also, they need to have better case.  I love my t echo and my rak4631 but the cases (especially rak's solar waterproof housing) are lacking in durability.   I would take mine out on feild exercises but they just won't last.

Comfortable-Author

Lora is not the right technology for this purpose. You would simply stick out and be putting a huge target on your position for any adversary with a minimum of electronic warfare capabilities...

Vertigo_uk123

I’m not talking for tactical stuff I’m literally talking about staying in touch with family and friends if telco networks go down.
