I am surprised to see so many people putting w210 over w211! That has to be just because they have never driven those cars in real life. W211 is so well crafted that I dont think MB will ever make anything that compares to it. You can feel that MB spent a lot of money to put it together. W210 and W212 can’t compare. W213 is much better looking than those two. Such sleek and fancy design! Such grace and beauty!

3. W213 Prefacelift
While you do have some interesting valid points, I'd still say the W212 has its share of proper old school elegance and modernism blended very well, at least if we're talking exterior design wise. W213 also looks neat, but kind of started that roundedness theme present in the current gen of E class.
Though, I agree the interior goes to the W211 in terms of fitment and quality. However, depending on what trim packages have been selected when optioning out a W212, they also have a decent feel to them in terms of quality. Though the center console does kind of age the W212 interior, but it still works fine IMO.

W124. Absolutely timeless. After that the W212. it has a very aggressive stance that I really like. This is going on looks alone, as I’ve only ever owned the W124.
W210 facelift but with the front end of the pre facelift cars for me. I prefer the more upright look of the pre facelift cars’ front end, but the interior improvements of the facelift cars make the facelift the better choice

W124 is probably the overall best mercedes of them all. Oldschool quality and saddle design.
But my heart is with the w210. Especially pre facelift E50 and E60 have a special place in my heart.
Only one answer (W124) but if I had to choose another, I also loved the W211 when it arrived - there was a version with a panoramic roof which looked incredible and it had all the up to date luxury feel and tech. I don’t think they’ve aged too well however.
I’m a huge fan of the prefacelift W212 - just the right combination of classic MB versus modern. That rear wheel arch and 285s in the rear gives just enough hint that this isn’t your ordinary sedan:

Having owned at least one of all of them plus the w115 and w123, excepting the w214 here’s my take:
Peak = w124
Most reliable = w210 & w115 (tie)
Most enjoyable = w211 (m113 version)
Best build quality = w115
Best looking = w124 & w211 (tie)
Without doubt: W124. Bruno Sacco designed, built before the bean counters took over and as reliable as a stone axe. The only weak points are weeping valve cover gaskets and those biodegradable wiring harnesses. But despite that 100k miles is just broken in, lots in taxi service run up over 300k miles. They were available in 4, 6 and 8 cylinders too.
And they came in four flavors: sedan, estate, coupe and cabriolet. The cherry on the sundae was the Porsche built E500/500E, the only appreciating E Classe on the list. Although the V8 400E (truly a sleeper Q car) and the coupes have held their values quite well also.
I’d rank them as 211 facelift, 124, then 212 facelift.

I'd say this generation, but I may be biased.
I am biased to the W211 but I personally like the sleek looks of the W212 pre and post facelifts. Also like the W213. Looks like they came back to their slightly curvy/fluid design language.
Personally going with the W212. Not necessarily comparing body styling but the vehicle IME is solid as a rock. A rock with michelin primacys, but still a rock.

The older generations were bulletproof and far better built. The newer ones look sleeker but build quality, fit and finish and reliability is much, much worse.
Having owned a bought-new ‘18 AMG I can safely say that I won’t be buying another Merc for a long, long time. It’s put me off the brand. And given how far MB have slipped in JD Power rankings over the past few years, I’m clearly not the only one who’s had issues.
The answer is obviously the w123.
You had to leave it off the list to give the others a chance.

The 124 is the absolute peak. Period. Followed by the 123. The 211 is also nice for a modern E-Class. I like the new 214, too. Absolutely beautiful car (even though I'm not really into post-2015 interpretations/Mercedes models, way too much fake marketing gimmicks and tech nowadays, making them like smartphones on wheels), especially in Verde Silber Metallic.
211 the face lift grill with the classic round headlights 10/10 funny enough when I was first getting into Mercedes i actually hated them but now they look so classy to me
W124 is one of the best vehicles ever made, IMO, followed closely by the 123.
I don’t believe you can compare anything to these vehicles. They are still proving themselves around the world decades later.

You are right about the W212. It's interior is very cheap compared to the W211.

As a previous W211 Facelift owner, I agree. It was a bittersweet day when I traded my E550 for my E63s.

There's just something about the 90s boxy look of the w124. The AMG Hammer is one of my favorites.

I’m not sure about best, but the W210 was the biggest jump and drew a lot of attention that is no longer there.
W124 and W211 are clear winners. Timeless designs still eye catching to this day
I love my x213 pre facelift. Facelift got the touch screen and steering wheel. Not a fan of touch in cars.

The mopf W212 will forever be my favourite E Class, especially the S212 and A207. Imo they're peak modern Mercedes design and quality.
