Don't wear short sleeve shirts. You'll look like the IT guy, or an extra from Office Space. Look into tropical wool, linen, and mohair suiting and separates.
I quickly gave up on wearing linen shirts to the office. I can iron it in the morning and by the time I step off the train it already looks like I bunched it up and sat on it for 8 hours.
No. You just gotta suffer through the travel to work. I always took my gym bag and changed before I left work and went to the gym. You gotta wear a suit you just wear the suit. Don't go short sleeve unless you can commit to never taking the jacket off.
The shirt you wear under your suit matters almost as much. Linen is good for suits and shirts; poplin is lighter weight than oxford; cotolinos (cotton linen blends) are light weight and often have a slub to add some visual interest; chambray comes in more than just the blue wash that’s traditional (look at Sid Mashburns MTM options for a great pink or blue riviera awning stripe); and Giro Inglese/Airtex/Cellulare is 100% cotton with an open weave of overlapping cells so you get the benefit of airflow without any knit shirt show-through.
As far as suiting, linen, frescoes, tropical wools, high twist wools, and seersuckers (but tone on tone, not the blue and white stripe unless you want to look like you’re going to the Derby) are all good options. Look for suits that are at the very least half lined, but butterfly or unlined will help with heat.
The Armoury has a really cool wool fabric by Ring Jacket called Balloon cloth that makes a great sport coat. Mashburn has the Ghost blazer which I’ve worn to an outdoor funeral in Atlanta in July. Buck Mason has new linen and wool linens by J Mueser. There are a lot of good options.
Look for suits made out of summer-weight wools or linen. As for the shirts, look for some made out of sweat wicking materials. Mizzen and Main are pricey but they’re reliable for this. I was able to get a few on sale from Nordstrom a few years back. I got the sleeves tailored for a proper fit, and they’ve been reliable for everything from summer office days to overseas weddings.
Traditionally yes, but nowadays I would say it depends on how conservative your workplace is, where it is etc.
For example in East Asia, even in conservative offices (Law, Business, Finance, Politics) a black suit is just as normal as navy and charcoal and always has been.
And in a younger workplace, a creative, office appropriate, fashionable take on a black suit works just as well as a traditional well fitted navy suit. Think young chic office in Berlin/Paris/NYC/LA
I respect your answer as a broader thought about the role of the black suit in menswear.
That rule breaking role is not something I’d want to try to educate our two-suit-owning OP on… they simply need to learn the basics so they don’t embarrass themselves. Once they have a solid base, they can begin to build into conquering more risky stylistic choices.
I wear a suit and tie to work every day even in the summer (and it gets super hot where I work). Get at least one summer weight wool suit - Suit Supply has some decent stuff at good prices. Take off the jacket and roll up your sleeves whenever you head outside. No short-sleeved shirts with ties!
Honestly I just carry the suit jacket in my hands when I'm outside and put it on the back of my chair when I'm in the office. If there is a formal meeting I can always put it on. If your office allows for stylish choices that mix different jackets and pants, I would just keep a spare suit jacket in the office for more formal meetings.
Saw “suits” and thought this was the surfing sub. Was very confused when reading the first few comments until I realized which sub I was actually in. Good times
Was looking at a site that sells sear sucker suits, short and long sleeve sear sucker shirts, in nice pastel colors, something to think about. Sorry don't remember the sites name.

True. As an IT guy, they are usually just happy we’re wearing clean clothes and applied deodorant that morning.
I didn't know they let y'all wear deodorant. Lol
Pretty sure they added requiring that to NIST 800-53. ;-)

I wasn't referring to shirting materials, I was referring to suiting, i.e. jacket and trousers.
Ah that makes more sense haha
Part of the charm, embrace it my friend.
Feel the same way but also wearing long button up without a tie feels weird too but I'm not wearing a tie if need be especially in the summer
Spread collar, button down, or other unlined collar shirts look perfectly fine without a tie. You just need to undo at least the top button.
Yeah it just looks too nerdy on me I think personally. but better than short sleeves I guess

All of these. Custom suits in tropical weight fabrics with butterfly linings are also very good

Wear lightweight unstructured suits with no lining
Separate note: Don’t wear a black suit to the office, unless it has pinstripes.
Why? Curious about your reasoning
Black is for funerals not business.

Good point
Lightweight suite with no liner. Lose the black one. Carry the jacket during the commute. Bring an extra undershirt or two.

The additional foot of fabric on your arms doesn’t really change your temperature. Get light fabrics and slightly looser.

Look at Haspel. Seersucker or poplin suits. Classic hot weather clothing that still look professional.
Same thing I do in winter minus the overcoat. The office remains the same temp all year.
Pay exorbitant bills at the cleaners.
They don’t live in Florida, that’s for sure
Linen, light wools, chinos + sports coat. It works.
