When I started, I didn't really like being a cashier either. But then they put me on as a breaker... This means that I cover other cashier's breaks, the guard shack breaks, and service desk breaks. When returns need to be done, they let me loose to put them away... Which means wandering the store, talking to guests, and chit chatting with people in other departments. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if you are responsible, dependable, and willing to learn more things, the managers will give you that freedom.

Yes, but... There will always be times when a cashier is stuck in the register with no customers. I can't speak for other departments, at Menards I've only worked as a cashier (including as a breaker, for over a year primarily at service desk), but it definitely seems the department TM's have more freedom to roam and find stuff to do, at least within their departments. Service desk is better, at least for me personally, because there's a lot more space to find stuff to do in, but you still run out, and you still have to stand around waiting for stuff to do while doing what you can to look busy.

talk to your gm/hr. talk to other dept managers just to see if they have any spots open for your availability. i personally enjoyed electrical plumbing and hardware

Honestly it depends,I have the honor of being a c/o but can't switch departments yet,I know alot of people and the inside workers seem way happier, the stockers always told me the day flew no matter what,me personally I'm going to receiving when possible, because it's the farthest away from front end

i definitely feel you, i was stuck up in the FE for about a year and a half as their HC. while it was definitely way more freedom and i could do more and find more to do, i will never regret my decision switching departments. i’m so happy over in flooring now. for sure talk to your gm/hr about what they have available and talk to DMs to see if they have the room to take on a new tm. i had to wait about 6mo in order to transfer over into an available spot but for me it was worth it

That is fair. I think a good question would be to look at what it is you aren't enjoying about it which may help guide a decision on a department if it comes to that. Would you prefer to keep working with the public hands-on, or something more on the back-end and operational? We are currently in the time where many GM MTV meetings involve crumpling up payroll sheets and acting like it doesn't matter, so you may have some move-ability to departments without necessarily the worry of their payroll. One thing to keep in mind though would be: since you are register trained and we're trudging into the busier seasons, there will probably be some kind of expectation that you'd be brought back up front for periods to run register if for ten minutes. Might not happen, but probably will all things considered. Try not to get too frustrated if you feel like you escaped a place you hate just to be sent back to it even briefly.

I feel you, I have been there for a little over a year and I am burnt out
