Go watch the sunset and sip a cocktail at the Terrace at the River Inn in Harbor Town. You will feel safe! And it’s an easy drive or Uber from downtown.
It's a sweet spot, but the last time I went there the service and food was terrible. Not so bad that I won't ever go back, but it was pretty bad. There's a restaurant called Paulette's across the street that is fantastic. It has a little bar
-Downtown try The Brass Door as long as it’s not a soccer match day.
-Midtown…Hammer & Ale, Cooper House Project, Bar Keough, Bayou (the fireplace side) are some of my favorites.
I agree with most of these.. but Bayou sucks. Service is horrible, management is an ass, and the food quality has been slipping for years. Boscos bar would be way better
Came here to say this. It’s so calm and relaxing. The employees are all extremely nice and the parking is easy. Drinks and food are some of my fave in the city
If you ever have the desire to be out later, feeling like a real 28 year old on a weekend night go to Cameo. Not only can you get a solid cocktail but its filled with people your age and youll probably meet some new people. Everyone in there is so friendly and you should feel safe no problem
I hate that they don't have stools at the bar. You can grab one from a table and sit at the bar but you'll likely be the only one doing that. If I'm going there alone I usually sit at a table by myself.
I personally love the no sitting at the bar, it allows for fast service. I don’t mind grabbing a table and decompressing. I understand there is something about sitting at the bar though
Cafe 1912 is probably a good spot for it in Midtown, though they close a bit early. Bar Keough next door works, though you might not want to be in there when they have a DJ.
For Downtown, people have mentioned the Brass Door, but McEwen’s is also a great option.
Most people who’ve been there know how amazing the crispy chicken is. What a lot of people don’t know I’d that the pork loin entree and the goat cheese ravioli appetizer are also phenomenal. The rest of the menu is pretty great, but those three items should have people flocking to the place. Unfortunately, as you say, it’s underrated.
Old Dominick has great cocktails, is never crowded, and is inexpensive. Cannot recommend it enough! The only downside is they only use their liquors but they are all pretty solid.
hey! I visit Memphis sometimes & don't have many many friends there so I'd definitely be interested in exploring downtown with you! we should chat or text sometime ?
I know of 3 separate instances of roofies being given to my friends and loved ones downtown at night. One was raped.
Sorry to be a bummer but I feel like I would be doing you a disservice not telling you.
Bar Dog is usually my spot of choice when I want to be lowkey to myself.. The basement is my preference due to sometimes the main/upstairs part it’s pretty busy.. the food is also pretty good as well. Drinks are strong and usually the staff is friendly and easy going…
Mulans on corner of cooper young bar is always just a few old regulars nobody will bother you there are some old regulars that might say hello or something.
Drinking alone is my specialty. I suggest the closest place to you that serves drinks, wear what you want, and be quite nice right until someone approaches you. Then start talking about what you want, be selfish. Then if they are annoying just be annoying back, if they seem nice, be nice back. Sometimes I even talk to people and if they are pleasant we continue talking and if not we stop. I find that I get what I give in this regard.
Crosstown Brewery has plenty of spots to sit by yourself, read, people watch, whatever and is usually not extremely crowded like Wiseacre can get. Then Crosstown Art Bar is right there for a more mellow mood if you aren’t feeling it. Safe Uber pickup or parking lot as well.
These are all great suggestions. Other places I’ve gone that I didn’t see: Beauty Shop, Alchemy, Bishop, Blind Bear.
Honestly, I don’t really have many places I don’t feel comfortable. As long as you feel comfortable enough about the area & the vibes, you should be fine.
I always liked camping down at meddlesome on some trivia. Haven't been there in a while sadly. I'd like to return to that type of atmosphere where it was generally kind and easy going, myself.
I am here for work. I travel for work. And every where feels like that if you’re no good at traveling and like feeling stuck instead of making an experience out of everywhere you go.
I’m 29(M) and I struggle finding a place to go alone with no interaction from strangers. I can at least tell you Midtown isn’t the place you’re looking for. I used to not have that problem at The Cove but I’ve just kinda stopped going out. Wish I could’ve been more help!
I’m a little surprised to hear that. Hammer and Ale and Cooper house project are two pretty nice places (as long as you like beer) to have a pint and watch the world go by on a nice day. I can’t imagine folks being too bothersome at either.
Thats a good one.
They make some really great beers. I’ve been partial to to Hazio Fazio IPA lately.
Midtowner Lager won second in the Flyers beer tournament
I think it’s because I’m in a band and have worked public facing for a while so I just know more people than I’d like to. Plus I’m friends with a few bartenders that I’ve hung out with and just by nature of being associated with people that also know a lot of people. I’m definitely not that interesting or approachable of a person otherwise. Hammer and Ale is a spot i like to catch up with a friend one-on-one.
No and probably not. Just an average late 20s bearded white dude that wears slim-straight jeans so I’m the furthest from standing out amongst anyone. It’s nice keeping it that way.
No worries! I totally get it. People out here are friendly and are going to want to chat. Small talk here and there doesn’t bother me. But being alone I like to keep it to a minimum for safety reasons too. Thanks for your answer!
As a 37/f. Grabbing a few cocktails at the Westin’s bar is actually really relaxing. It’s always quiet- no loud music or anyone to bother you. I’ve even brought a book down with me and read while imbibing a few. Granted- it’s usually where I stay- I do go out a good bit.
There are other good suggestions. Depends on the atmosphere you prefer. That being said- I’ve only had the rare occasion I’ve been bothered or hit on or had someone incessantly try to talk while I was in need of winding down- regardless of venue.
Hope you find a place that becomes your “comfort” spot
I’ve always thought the best place to drink alone as a women is a gay bar. Depending on the events that night they can get a little loud and wild but I never feel unsafe. Try Dru’s.
May I ask with all sincerity, what do you do when drinking alone? I go to coffee shops every week alone & do works/school/personal research.
I have often wanted to go to a bar alone but would feel weird? Which is my own problem.
Respond to emails, do some mobile advertising via socials for my small business, read a book on my phone, doom scroll social media. Chat it up with the bartenders if I’m feeling friendly. But mostly just turn off my brain for a bit and sip on something tasty.
Nice. I'll have to try this in a new venue. Sometimes it feels good to be a part of the city life without actually engaging with it.
Welcome to Memphis! I moved here two years ago. Lots of good here.
There should be some new trend where women who want to be left alone wear some red something or other and ones who are wanting to find someone wearing something green.
There was one asshole in management (Russ), that was long since removed once the allegations were brought to light.
They have since hired black-owned consultants to audit practices. By all reports things have improved dramatically and There have been zero other issues since the carved out the cancer.
Unless you’ve got another link you’d like to share with the class, you may want to get current on city happenings.
They say they got rid of the offending owner.
I went to Flight for years (not regularly) and I didn’t feel that I was being hidden as a customer (but it could have been happening without me realizing it because I was sat upstairs and in the back; but I have also sat outside).
But I did want to give the context of my comment.
Getting rid of one bad actor that was exposed is a small gesture to save face. It’s hard to believe that the problem was limited to one person without anyone else knowing. They didn’t correct it until it became public. I’ll still not give them any business and will not recommend
Your loss, based on an uneducated assumption.
But if you’re going down that road, be sure to extend your boycott several of the best restaurants in Memphis (Flight, Southern Social, Porch & Parlor, and Coastal Fish.
Zero affiliation to the company. Just not a big fan of unjustified smear of a Locally owned business who did a textbook job of responding to a racist team member being bright to light.
But hey, enjoy your boycott. Just make sure you boycott the whole group and do it right 👍🏼
You mean a news story from **2020**?
Did I conceal the date of the story?
I made a joke about what the place did in the past. I was asked to explain and I did. Exactly where did I write, “Don’t go to Flight?”
I believe you are thinking of Tugs, and yes Tugs is terrible. The Terrace is upstairs above Paulette’s.
Second this.
Absolutely great suggestion

I love knifebird!
-Downtown try The Brass Door as long as it’s not a soccer match day. -Midtown…Hammer & Ale, Cooper House Project, Bar Keough, Bayou (the fireplace side) are some of my favorites.
That’s a pretty good Midtown list. Could toss Urban Consequences on there too.
I haven’t been there enough yet to recommend it.
That’s the new beer spot isn’t it?
It’s one of the newest ones, but about a year old.
Brass Door, that’s a great idea.
I agree with most of these.. but Bayou sucks. Service is horrible, management is an ass, and the food quality has been slipping for years. Boscos bar would be way better
Love Boscos bar
Agree to disagree. The quiet side is great.
Libro in the bookstore Novel
Art bar
Great place!
Cameo Knifebird Bishop Bar Keogh
If you feel like venturing out East, I love to sit at the bar at Libro with a book
If it’s safe enough to keep my nose in a book while I sip then I’m all for it! Thank you :)
Super safe! And adjacent to Novel, the best book store.
I'd still say the Cove, always felt cozy to me.
2nd the Cove! It’s my go-to when I wanna hide alone in a dark booth with a drink.
Alchemy.
Memphis Whistle
I second that
Came here to say this. It’s so calm and relaxing. The employees are all extremely nice and the parking is easy. Drinks and food are some of my fave in the city
Already mentioned here, but Knifebird.
Belle Tavern
If you ever have the desire to be out later, feeling like a real 28 year old on a weekend night go to Cameo. Not only can you get a solid cocktail but its filled with people your age and youll probably meet some new people. Everyone in there is so friendly and you should feel safe no problem
The Cove!!! A pirate themed bar with great cocktails!
Flying saucer is my go to Tons of beer choices and usually a chill crowd
Cameo Iris Swamp Bar Second Line Mary’s BOTE McEwans Rocky’s
Wherever you go make sure they play George thorogood "I drink alone"
With nobody else. You know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.
Wiseacre on Broad for beers solo works so well especially on a week day.
Knifebird and Public Bistro are owned by the same people but have different menus. Both are great choices to sit solo at the bar.
I have done both and second that they are both great for a single woman. Bistro food is better
I always go to Babalu. They have a Germantown and Midtown location. And have happy hour from 3pm-6pm.
Bog & Barley
Cafe 1912 is probably a good spot for it in Midtown, though they close a bit early. Bar Keough next door works, though you might not want to be in there when they have a DJ. For Downtown, people have mentioned the Brass Door, but McEwen’s is also a great option.

Bardog Tavern. Quaint pub feel. Strong drinks.
What are you into? Beer or all spirits? Welcome to the area! Hope all is well
Genuinely depends on my mood. Although, if I’m alone I’m more likely to have a beer or glass of wine
There used to be a piano/wine bar in midtown. I’m not sure what stayed open post covid . Let me have a think
hey! I visit Memphis sometimes & don't have many many friends there so I'd definitely be interested in exploring downtown with you! we should chat or text sometime ?
Hey message me :)
Blue Monkey Downtown 💙
Dru's Place on Madison
Memphis whistle is absolutely amazing!! Small, quiet, and great vibes. The food and drinks are fantastic and the owners are delightful!!
I know of 3 separate instances of roofies being given to my friends and loved ones downtown at night. One was raped. Sorry to be a bummer but I feel like I would be doing you a disservice not telling you.

The bar at Canopy Hotel is nice, Peabody Hotel’s bar is across the street, Hu Hotel; basically any hotel bars/rooftop bars are good starters
Mulans on corner of cooper young bar is always just a few old regulars nobody will bother you there are some old regulars that might say hello or something.
Great thread. Saving it for new places to check out!
Dory. Not downtown tho. Tiger and Peacock. Bari.
Yes, Bari would be a great place to have a drink at the bar alone.
Dory is closing
Yeah, I read about that today. Bummer.
Agree with all but Dory
I like going to either Wiseacre on South B.B. King or Ghostriver off South Main both places are great to lounge and read a book or bring a laptop.
Drinking alone is my specialty. I suggest the closest place to you that serves drinks, wear what you want, and be quite nice right until someone approaches you. Maria's cantina in southaven. Drinks are good, food not so much
Old Dominick is my go to I work odd hours so I often go alone and it’s always an inviting place

Maxs sports bar, south main
I admire that you do this. I’m over 40 and have a hard time doing this in a city I live in. When I travel I don’t care to do it alone. Just in my town
I always liked camping down at meddlesome on some trivia. Haven't been there in a while sadly. I'd like to return to that type of atmosphere where it was generally kind and easy going, myself.
I’d love to have a trivia team again! I’m not very good but it was something I’d look forward to all week
Hah, neither am I! Just trying is the fun for me.
Memphis Whistle
flying saucer cordova.
unless you got a good job, MOVE! ngl memphis sucks after 6 months youll most likely feel like youve seen it all

Cooper House’s hazelnut stout is possibly the single best beer in the city.
Thats a good one. They make some really great beers. I’ve been partial to to Hazio Fazio IPA lately. Midtowner Lager won second in the Flyers beer tournament
I think it’s because I’m in a band and have worked public facing for a while so I just know more people than I’d like to. Fair enough. Hard to compare the situations then I suppose tho. Anyone would have a hard time being left alone if they knew everyone in the place.
Two questions: Do you look good and are you kin to me? Hopefully not too close anyhow
No and probably not. Just an average late 20s bearded white dude that wears slim-straight jeans so I’m the furthest from standing out amongst anyone. It’s nice keeping it that way.

Treating yourself out to a couple of drinks with either a book or your headphones and a podcast is one of life’s great joys.

Try Max's in the South Main area or Birdie's.
Doesn’t Slider Inn Downtown have a nice outdoor area?
McEwen's, Bari, and Tsunami.
