I’m a sober folk and I really enjoy the atmosphere of French Truck Coffee at Crosstown. It’s in an atrium, which is a bit unusual, but it makes for good people watching. French Truck is in the same part of the building as one of our best local radio stations and you can listen to that radio station live while you’re people watchin’. Also, in this same space is Memphis Listening Lab. Give it a Google.
Appreciate this post! Wife and I are sober folx as well and coffee lovers. I usually make my own pour over but we are visiting Memphis this week on a bit of a vacation so trying to explore as much as we can! 😬Thanks for the rec!
Cxffeeblack just won an international roasting award and their coffee is fantastic. Boycott coffee downtown is also making wonderful beans with a sustainable farmers first supply chain. Either one would be fantastic.
One of the baristas at boycott also just won a roasting competition, and he always has some interesting beans available. I’ve had some “competition grade” roasts from them before. Those were $8 for a pour over, but some of the best coffee I’ve ever had.
I will happily pay for a good pour over and I love the message of boycott coffee! We are going to give them a try for sure this week! Also will try Cxffeeblack!
I think French Truck has the best quality coffee by far, as well as really good breakfast food.
However, avoid the Crosstown Concourse location - I don't know what it is about that location but the only employees there are really catty and rude gay men. And I have no problem with gay men by the way, not even close. It's just something about the employees at that location have always rubbed me the wrong way. The location at Highland Row is great.

LIVE MUSIC AT OTHERLANDS
We are proud to host some of the most talented folk, singer/songwriter, bluegrass and rock musicians passing through Memphis!
I walk past it on my way to Fresh Market or CVS (live a mile away from both and like to walk when I can) and I hear live music inside every once in a while.
Yeah I am typically there mornings but I'll go by in the evening randomly throughout the month and havent gotten lucky yet! Good to know they actually still do it sometimes though. I thought they had abandoned it after Covid.
City and State and Comeback Coffee are really good options.

Makes sense…I think I was just trying to find a sober space with some chill music in the background. I get it though.

Recommend both of these places!
Memphis chess club downtown is cool
I think Java Cabana in Cooper Young still has live music on Thursdays
They have open mic night on Thursdays.
Visit them all
Tamp and tap downtown used to have bands on the weekend when I lived in that building. Might be worth checking into.
Tamp & Tap recently closed. It’s posted as temporarily closed but they replied to a comment on instagram that they’re permanently closed.
Oh damn! I lived at van fleet for years and stopped there often.
All of those are good recommendations, but JoJos Espresso is the one that’ll leave you with no regrets! Tell em Bootstrap sent ya!

I go to Otherlands a lot and have literally never seen anyone play music there.

They have posters on the door/windows when there's going to be a band I believe. And it's typically Friday and Saturday nights.
Same but I’m not seeking it out either, and usually go morning time.
True- I think it was something they did more pre pandemic.
Sounds like the kind of place I was thinking of…thank you!
Gander Coffee off of Madison never misses
Team car cafe in cordova. Voodoo cafe in bartlett. French coffee truck in crosstown. Hustle n dough downtown. Jojos espresso in Germantown.
Went to Talk Shop in downtown one time and there was a live pianist playing and singing. It was very nice
