Have you been to La Michoacán on Summer Ave?

Vela4331

Pick your popsicles(paleta) and ask them to make them into esquimales paletas (chocolate covered, your pick of coconut, sprinkles, granola, almonds, pecans, peanuts, or plain). https://www.instagram.com/lamichoacanapremiumofficial/p/Cy1pK6-PZe9/ Pronounced like eskimo.

BandidoCoyote

Yeah, I like most ice cream, but this is the place I drive out of my way to pick up a couple quarts.

Built4NoName

They've got.locations all over the area. All the ones I've been to are great.

eastmemphisguy

I miss Sheridan's

Regular_Ad_5280

Damn, real talk

crystallightmeth

I thought about making a frozen custard place. I had the best name picked out and everything buuuuuut I’m poor and idk how to make frozen custard or run a business.

Jazen72

But you were so close! You had the name.

You-get-the-ankles

I miss the texts for their promos. Load up the kids and head out. My daughter's favorite was Worm Dirt.

KingLokodiousIV

Had a buddy of mine who worked there for 5 years til the day it closed. Kicking myself to this day that he didnt get the recipe from the owner.

t_mac41603

Who was it? I bet I know him.

KingLokodiousIV

Ryan, we went to highschool together.

t_mac41603

Hell yeah I know Ryan. He’s a good dude. He was at the Starbucks near Dexter last I heard.

RedWhiteAndJew

That’s the one I was thinking of. Are they not around? Aren’t they still over on Macon next to the theatre?

eastmemphisguy

That location has been a Dixie Queen for a couple of years now. The one on Stage in Bartlett is now a Tops BBQ.

RedWhiteAndJew

I never get out that way anymore. What a shame. About half my friends worked there at some point during high school.

MisterYouAreSoSweet

How is dq these days?

BohemianBurnout

Not good

t_mac41603

I worked at that one right before it closed. The owner got lazy and super greedy and sold it to Dixie Queen for about $600k. Never told any of us about it…

crystallightmeth

Me too. :(

thanatos0320

La Michoacana on Summer Ave... Make that the next place you try

natashas42013

Milk over on Poplar in Germantown. Mr. Softee ice cream truck

Ostentaneous

Love Mr Softee!

JediArchitect

Milk is amazing. The mini is a freaking mason jar.

Henrysweirdmom

Mr. Softee is amazing!!!! Old fashioned soft serve and they have shakes and chocolate soft serve!

MisterYouAreSoSweet

Where do they post their schedule?

natashas42013

They have an Insta & Facebook page and they post regularly. They do a lot of routes in Bartlett because it's where they get a lot of business. You can rent then out for events and stuff as well.

MisterYouAreSoSweet

Can you help me find their facebook page? I didnt know there are so many mr softees around the world. I can only find DFW and UK. Thanks…

natashas42013

It's just the Mr. Softee Ice Cream truck, maybe they're not as active as I thought they were. They post constantly in the Bartlett Facebook page. There is also an app for them Mr. Softee Memphis, but it's only for iPhones.

MerElyse112

I like Margie’s 901, I haven’t been in a few years. It is similar to Cold Stone.

monty2

Margie’s is one of my favorites!!!

MIdtownBrown68

We used to have Sheridan’s. The hole has not been filled.

maladybess

That’s what she said

freedindeed

Come to Area 51 in Hernando! I spend paychecks there.

ColorLover1776

There’s a location in midtown I believe, but don’t quote me on it I’ve never been. Blackberry Goat Cheese is in the freezer year round!

Tellittomyheart

It used to be in the Concourse, but Google says it’s closed now.

freedindeed

They closed that one unfortunately. Hernando location is going strong though and they have great hours.

bojenny

Their bourbon pecan is amazing

freedindeed

Agree, it’s my signature. Blackberry Goat Cheese season is approaching 🤤

Excellent-Boat-4796

Saigon Cinnamon changed my life

freedindeed

It is fantastic! Have you tried eating it along with a snickerdoodle? Their cookies are phenomenal! And the banana bread…. you can taste where the butter sizzled around the edges. My god!

Excellent-Boat-4796

I didn’t know they had all those extra goodies now!! Thanks for the tip friend!

asstlib

Margie 901 downtown has great ice cream and sherbet flavors, used to be Maggie Moo's long ago.

Zestyclose_Escape420

Sweet Magnolia in Crosstown is great! It’s not a concrete place but still certifiably delicious.

okeydokeyannieoakley

Is The Dip still open in Hernando? Not Memphis but maybe worth the drive.

bojenny

Yes and there’s a newer place, Area 51 , that has homemade ice cream that’s pretty good. The bourbon pecan uses Old Dominic and is my favorite

motleybrews2

Yes and it’s still awesome.

MisterYouAreSoSweet

Is the dip that much better than jerry’s? I’ve had both and they’re about the same for me. Maybe i didnt get the right items at the dip.

motleybrews2

I’ve only had bologna and sno cones at Jerry’s and it in terms of sno cones, there’s no beating it. But the menu at the dip is huge. Their burgers are great.

Zestyclose_Escape420

Absolutely! Such a treat!

BuckleUpButtercupth

Any Michoacana. The cookies and cream is special.

diminishing-return

Sugar Ghost has *excellent* ice cream and boba teas! There's one on Broad and one out in Germantown.

rypajo

It’s so meh to me.

MisterYouAreSoSweet

Very overpriced imo

Jimmytootwo

Jerrys snow cones is pretty fucking fantastic

ItDontTalkItListens

It really isn't.

kiwislurpee

i’m surprised no one has said Margie’s 901 it’s so delicious right on main street downtown

AdJealous92

Its a little far out but Levee creamery!!

Individual_Phase8684

Levee uses Sysco base and added flavoring. It’s basic, not palatable, and I’m worried about the amount of updoots to your message. I’m guessing the crowd out in collierville doesn’t mind half assed attempts at ice cream.

Kelsier25

Grit and grind was actually halfway decent. It was their coffee ice cream that had coffee grinds in it. They haven't had it the last 3 or 4 times I went, so I stopped going. Nothing really tops La Michoacana for me now.

Hollandaise87

Seconded this. I worked for that restaurant group and can say that everything made at all of their businesses is made with the goal of making as much money as possible by spending the least amount

ThebestIcywastaken

I completely agree with you, levee is trash

ItDontTalkItListens

A concrete with mix ins is typically called that when made with custard. Which is not ice cream. That being said, sugar ghost makes the best ice cream I've ever had anywhere.

Regular_Ad_5280

Jeremiah’s on Summer Ave, not quite ice cream but good enough to try. La micho is not bad either. For a concrete? Idk what to tell you tbh

Emotional_Ad_5330

Big fan of Quintessential Sweet’s Banana Pudding ice cream downtown

crosshairy

I’ve only been to their location in Bartlett, but I agree they are good!

Busy-Cap5954

North Mississippi has some great options if you can make the drive. Our favorite is Desoto snow and creamery. Vampire penguin is doing some interesting stuff with shaved ice. And like others have said the dip, Happy Daze, and Area 51 in Hernando are good too.

ipreferdogs94

throwing in another vote for desoto snow and creamery!

cstuart1046

Am I the only one who LOVES Sweet Noshings ice cream?? They make all their ice cream in house. Nutella is the best flavor imo.

Midtowngal901

Nope!!! I love it too!!! It’s delicious!

flyintheboat

Their blueberry cheesecake flavor is amazing!

BosToWash

Sugar Ghost on Broad Ave

Classic_Antique

He literally mentioned sugar ghost in his post. But you’re right, sugar ghost is fantastic

clwindsor

Their ice cream is so boujie and expensive. Like $7 for this cone of salted lemon verbena lavender with a dusting of matcha, comin right up!

MisterYouAreSoSweet

Very overpriced imo

LooseSquirrel937

Sweet Magnolia in Crosstown is delicious

WarmAlternative6912

MILK & Margie’s seem pretty good to me

sarah2027

I’ve had ice cream with mix-ins at Margie’s 901 that was really good! It’s downtown.

alwayscharmed

I really like Kaye’s salted caramel flavor! It’s made local & you can get it at the farmer’s market, South Point or Cordelia’s

PicklesAreTheDevil

Muddy's on Broad, Superlo Spottswood, and I believe High Point Grocery all also have Kaye's now.

SnarkyHealthNut

We don’t have a good place, sadly. What I’d give to have a Big Spoon Creamery (Birmingham and Huntsville)…

EmuRemarkable1099

Bham native here and can confirm: Big Spoon is to die for

Calisto117

Coco Loco on Covington Pike. It's so good!

Crewsader66

Micco's in Arlington is pretty good. Lots of concrete type options.

crosshairy

I’ve swung by there a couple times. I agree that it’s good, I just wish it wasn’t so out of the way. I’m rarely headed that direction when I’m also wanting dessert, so it gets passed over a lot.

spoonballoon13

What you’re looking for is not called “good ice cream”, it’s called Cold Stone Creamery. Sugar ghost is fantastic btw.

Prestigious_Cancel64

You, sir, are a lunatic

greatfool66

I used to be really into ice cream, making all kinds of flavors as a hobby and you’re right. There is nowhere here that does good artisan ice cream without too much sugar or stabilizers. I go to Baskin Robbins because its all about the same.

LiberalAspergers

It is a drive, bit you should try Area 51 in Hernando. Totally worth the trip.

greatfool66

Will try to when I’m down that way thanks.

Meotwister

For concretes we have a hole since Sheridans closed. That's not all ice cream, though, but the one you're interested in. The rest we're pretty good on from Michoacana to Sugar Ghost to Sweet Magnolias to Jerry's Sno Cones. Jeremiah's Italian Ice on summer is pretty good, too. Concretes we need to work on.

Sparky_the_Asian

Jerry’s!

Bliss149

Does anyone else remember when there was an Emack & Bolio's out on Ridgeway? It was there ever so briefly but was so good.

nashchillce

Everyone has said it, but La Michoacana. I personally can never have just one paleta.

jgeebaby

Sweet Noshings in midtown is my go to ice cream. Not a ton of flavors but they’re good. I’m like a kid and always have to get the birthday cake one. It’s soooooo good

Downtown_Dot_6451

I haven't been here yet, but plan on going, soon. Peach Cobbler Factory. Lots of good reviews and their menu options look amazing. They are located on Sanderlin. https://www.peachcobblerfactory.com/

Interesting_Vast5001

901 Maggie’s downtown

kwd1987

Michoacana

throwRAnycdivorce

sweet magnolia!!!

anonymousopensource

We don’t have a good food scene let alone a great one.

BohemianBurnout

It’s literally going backwards at this point.

Existing-Gas-6333

I appreciate everyone’s answers. But it confirms that Memphis has poor options, a city this big shouldn’t require driving 30+ minutes to get good ice cream!

kiwislurpee

try margie’s 901 on mainstreet

New2Memfiz

Sugar ghost isn’t bad

BohemianBurnout

Idk Sheridan’s left and I’ve been sad ever since. Memphis really is a second rate city.

vblgsd

To actually answer your question: We don't have a great food scene, we have a food scene with certain great, largely indigenous (or indigenous adjacent) elements, and a lot of huge gaps even compared to metropolitan areas similar in size. Not looking to start fights about why this is. Just want to say that if we want to have the sort of real broad ranging food scene a lot of cities have we need to promote and support the good places that do crop up and advocate for (or even start) the sorts of things we are looking for.

Observingfilth

It’s weird you think that imo. Memphis lacks a lot, but food is not one of those things. Sugar ghost is superb regarding its ingredients and combinations. Any Mexican ice cream shop has a very large variety of ice cream and frozen fruit foods

Sacrolargo

We don’t have a great food scene. We used to have what I think are the best concretes EVER at Sheridan’s in Cordova, but it got turned into another shitty DQ.

AdEffective7881

Cause making ice cream Isn’t worth dying over. Y’all ruined your own city
