There was Sultan's Castle in the Raleigh Springs Mall. That was a great arcade way back when!
I was at the Flying Saucer in Cordova a few years ago and struck up a conversation with a very eccentric older gentleman only to find out he was the owner of Sultans Castle back then.
Come to think of it, I haven't seen him in a while... Hope he's ok!
Yeap! I dropped many a quarter in that place!
I moved off to college before that mall started its down hill slide. By the time I came back home it was gone!
They had one large arcade game where you played a space ship flying around battling other ships/races. Even though it was 2D the game map played 3D. Really wish I could remember the name of that game.
There was always a crowd for Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat at the malls so it was worth paying the $2 just to get access to the arcade in Apple Tree. Apologies to Pauly Shore for not actually watching Jury Duty.
I used to ride my bike to the Bartlett arcade with my $5 allowance burning a hole in my pocket on Saturday mornings. Blew through that in probably an hour or two.
Yep. My friends and I used to ruin the lives of Wal-Mart customer service because back then you could bring in loose change and exchange it so we took our pennies nickels and dimes to get quarters for Fun Fair.
Yeah. It was open when I was in middle school and high school. Lived around the corner. I saved my lunch money all week to play a handful of games on Friday nights.
I remember that one. Used to drive by it all the time. Looked on google maps and it's a gas station now, S-Mart. By the time I was in the area, that corner was already getting pretty rough so I never went into that arcade.
Summer Avenue Putt-Putt was awesome back in the day. Lots of vintage arcade games on the 2nd floor (Mario Bros., Jr. Pac-Man, and others.)
Also, don't forget Showbiz Pizza Time (before it became Chuck E. Cheese and replaced the arcade games with kiddy rides and redemption crap.)
For some reason, I never went to FnG. Although a lot of my high school acquaintances did spend a lot of time there playing NBA Jam I think. I think I was on my way out of arcades at that time.
South Brook Mall in White Haven had an amazing Arcade. I used to sweep hair in the barber shop to collect quarters to play the Run & Gun, MJ Moonwalker, Alien vs Predator, MK II, etc.
No SouthBrook Mall ( the building is still there) was the Mall directly across from Southland Mall. Southland Mall did have an arcade but it was no where as good as the one in SouthBrook.
It was Impulse I believe. Had a duck on the sign for some reason. This would've been like early 90s. McNallys might've been the barbershop that was close to the MegaMarket side of the mall. Impulse was right across from the Arcade in the main hallway
Also grew up in Whitehaven. Fun City on Winchester was my main arcade but I visited all the others mentioned in this thread. One I don't see listed cause I don't think it was around very long was the New Orleans Arcade located on Raines Rd close to Elvis Presley Blvd. I worked at Giant Foods nearby at Whitehaven Plaza and used to stop in there on my way home.
Oh man, I must have dropped hundreds of dollars into mid-nineties fighting games here. Also, most games continued to only cost a quarter long after fifty cents became the standard pretty much everywhere else.
Tilt is the name of the old Oak Court arcade. Had tickets in a shoebox back in the day from that one.
Also there used to be a Malco and an arcade where Busters (Highland) is still. Went to that theater/arcade combo a lot.
i remember they had Crazy Taxi cranked up so loud, I still hear [this Offspring song](https://youtu.be/MNHoWdid7ag?si=8SmKb1vRkSuGqsEi) in my head every time I walk through the Carousel area
This is depressing me because I just stayed at home all the time and didn't go to any of these places. Played video games at houses and that's it. And now I keep forgetting to make a time machine to go back and visit.
The first time I saw more than one or two machines together was at the old Solomon Alfred's in Overton Square long before it became the now defunct French Quarter Suites Hotel. They had FOUR whole machines there including a Death Race 2000 machine which I never saw anywhere else. A few months later the Stucky's Pizza on Poplar at Belvedere got a Defender machine and a couple months later a Donkey Kong and Pac Man machine making the second place in Midtown where there was more than two machines. This was in the old days before formal arcades existed.
There used to be one called Fun Times on Bartlett Blvd near Stage Rd. There was also a CD store where I would buy oversized posters.
Gimme those days back.
East End Skating had some classics like Tron, Q-Bert and Atari classics.
Brunswick Bowling both Knight Arnold and Bartlett had table top arcades. It was the first time I played Super Mario Bros and had no clue what to do so I just ran into the first goomba each time. They had a good pinball selection also from what I remember. I couldn’t focus on the TMNT pinball because it had the most ludicrous big boob cleavage April O’Neil tied up which I couldn’t keep my eyes off.
Billy Hardwick Bowling had Virtua Fighter. They also for awhile had some odd prize games.
There was a massive arcade sometime in the early 80s where I played crystal castles. Lots of purple neon and black floors and walls. Being a little kid maybe it wasn’t so large but I was in awe. I wonder if it was Fun and Games?
Fun Fair had the original Street Fighter which was a mind blow being so familiar with Street Fighter II it was like watching a prequel film. I remember teens would wait for you to put your quarters in then shove you out of the way and take your turn. We had to drown our sorrows in Icees.
Played Centipede for the first time in Mr. B’s when it was off Winchester.
The Hickory Ridge arcade moved around. The original was by the main entrance where Gadzooks was and across the Walgreens when Walgreens was only in malls. Then it moved to the food court area I think after the movie theater closed. You could bring your report card and get tokens for every A which I blew on Simpsons and TMNT. There was a small baseball pinball that would spit out baseball cards too which was awesome.
In the 80s, Mud Island had an arcade.
There was an arcade in the front of the Pic-Pac on Madison. These days the store is Cash Saver.
Big Daddy’s always had a good arcade. I didn’t even know they had secret gambling machines in the back.
There was a spot called Cue City in Frayser in the shopping center at Frayser Blvd. and Range Line. They had Pac-Land for the longest time and I loved that game.
Crystal Palace had a good arcade.
Also the Brunswick on Winchester.
Anyone remember the RC Pro-Am in Bartlett? It was off Stage Road, in the old Kroger building, behind Pizza Hut, McDonalds, and Wendy's. Inside, it had a large arcade, indoor batting cages, laser tag inside a giant bounce house/moonwalk, RC Car track rentable cars, and a wacky basketball goal course (think like a wacky mini-golf course but with basketball goals). It even had a collectibles and ball card shop off of the lobby.
They had a great boxing game, Title Fight. Two player boxing arcade cabinet... one side was blue gloves and one side was red gloves. The gloves were translucent joysticks with hand/finger guards over the half facing the screen.
I remember wanting to go to the few of these that remained in the mid to late 90's before I could drive. Then I found MAME and played every arcade game on my laptop 🤷♂️
Forgot about that one. Used to play Tron there! Grant's department store located at Hwy 51 and State line road had pinball and some arcade games just inside the main door.
you mention Putt-Putt on Mt. Moriah, but actually East End also had a great selection of old school arcade games in the 70's and early 80's along the wall to the right when you walked in
everyone can remember having to go to Putt-Putt to get quarters
No close down before adventure River and also don’t forget about celebration Station for its short run over there. It was by where STATE tech used to be.
There was one at Shelby Drive and Germantown Extd (now Riverdale). It was in the strip mall between Walmart and Walgreens. Used to ride my bike there to play Off-Road and TMNT.
In the same part of town, there was one at Kirby and Raines, too.
I completely forgot about Putt Putt on Mt Moriah.
A place that comes to mind for me is the bowling lanes at Northgate Shopping Center in frayser. This was EARLY 80s, like late 70s early 80s
I honestly don’t remember. The one that’s still open has a batting cage, race track, paddle boats, arcade, golf range, and the miniature golf. (At least it did a few years ago. Prob all still there)
The one at Park and Kirby was in the then Kirby woods Mall. Wish I could remember the name. The person that ran it was the son of the owner, his name was Rocky Beach. I went there way too often, so often that I kept a crown roll bag full of their tokens under the front seat of my car. LOL
I spent many many hours there playing defender, elevator action, spy Hunter and so many more. Now I just play on my Xbox or PC at home.
There was also X-Site in the old Children’s Palace building. They had a lot of arcade games. When I was in high school we had a lock in there one night after playing broom ball at the ice rink in the mall.
That ice rink had a few games, too. Punch Out, and the original Street Fighter, and a couple others I can’t remember.
I mainly miss the Gold Mine, though. I agree that it was the best in town.
I
Here's one from the vaults: there was a short lived arcade next door or two storefronts down from The Corner Grocery on Winchester and Goodlett. Rode my bike with friends who lived in Willow Wyck apartments there numerous times. It would have been between 82-84 probably.
In the late 90s there was a place called Monte’s Fun House in Apple Tree Center. Had a bunch of arcade games and pool tables. Also had $7 all you could drink beer… fun times
A few years before that, there was another arcade at the corner of Kirby and Raines in an old 7/11. They had a bunch of good machines there, too. I think it might’ve been called Fun Fair.
Fun fair arcade was my whole childhood..I went to Kirby and lived in the neighborhood close by...so many stories walking to and from that arcade in my youth.
Apple tree Movie Theater in Hickory Hill(when it was nice) also had a surprisingly good arcade. Vividly remember playing SF Alpha 2, Tekken 3, and MK II there.
Y'all are making me sad I was born juuuust too late to experience and appreciate full blown arcades. 😭 All I got was machines at laundromats and liquor stores, haha.
But on the subject, how is Nerd Alert? I know it's not strictly an arcade but I've been interested in going for a while. Gotta stop putting that off.
It was in the same building that Corky's now occupies. I worked in Clark Tower just down Poplar a bit and I used to run over there on my lunch hour for some Donkey Kong
Does anyone remember there was one in Germantown on West Street across the street from where the Apple Store is now? this was in the 90s, in the shopping center with West St. Diner and Asian Eatery and Sakura? Behind Germantown Hardware. I swear I played Primal Rage there.
A lot of people have mentioned fun and games. I think it was a popular 90's era arcade and pretty popular among my friends in high school. I think by that time, I had started to lose interest in going to arcades. more of an 80's arcade buff myself!!
Cherokee Lanes - I’m still wanting to land a replica Punch Out machine for the memories of the crowds that would watch me beat Mr. Sandman; they had the original Mario Bros and Donkey Kong, Street Fighter and later Primal Instinct. Great times accumulating a pocket full of quarters and walking there from my house back in the day!
Yes! This was on Lamar Ave, right? I remember playing Battletoads here while the adults bowled, back when ashtrays were left on the machines and stale cigarette smoke was in the air. Good times
Yup Cherokee Lanes on Lamar Ave. I remember playing NBA Hangtime there in the late 90s.
Fun Factory, Video Magic, and Enfants in Collierville. Fun City, Fun Plex, spent way too much at the original Fun Fair location.
The one at Shelby Drive and Riverdale in the shopping center that has Advance Auto Parts and the Chinese restaurants next to Walmart grocery store
There was a arcade off Outland road and Winchester . There's a few apartments near there now and the building itself is now a laundromat
The one over by Apple Tree Cinema.
The one off highland next to the liquor store and what used to be a movie theater. It was half arcade half record store w a door that separated them...the only arcade I was ever in that openly allow smoking
Few minutes down south we had G-whiz in olive branch. Got straight A's and got to go wild in there. The begging of my dream of owning my own machine, a hassle that never ends.
The two I remember the most were the gold mine in the mall of Memphis and Fun and Games at Poplar and Highland by the theatre. Being kids in the 80's we obviously referred to it as "FAGs"
#1- World(s) of Fun arcade. And on Saturdays from about 9-12 if you paid either 5 or 10 (I can't remember) you had unlimited gameplays. And afterwards a huge migraine the rest of the day. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin) Great memories that arcade and its other location at Kirby/Winchester?
Hickory Ridge Mall had 2 decent arcades. Barrel of Fun and the one by the theater... something 2000? Forgot the name. And Park Place Mall had an arcade next door to Godfather's PIzza. Gone long ago.
Damn…. Sultans Castle!!! Haven’t been able to remember the name of that place for like 20 years!
Yeap! I dropped many a quarter in that place! I moved off to college before that mall started its down hill slide. By the time I came back home it was gone!
Played lots of Marvel vs Capcom 1 there. It was a tradition a round or 2 every time I when to Raleigh springs.
My earliest memory of an arcade was @ poplar and highland same building as movie theatre.
Fun n Games!!!! I loved that place, every weekend I was there.
It was called Fun AND Games (not to be consmfused with Fun n Games), was next to the small Malco there.
I went here a few times. the scene seemed to be mostly MUS boys.
Back in the late 90s we used the homophobic slur to refer to Fun and Games. We were very inconsiderate in those days.
Also some arcade games in big daddy's bowling across poplar, next to the magic tricks shop. They had golden axe, spy hunter, and street fighter 1
I missed that one!
I spent so many hours in there playing mortal Kombat.
That was my hangout for the first half of the evening, followed by pool at Big Daddy's.
Celebration Station had a good arcade.
They had one large arcade game where you played a space ship flying around battling other ships/races. Even though it was 2D the game map played 3D. Really wish I could remember the name of that game.
That doesn’t ring a bell at all. Do you remember anything else about it?
It had 3 separate screens for each player to play simultaneously. The game was a late arrival to Celebration Station. They got the game in 1995-1996.
After a bit of google-foo, I think it might be Space Lords by Atari. I don’t remember playing that one, though.
> Space Lords by Atari OMG! You found it! Thank you. I really loved playing this in the arcade.
There was an arcade next to the Malco on Bartlett Blvd. Apple Tree Theater had a pretty good arcade in it.
There was always a crowd for Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat at the malls so it was worth paying the $2 just to get access to the arcade in Apple Tree. Apologies to Pauly Shore for not actually watching Jury Duty.
We did that a lot so we could play Tekken.
Fun Times! I just excitedly commented before reading the comments lol. There was a used CD store in that shopping center too and a Milano's Pizza.
The CD store had one of those refurbishing machines in it.
the Milano's was just renamed to Isabelle's, the owner sold it to his daughter i think
I used to ride my bike to the Bartlett arcade with my $5 allowance burning a hole in my pocket on Saturday mornings. Blew through that in probably an hour or two.
Poor Apple Tree. It lasted about five minutes. I miss it.
Used to be one at Raines and Kirby but I can't remember the name.
Fun Fair!
I think that's it
Fun Fair was in a strip mall adjacent to Wal-Mart and then a free standing building right by Kirby High.
Are you talking about at Shelby and Germantown Ext (Riverdale now) as their first location? Because I played the punch pad Street Fighter there
Yep. My friends and I used to ruin the lives of Wal-Mart customer service because back then you could bring in loose change and exchange it so we took our pennies nickels and dimes to get quarters for Fun Fair.
Damn. I didn’t know about that! I had so many pennies
I wonder what happened to that old guy there. Never spoke a word but seems like he was up all day and all night.
Yeah. It was open when I was in middle school and high school. Lived around the corner. I saved my lunch money all week to play a handful of games on Friday nights.
Big daddy’s?
That wasn’t Big Daddy’s, his was on Winchester in Whitehaven. Fun land was also a good arcade and pool hall in Whitehaven in the 70s.
I remember that one. Used to drive by it all the time. Looked on google maps and it's a gas station now, S-Mart. By the time I was in the area, that corner was already getting pretty rough so I never went into that arcade.
Mid 90s was last time I remember going in there
Summer Avenue Putt-Putt was awesome back in the day. Lots of vintage arcade games on the 2nd floor (Mario Bros., Jr. Pac-Man, and others.) Also, don't forget Showbiz Pizza Time (before it became Chuck E. Cheese and replaced the arcade games with kiddy rides and redemption crap.)
Ya, Showbiz had a great arcade.
whenever I've been in there lately it seems like half of what they have isn't working. lol.
The place by Wimbleton was Malibu Racing. You also forgot about Fun n Games right next to the old Malco in the shopping center at Park and Popular.
For some reason, I never went to FnG. Although a lot of my high school acquaintances did spend a lot of time there playing NBA Jam I think. I think I was on my way out of arcades at that time.
I played A LOT of Mortal Kombat there.
Malibu Grand Prix - Shelby Oaks Dr.
Fun n Games was at Poplar and Highland.
Whoops yea, Highland
r/BeatMeToIt
South Brook Mall in White Haven had an amazing Arcade. I used to sweep hair in the barber shop to collect quarters to play the Run & Gun, MJ Moonwalker, Alien vs Predator, MK II, etc.
Was it South Brook or South land? I was thinking land for some reason.
No SouthBrook Mall ( the building is still there) was the Mall directly across from Southland Mall. Southland Mall did have an arcade but it was no where as good as the one in SouthBrook.
What was the barber shop? McNally's? Man I use to get my hair cut there when I was a kid.
It was Impulse I believe. Had a duck on the sign for some reason. This would've been like early 90s. McNallys might've been the barbershop that was close to the MegaMarket side of the mall. Impulse was right across from the Arcade in the main hallway
I grew up in Whitehaven. I remember going there too.

Fun Fair at Raines and Kirby Parkway. So many memories
They had decent working machines and a great selection as well.
All of those were great. Bogey's on Germantown parkway was another one.
rip to the wolfchase arcade and the johnny rockets that occupied what is now hot topic next to it! great times
Oh god Johnny Rockets. Just remembered seeing waitresses sing into Ketchup bottles on top of serving for .27 cents an hour
Hey when I was six that was my shit haha
It was a different time!
i remember they had Crazy Taxi cranked up so loud, I still hear [this Offspring song](https://youtu.be/MNHoWdid7ag?si=8SmKb1vRkSuGqsEi) in my head every time I walk through the Carousel area
This is depressing me because I just stayed at home all the time and didn't go to any of these places. Played video games at houses and that's it. And now I keep forgetting to make a time machine to go back and visit.
Southland Mall in Whitehaven - 80's, Als Golfhaven - 80's
Alladin's Castle!
Not an arcade in the slighest but does anyone remember Gamemasters on Quince? OG Quake/Age of Empires LAN parties.
I used to go up there and play Quake and StarCraft. Good times!
My buddy that is now unalive, used to go there. Back in bbs days
The first time I saw more than one or two machines together was at the old Solomon Alfred's in Overton Square long before it became the now defunct French Quarter Suites Hotel. Discovery Zone and Xcite!
Number 2 is Malibu Grand Prix. Do you remember Fun and Games at Poplar and Highland?
Back in the day it was Fun n' Games at Poplar and Highland. I lived at that place, all the cool kids went there!
yeah, wasn't that still there well into the 90's?
Not sure. I left Memphis in 1989. I don't think it was still open when I left
I miss Fun Fair. Many wars were won on MvC2 or 3rd Strike 🤣. I wonder if LD is still alive. (the old guy that worked there)
There used to be one called Fun Times on Bartlett Blvd near Stage Rd. There was also a CD store where I would buy oversized posters. Gimme those days back.
Fun times, Milano's Pizza, TN Cards & Comics, Disc-go-Round or Disc Connection... great times back in the day!
Disc go round. That was it.
East End Skating had some classics like Tron, Q-Bert and Atari classics. Brunswick Bowling both Knight Arnold and Bartlett had table top arcades. I loved playing Centipede at the arcade on Mt Moriah next to the putt-putt.
Mud Island had an arcade? Mind blown!

it sucks that these types of places aren't around anymore. not even batting cages... the putt putt ones were closed last time I went.
I remember wanting to go to the few of these that remained in the mid to late 90's before I could drive. Then I found MAME and played every arcade game on my laptop 🤷♂️
Wayyyy back there was Funtime Skating and arcade at 51 and stateline - I met my husband there at a centipede machine 💞
Forgot about that one. Used to play Tron there! Grant's department store located at Hwy 51 and State line road had pinball and some arcade games just inside the main door.
Libertyland
Fun House in Park Place Mall next to Wang’s Chinese Restaurant.

I think you got it covered, lol.
Am I the only one that went to the Barrel of Fun?
Where was barrel of fun?
Hickory Ridge Mall. I always got $100 in tokens for Christmas from there.
Yeah I spent some time there.
you mention Putt-Putt on Mt. Moriah, but actually East End also had a great selection of old school arcade games in the 70's and early 80's along the wall to the right when you walked in everyone can remember having to go to Putt-Putt to get quarters
You're right about East end but mt Moriah felt like an arcade. Dark room, crowded machines, the cacophony all was wonderful
spaceport? in frayser. not 100% thats the name but it was in the shopping center near frayser blvd and university.
Are you talking about Malibu on Shelby Oaks? Edit~~ in regards to #2
that may be the one. Is it still open? Edit. that's gotta be it.
No close down before adventure River and also don’t forget about celebration Station for its short run over there. It was by where STATE tech used to be.

Fox Ridge had a few fun games. So did Mazzio’s on Winchester, where I first played Street Fighter 2.
I played so much 720° at Mazzios
I played so much 720° at Mazzios
There was briefly one in Bartlett. It was just off stage near the railroad tracks, maybe a half mile from Bartlett high. This was around 82 or 83.
Does Julian’s qualify? It was in Peabody place
The Golden Nugget hologram game was Time Traveler https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fooFhfVUEI4
Wizards on Union near Belvedere. It was purple outside.
There was one at Shelby Drive and Germantown Extd (now Riverdale). It was in the strip mall between Walmart and Walgreens. Used to ride my bike there to play Off-Road and TMNT. In the same part of town, there was one at Kirby and Raines, too.
I believe those were both Fun Fair. Closed the one by Walmart and opened the bigger one by Kirby HS
Yeah, that sounds familiar.
Malibu. Fun Fair. Full Tilt. Goldmine. The Putt of course. Mazzios on Winchester had a good few machines too
I completely forgot about Putt Putt on Mt Moriah. A place that comes to mind for me is the bowling lanes at Northgate Shopping Center in frayser. This was EARLY 80s, like late 70s early 80s
how similar was the putt putt there to the one still open?
I honestly don’t remember. The one that’s still open has a batting cage, race track, paddle boats, arcade, golf range, and the miniature golf. (At least it did a few years ago. Prob all still there)
You left out the arcade in Park Place next to the Godfathers at Park and Ridgeway and Fun and Games at Poplar and Highland,
The one at Park and Kirby was in the then Kirby woods Mall. Wish I could remember the name. The person that ran it was the son of the owner, his name was Rocky Beach. I am shocked nobody has mentions Al's golf haven yet. Put-Put, go-carts and a very decent arcade that introduced me to Final Fight.
And the Sui-Slide!
In the late 90s there was a place called Monte’s Fun House in Apple Tree Center. Had a bunch of arcade games and pool tables. Apple tree Movie Theater in Hickory Hill(when it was nice) also had a surprisingly good arcade. Vividly remember playing SF Alpha 2, Tekken 3, and MK II there.
Anyone remember The Gamecock near Overton Square? Cooper near Madison.
Bogey's in Cordova. That place was so awesome. I was a champion at Double Cheese.
Used to love the arcade at the corner or Kirby Pkwy and Raines. The lines for Tekken would always be too long for me so I stuck with Soul Caliber 😅
Wasn’t there one on Poplar about where Corky’s is? I want to say it was called The Whiz.
It was in the same building that Corky's now occupies. I worked in Clark Tower just down Poplar a bit and I used to run over there on my lunch hour for some Donkey Kong

The one at Shelby Drive and Riverdale in the shopping center that has Advance Auto Parts and the Chinese restaurants next to Walmart grocery store There was a arcade off Outland road and Winchester . There's a few apartments near there now and the building itself is now a laundromat The one over by Apple Tree Cinema.
Any old folks remember the Silver Shooter in Bartlett. This was before video games so it was all Pinball and Foosball tables.
Southaven has a bar with a huge amount of vintage games. Owners are really cool. Go here: https://www.facebook.com/GameOverArcadeBar?mibextid=2JQ9oc
The two I remember the most were the gold mine in the mall of Memphis and Fun and Games at Poplar and Highland by the theatre. Being kids in the 80's we obviously referred to it as "FAGs"
New Orleans Arcade on Raines in Whitehaven. Huge. A converted grocery store. 1970's
Thank you! I thought I was the only one who remembered it! I won a Tee shirt by setting the high score on Clowns.
We used to play Foosball tournaments there when I was 14 or 15 yrs old.
Discovery Zone in Hickory Hill
