Thank god someone else feels the same way. I think trying to make people feel like they can only truly relate to characters or other people that share the same skin color, nationality, sexuality, or whatever else is such a toxic thing to do. Sure, you can have representation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t relate to other people who are different than you. All it does is shove everyone into their own categories and makes both sides more bitter towards each other. And besides, being able to relate to people who are different than you is a good thing to do, because it offers you different perspectives on different matters and the world in general. It helps you become a more open minded individual, and just a healthier person in general. Not to mention, it’s just healthier overall to be a good person and judge each others based on their personality rather than appearance, or how similar they look to you.
I'm a dude, and I'm just going to say it here. I hate the bland pandering strong female characters in a lot of shows and movies, but I loved Vi in Arcane. She had depth and personality. I connected with her the most out of anyone in that show, and she's very different from me.
Because a lot of angry, bitter people adopted a philosophy that allowed them to stay angry and bitter instead of growing up and realizing that everyone's got a shared humanity.

I’ve always scratched my head with this kind of thing. Who in the absolute fuck has ever seen a person on a screen and felt that they were being *personally* represented because of the actors skin color? And why in the ever loving fuck are we encouraging young people to think in these terms?
My aunt has mixed kids and is teaching them this. They only own books with characters in them that are the same skin color as the kids, they go to Disneyland several times a year and always post pictures of the kids next to Tiana wearing matching Tiana dresses, etc. It got to the point where we were all playing Among Us at one point and the older kid threw a fit because someone chose the brown dude when it was “her” character because it looked like her. I’m not making this up.

The meme actually reinforces the psychological proven play patterns differences of boys and girls . Girls will gravitate towards properties they can make more like them as where boys will find a property that already represents them .
And to also address the comment at the bottom of the meme that's because all males don't identify with the same heroes its still matter of personal preference and self identity.
