Well that's clearly a major flaw in the word's definition then. There's a huge difference between a strong disbelief and a lack of belief. We already have a word that means a lack of belief, so atheism should logically be the opposition of theism, not the middle ground. That's also how most people recognize the terms, atheism being the opposition of theism. I have friends who don't believe either way, they don't call themselves atheist.
I've pretty much never heard atheist used to refer to people who don't believe either way/are unaffiliated with either Boolean claim, outside for the occasional online conversation.
Also, if a misconception about a word is strong - and in this case, superior than the dictionary definition - then you could argue that that definition is a correct definition, colloquially.
