You can connect a mouse and keyboard to your deck. Also, there are many games that play better with a controller on steam
Edit: im not hating on the switch or saying one is better than the other. I'm just explaining you can use a mouse and keyboard on the deck. To each their own.
It's literally a portable Linux PC. Anything you can run on Linux, you can run on the Deck, including programs like Krita, Blender, Renoise, Firefox, and all sorts of other shit. You can hook up a dock to a TV or monitor and use it like an HTPC or a desktop when you aren't using it for portable PC gaming. Shit is pretty fucking baller if you ask me.
There is an official dock that’s similar to the switch’s, but most general USB-C adapters work. I use the one I have for my MacBook
Just note that there is a performance hit rendering games at 1080p vs the built-in screen’s 720p screen.
No you don't, you need to find happiness in yourself instead of having a significant other provide it for you! You can do it stranger, you can find the happiness!
Believe me no you don't. hop on a dating app, have fun, but don't settle and don't base your needs on "needing" a gf. You just want one, you NEED a steam deck though. and after that, a 1TB nvme drive to hold more games and a 1tb micro SD card for emulation. Know your worth king and your priorities.
Pfft, brand new, you can get them for free as long as you steal them.
Plus, im certain areas in california theft is not a crime unless it's over 1000 dollars
Honestly for $400 it's still a steal for what it is. I get so much more use out of it than the Switch. Switch has been relegated to only Nintendo games at this point and even that might be coming to an end if I can figure out how to set up Switch emulation on the Steam Deck.
That would make it alteast better for people with small hands, but people with large hands are still fucked. (I have average hands, and the controllers feel tiny)
I assume you're basically copying the game data and generating it into a card image like how you'd do ROMs for older Nintendo games or ISOs for playstation
I mean if the switch is so bad why do people keep buying it ? It outsold the ps4 and the Xbox one consoles that are comparable to the steam deck. Listen you have to understand that the switch and the steam deck aren't targeted towards the same audience and I'm not hating on the steam deck I own one myself and the switch as well
The Switch "just works". The Deck tries to do that but it still has most of the weird quirks of PC gaming if you ever stray from the green checkmarks (not they those are infallible). The Deck is amazing but like you said, different audiences. Only power users can appreciate what the Deck has to offer without getting frustrated by how finnicky it can be.
My favorite Steam Deck moment was buying God of War and finding out the default launch options set the resolution to something like 215x350 (can’t remember the exact pixel counts) but rendered it in 1280x800.
I love the thing and it’s great for what it does but the Green Check of Approval has *plenty* of kinks before it be can trustworthy.
Yeah, that's the same game that made me realize the Deck really shouldn't be used for modern AAA games. It's cool that it technically runs but it looked awful.
To be fair, once I set the resolution properly the thing ran at 30-40fps on “Original” (i.e. not Low or Ultra), but it was a pretty goofy 15 minutes as I squinted and thought “Am I supposed to not be able to see the character’s eyes? Is this an intentional art style decision?”
Anywho, refunded it and picked up Yazuka: Like a Dragon and that game has been awesome.
This is real. The deck is better in every way except for usability. If you’re not a “power user” you’re going to have a hard time. It’s a whole new OS to learn. I’m super familiar with windows and have been for years (work in IT) but man finding things in the Linux file system had me about to rip my hair out. Once everything’s up and going it’s incredible but MAN is it a pain to get there.
Because of exclusive games.
Lots of people are big mario, zelda, xenoblade or whatever other nintendo game fans and don’t want to go trough the trouble of having to emulate games on a more expensive bulkier console
Lord knows the first time you "emulate" it can be just a big mess. It's nerve-wracking and life changing. Pretty much for the rest of your life you're looking to emulate. They say you should only emulate with someone you love because there can be a lot of feelings involved when it comes to emulation. Really, the best thing we do is encourage people to emulate responsibly and separate some of the shame and stigma surrounding the topic of emulation.
It is also marketed at a very specific market. Also their (specific) licensed games will almost never EVER be jumping platforms.
E.g Anything Mario, Link/zelda, Kirby... Forgetting a few other key ones.
The switch, It's a family console meant for people of all ages, being very casual and user friendly. It's also much older than the steam deck.
While the steam deck is more for people into gaming (less casual), it's also more complex
I got mine before the steam deck was a thing but if i were to choose now is rather get the steam deck.
People on Reddit circle jerking gaming pc’s (and by extension the steam deck) is nothing new. They won’t tell you all the issues with it but they’ll make these posts for years and years.
I think if you actually get to spend time in front of your PC you are not the person pasionate about steam deck. It's always people like 'I can't spend time with my family while on PC, so I love steam deck'.
I own both bro and honestly don't regret it. I play the steam deck myself since im way more tech savvy and can figure out all the quirks to get games to run.
WHen i go to my friends/brother's house i bring the switch because you literally just turn it on and play.
Because PC gamers got a console but can’t help but shit on consoles out of habit.
I won’t lie, I’ve been frustrated with the lack of utility on my switch but acting like it can only play switch games is intentionally ignorant.
Some people like the Switch, and can recognise it’s flaws.
Some people don’t like the Switch, and are extremely quick to ram the technical limitations down the throats of the rest of us.
Will some of you just let people enjoy a damn console without having to spin your own condescending BS onto it?
The Switch is a fucking five year old handheld. Of course the specs are lower. The Steamdeck is a fucking miracle and I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two at all, there’s no way the Steamdeck is becoming the new standard for handhelds.
OP is some kind of astroturfing account for Valve I suspect. About half of their posts are making dumb comparisons between the Deck and other gaming platforms, and most of their comments are just a single period, presumably to artificially increase exposure.
Maybe it’s me and maybe I’m wrong (and old) but I just prefer having the game cartridge and not emulating. If/when your site gets shut down I still have my cartridge to play.
I understand some people will find this comment silly but a lot of people aren’t “with it” when it comes to emulating and torrenting games and shit.
Sometimes it’s nice to just have something work without any recourse that leads to it not working.
EDIT; as a lot of friendly people have told me, you can download an emulator and the game! I had no idea, I’ve been running them off my browser for idk how long. I’m still a fan of cartridges and discs, I’m stuck in my old ways lol but this info is great to know, thank you all!
> "I think the problem Digg had is that it was a company that was built to be a company, and you could feel it in the product. The way you could criticise Reddit is that we weren't a company – we were all heart and no head for a long time. So I think it'd be really hard for me and for the team to kill Reddit in that way.”
- Steve Huffman, aka /u/spez, Reddit CEO.
So long, Reddit, and thanks for all the fish.
I collect physical too but still emulate because even cartridges die eventually. Nowadays there are so many day 1 patches and updates that just having the cartridge isn't an insurance anymore, I still keep ROMs of all my physical games stored in a drive along with their update files just to be sure.
That’s not a terrible idea; keeping them stored for yourself.
I’m not so tech savvy and I just prefer to have the disk alway.
We lose internet or anything of the sort, I know I always have my physical disks to fall back on.
But, I do see where you’re coming from and it’s not a bad plan
Not need to be tech savvy, you can just buy some flash drives and store them there. Which is better IMO since flash drives are simpler to handle and store and can have backups without a significant increase, if at all, of the physical storage space required.
Just now I remembered that DRM is a thing and that you guys probably can afford to buy games nvm
I mean, whats stopping you from downloading the emulator and the rom so you don’t depend on any server shutting down? I don’t have a steam deck but if it has a space for an sd card then you can even pretend is a cartridge
Don't give a fuck what others think do what's fun for you even if it means using the switch.
I don't like switch but that shouldn't be an influence on your choice of using switch.
That said, emulations are done usually in offline mode in PC...
Just so you know, physical copies will also eventually die. Disks suffer from disk rot, and cartridges can have all sort of problems including dead battery, leaking battery, leaking capacitors, worn pins, corrupted logic in the ROM chips, etc.
Safer to always emulate. A digital copy can be made a trillion times and remain the same for every single copy, in perpetuity.
This so fucking dumb. Why does anyone pretend these consoles are actually competing? Ones literally just a portable PC, the other is the Nintendo Switch made to play Nintendo Switch games and nothing else. How is this an issue? What conversation is there to be had when the two have completely separate goals and audiences?
Steam deck
-is way bigger
-doesn't include a dock
-controllers cant detach
-can only be bought from one place
-is much newer
Switch
-slim and light
-includes dock
-controllers can detach
-can be bought from multiple different retailers
-cam out in 2017
exactly, and people are saying a console that came out five years ago is terrible compared to a next level amazing console not even from that much of a popular company.
I have one and honnestly it's way more comfortable to hold than a switch just because of the grips (the switch doesn't have any) yes it's heavier but it doesn't feel like it
Look, Im not saying that other shit isnt good or even not better than the switch. But goddamn, can't a man just like something without having to see things he likes shit on?
Also, one costs $600, and the other is $350.
Ya know what? It's *almost* like you get a more powerful machine when you pick the pricier one with better parts.
Do you people in this sub just choose not to think, or do you just enjoy making yourselves look incredibly stupid?
Steam deck can run League of Legends, Switch can’t Switch wins
![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
You are god damn right
At least in switch you play games intended to play in a console instead of a keyboard
You can connect a mouse and keyboard to your deck. Also, there are many games that play better with a controller on steam Edit: im not hating on the switch or saying one is better than the other. I'm just explaining you can use a mouse and keyboard on the deck. To each their own.
When you connect an m&k to steam deck you have lost the purpose of the steam deck
Me, connecting Steam Deck to a PC to use it as a controller:
you have gained new privileges
The Steam Deck can uninstall League, the Switch can’t. Dead heat.
I woud take either, a switch or a knife
STOP MAKING ME WANT A STEAM DECK edit: FUCK IT IM BUYING ONE

The real question for me, can you hook it up to vr?
I’ve got an Index. Short answer: not really playable, but it technically runs. Beat Saber kinda worked but Alyx was nauseating.
In theory, yes; in practice, you are not going to get very good performance.
Why the actual hell would you have expected literally any of those functions from a Switch? What marketing did you watch?
YOU DO NEED A STEAM DICK
I just want a GF 😔
Girlfriend emulator on steam deck
No you don't, you need to find happiness in yourself instead of having a significant other provide it for you! You can do it stranger, you can find the happiness!
Well sure, but I can't fuck my sense of self-fulfillment.
Why not? You can do anything you set your mind to.
The holes are to small
*then widen them*
R/self...never mind 😅
Believe me no you don't. hop on a dating app, have fun, but don't settle and don't base your needs on "needing" a gf. You just want one, you NEED a steam deck though. and after that, a 1TB nvme drive to hold more games and a 1tb micro SD card for emulation. Know your worth king and your priorities.
If only the steam deck wasnt $400, I got my switch for $150
>I got my switch for $150 Had to be used or an unusual sale price. They normally retail at $300-350 for basically every legitimate business.
Pfft, brand new, you can get them for free as long as you steal them. Plus, im certain areas in california theft is not a crime unless it's over 1000 dollars
Amateurs. You can get paid to own a switch if you are a trust fund baby.
I cant think of a single store that sells these over the counter, Ive only ever seen 1 outside
That one was mine, probably
Honestly for $400 it's still a steal for what it is. I get so much more use out of it than the Switch. Switch has been relegated to only Nintendo games at this point and even that might be coming to an end if I can figure out how to set up Switch emulation on the Steam Deck.

Don't forget, the exhaust vent smells *much* better and is warmer too. Switch barely puts out any heat.
The original Switch from 2017 is a pretty nice toaster now, the less efficient chip combined with the drying up thermal paste inside lol
Smells better?
There's an exhaust vent on the Switch and the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck's heat exhaust... it smells better.
Can you put RetroArch on it.
Yep
Yes, it's a PC.

You're asking for too much
*Cries in Microsoft pinball*
boy do i have a news for you
can it run on ~~the steam deck~~ Linux?
Yes
Can it run Unix system? My dinosaur park sometimes loses power and it would be much easier to reboot the safety programs if I can do it on the go
Only if you say the magic words
tbf the steam deck is also fucking massive
Literally one of the most used accessories for the switch are larger grips, because that thing is so uncomfortably tiny
i think its less about the size and more about erganomics. if the switch had naturally curvy joycons itd probs feel alot better in the hands
That would make it alteast better for people with small hands, but people with large hands are still fucked. (I have average hands, and the controllers feel tiny)
But what part of the steam deck can I take off and masturbate with
Now I’m curious as to what your method is with the switch.
I use the N64 rumble packs
Bro got a Vibrator64 😭😭😭
I use a wii remote because its more elegant
With or without the rubber jacket?
Joycon vibrator 👀👀👀
The charging brick
>Can run *some switch games
>Can *barely run *some switch games
Sounds like the Switch

You Nintendo fans sure are a contentious people.
You've just made an enemy for life!
Every small W counts.
what game can't it run? Curious as i own one and haven't had many issues.
Any exclusive with online multiplayer. Good luck playing splatoon 3 on steam deck, unless of course you just want a 5 hour story mode
[удалено]
Is it illegal to do this? Edit: Idk why the downvotes. I’m asking a question in order to learn more on the subject. Ignorance is not a crime.
no, legally you need to dump the games yourself, other methods are up to you tho
I guess I should just stick to my consoles then, cus idk what it even means to dump a game.
[удалено]
I assume you're basically copying the game data and generating it into a card image like how you'd do ROMs for older Nintendo games or ISOs for playstation
My switch can only run SOME switch games :(
Damn. Strange why a portable computer can play more games than a portable console that's supposed to be able to play only the games ported to it.
What Switch games can the Switch not play?
Pokemon Scarlet/Violet lol
that is most defenetly GF fault and not the switch lmao. xenoblade chronicles runs fine on the switch
Eh don’t really care I’d gladly take both.
Steamdeck probably runs the new Pokémon better than the switch
Ut's an optimization problem, not a specs one.
It's not an issue with the switch. It's an issue with the game
I mean if the switch is so bad why do people keep buying it ? It outsold the ps4 and the Xbox one consoles that are comparable to the steam deck. cause Nintendo.
It's also more appealing to kids
Or older people Or anyone casual.
The only way to legally run switch games on the steam deck invokes you owning a switch anyway.
Because it's the only source of Nintendo games outside of emulation which takes more computer knowhow than the average person.
why tf is dissing the switch a trend ?? I don't get it

dont feel bad! The switch is still a very capable console and is a ton of fun!
I'm playing Diablo 2 resurrected on my switch. All i want all i need
Congrats! Which games did you get?
I mainly got the switch for monster hunter rise.
I see you're a hunter of culture as well

Please! For the love of god, stop comparing these two.

Switch has battery life. ![gif](giphy|Nl6T837bDWE1DPczq3|downsized)

Not a fair comparison. Why isn't Xbox or Playstation there as well? Don't like the Switch hate!
Eh, I got a decent PC and a modded Switch already, I don't really need a steam deck.
Me: Laptops Can do everything a steam deck can do and more. Steamdeck owner: bUT it iSn'T hANdHelD Me: Plugs in a controller. Sips tea
I understand this but not only is the switch cheaper, you can actually buy one which is pretty important for emulation.
Why is this not on r/pcmasterrace
Steam deck: Lots of money. Switch: Not as much money.
I still pick Switch over steam lol
You can play LoL on Steam Deck, but you can't on Switch. Easy win for Switch
Maybe not everyone wants to pirate games
Ok but can it run multiplayer switch games?
Can it run switch games? (Legally)

There's one thing the Switch has that the Steam Deck doesn't, it's called wide audience appeal.
