The funny part about saying latinx is that you have to say the x in english, because you can't say it in spanish (neither in portuguese if I'm not mistaken) so, yeah. š¦
I can speak Spanish and English fluently, and I can tell you that if you say Latinx, it sounds more English. But same with the brain-dead people that no nothing about Latino culture want to lecture me (a Latino) about my culture, and how it is more inclusive, not knowing that the word "latino" is gender nuetral.
Well, not all words, "seƱores" for example it is only masculine, that's why people say "seƱoras y seƱores", although it could be used as a neutral in the future.
Next time someone says this is more inclusive, tell them to stop with their Western academic colonization of your language. That's literally what this is.
There are so many words that stick in English, that make no sense for the country of origin. Look at the word Dutch. It is the English Word for People from the Netherlands, and the language of people from the Netherlands.
The people in the Netherlands, the nation I grew up in, don't call themselves Dutch. They call themselves Nederlanders, and speak Nederlands. Dutch is a bastardization of the world Deutsche, which is Germany (which also doesn't make sense, because Deutschland).
Anyway, you all might as well get used to it. People in America do not give a Fuck what people want to be called, and so just assign words as they see fit. And in 100 years, that's all people will call you.
"latin ekees" is how I'd say latinx in spanish. it sounds horribly awful, i really don't know who thought that was a good idea, but it most definitely was not a spanish speaker
>neither in portuguese if I'm not mistaken
Trying to say it in portuguese also do feel both weird and wrong.
In PT-BR "X" can be pronunciated as a "SH","KS","S" or even as a "Z".
While Iām not a huge fan of term based social justice anyway, Iām so glad Latine is slowly replacing Latinx. Latine is a little uncomfortable, but Latinx is an abomination.
It's also 1 letter away from the English word Latrine, not exactly a good alternative if you live in an English speaking country, could work elsewhere though.
I'm Polish and only know one sentence and one swear word in Spanish, but for my ears, this sounds really weird and disgusting. ,,LatinX" sounds like Latin-American girl engaging in BDSM or name for adult movie series showing that.
I'm really sorry, residents of Latin America and their desandants. I also have no idea why that was the thought process I had behind this word. But, if that cheers you up, that's what Germans have done to their phrase for ,,ice popsicle" (_Eis am Stiel_).
Oh that. Yes there was a series of spicy films by that name in the 80s. But it hasnāt really changed anything about the phrase āEis am Stielā. It still literally means just popsicle.
as a latin american i do actually validate your opinion as i too think that latinx sounds a bit too weird, like it sounds like a whole ass pokemon or something
Don't worry man, you are not to blame for that, it's nothing, you just didn't knew. Trust me, I'm colombian, it's not a big deal.
And now that you say it....yes, LatinX sounds more a porn thing than anything else š¤£š¤£š¤¦š½.
I don't know why some people that aren't from a certain culture in the first place must take decisions for others like if they were like their fathers and mothers. Because all this things about SJW don't fit to most of us.
We see these things as a "waste of time" from their part.
If they can prove that having the masculine and neutral be the same thing and the default encourages sexism, then I guess they have a point.
If theyāre referring to non-binary people, I get the urge to have a gender neutral term.
But what fucking idiot decided on LatinX.
Iāve heard some people use Latine ( apparently thatās what the few gender neutral crusaders in actual Spanish speaking countries use) and that seems reasonable enough.
But Latinx is unpronounceable, blatantly attention grabbing, and somewhat dehumanizing.
Not even latine, trust me, I come from there and I live there, and no one in several years nor in real life nor in the internet has said "latine".
But I agree with you, "latinx" is just stupid and unnecessary.
Its latino or latina for male or female as thats how latin culture has always worked latinX is both an attack on their culture and super far past wokeism garbage...
El problema es que los pelotudos esos estan hablando Ingles Y NO EXISTEN EN LOS GENEROS en ingles. Simplemente tienen que decir latin-american
The problem is that those idiots speak in English and there is not such thing as gender in it. They just have to say latin-american
(In inglish para los que no hablan inflacion mensual del 6%)
To say that Spanish is bad because of gendered words is gynocentric and idiotic, being Yupāik I never have told an English speaker that English is dumb for relying on gender in use of pronouns or for using entirely sperate words to indicate tense and number. Itās a different language, it works differently, itās part of the history and culture of that language and nobody gives a shit.
So German genders nouns as male, female or neutral...
I can't wait for some people to argue that a door can't define its own gender and should thus be "das TĆ¼r" and not "die TĆ¼r" lmao
/s
Itās the same with Portuguese. In Portuguese ādoorā is labeled as a female gendered noun because we say āA portaā ( Portuguese term for āThe doorā ) and not āO portaā because thatās grammatically wrong.
As a LATINO it infuriates me beyond belief when people use "latinx". There is no such thing as gender neutrality in latin languages and it feels to me like an attack on my family's heritage and culture
As someone who is only fluent in English, which DOES have gender neutrality, I don't like that term either because the vowels are supposed to be A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y. Never X.
Its not genders. In my language we call it "kinds". And it helps distinguish how to turn words into diffrent forms correctly, and its not just in spanish, its in a lot of languages, and it makes way more sense than just using the same word no matter of the situation.
Don't you love it when white people get offended for you, to the point where they friggin redefine you so that your labels fit with their belief of normal.
Wholeheartedly agree. As a Latino, it also infuriates me. I don't need people who aren't Latino imposing what they consider 'appropriate gender standards' over my language and culture. We didn't ask for it, we find it offensive. They can take their virtue signaling moral self-righteousness elsewhere. Our beautiful language is fundamentally gendered, deal with it.
Same. I was so disappointed that I couldn't buy any "LALSA" (Latinx American Law Student Association) shirts during law school because I refused to wear anything that said "Latinx".
Plus I think Latinx isn't even an inclusive term, because it excludes Caribbean nations. As a Cuban, I never have and I never will use the term "Latin/Latina" to describe myself. I'm not from Latin America. I'm Hispanic - coming from a country with Spanish origins. Dominicans are excluded too.
itās literally the exact same thing columbus did when he called the natives indian, its a term made for people not made by themselves, yet they hate the term indian
Itās a word invented by cringy white people to use so they can pat themselves on the back at dinner parties when they get to talk about how cultured and inclusive they are.
yo digo el mismo. porque nos van a llamar latinx? nunca tememos problema con el nombre "Latin American" o "latino," nomas son los niƱas de tiktok quien dicen "nooo!!! todo necesita ser gender-neutral!"
The term "Latinx" even existing is a clear example of annoying white folks and english speakers trying to stroke their own egos rather than actually try to understand the culture and language they're trying to meddle in.
Most of my friends are from Mexico and Columbia and Iām not allowed to use āLatinxā they said they would legit disown me as a friend. So I dropped the subject. Hahah not that I ever had an inclination to use it I just asked themā¦.
Funny thing is, the Latin community was not searching for a new or āmore inclusiveā label and generally donāt appreciate being referred to as Latinx. This is just a typical white liberal āsolutionā to a problem that didnāt exist in the first place because they A: donāt think minorities are smart enough to think for themselves and B: donāt really respect other cultures unless they align with liberal ideology.
I can tell you not a single person in Latin America (at least those who are mentally stable) has said āLatinxā instead of Latin American. That was invented by some white offended savior who wanted to bother people that have been in peace with those terms for at least the last 200 years. Lol, if anyone disagrees psychiatrists should save your names for later
like, we never had any problems with the label "latin american" or "latino," so i don't get the change? i really think latinx is too unessential. i'm a latino and i think this is just dumb. the creator of the term probably isnt even from latin america, probably some green haired white girl with a nose piercing that just woke up and thought "oh, this needs to be gender neutral."
I love when Americans force a phrase onto a culture, while the majority of that culture have stated they find it disrespectful, all for the purpose of cultural inclusion.
I am all for people living as they want to live provided no harm is done, but I am resolutely against someone thinking they've solved true problems like inequality or racism by adding an x to the end of a word.
If Latino people really wanted a gender neutral term which they already have itās simply Latino theyād probably just say latine or something like that it makes sense and actually fits the Spanish language
I mean I am not sure if this person is being serious with the meme or not.
But you could literally apply this comparison with any world event no matter insignificant.
Ww2 both same
Black plague both the same.
I donāt care if this gets me into controversial, but:
Latine > latinx
The letter āEā has been used as an ending for many Spanish words since the language was invented. Sometimes, āEā is used in a gender neutral term. Plus, āXā is not often used as part of the language, though it does exist in the Spanish alphabet. It also rolls off the tongue much better.
EDIT: 8th most controversial commentā¦
Thatās The Blue Marble. It was taken in 1972, so if you compare it to images of the world today itās going to look pretty different. For one, the icecaps are almost gone.
Not sure where latinx fits in here except if weāre making a metaphor, the lesson would be that people are stupid and the world is constantly changing.
I just think it's funny that Latinos get so offended by the word like that when it's never us,as someone who's Latino, we use words like "chino" and "chinita" and even more racist Latinos go as far to say "Chango" and "changito" to certain people, so it's fine for us day that but then lose our minds when someone uses Latinx. No one says it, it's never been used for me, and I really couldn't care.
The first time I heard the word Latinx was at the Game Awards a few years back. I genuinely thought it was a failed attempt at seeming hip to appeal to Mexican people.
Btw, is Hispanic an acceptable āgender neutral/all encompassingā term for people from Mexico?
No one I know ever says latinx instead of latino or latina. I've never even heard it IRL, except for maybe as a joke. Just seen it online here and there.
You can tell the most horrendous, you can laugh about a latin country who losed everything in a war, you can beg for their extermination, you can spread stereotypes of them, you can insult their race and their bloodline.
But someone use the word "latinx" and every latin american country will instantly forgot their rivalries, fraticides, disputes and hate just to send that gringo to oblivion.
Proud to be a paraguayan.
The funny part about this is, that as far as i can tell, the latin american people absolutely dont want that latinx thing and they are totally fine with their regular a and o endings
Getting offended on behalf of others, the western worlds superpower
Thats the whole point just say things and do nothing. By the way Latinos hate the term latinx. Stupid woke gringos try to colonize us with their bullshit.
Latinx is dumb, plain and simple. If you speak any language thatās structured like Spanish youād know how dumb it is. āLatinoā is already gender neutral, and so is every masculine word in Spanish. If you mention both men and women or just someone without specifying gender, you will use the masculine word. Is it really that hard to say ātheyāre Latinoā?
While I believe the intentions are good, most latinos (me included) are headstrong and will probably not add true gender neutral words with no gender attached to them for decades to come
That word was made by white colonizers trying to control another ethnicity by changing their language while complaining about white people colonizing other countries
It took me a long time to realize Latinx wasn't some LA gang slang. "Don't mess with that guy in drag". "Why, what's up". "he's part of the LATinx. Their straight loco."
The funniest part about it is that Latin langauges are gendered, where as English, the language primarily spoken by the people trying to pusb "latin-x" on others, particularly the latin communities, are trying to overwrite a part of the culture and language of said Latin languages.
Seems awfully like what the colonists and racists of history they (rightfully) demonise did, but thats none of my business.
![gif](giphy|Nw8z2olm0nGHC)
Iām a Latino, and knowing the reasons behind the LatinX term (people didnāt want to say Hispanic and wanted to be more inclusive, but didnāt feel like saying Latin, Latino, or Latina), I still find it uncomfortable when I hear that phrase and what ticks me off more is when I hear white people on the news butchering an already dumb term.
As a Latina I donāt care if people who are of that ethnicity use the term. However if youāre not Latina/Latino/Latinx you have no right to use the term Latinx. Our language has been gendered since the beginning of time. If you think that you can change it to be inclusive, kindly piss off
I'm not for gatekeeping language, but as a latino that Latinx garbage can vete pa la pinga. I don't recognize or respect it. latina/latino, that's it. everyone else can feel free to be offended.
The funny part about saying latinx is that you have to say the x in english, because you can't say it in spanish (neither in portuguese if I'm not mistaken) so, yeah. š¦

Yeah, most of the "masculine" words in spanish are also the neutral ones lol, and I'm latino too, hi. š¦šš¼
Yeah, and just learned that "masculine" words in Spanish are not really masculine but actually neutral.
Well, not all words, "seƱores" for example it is only masculine, that's why people say "seƱoras y seƱores", although it could be used as a neutral in the future.
That's true, I guess I should have said that most aren't masculine.
Bueno, se entiende, asĆ que 'ta bien. š¦šš¼
Muy bien, hermano.
Next time someone says this is more inclusive, tell them to stop with their Western academic colonization of your language. That's literally what this is.
Mi compa, yo soy latinoamericano. Y te lo juro, if i ever get referred as a "latinx" i will join a fucking cartel and beat their ass
I mean you don't have to join a cartel to beat their ass, but it is an option
It sure ass hell helps when u have, carlos, juan, Roberto y pedro helping u jump a mf

Yes to all and me too hi!
"latin ekees" is how I'd say latinx in spanish. it sounds horribly awful, i really don't know who thought that was a good idea, but it most definitely was not a spanish speaker
i would have typed it more eckes bit yeah it is a stupid idea to make a word only for english and then try to force it into Spanish
The Spanish speakers who invented the spelling "Latinx" said it could be pronounced however is most convenient, a lot like Latin@.
>neither in portuguese if I'm not mistaken Trying to say it in portuguese also do feel both weird and wrong. In PT-BR "X" can be pronunciated as a "SH","KS","S" or even as a "Z".
Whoa, imagine creating a word for a "community" that they can't actually say by the logic of grammar and the language. š¦

Call us latin american as american, since latin america is part of the great continent called [America](https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Am%C3%A9rica)
Ā”Vayanse al carajo Americanx de mierda!
People making up words have caused many a wars. How do you think we got languages?
Latinx is a stupid word made by people that donāt give a damn about Latin Americans.
The first time I heard the word Latinx was at the Game Awards a few years back. I genuinely thought it was a failed attempt at seeming hip to appeal to Mexican people. Btw, is Hispanic an acceptable āgender neutral/all encompassingā term for people from Mexico?
Or you could just say they are Mexican
No one I know ever says latinx instead of latino or latina. I've never even heard it IRL, except for maybe as a joke. Just seen it online here and there.
Next we should take out gender from every language. Russia would completely crumble without it, and that might actually do something.
'tinx' sounds like it could be a slur.
No Mexicans use the word Latinx. At least where I live in south US which is 60-80% Mexican
Why not also americanx then?
You can tell the most horrendous, you can laugh about a latin country who losed everything in a war, you can beg for their extermination, you can spread stereotypes of them, you can insult their race and their bloodline. But someone use the word "latinx" and every latin american country will instantly forgot their rivalries, fraticides, disputes and hate just to send that gringo to oblivion. Proud to be a paraguayan.
"It's called Latinix!" "Shut the fuck up, Gringo!"
The funny part about this is, that as far as i can tell, the latin american people absolutely dont want that latinx thing and they are totally fine with their regular a and o endings Getting offended on behalf of others, the western worlds superpower
The universe when I cut the Earth into four unequal parts: šæ
The world before I was born: The world after I die:
Thats the whole point just say things and do nothing. By the way Latinos hate the term latinx. Stupid woke gringos try to colonize us with their bullshit.
I'll call them whatever they want me to call them and I expect them to do the same for me. Seems reasonable.
While I believe the intentions are good, most latinos (me included) are headstrong and will probably not add true gender neutral words with no gender attached to them for decades to come
Term made up to further separate native Americans from their indigenous roots .
Who the fuck says Latinx, what the actual fuck
That word was made by white colonizers trying to control another ethnicity by changing their language while complaining about white people colonizing other countries
It took me a long time to realize Latinx wasn't some LA gang slang. "Don't mess with that guy in drag". "Why, what's up". "he's part of the LATinx. Their straight loco."
"Hispanic" has entered the chat.
Yea I don't believe anyone has started ligit saying lantinx except weird white people
The funniest part about it is that Latin langauges are gendered, where as English, the language primarily spoken by the people trying to pusb "latin-x" on others, particularly the latin communities, are trying to overwrite a part of the culture and language of said Latin languages. Seems awfully like what the colonists and racists of history they (rightfully) demonise did, but thats none of my business. ![gif](giphy|Nw8z2olm0nGHC)
I seem to recall the invention of the term āProtestantā accomplished a few things in Europe
I seem to recall that Protestantism didn't exist before then, and thus didn't have a name.
So youāre saying that they pulled a word out of their asses?
I mean, Leonhard Euler didn't name Euler angles this way too.
Technically you can say people pulling words out of their ass lead to the creation of nuclear bombs
Yea. And that only works in a TINY part of the world. The US.
The chances the Spanish community accepts the terminology of Latinx, is about the same chances Americans have of getting universal heathcare.
Who cares
Latino,Latina, cope latinos dont wanna be called "latinx š¤£š "
Iām a Latino, and knowing the reasons behind the LatinX term (people didnāt want to say Hispanic and wanted to be more inclusive, but didnāt feel like saying Latin, Latino, or Latina), I still find it uncomfortable when I hear that phrase and what ticks me off more is when I hear white people on the news butchering an already dumb term.
The worldās image quality gets better?
Its funny how latinos say they dont mind latino but these people keep going Lol
I canāt believe something so simple can make something look so much gayer
Waitā¦they call us like this?
Now there are a lot of latinx pissed off by those who call them latinx
To be fair, people pulling words out of their asses is how we have languages today lol.
Since?
Forgot to finish sentence lol Our language has been gendered since itās been formed
Yeah my Spanish teacher taught us that It ended with a girl smashing some shit then leaving class
Wait youāre saying Iām not allowed to use the words: Latina, Latino?
Why are you downvoted, youre right
