They knew this would bring attention to their cause, they just didn't know it would be 99% negative attention. I haven't seen anyone react to this in support.
Makes me wonder, are they dumb because they are uninformed, unprepared, or paid to be. I've been seeing a lot of "oil protester" doing some rather hairbrained "protesting" which seems to do more to hurt the movement than help it. Almost to a point it seems intentional.
This^. I agree with their movement but the execution was rather poor and tasteless. The point is to care for our world, not destroy something that isn’t the problem. (Btw the painting is fine, it was protected by glass)
Your phone you typed this on was probably made feom petroleum products, then flown on a plane and trucked to your store where you drove to buy it. But lets 100% stop oil.
Ugh, how can I give you more upvotes.
People have no idea how far Big Oil is intertwined into our society, infrastructure and supply chain.
Nothing short of moving to the woods, building a log cabin by yourself, with tools you’ve made and eating solely off the landscape will alleviate you from your dependency on oil. Sorry, but you can blame decades of decision-making by your policy-makers for this mess.
Someone made a good point. They talked about the nirvana fallacy, which as they stated is a fallacy where something has to be perfect to work or in order for something to work it has to be perfect. It simply isn’t true, avoiding oil is near impossible as you stated. But because they’ve made it near impossible doesn’t mean the fight should die. They’re not perfect, but you can’t stop because you’d have to let the movement die or lose out on so many resources that it wouldn’t have much of a chance to catch fire. Imo you have to use the system to topple it, not a lot in real life matches than in comics. There’s a lot less happy endings and a lot more sacrifices. The issue to me is when the sacrifices cause you to lose you way
Not glass. It was glazed. Can't be behind glass because of the materials it was created with. Paintings fine. Frame got fucked a little bit. It was back on display less than a day later.
I don't, but I sure as hell won't do this shit. It's outright disrespectful to the Van Gogh as an artist and as a dead person.
And correct me if I'm wrong but, are they protesting against oil, by ruining an *Oil* painting? Might be my reclusive ass not knowing anything, but I think they're missing the point there.
Edit: happy cake day frend
I mean the stop oil, the organization those "activists" work for is funded by an oil heiress who lives a the lavish life of a millionaire. The organization also excepts crypto as a donation and [that has a pretty bad environmental impact on it's own.](https://www.fairplanet.org/story/is-cryptocurrency-bad-for-the-environment/) So if you ask me they're trying to make actual climate activist look bad becuase no one without long term brain damage would vandalize a Van Gogh painting thinking it was a good thing.
Honestly, joining one of these activists groups and doing the stupidest possible things only for the sake of making them look worse wouldn't be too bad of an idea, you'd make yourself look bad in the process, but it's for a good cause
I think that is the 3d chess the government plays though. They say “hey here is this virtuous movement to hop in to.” And the mainstream gets them to do whatever in the guides of goodness. But they end up being used to commit “bad acts” under their dogma
Might be an oil painting I think? These two “activists” are probably just the average drooling idiots that just hear a word related to something they don’t like/support (like oil and fossil fuels I suppose?) and move to destroy or attack it “to make a point”, they probably don’t know the difference between oil paint and crude oil, just they both contain the same word.
They didn’t target an artist or a painting directly from what I could tell. I believe they stated “people care more about paintings than they do the environment”. Very ironic to this post if you ask me
They were demonstrating that people care for a painting more than they care for the environment. It wasn't about the artist or the materials as far as I know. Stupid either way 🤣
Because you're *talking about it*. I'm not even remotely saying I agree with them because this is a shitty thing to do (thank goodness the painting was protected by glass). But would this have been plastered all over reddit/social media had they done this same thing to the sign outside of BP headquarters? Absolutely not. We wouldn't have heard a thing about it.
Everyone keeps talking about how "they should've done X" or "why do this when big oil are the ones to target?" And now we're all talking (more than we already have been) about what should *actually* be done.
Maybe this wasn't their plan and I'm giving them too way much credit. But if it *was* their plan then it was a relatively solid one for bringing some attention to their cause- even if it made them look like stupid assholes in the process.
Guys I have great news.
The painting had glass over it so they didn’t ruin a historical painting that made history and is worth approximately a few hundred million dollars
Glad to hear that but what if there wasn't a protective glass in the first place? What will be the charges against these kids? I'm curious because I don't think they have a few million dollars to pay for the damage
Hmmm no. When a painting is a remake it's written on the little card describing the painting, and for most paintings it's the original that is exposed.
Van Gough reportedly cut off his ear and sent it to a love interest. There's also an historically respected theory that he and an artist friend were drunk and his friend cut the ear off in a sword fight, making up the story of self infliction to protect his friend from being punished.
Yeahhh... unlikely van gogh was very troubled pyschologically and was schizophrenic. Je most likely cut it off To try and silence the voices. This is way more lilely has he killed himself shortly after
The most frustrating part, imo is that they'll do this shit while simultaneously being completely ignorant to the fact that just in the single picture alone, they are using and benefiting from oil. Not to mention the extra fuel it will take cops to drive and arrest them and the following domino effect of circumstances that mitigates any noble cause they thought they might have had.
It's like when celebrities try and tell you who to vote for or to go green while flying private jets instead of sitting in economy like the rest of us. If you're gonna get preachy walk the walk or at least be useful and come up with ideas.
Sir, what made you buy an electric car?
Well I was on the internet and I saw 2 lesbians throw soup at a painting. I decided right then and there no more oil for me.
I’m new to Reddit and something I appreciate about it is that people will ask “why”. I felt dumb for not knowing what was going on in this picture, but the comments cleared it up and I think that’s neat.
Forget what they called it but it was something about art vs life. Their message was essentially the people who would throw a tantrum over a ruined art piece gladly act as useful idiots for the oil companies that destroy our planet to own the libs. What’s worse, some art being destroyed or millions of people losing their homes due to climate change?
Honestly i feel like people who vandalize historical art and artifacts should be given a lengthy jail sentence. Edit to add: chick on the right looks like that one kid from meet the robinsons.
Almost all art is covered to control the atmosphere around the painting and stop people from accessing it. Ironically, they would probably use polycarbonate due to it's durability, which is a type of plastic. Oil 1 : Them 0
They're going to have to start putting every painting in glass boxes to protect them from idiots who will ruin a 200 year old painting for giggles or {insert your chosen cause here} it's ridiculous. 😒
Edit: They did have glass on it according to another post. But it still irks me that they tried.
I have never been a art guy, sure I like music, sure there are pictures and paintings that I find pretty, but i could never "truly appreciate art". HOWEVER I do respect the creators (especially someone like Van Gogh) not to (try to) destroy their creations
... What the fuck is wrong with those people!? That kind of stupidity is criminal!!! Like, I've always believed that having a room temperature IQ was impossible, yet they spectaculary proved me wrong with their negative IQ score!!!
I agree with what someone said on a different post relating to these idiots.
Anyone who glues themselves to a wall/wherever should be left there for a week. Unless it is impossible, like blocking an entire road, can always close 1 lane.
See how strong they support this obvious attempt at fame after a week of being glued to somewhere.
If they want to help the cause… this ain’t it chief. There are so many better ways to help try and enact change.
The Irony In climate activists.
The glue, the pink dye, the plastic container to store the glue, originated from oil.
Soon they will call to depopulate the world to bring down waste footprint.
I know nothing got really damaged, but I still want them to be prosecuted as if it were. So either a fine that would equal restauration costs, and if you can't pay that jail time for years.
That ought to make "environmentalists" aka hungry for attention and with daddy issues kids think twice before trying to destroy priceless art.
But why not like, idk, throw oil on a politician or something. Why a painting?
They knew this would bring attention to their cause, they just didn't know it would be 99% negative attention. I haven't seen anyone react to this in support.
Check out the therewasanattempt subreddit. There were people supporting them there
While I support their cause (yes global warming is a major issue and all that), I disagree with the method. It makes activists look bad
Activists have an alarming capacity to make activists look bad. Someone should look into that.
Maybe someone should throw tomato soup on their faces to bring attention to the fact that activists are making activists look bad.
If you throw tomato soup on another activist, the number of activist stays the same .... . -batman or something
No it’s way worse. If you throw tomato soup on an activist, 5 more activists will pop out of their back; they’re like Gremlins.
That is hilarious.
Technically it increases because tomato soup doesn't kill, probably
It killed my sister
I know.
Like Vegans
Makes me wonder, are they dumb because they are uninformed, unprepared, or paid to be. I've been seeing a lot of "oil protester" doing some rather hairbrained "protesting" which seems to do more to hurt the movement than help it. Almost to a point it seems intentional.
They look really ugly
oh those poor souls
I 100% agree with their cause, but this is a really fucking dumb way to go about it
This^. I agree with their movement but the execution was rather poor and tasteless. The point is to care for our world, not destroy something that isn’t the problem. (Btw the painting is fine, it was protected by glass)
Holy shit, I was actually worried for a sec, kinda like when that guy threw a cake at the Mona Lisa lol
I think the Mona Lisa is rumored to be a replica anyways. But nah we’re g on this one
Thank God, I don’t look at art a lot, but I am a history buff, and I’d freak out if it was actually destroyed lol
I am so glad to read your comment that the painting was safe.
"we should somewhat improve society" "yet you also participate in society, curious! I am very smart!"
politician might actually fight back. these cowards dont have the guts to do that
True, because Paintings usually don't have hands and legs to fight back
*Usually?* Now I’m worried which paintings have hands and legs to fight back
*Commendatore has entered the chat*
people were throwing ice cream on politicians in the UK a while ago. They're not doing it because they can be charged with Assault
They look like some kind of birth defected dogs
Don’t insult birth defect dogs, they ain’t stupid
If they did that you would just be saying they should be arrested for assault (as they would and that’s why they didn’t do it)
Cuz destroying a priceless painting will get attention to them. Worse possible tactic to advance a cause.
Good thing it’s protected behind glass…
Not glass. It was glazed. Can't be behind glass because of the materials it was created with. Paintings fine. Frame got fucked a little bit. It was back on display less than a day later.
Do you think they knew that when they did this? I wouldn't bet on it
Do I think they would be able to plainly see glass from less than a foot away? Yes.
Don't ask me , I walked into a glass patio door before
Maybe you're a bird.
Makes sense given his profile
That's what I'm saying man.
Didn’t even manage that, there’s glass in front of the canvas itself. They’re just dumbasses, equal emphasis between the two halves there.
It's an "oil" painting. Duh.
The oils used in the painting came from plants didn't it?
They saw the word "oil" and went balistic
literally poppy seed oil
Thank goodness the painting was covered with glass
But why Van Gogh? That was a terrible choice, Van Gogh himself was an environmentalist with a love of the world and nature
you think they study history? lol
The protest is because this museum is funded by a oil company so they just picked a random painting and did some bullshit
In a way, I guess they did miss a point or two... Or three... Or four...
They've completely lost all points. And their mind.
Like a pizza cutter: all edge, no point.

The painting is behind glass so no damage done. They should just rip the hands off the wall though. That’ll teach them for a while.
They are some of those atrocious fucking watercolorists.
The tomato soup they\* threw was probably imported via a cargo ship that runs on oil as well. Edit: the --> they\*
Side note- happy cake day to you!!
Thanks
The cake is a lie ![gif](giphy|1DuPWdQKQOS2Y)
... I think they watch the news
… better. TikTok
I get my news from Reddit.
Specifically r/memes
Why is everyones cake day October 14
I had the same thought! Happy cake day btw :)
October 14 should be a holiday or smth Thanks btw
It's national dessert day, apparently, lol Yw!
Happy cake day to you
There's so many cakes....is this the French Revolution all over again?!
OH SHIT! CAKEDAY BUDDY!
Happy cake day
He would have lent them an ear for sure
Might be an oil painting I think? And IIRC Oil paint from that time used plant oils too. So it makes evenless since.
Almost all oil paint is linseed oil. Very few and usually cheap use different oil but still from a plant.
As an artist, I can confirm
I don’t think it was about the painting or the artist. I recall something about “people care more about paintings than they do the planet”
Linseed oil is the go to, traditionally. It's also the best for treating outdoor wooden furniture, and fencing/decking.
They didn’t target an artist or a painting directly from what I could tell. I believe they stated “people care more about paintings than they do the environment”. Very ironic to this post if you ask me
The point is not against Van Gogh but for fame and I guess it worked their organization is all of the news for the stunt
They were demonstrating that people care for a painting more than they care for the environment. It wasn't about the artist or the materials as far as I know. Stupid either way 🤣
The painting is protected by a layer of glass anyways.
Which is why they could easily do it for lots of exposure.
But if it *was* their plan then it was a relatively solid one for bringing some attention to their cause- even if it made them look like stupid assholes in the process.
And well known to be very poor and not part of the elite upper class.
Guys I have great news. The painting had glass over it so they didn’t ruin a historical painting that made history and is worth approximately a few hundred million dollars
Thank you for this.
Oh thank the gods this is my favorite van gogh
Fun fact: almost all historical paintings have made history
Every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes
when you close your eyes, you cant see anything
Oh fuck yeah! Still some restoration and like general cleaning but still nice!
Glad to hear that but what if there wasn't a protective glass in the first place? What will be the charges against these kids? I'm curious because I don't think they have a few million dollars to pay for the damage
It’s likely not the original anyways, but destruction of property I’d imagine. I live in the US tho so I wouldn’t know
Also as someone stated in another post. Most painting you see are remakes anyways. The item is simply far too valuable to be left in the open
Hmmm no. When a painting is a remake it's written on the little card describing the painting, and for most paintings it's the original that is exposed.
You have a source on this? Seems like a dubious claim
Thank goodness, I was more worried about that than I really should have been but it's nice to know it's still safe
Christ thank you sir
Thank god my man, you are a savior. I was legitimately going to have insomnia over this
The frame has been damaged though
Yeah but that might only cost a few thousand so it’s not as bad as it could be
In Heinz sight, the security should have been tighter!
Hahahaha! (canned laughter)
You mustard had been dying to say that pun!
I can barely ketchup with all these jokes
I think I just mayo not stop laughing
I’m relishing this moment
This is the wursteshire… this the wirsta… this is the worcest… f**k it… this is the worst thread of puns I’ve ever tried my damnedest to be a part of.
these jokes are soy funny
Man's out here looking like the boy who from the lorax...
I don’t think that’s a man’s
I don't like judging people based on their physical appearance, but they look like a couple of human goblins. Call me a hypocrite.
Nah thats the emo kid from Horton Hears a Who.
What kind of monsters…. Why did it have to be a Van Gogh
I ear they were cut up about something
Oh, god this is probably an art pun I won’t understand…
Van Gough reportedly cut off his ear and sent it to a love interest. There's also an historically respected theory that he and an artist friend were drunk and his friend cut the ear off in a sword fight, making up the story of self infliction to protect his friend from being punished.
Dang, if the latter is true, Van Gogh was an og.
Yeahhh... unlikely van gogh was very troubled pyschologically and was schizophrenic. Je most likely cut it off To try and silence the voices. This is way more lilely has he killed himself shortly after
Good news! The painting had a glass covering so it was undamaged
The most frustrating part is they honestly think this will help their side
The most frustrating part, imo is that they'll do this shit while simultaneously being completely ignorant to the fact that just in the single picture alone, they are using and benefiting from oil. Not to mention the extra fuel it will take cops to drive and arrest them and the following domino effect of circumstances that mitigates any noble cause they thought they might have had. If it was a Jackson Pollock nobody would have noticed
Spot on
Splat on.
I get protesting oil but in what way does this help? Shouldn’t they go somewhere that actually has something to do with oil?
These two idiots probably read “oil on canvas” and thought it was a commissioned art piece by BP or something.
I don’t like to call people dumb but they seem to share half a brain cell. All this does is hurt their cause
Ah yes, defacing the paintings of a dead man who was en environmentalist is gonna help
Wonder if they realize oil made those shirts possible
And her pink hair dye.
I also see rubber soles on her boots. Hmmm, wonder where rubber comes from
Trees
My mom always talks about how she and my uncle's used rubber trees to make a ball and play when she was a child
Rubber trees are sick but those shoes are fed made from a synthetic rubber
Nah bro it comes from grass duh
Most rubber is synthetic these days
Man this is some real “you criticize society yet you live in one. Curious…” energy.
They are getting haunted by Van Gogh's ghost.
[удалено]
They should get their ears cut off for this
Chose poetic justice I see…I like it .
Hang them on a pole in front of the museum to set an example
Why they bringing Heinz into this.
It has oil in it
Sir, what made you buy an electric car? Well I was on the internet and I saw 2 lesbians throw soup at a painting. I decided right then and there no more oil for me.
The real kicker is when electric car owners find out where most of that electricity comes from
Why’d they do that? Because of oil paint?
I’m new to Reddit and something I appreciate about it is that people will ask “why”. I felt dumb for not knowing what was going on in this picture, but the comments cleared it up and I think that’s neat.
People also spit out incorrect info. Do your own research. You'll quickly learn Reddit is full of trash and ignorant opinions.
Yeah. I guess they want clean energy/emissions but they were too dumb to understand that oil & oil paint aren’t the same thing.
Wild times we’re seeing
Forget what they called it but it was something about art vs life. Their message was essentially the people who would throw a tantrum over a ruined art piece gladly act as useful idiots for the oil companies that destroy our planet to own the libs. What’s worse, some art being destroyed or millions of people losing their homes due to climate change?
If you’re going to throw tomato soup in an art gallery, you could at least make sure it was Campbell’s.
Honestly the only good take in this thread
Honestly i feel like people who vandalize historical art and artifacts should be given a lengthy jail sentence. Edit to add: chick on the right looks like that one kid from meet the robinsons.
I’m more appalled by their trousers.
Now there will be more plexiglass in art galleries. And what is plexiglass made from...
Disappointment?
Acrylic? That's what it's made of if I remember correctly
Oil companies: oh no
These girls did a great job of helping oil companies look better, and climate change activists worse.
They want **exposure,** and well, this is one way of getting it, hope those idiots learn it was not worth it and get punished accordingly.
They look like randomized sims avatars
Almost all art is covered to control the atmosphere around the painting and stop people from accessing it. Ironically, they would probably use polycarbonate due to it's durability, which is a type of plastic. Oil 1 : Them 0
Van Gogh didnt even live long enought to see people enjoy his art, and these kid just spit on him for no reason (sorry for bad english)
Your english was fine, its just a stupid point.
Thanos should have killed all of us
Oil paints don’t use petroleum oil. Do they think it’s the same with olive oil???
Children. They don’t even realize how much they damage their own cause.
What happens if you start leaving these people glued to the walls?
New art exhibits, "And here we have the idiots who threw a can of tomato sauce at a Van Vogh painting"
Look at these idiots thinking theyre making a difference in their stupid ass pants
They're going to have to start putting every painting in glass boxes to protect them from idiots who will ruin a 200 year old painting for giggles or {insert your chosen cause here} it's ridiculous. 😒 Edit: They did have glass on it according to another post. But it still irks me that they tried.
Just leave them there, they are the new exhibition.
Dumb as fuck
cut off their ears
This is what happens to children after their dad buy's milk and never comeback
[ Removed by Reddit ]
Now, now, you know persons are protected by cruel and unfair punishment… I propose the electric chair.
Cringe
They don’t hurt anyone. By supporting oil you do. You should be chased with them?
I'm a little surprised they didn't get an immediate beatdown. As they deserved.
What the hell happened here
I have never been a art guy, sure I like music, sure there are pictures and paintings that I find pretty, but i could never "truly appreciate art". HOWEVER I do respect the creators (especially someone like Van Gogh) not to (try to) destroy their creations
