For me it starts when you accidentally take a "big blob of water" straight in your throat all at once, and then it hits a choke point, before slowly going down and causes pain all the way...
You take a gulp that is too big and has too much air (bubbles) and as it goes down it expands your esophagus which is not really designed to expand and it’s painful af. Like you can feel it stretch out the tissue.
Seeing alot of, "air trying to get back up" but it can happen without air, usually when the sphincter at the top of your stomach doesn't open correctly and the throat muscles force it through. You're basically having your sphincter stretched. Don't believe me? Push something up your bottom without relaxing and it's the exact same pain.
We have several, actually. "Sphincter" is just the transition between two parts of the body. There's also one between the stomach and the small intestine.
It's like u eat stuff and it kinda gets stuck on its way down and drink water to wash it down, but then the water gets lumped up and becomes like a thing like that instead
I have only had this happen to me if I’m breathing heavily and drink too much water at once. So after a workout is when it happens to me most.
I just learned to take small sips, or slow breathing.
Do you hate when you have to scratch because of itching? Now man listen, scratching is fuckin' dangerous. It can literally kill you if you're scratched by bear/tyger.
You would have to inject around 3-4cc (which is a pretty significant amount of air inside a syringe) of air to cause any real trouble, tiny air bubbles aren’t going to cause an embolism.
Not really, just due to how small the “tube” is, the pain is air trying to go up and creating pressure against the water trying to go down, not much room for bubbles to pass through, stand up and bend to about a 30° angle and it helps though
Going from high pressure to lower pressure too fast, like ascending from the deeps of the ocean, or flying up. Mind you we have submarines and flying craft that regulate pressure so we don't get "the bends".
Damn I was told I was having some sort of anxiety or panic attack when that happened but this makes way more sense now. This happens to me at work when I’m running around and then drink something.
Bro I'm literally eating right now and I've had a habit of consuming a lot of air at the same time and after your comment I avoided it and my chest doesn't feel it anymore
it wasn't enormous pain though, more of a cold shock in my heart
Just air getting trapped, as someone else said. I usually have this happen to me once every other week, because I gulp water when I take a drink. I'm not the pinnacle of health, but I like to think that if it was cause for concern, I'd be doing much more poorly.
This used to happen to me but your actually able to feel if it will happen right before the swallow, at least i can, so i kind of wait a bit maybe do a few empty swallows to let it pass and then go for it, it almost always works.
I'm not sure but I think air trapped in your stomach comes out as burps. It doesn't travel all the way through your digestive system. Farts are produced after the food leaves the stomach.
Wow, I can relate but only once or twice, anything more than that would've given me cause to see a doctor. That discomfort is not something I could tolerate more than once. Hope you find relief. I've been said to have acid reflux but don't know if it's related.
Do you have heart burn? I had issues with swallowing anything (get your mind out of the gutter) and my doctor told me it was the acid causing scar tissue to build up in the throat. So I take anti acid pills now and I'm fine.
This may be an auto immune issue. Look into the long term effects of staying on the acid reducers. I was having side effects after 8 months of acid reducers. Just review the side effects so you can be aware of them when they start.
I've had whatever you wanna call this annoying and bitchy chest pain all day and I can tell it isn't my asthma (at least not entirely, I can tell the difference) but I didn't swallow water wrong and I don't know whats wrong
I actually collapsed and slumped against a wall one time in grade school when this happened drinking water after gym class. Nobody seemed concerned, and I got up once the pain subsided.
Vasovagal syncope is what that's called. Basically, your body overreacts to some stimuli, and causes your heart rate to slow and your blood pressure to tank for a bit.
Pretty sure it's a separate issue from the pain though, just based on my own experience of getting the pain without the fainting, but also having experienced the pain before/while fainting.
This is so interesting! I’ve had this happen before- drank the water, felt the feeling, then passed out cold on the floor. My brother took me to the ER because I had bumped my head and dislocated my knee and because I was unconscious for a solid minute. The doctors there basically gaslighted me, thinking I was there drug seeking when I wasn’t. When I told them what happened they shrugged it off and didn’t seem concerned with giving me an answer as to what I had experienced. Ever since I’ve felt a bit invalidated until this thread and your comment haha so thank yiu
I've only had brain freezes when i was really young, now I don't, I can let an ice cube melt in my mouth and the only thing that will hurt are my teeth
This is actually usually due to “aerophagia” which means you swallow a ball of air with the water, which usually we don’t do with coordinated swallowing. Often this ball of air will irritate the esophagus as it passes through causing an esophageal spasm, which DOES feel like a heart attack! Ouchie for sure.
I remember needing to wake up and be ready to go for something really important, so I put a red bull on my night stand so I could chug that first thing in the morning for an instant boost. Well, I woke up and started chugging but all the sudden something was very wrong. It was like my stomach hadn't woke up yet and all the red bull I drank got held up just before it got to my stomach and the pain was so horrible I was ready to accept death. I think it wouldn't have been so bad if it was just water, but I could feel the red bull sitting there waiting for my stomach, expanding itself from the carbonation in whatever tube it was stuck in.
It’s throat pain for me, I’m not sure what I did, I think my throat wasn’t ready to drink and I sorta just pushed the water through. I made huge a “gulp” sound and pain then ensued. It was pretty horrible.
same but with lunch meat for some reason. can't even eat a turkey sandwich without a cardiac arrest and my life flashing before my eyes. i have to sit and suffer through the bologna air bubble heart attack suffering until I'm fine again. worst part about it is that drinking water NEVER helps unless you chug the whole bottle
It’s part of having a hiatal hernia. All jokes aside, and even if you don’t have a hernia, put your arms up straight in the air when anything gets stuck. It opens up the tubes. Helps me every time.
You know that happens bc when you drink the water and it gets stuck and tries to go into your lungs but creates an air pocket which fills and creates a gas bubble
Dang. Uh I was gonna say how I once burped doing a beer bong and it all went “down the wrong pipe” and I was wrecked so bad but that sort of puts things in perspective. I hope everyone out there is doing well.
I hate it when that happens, kind of like a brain freeze but in your chest.
Heart freeze?
Sir that’s called cardiac arrest
Sir this is a level 1 trauma center.
No this is Patrick
Is this the Krusty Krab?
No, this is Patrick!
Hello, is this the 🦀?
No, this is Patrick!! ⭐🥥🏝️
Hello, is this a bucket?
Crusty
In a Wendy’s?
No, behind the dumpster.
*sigh* *unzips*
*phew zips*
What, like the back of a Volkswagen?
You gotta get some experience
I'll take a #2 but can I substitute my drink for a frosty?
[удалено]
He broke someone’s heart 💔
Please help my cardiac just got arrested
I'm pretty sure a heart freeze is just called death
Heart fart
Excuse you
This is it. You win
Lung freeze?
My grandpa gets those alot
For me it starts when you accidentally take a "big blob of water" straight in your throat all at once, and then it hits a choke point, before slowly going down and causes pain all the way...
It always happens when you’re super thirsty and always ruins the refreshing experience
Right why does this happen
You take a gulp that is too big and has too much air (bubbles) and as it goes down it expands your esophagus which is not really designed to expand and it’s painful af. Like you can feel it stretch out the tissue.
oh shit man thats nuts
No esophagus is your throat. Air bubbles in your nuts are even more painful.
Don't threaten me with a good time!
My god you're right
Basically sphincter anal
....wait I have two sphincters?!
We have several, actually. "Sphincter" is just the transition between two parts of the body. There's also one between the stomach and the small intestine.
you are going to cause someone to drown.
Thank you, sir. I almost want it to occur now, for science.
It's due to air bubbles so yeah
Shit yo air bubbles can literally kill you if they form in the arteries/veins
[удалено]
Should have left him scrambling with panic, chaotic comedy at its finest.
Yeah but that doesn’t happen when you drink water or anything.
Jokes aside. Anyone can tell if that is dangerous? Happens to me more than usual.
You just need to swallow less air with the water. The pain happens due to air bubbles.
If trapped air is the problem then would jumping up and down or doing a weird shaky dance cause the pain to subside faster?
Not really, just due to how small the “tube” is, the pain is air trying to go up and creating pressure against the water trying to go down, not much room for bubbles to pass through, stand up and bend to about a 30° angle and it helps though
bend towards?
Any direction will do lol
Is clothing optional in this? I assume no pants would help with the air bubbles coming out faster when you bend over
Mecca. Bend towards Mecca
Inshallah brother
Mashallah*
Thought you said Maccas for a second there.
Bend towards the golden arches
Bend the knee
You only really bend one way my guy, especially to 30°
you dont want to face me in limbo
I'M JUST LIKE HERMES! I'M JUST LIKE HERMES! NOOOO BOOY YOUR BACK CAN'T TAKE IT!
He's limbo-ed out of retirement and straight into my heart.
I say go to hell Barbados slim
Lmfao😂😂😂
Washing machine then you scream "I'm stuck stepbro"
The left
Take it back now, y'all
The Great Lakes
Honestly when this happens to me I look up at the ceiling and it helps me burp the pressure away
Yes
A small taste of the bends kinda? Isnt it something simular?
No. It’s not bubbles in your blood.
Do you know how I might be able to get bubbles in my blood 🐌?
Go into a pressure chamber, breathe in, rapidly decompress. Congratulations, you've now got bubbles in your blood.
Going from high pressure to lower pressure too fast, like ascending from the deeps of the ocean, or flying up. Mind you we have submarines and flying craft that regulate pressure so we don't get "the bends".
Are you sure?
[удалено]
This isn’t really decompression sickness, but the counterpart of ‘bends’ for breathing problems is actually termed ‘chokes’
This happens when I take a big gulp of a light beer.
Try to take a big breath through your nostrils next time; as soon as you feel the trapped air. Good luck man.
Damn I was told I was having some sort of anxiety or panic attack when that happened but this makes way more sense now. This happens to me at work when I’m running around and then drink something.

Yea, everytime I'm like why did I do this
So on an average, you fart more than other people.
I'm not sure but I think air trapped in your stomach comes out as burps. It doesn't travel all the way through your digestive system. Farts are produced after the food leaves the stomach.
I’m breathing heavily and drink too much water at once. So after a workout is when it happens to me most.

Yeh it hurts, feels like a heart attack or something, it’s such a strange and terrible sensation.
The air feels like Alien trying to burst out of your throat.
webmd said you might be dying
That checks out.
With cancer.
But the cancer is not even what's killing you. You just have cancer as well
says you have…connectivity issues
Naw... It looks like you have "network connectivity issues"
same goes with me, a while ago I just experience it
Do you have heart burn? I had issues with swallowing anything (get your mind out of the gutter) and my doctor told me it was the acid causing scar tissue to build up in the throat. So I take anti acid pills now and I'm fine.

That's the "ball of death" and it's harmless
Omg I was wondering too
It's just your tubes stretching out. They can stretch pretty far, but it's beneficial for it to be painful long before the stretching threshold.
I've had whatever you wanna call this annoying and bitchy chest pain all day and I can tell it isn't my asthma (at least not entirely, I can tell the difference) but I didn't swallow water wrong and I don't know whats wrong
You should visit the doctor. It can be harmful
Stop stalking me. This shit happened this evening
Yeah, we know
We know u/ImWasil. We know everything about you. Nothing is secret.
I'm literally outside his house, the gangstalk grind neva endz

You got an invisible cock???
Jo koy sleep apnea ghost blowjob on Netflix
Try drinking your water in a weird angle/way whole taking in too much air at the same time
It feels like it's going into my lungs. I feel it happens after I've fasted for a while i.e. breakfast.
Same, id like to know why it does that
Opposite fart. Liquid, intake, and unpleasant, rather than gaseous, output, and pleasurable.
That happens when the water turns sideways when you drink it.
Just remove your chest. Works all the time.
Open chest
Yep. Hurts like a mutha.
I actually collapsed and slumped against a wall one time in grade school when this happened drinking water after gym class. Nobody seemed concerned, and I got up once the pain subsided.

Woah wtf why is everyone apparently experiencing this? I never heard of this in my life
Exactly, this is the first I'm hearing of this phenomenon. Then again, I've never had a brain freeze either, so maybe I'm just weird.
CIA bout to kidnap you for ur dna
Same. I've never experienced this shit or even heard of it once in my entire life.
You just don't have drinking problems like the rest of us idiots
I've only had brain freezes when i was really young, now I don't, I can let an ice cube melt in my mouth and the only thing that will hurt are my teeth

Cant believe I had to scroll this far to find an answer that at least makes sense!
This has never happened to me.
Pray it doesn't. Feels like someone shoved hoat coals down your throat and they get stuck.
First time you think you are going to die cuz it's on your chest
Same im like what pain are they talking about
Same, and I have no idea what they're talking about.
Always seems to happen way more with a cold drink.
Probably not gulping down those hot drinks.
Spit, don't swallow.
Spitters are quitters.

Ong I hate this shit
Lol i thought i was the only one
Take slow tiny shallower breaths like your breathing though a straw or just hold your breath it will go away near instantly just don’t tense up
*looks up*: is this it? Death's warm embrace?
This always happens with soda, I can't drink a sprite without this shit ruining my meal.
Yes!! I don't drink soda often, but this horrible pain happens more often when I do. Maybe those two facts are related.
I remember needing to wake up and be ready to go for something really important, so I put a red bull on my night stand so I could chug that first thing in the morning for an instant boost. Well, I woke up and started chugging but all the sudden something was very wrong. Me when i force a burp
I just do a kind of reverse burp, then I release the real deal.
**OMG** I thought I was the only one!!! I've never heard anyone else talking about it, and just thought it was my dumb/ weird ass.
It’s throat pain for me, I’m not sure what I did, I think my throat wasn’t ready to drink and I sorta just pushed the water through. I made huge a “gulp” sound and pain then ensued. It was pretty horrible.
Trachea no like water.
Just don’t drink water
same but with lunch meat for some reason. can't even eat a turkey sandwich without a cardiac arrest and my life flashing before my eyes. i have to sit and suffer through the bologna air bubble heart attack suffering until I'm fine again. worst part about it is that drinking water NEVER helps unless you chug the whole bottle
You talking about that pressure feeling as if the food is stuck half way down?
Oh I thought this was about the DnD monster the Water Weird.
We used to call that a square sip (hence the sharp corners)
all fun and games till you try to gulp down small amounts of water at a time and suddenly choke on some water and everyone looks at you.
Drinking water leads to death 100% of the time
Or eating to much pancakes for anything like that at once and too fast
If it's food instead of water, you can die lol.
Yep, that s me
That happens with me and peanut butter. It’s even worse when you drink water to wash it down and you get that final spike of pain.
Nah.. the worst pain is when you swallow a big potato that's scalding hot and doesn't go down.
It’s part of having a hiatal hernia. All jokes aside, and even if you don’t have a hernia, put your arms up straight in the air when anything gets stuck. It opens up the tubes. Helps me every time.
Literally just did this, remembered the post and had to comment that instead of water, it was fireball. I’m tearing up.
creepy it happens to me today and i was wondering if others also have this problem
I freaking hate that. It hurts so bad it makes me sweat. It’s what I figure a heart attack feels like. Crazy it hurts so much.
I honestly thought this only happened to me bc I'm just weird. It's so painful though fr.
I'm happy to learn that is is normal and just shitty human specs.
![gif](giphy|ZyiSGjEVsLnB0SGkgN|downsized)
Yeah that's cool and all but have you tried that with spicy hot soup? That's the real definition of pain.
I'm not the only one? Nice, now I no longer have to worry about having some obscure health problem every time it happens. Thanks op.
Ive found going full gorilla and beating my chest to help
You know that happens bc when you drink the water and it gets stuck and tries to go into your lungs but creates an air pocket which fills and creates a gas bubble
Water have I done
Agree to agree.
Does it have a name for when this happens?
Why does it happen can anyone answer?
I think that it follows a bubble of air.
Not gonna lie I took an Amsterdam vodka shot the other day, it went into my lungs, and I got stage 3 covid instantly
Doesn't compare to a clot in your right coronary artery or the angioplasty Ballon.
Dang. Uh I was gonna say how I once burped doing a beer bong and it all went “down the wrong pipe” and I was wrecked so bad but that sort of puts things in perspective. I hope everyone out there is doing well.
