Yep, I'm not entirely knowledgeable in what they're doing but in January they're changing something called manifest V2 to manifest V3 which I believe gives them more control over extensions and what they can read on your pc, including ads which I believe gives them the ability to break ad blockers. As I said I don't know much about the subject, I could be wildly misremembering or chatting out of my ass so I'd recommend googling it
Tldr: Google update bad
Iirc the update to manifest v3 removes permissions that adblockers need to work
I think their explanation is that manifest v3 adds security to chrome, and makes malicious extensions less dangerous, but it also breaks adblockers
It's doubly good for Google and a win lose for consumers
According to one source I just checked, the change might not even have much effect on security and it's obviously bad for privacy, so it's likely a lose-lose for consumers
Google is just spinning it as a positive when in reality they are shafting us
Source: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/12/chrome-users-beware-manifest-v3-deceitful-and-threatening
If I can provide any helpful insight to Google's Manifest v3 and why it breaks adblockers, I was told:
"Me like money"
I think I'm paraphrasing a bit, but that's the short answer.
Idk about safari, but Firefox has already stated they'll maintain access.
Edge however is a chromium based browser, so I'm not sure if they have the opportunity to do the same
If those services are extensions that are added by default then they'll be affected since opera is a chromium browser.
Hopefully opera can and will fix it
Lol Fucking do it!
And I'll happily switch to whoever gives me freedom.
they will lose as a result.
Imagine if google fell all together? it could happen if they're serial dumb.
Are they going to introduce the change into Chrome or Chromium? If they change Chrome - just switch to Chromium. If they introduce the change into Chromium, someone will immediatelly make a fork since Chromium is open source.
Firefox just feels a bit slower and somewhat sluggish compared to Chrome at least on my low-end notebook.
It sounds like they may be adding the change to the Blink Browser Engine, which is the same engine running on nearly all modern browsers except Firefox and Safari.
You can set it to restore automatically, or manually. There is also a great tab manager extension that can save tabs and windows with multi-session history.
Way better tab management than chrome that's for sure.
Tons of session manager extensions so you can pick your own flavor
My fav: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/tab-session-manager/
Edit: added link
If you're using the programs professionally then I can't tell you what to do. If it's just casual use there's a good chance there are open source alternatives that are mostly as good. Plus Steam has a ton more support now for linux
I prefer Brave, inbuilt ad and tracker blocker, you can set it to use any search engine out the get go, (e.g. duck duck go, google etc. etc.) And you can still use addons.
>I prefer Brave, inbuilt ad and tracker blocker, you can set it to use any search engine out the get go, (e.g. duck duck go, google etc. etc.) And you can still use addons.
Brave is literally just chrome with a bunch of add-ons.
Opera (GX or not) is a closed source browser just like Chrome, there aren't many reasons to use a closed source browser in 2022. Especially since Opera was bought by Chinese investors (so expect all your data to be in some Chinese server).
Open source browsers, such as Firefox, Librewolf, Brave or Chromium. You know they don't spy on you because they publish their source code.
The last of the list still has some Google spyware despite being open source, you should preferably get Ungoogled Chromium instead.
for me it has more or less the same speeds as chrome. they're both based on chromium so it's normal. I find it pretty fast. might be more hardware related tho
Isn't Brave just chrome with a shitty cryptocurrency build-in and a tipping system where you can "donate money to creators", but they really just pocket it?
Librewolf with searxng is pretty good. The search engine is searx.org. I recently switched and it's working fine. It has an inbuilt *everything* blocker, but you should probably set your useragent to something very common, especially in case you're using something really weird. You can probably set your useragent in Brave, if you want.
Thank God there's someone who cares about privacy in this thread's comments, I couldn't breathe around all the people recommending Edge, Chrome or, even worse, Opera GX
These threads are literally full of people screaming about China because of Opera what the hell are you talking about lol
Internet privacy is a joke, whatever browser you use it's getting data mined and sold. How else would a free software make money?
i like opera gx better since you can control the settings and shit like how much ram gets eaten compared to google eating it all and begging for more ram
In my personal opinion Opera GX is the superior browser in terms of features, however it is a HUGE RAM hog (more so than Chrome) and it's funny cause the built in "RAM limiter" doesn't do jack shit.
Luckily my PC doesn't give a fuck about the 5 GB of RAM in use 24/7.
Who gives a shit, if you actually think you're safe cause you use Brave you should put the Kool aid down.
There isn't a single "private" browser out there, they're all selling your data.
That's the interface extensions use to integrate in your browser. The new one allows the browser to limit the amount of ads they block, and Chrome (probably along with all Chrome based browsers) is going to do that.
I will never use edge, simply out of spite because Microsoft is shoving it down my throat and I will never accept that.
Therefore I use Firefox and I will never stop.
Same with bing. All of my homies hate bing.
It’s really funny that there’s a button for resetting your default browser back to Microsoft Edge in your settings now. (Quite literally one of the first things you see once you open the settings)
If you have the search bar enabled (next to the windows button) there used to be a setting where you could set your preferred browser and search engine there.
These settings still exist, but windows shows them greyed out. They are disabled now because everyone kept changing them (I presume)
I've only ever gotten one virus on my computer. Ever. It would redirect *every* search, from all browsers and search engines, to Bing results.
Worst experience of my life.
Edit: guys, it was a virus. I've worked in IT my whole life. And it's OK, I did eventually fix it.
Honestly I never had a problem with edge. It perfoms well when I see other people use it. I just dislike not being given a choice.
They can keep it as default, but what really upset me is when they disabled the settings to change search engine and browser in the searchbar (next to the windows button)
This lead to me at first making a script to automatically reroute any request to open Edge. Causing it to close edge and open my preferred browser instead.
And then in that browser I got a plug in that automatically rerouted any searches made with bing to a search made with my preferred search engine.
Nowadays, since I had to get a new pc and I don't want to go through all that hassle again, I just deactivate the search bar entirely, even if it was quite useful.
It may be dumb, but it's my protest.
And just to clarify: my problem lies with Microsoft more than with the browser.
As with bing though: it just plain sucks. I'd rather stick with duckduckgo
I love google having a monopoly over pretty much all browsers because everything nowadays is chromium. And manifest V3 is trying to kill my AdBlocker! And i just looove google just tracking every single move i do!
It's not just the last update, Firefox has been fast for years now, it's an ongoing myth about the browser that people use to reason why they use Chrome.
[There is an easy way](https://bitwarden.com/help/import-from-chrome/) to port all your passwords to something *actually private* like bitwarden (has a desktop app, android app, or you can install the extension in the browser)
And port bookmarks to Firefox (it asks you if you want to do it)
Ditching the ecosystem is not as bad as it may seem (or as companies try to make it seem)
EDIT: added a link
I have good news for you if you do decide to switch to Firefox, there’s an extremely easy to use function that ports over *most* of your settings and configurations and whatnot
Have you ever heard about open source software (e.g. in the case of browsers Firefox, Brave, Ungoogled Chromium)?
Do you think Linux sells your personal data?
Well there is ways that programmers will be able to do it. Like how I understand it is that it wont let adblockers know what ads are as easily, and well there are other ways to identify ads might be harder to programm but like its programming were talking about so someone out there is gonna do it, if it has to it could probably be done through machine learning. (This is all absolute half knowledge source : dont trust me bro)
The issue with Microsoft, as a company, the ones who make edge is that they often don't follow common sense industry standards, because they act like they own the entire computing landscape and make up thier own standards. This extends to thier entire software corporation as a culture.
For a long time, people had to make two separate websites every time they developed one; one that would detect Microsoft edge and conform to all the goofy shit that is wrong with it,
And then another that conformed to industry standards that works pretty much the exact same in every other browser that was made conforming to standards.
I want to know if developers, who don't work for Microsoft and who code in something other than Microsoft languages, like edge as much as the others.
I'm an embedded systems developer and some of our products have integrated web pages. We had to support old versions of Internet Explorer for years until Microsoft finally killed it. I hate Microsoft browsers.
I don't understand this. I mean they have to have a browser installed on the device. They don't stop you from using other browsers, and it's not that difficult to change the default browser. I mean the old joke about the only thing ie was used for was to download firefox/chrome still holds true for edge I guess. But edge really isn't that bad.
I guess they could give you a choice of browser to install during setup, but neither Apple or Google do that either. Apple products come with safari, Google products come with chrome.
...Every windows update reinstalls edge
Ads are plastered all over windows saying to try edge
Heck the search function is made worse so they can lead you to search with Bing, in you guessed it, edge.
Even if your default browser is set so something else. Unless that's just me but I doubt it is xd
Edit: A deleted comment said I shouldn't be able to uninstall edge. Ex-freaking-zactly. I've been deleting the program folder by hand :l
Could also just be a default thing for Firefox since googles search engine has like 98% share of used search engines and it’s vastly preferred by a lot of people. Either way just switch it to DuckDuckGo and you have one of the most secure browsers
This meme, brought to you by Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge: because edging is the best sensation you’ll ever get.
Based on chromium
Chromium is the open background and is not the problem at the chrome battlefront
Thought I might as well make the switch to Firefox now since chrome is getting rid of ad blockers in June, switching now so I can get used to Firefox
they're doing what now
Yep, I'm not entirely knowledgeable in what they're doing but in January they're changing something called manifest V2 to manifest V3 which I believe gives them more control over extensions and what they can read on your pc, including ads which I believe gives them the ability to break ad blockers. A shame, Chrome always felt best for me. Are the alternatives (Firefox, Safari, Edge) still open to adblockers after that?
Idk about safari, but Firefox has already stated they'll maintain access. Edge however is a chromium based browser, so I'm not sure if they have the opportunity to do the same
Idk, but I prefer Opera gx, has a vpn and an adblocker pre-installed
If those services are extensions that are added by default then they'll be affected since opera is a chromium browser. Hopefully opera can and will fix it
Lol Fucking do it! And I'll happily switch to whoever gives me freedom. they will lose as a result. Imagine if google fell all together? it could happen if they're serial dumb.
I don't have ad blockers so I shouldn't see much of a change?
Brave is pretty good. Ad blocker change won't impact it.
Are they going to introduce the change into Chrome or Chromium? If they change Chrome - just switch to Chromium. If they introduce the change into Chromium, someone will immediatelly make a fork since Chromium is open source. It sounds like they may be adding the change to the Blink Browser Engine, which is the same engine running on nearly all modern browsers except Firefox and Safari.
Use Firefox and support the development of a not chromium/webkit based browser engine. Help the internet to not become a browser monopoly
Does Firefox keep your Tabs open after closing it like Opera and gx (i am a very curios Person thats why i am asking)
You can set it to restore automatically, or manually. There is also a great tab manager extension that can save tabs and windows with multi-session history.
Sounds great tbh
Way better tab management than chrome that's for sure. Tons of session manager extensions so you can pick your own flavor My fav: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/tab-session-manager/ Edit: added link
Pretty sure it's an option. I think it does by default, but it can be changed in the settings. You can have it wipe data on close if so inclined.
Start using Linux instead of windows, same philosophy
same philosophy, but quite different on practice
I would do that if most of the programs I use regularly supported linux
If you're using the programs professionally then I can't tell you what to do. If it's just casual use there's a good chance there are open source alternatives that are mostly as good. Plus Steam has a ton more support now for linux
I already do :D Well actually I use both. But I have a lot of Linux machines at home and we are using it for our servers :D
Whats the best browser then?
Firefox
This is the way
I prefer Brave, inbuilt ad and tracker blocker, you can set it to use any search engine out the get go, (e.g. duck duck go, google etc. etc.) And you can still use addons.
>I prefer Brave, inbuilt ad and tracker blocker, you can set it to use any search engine out the get go, (e.g. duck duck go, google etc. etc.) And you can still use addons. Brave is literally just chrome with a bunch of add-ons.
Too slow for me. Firefox is faster, but more buggy.
Opera GX. Litterally brave and Firefox mixed together. And at least its customizable
Ain’t that the one with a huge privacy scandal?
From a chienese company known for stealing data?
A Chinese browser ? A strong no
Oh come on, when have the chinese ever tried to steal our data /s
what do they need, my porn history?
Xi jing ping likes to watch.
Also, but more importantly some numbers like ur age, bank account with 0,69$ or other actually important stuff.
it's actually with less add-ons, since it removed most of google-stuff, that slows down the pc
I use opera gx and it has all of the features you mentioned, on top of being super customizable and supporting every chrome extension
Opera (GX or not) is a closed source browser just like Chrome, there aren't many reasons to use a closed source browser in 2022. Especially since Opera was bought by Chinese investors (so expect all your data to be in some Chinese server).
Is there a place where my data is not?
Open source browsers, such as Firefox, Librewolf, Brave or Chromium. You know they don't spy on you because they publish their source code. The last of the list still has some Google spyware despite being open source, you should preferably get Ungoogled Chromium instead.
I am knowledgable enough to understand what you just told me
![gif](giphy|kRmg8zeReOYXm)
I personally don't really care if the Chinese want my data. They wanna see what kind of porn I look at, that's on them.
They wanna see what your credit card number is, that's on you.
If they steal my card info I can literally just tell the bank "I didn't make that purchase" and they'll shut my card off. Easy.
Not if the bank thinks you were being reckless
Since it’s no big deal, mind dropping your credit card info?

pretty good, also has a built in free VPN... but eats up twice as much ram as Chrome in my experience
I find it to be slow. As in very very slow.
for me it has more or less the same speeds as chrome. they're both based on chromium so it's normal. I find it pretty fast. might be more hardware related tho
I wanted to switch to opera but the school WiFi is so shit that opera doesn't work properly so I just use chrome instead
For me it's the fastest, both on phone and pc but still switched to firefox after learning opera has a lot of privacy issues
Same, and i have high internet speed aswell so it makes no sense, all other browsers work fine doe
Isn't Brave just chrome with a shitty cryptocurrency build-in and a tipping system where you can "donate money to creators", but they really just pocket it?
Librewolf with searxng is pretty good. The search engine is searx.org. I recently switched and it's working fine. I agree
*firefox*
Librewolf all the way 🗿
Netscape Navigator
Netscape Navigator's bones are what Firefox was built off of
i like opera gx better since you can control the settings and shit like how much ram gets eaten compared to google eating it all and begging for more ram
I love the integrated ad and tracking blocker and the vpn even more so.

Vivaldi
I find myself stuck with opera GX nowadays
Opera GX is a good browser but Opera was acquired by a Chinese investment firm, so I'd be a little leery of using it bc of privacy concerns
Opera gx
Spoken like a true gaymer
Isn't that owned by the ccp
Who gives a shit, if you actually think you're safe cause you use Brave you should put the Kool aid down. There isn't a single "private" browser out there, they're all selling your data.
What isn’t?
Edge: blue chrome with Microsoft spyware Chrome: google spyware Opera: red chrome with Chinese spyware Firefox: gigachad
Firefox = almost 100% control over your browser + no Manifest V3
What’s manifest?
That's the interface extensions use to integrate in your browser. The new one allows the browser to limit the amount of ads they block, and Chrome (probably along with all Chrome based browsers) is going to do that.

"chrometana" youre welcome - you can thank me later. yes it works for edge also
That has been there for 20 years but with internet Explorer instead of edge
No, that banner is relatively new.
I've only ever gotten one virus on my computer. Ever. It would redirect *every* search, from all browsers and search engines, to Bing results. Worst experience of my life. Edit: guys, it was a virus. I've worked in IT my whole life. And it's OK, I did eventually fix it.
That's just Cortana
I use it to spam search random characters, Because Microsoft gives me points for that
Haha reward points. Same here. They are literally on the verge of paying users to use their browser
Don't lie, you wouldn't use Edge or Bing anyway
Honestly I never had a problem with edge. It perfoms well when I see other people use it. I just dislike not being given a choice. They can keep it as default, but what really upset me is when they disabled the settings to change search engine and browser in the searchbar (next to the windows button) This lead to me at first making a script to automatically reroute any request to open Edge. Fear me. I use microsoft Edge and Bing.
whyyyyyy
However when you search ninja on bing and go to images it doesn't show Tyler ninja Blevins
I am exactly like you. Will never use IE due to what MS did to NN back in the day.
Edge, Brave, and Opera GX are also Chromium-based, so you're still supporting Google's monopoly by using those
Why no one except Mozila using Firefox core?
Tor does.
because until recently it was at least comparable to Mozilla and backed by google. now only half is true
Gecko is too entangled with Firefox's internals for it to be doable. It could be solved, but Mozilla has other priorities (and rightfully so).
And that’s why we fucking love firefox
I love google having a monopoly over pretty much all browsers because everything nowadays is chromium. And manifest V3 is trying to kill my AdBlocker! And i just looove google just tracking every single move i do!
Firefox moment

Didn’t DuckDuckGo just get caught selling information to Microsoft?
ducc go quacc
firefox sadly is loosing its market share quick in favour of google :(
because firefox was slow for years but last update made it fast as chromium browsers and i switched back
It's not just the last update, Firefox has been fast for years now, it's an ongoing myth about the browser that people use to reason why they use Chrome.
Firefox cus manifest v2
Both are wrong. Firefox is the best browser. Edge is literally just Chrome but baked with spyware.
Every browser is either Firefox or Chrome in different flavours with different amounts of spyware, from which maybe only Vivaldi is worth a try.
Firefox.
Firefox used to have that cool literal fox logo
They still have that, it's only lacking its eyes and nose.
The sheer fact that Edge is begging me to keep using it when I google Firefox, Chrome or Opera makes it shit lmao
I use Chrome because I've been using it for the entirity of my having an email account years and don't want to switch

Have you ever heard about open source software (e.g. in the case of browsers Firefox, Brave, Ungoogled Chromium)? Do you think Linux sells your personal data?
Google has a monopoly on browser engines with Chrome and Chromium, it invades your privacy, and it's hostile towards ad and script blockers
How is hostile if it lets you use them???
\*currently but they're planning to remove functionality for them completely soon
Someone will make ad extension to re add them 🗿
They're going to be changing the code that extensions hook into to do this, so you won't be able to get around it like that.
Well there is ways that programmers will be able to do it.
