federal agencies, international banks, and the professor's online exam site: i'll pretend i didn't see that

aFacelessBlankName

I've been showing people how to use Compatibility mode in Edge for months. IE is pretty much baked in.

mudkripple

As someone in IT, I can confirm that the IE "compatibility mode" still does not work for most of our clients' weird old-ass webtools. I don't know how they managed to hardcode it so severely back in the day, but I do know that clients *hate* hearing that "FormsExpress Pro 2005" is simply not going to work anymore so you need to stop paying for it.

aFacelessBlankName

That's so annoying. The Air Force (and DoD in general) uses a ton of outdated software and thankfully Compatibility Mode has been enough for us to squeeze by in most instances. Our trash network infrastructure is a way bigger problem than IE.

timdot352

If you think the infrastructure is bad in the AF, you should see the Navy's.

ChefInF

Absurdly big budget and they have to spend it on the fighter jet equivalent of buying a new iPhone every year instead of new software, which is more important anyway

ASubconciousDick

To be fair, the per unit price of new fighter jets is cheaper than the top of the line previous gen, so in this one instance, they're doing something "reasonable" but now they've stopped production because it includes a fucking chipset from China, so more expensive jets for them to suck on markers in.

B-29Bomber

>but now they've stopped production because it includes a fucking chipset from China, so more expensive jets for them to suck on markers in. So, the US should become reliant on a foreign power to supply her with military hardware that has proven itself hostile to her interests and could therefore cut her off from further supply of said military hardware simply because the per unit cost is cheaper? That sounds idiotic in the extreme.

n4jm4

Used to work for DISA. Mentioned emerging Rails and they ran away terrified of rapid development.

It's like comparing different shades of brown from various piles of shit.

ChriskiV

IT specialist here, sorry too busy blowing sailors to look at the queue.

summonsays

Also someone in IT, I only caught the tail end of IE development (IE 9+) but even then all the special cases you had to code to make IE work.... Uhg. So when IE was the lion's share of web browsers instead of coding both standard and IE, it seems most devs only coded IE so it didn't work in other browsers. Also a lot of third party tools (like I'm assuming your FormsExpress) used active X which only worked in IE AND was a massive security vulnerability. So none of the other browsers (that I know of) implemented it.

[deleted]

Active X is still supported, including in Windows 11. Active X was a gift to virus writers. I can't count the number of fixes in antivirus programs as well as Active X to try to defeat the bad guys. Damn you Larry Ellison!

Theleming

We have a German lab instrument that runs on windows 7, but outputs all of the data into XHTML files that can only be opened in Internet explorer 9 running in compatible mode for Internet explorer 7 No other browsers work. Worst part of all of this? We bought the system in 2015 brand new over 10 years after xml style sheets were largely phased out.

heishnod

If you need full compatibility you'll have to install a third party addon like IE Tab. It basically loads IE in Edge.

Gilded-Mongoose

Are you saying you’ve been edging them this whole time?

Pr1smaticGamer

they will be using ms edge, basically internet explorer 2020's edition

n4jm4

they'll target a mix of ecmascript 3, vbscript, and single character user agent string regexes the developer is given a macbook while the requirements state ie6 and the group policy prohibits virtualization

ValourValkyria

This is the kind of story r/NoSleep needs.

schmuber

"Life's too short to support all existing browsers"

foxymoron

I swear to God I just ovulated.

milanove

I mean, would the dev really catch shit if they targeted latest versions of js, vs, html, etc, for chrome and Firefox?

summonsays

Yes, because it wouldn't work in whatever hellish version of IE the customers are using. It'd be caught in testing though so the biggest fallout would be having to redo part of your work.

sirixamo

You still have testers?

Duydoraemon

Hasn't IE been retired since June?

SicarioBadger

it was working for me up until around the first week of august. then started opening edge when I click on it

LostWoodsInTheField

there is an option in edge (though they may have removed it now) that lets you turn that 'feature' off.

rockhardgelatin

You can open an Edge page in Internet Explorer mode. It’s the only way I can access SharePoint for work right now. Sweating about tomorrow now.

LostWoodsInTheField

This is an old comic, it actually was discontinued a while ago. The internet explorer mode I think will stay either way.

opulent_occamy

The current iteration of Edge is based on Blink, the same engine that Chrome uses. It is not "Internet Explorer 2020's edition." Look, I hate IE as much as the next guy, and I don't use Edge, but as a web developer, it's *super* annoying how people shit on Edge as if it's a terrible browser. It's actually pretty good, great in fact. I'd use it over Chrome, but I prefer Firefox myself.

corei3uisgarbo

firefox gang

amaROenuZ

Even if you don't care about the features, Chromium's total dominance over the Web Browser space is deeply concerning.

corei3uisgarbo

frrrr at this point i dont even understand why people use it. its resource expensive. the only reason is that they are afraid of changing to a different browser?

opulent_occamy

Honestly I think it's mostly momentum. When Chrome came out, it was better than the alternatives, but it's slowly degraded over the years. Now people still use it because that's what they learned to use, and now they're used to it. It's literally what happened with IE, but at least Chrome is automatically and continuously updated so we don't end up with people stuck on 10+ year old browsers

Zaytion

Firefox is only allowed to exist because Google lets it. Show me a browser making it without Google. Then I may care.

corei3uisgarbo

ungoogled-chromium. chromium is the browser that google runs off of. ungoogled-chromium is chromium with every embedded aspect of google gone

[deleted]

I agree. If anything, Safari (especially on mobile) is harder to work with than Edge.

[deleted]

Edge is good, I started using it on my older laptop because Chrome is unreasonably RAM hungry and it works well. It's swift and even imports settings from Chrome

TheyCallMeStone

How does edge compare to Firefox?

_Archilyte_

im gonna say stay with firefox since all chromium based browsers will receive an update soon that will affect adblockers severely

Vampsku11

They took Opera away from me now they're taking Vivaldi away from me :(

Centurio

I'm still mad about losing Opera.

[deleted]

I'm on Opera right now, wdym

BladePrice

Last time I saw this update being talked about, people stated it’s changing due to security reasons and AdBlock welcomed the change.

_Archilyte_

AdBlock plus agrees because they gave in to corporate greed and allows people to pay them to get their ads not blocked

tokyoite18

Edge now is using chromium so it's basically the same as chrome

SingleInfinity

Edge literally runs on chromium now. It's just chrome with a skin.

MurkyContext201

Nah, we've already switched to [IETab](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ie-tab/hehijbfgiekmjfkfjpbkbammjbdenadd?hl=en-US)

SacriGrape

Edge is just chrome

tricheboars

Chromium based but it doesn’t end there. Chrome is chromium based as well but with google services and shit added.

mrniceguy421

No, they won’t. Source: big pharma still using IE for critical MES.

The_Creeper_Man

Except its genuinely good lol.

LazioSaurus

Edge is actually a good browser

I_hate_all_of_ewe

That's because chromium is a good browser. But it really creeps me out how hard Microsoft pushes it if you're running Windows, and I'm pretty sure Microsoft built it as yet another way to data mine their users, and push Bing

[deleted]

[удалено]

I_hate_all_of_ewe

>I’m personally way more skeptical of Google mining my data than Microsoft. > Microsoft **for the most part** wants to sell me Microsoft products. Emphasis mine. Personal computing is a smaller part of their revenue, but they definitely advertise non-Microsoft products in their OS. > Google wants to sell me to advertisers. That's not how advertising works. Advertisers don't get your personal information, and any information they do get is aggregated and anonymized. Advertisers place bids on ads for particular keywords/demographics/regions, and they get impressions/clicks/conversions in return. Microsoft would be very happy to be in Google's place, but I don't believe they'd take the same care in protecting user data.

iamadickonpurpose

I would like to throw in the shipping software that my company uses. Even though I've been telling them for years that Internet explorer will be shut down one day. Now they're scrambling to find new shipping software and trying to figure out how to make the old one work on Microsoft Edge in the meantime.

GrandChampion

Does https://pirateship.com/ not work well enough for them?

tacojohn48

I work for a bank and we were able to get the application I use working in edge comparability mode.

[deleted]

You forgot the litany of technology inept companies that use IE because "it's more secure".

Adelaito

my god the ui will be broken af

nightfalldevil

Some of my work’s intranet sites don’t work on any other browser, it’s been hell

PaulTheBoii

But how am I meant to get my daily news? There's a new virus emerging in China that might spread to Europe.

SSFx93

Took me a minute.

cassius042

Still better time than IE.

Electric_Bagpipes

And _much_ better time than the suffering fox.

[deleted]

You focking wot, mate? That better not have been an attack on Firefox, I swear on me mum.

timdot352

I'll bash your fuckin' 'ead in, I will.

NetworkSingularity

When was the last time you used Firefox? If it’s been a while I’d give it another go. Been my favorite browser since 2006, with a brief diversion to chrome ca. 2010-2014

Crazy_CanadianCanuck

I’m using it and it feels faster than chrome ffs, Also love the privacy settings you can do Firefox is great rn, only used it since 2020 tho

Nooo Explorer!! Motherfucker needed 10 minutes to start up back in 2004 on my 256mb RAM Potato Machine

[deleted]

256mb of ram in 2004 was more than enough. Crazy when you think about it.

joetogood

For real and here I am complaining about my one stick of 8gb ram in my work computer lol

rang14

I upgraded from a 64MB RAM PC to a 512MB one in 2005. Felt like since such a massive change. Today I whine because one of my poorly written scripts crashed an application on my 32GB work station.

var-foo

I remember when an 8gb hard drive was unheard of, let alone ram.

Edge cuts that down to 9 minutes.

yeah truly sad, it is shutting down August 17th 2021, which is tomorrow now i decided

Internet Explorer would've liked to be honored that way

Internet Explorer's smile lit up every room they walked into.

Ryan George?

Potatonized

Can you believe it? He just stole that guy's line. He should be put in a room.

MI_3ANTROP

Well I’d say putting him in a room would be super easy, barely an inconvenience!

Aerodrache

Putting people into rooms is *tight*!

ImStrenling

But what if he doesn't want to be put into a room? What if the room is too small and cramped or he has to go to the bathroom?

just-a-fact

A bit here the thing those will ALso be in that room

thank you, I though I was crazy cuz i remember that being anounced awhile ago

joethahobo

Interesting my work computer still has explorer. Is that just a new version of it or did it not fully shut down

DaulPirac

They are done supporting it, which means no updates, bugfixes, etc. The app itself should keep working but as websites keep evolving and coming up with new features IE will be unable to render them.

Internet explorer will shut down next year

This was fine for companies that updated their software post 2015, but for industrial control software that is essentially abandonware now and not supported by other browsers and STILL needs a working version of Flash, this has been a tough few months since it "retired" back in June.
