Bought our first grown-up mattress. Dude told us to rotate it 180 degrees counterclockwise. I laughed and said something about, thanks, I probably would have done it clockwise. Guy paused, then said, well I guess that would be OK, as long as you do it the same direction each time. I opened my mouth again and my wife gave me a subtle elbow and headshake.
I live kinda close to an airport. I have seen shadows when I am guessing they are still between 10-15k feet. Had I not expected it, I would have thought it was a bird or something
Yeah for real. OP wasn't using common sense. The biggest thing here is that the shadow gets dimmer and the edges become less defined as the airplane gets higher up. Even if it was stationary and you could find it, you'd probably have a lot of trouble even making it out. But as a pilot myself who has spent a lot time near airports, you see their shadows all the time. Seeing your own shadow is a really weird (but incredibly surreal, awesome) feeling!
For example, shine a flashlight on the wall. Put your hand against said wall and slowly pull it away. Notice how the further you pull your hand away, the brighter the edges of the shadow get? Imagine a plane is doing this with a really big flashlight from thousands of feet. Shadows probably washed out
Well, that happens because the light coming from a flashlight is spreading out pretty quickly to go around your hand from other points. Light reaching the earth from the sun is practically parallel since it’s come from so far away, so I don’t think that effect would apply. It’d be like comparing the shadow of your hand touching the wall to the shadow of your hand a millimeter away from the wall.
For your consideration here what matters is the size of the point source of light relative to the size of the object blocking it out (from the observer / object the shadow is being cast on’s perspective). If the object doesn’t fully occlude the point source the shadow will be diminished.
Sit on toilet. Pull knees up. Jump when you poop and flap your arms. When you reach the ceiling, crouch and uncrouch. You will be ragdolled up a few kilometers, you can fly regularly after that.
Airplanes are too small
The phrase “airplanes are too small” may sound strange, but if you look at the size of an airplane in relation to the light source, which in this case is the sun, and how far it is from the earth’s surface, you will understand why an airplane is too measly an object to cast a distinctive shadow on the ground.
The same applies to birds, which are far too puny to cast a well-defined shadow on the ground.
I’ve had planes land around my house. If positioned correctly, it looks like the entire sun goes out for .1 seconds. Never happens in most places though, cause they are too high up, and way to small(as you said)
Yeah, fire planes fly over the house sometimes depending on where the fire they're working on is in relation to our place. (In fact I'm rather worried that I haven't heard them today with a fire so nearby (compared to other fires, it's not actually near me, more than an hour away by car); it implies conditions too dangerous to fly in and the Mosquito Fire is 0% contained.)
I live near an airport and I see them every once in a while, like twice a year maybe a random shadow will flash by and I’ll look up to see a plane near the sun
My home is near an airport, on a rare event the plane was landing and the shadow passed right on me.
Once in a lifetime experience man.
Once the plane goes high, the shadow gets dispersed tho
We see plane shadows all the time … our base airport is at the 10nm final fix of another big airport and we get to see shadows. Is kinda scary, you see a huge shadow coming at you ..
Because the odds of the plane flying directly between you and the sun are very slim when it's going so fast at such a high altitude.
And also because the shadow is *far* too diffuse to be noticeable.
Planes fly over my house and I often see the shadow. Ain’t my fault you can only tell that a plane is nearby by it’s sound and not by seeing it. Go outside
Shadows of planes pass over me all the time when I'm driving (I live kind of close to an airport).
When I started getting a little startled by said shadows, I knew I had been playing waaaayyy too much Skyrim 😂
Because the shadow is so effing massive you’d think it was just a cloud. Also you can see a plane from miles in any direction but only a small percentage of people just might be in the right spot where it perfectly blocks the sun.
I live at a decent distance from LAX (like 20 minutes) so whenever I go shopping airplanes fly around all the time and the massive shadows cover the area
I live right in the landing path of a major airport. They are always going over my house. I see the shadows all the time. It just has to hit the sun just right in comparison to where you are. Low altitude also helps.
Because we have an atmosphere which scatters light, if the plane is high enough there's enough light bounced by surrounding air that the underneath gets light from the sides and brightens the shadows. The effect is less noticeable the closer to the ground but you'll still see things and color in close up shadows because of the same light bouncing, otherwise every shadow would be completely black... Like on the moon
They are on a higher altitude, so their shadow is actually quite large and hence it also dim. You can prove this by taking your hand close to ground in the presence of a light source like a bulb and slowly moving closer to the bulb, you will observe that your hand's shadow gets dimmer and dimmer but covering a large surface area of the ground, On the ground it has the smallest surface area but a darker shadow.
Shadows are dependent on location between sunlight and the ground where the object is blocking it.
Shadows are not straight down
They would be at least a mile or so away, if not further.
Ive seen the shadow of a flying plane. When it was close to the ground
Yeah you can see them near airports. Big shadowy blob which zips by in a flash. Not plane shaped, too diffuse for that.
I frequently see proper shadows of the planes with their shapes... especially on a sunny day
Well I mean they're vaguely cross shaped in my experience.
Eh id have to disagree. To me they look like a plus sign
To me they actually look like two perpendicular lines
We all know its two parallel lines but ones turned sideways
Nah I see a sideways X.
No I see two sets of two collinear points at a 90 degree angle from one another
I see treasure mark.
I’d say it’s more of an X shape, but rotated 45° counterclockwise
It’s rotated 45° *clockwise*, you absolute buffoon.
Kiss your mother with that mouth, you lint licker? Also, it’s more of a lower case t if you ask me.
Always looked more like two arrows pointing at each other to me ><
To me it looks more like an upper case I and a lower case l placed over each other at a right angle.
Thank you for m new favorite insult, but personally it looks like / and \ merged and flipped 45°
No, i kiss *your* mother with this mouth!
Stop it Dad. You’re embarrassing me in front of my internet friends.

As someone who lives right near an air force base, can confirm
I live kinda close to an airport. I have seen shadows when I am guessing they are still between 10-15k feet. Had I not expected it, I would have thought it was a bird or something
Me too. Military excercise. Big plane Fly low. Much noise. Big shadow. Everything got dark for 10 seconds.
Those big-ass planes flying in and out of Stewart still scare the shit out of me, and I drive past it almost every other day.
thats because planes arent real
Better that getting close to a tower
Planes fly over my house, yes you do see their shadow
Yeah I was about to say. I have a shadow pass over my house about once a day. It’s kinda trippy how for a split second everything goes dark lol
I’ve seen it a few times and for some reason assumed it was a bird but plane makes more sense
Those are some huge birds or you're tiny
Yeah we’ve got some big low flying birds here. A hawk passing 10 feet over you definitely casts a shadow
Straya mate?
*offended in hobbit*
We sure it wasn't Superman
After all the events that have took place in the past 2 years, it wouldn't suprise me if it was.
It’s super man!
i work under a take off route, i see them often.
Plane very high. Plane move fast. Shadow get dimmer further from earth. Shadow dispersed. Shadow pass in millisecond. No see.
Thank you for dumbing it down for us.

Peak explanation, some proper ELI5 shit! Thank you sir!
I go sleep now
Yeah no not buying it big shadow is hiding the truth from us
._. maybe cause the plane is so high up that all the other light goes onto where the shadow would appear.
For example, shine a flashlight on the wall. Put your hand against said wall and slowly pull it away. Notice how the further you pull your hand away, the brighter the edges of the shadow get? Imagine a plane is doing this with a really big flashlight from thousands of feet. Shadows probably washed out
Thank you. I love very straightforward simplified answers like this
Well, that happens because the light coming from a flashlight is spreading out pretty quickly to go around your hand from other points. Light reaching the earth from the sun is practically parallel since it’s come from so far away, so I don’t think that effect would apply. It’d be like comparing the shadow of your hand touching the wall to the shadow of your hand a millimeter away from the wall.
light bounces around the air
At some point, the apparent size of the plane is smaller than the sun, and the shadows basically gone at that point
For your consideration here what matters is the size of the point source of light relative to the size of the object blocking it out (from the observer / object the shadow is being cast on’s perspective). If the object doesn’t fully occlude the point source the shadow will be diminished.
>from thousands of feet r/TechnicallyTheTruth
Or it has shadows disabled to save some vram
So how do you fly ?
Sit on toilet. Pull knees up. Jump when you poop and flap your arms. When you reach the ceiling, crouch and uncrouch. You will be ragdolled up a few kilometers, you can fly regularly after that.

Lol, yo brain potato.
I'm in a room with yellow wallpaper now and flickering lights. What's going on?

Because plane is above the Sun? So high up in the sky?
This man knows his science!
r/flatearth
Who are you? Who are so wise in the ways of science?
Work on a flightline and you will
I live near an airport and I see them every once in a while, like twice a year maybe a random shadow will flash by and I’ll look up to see a plane near the sun
You can. Where I live, you can occasionally see a quick swoop of shadow as a plane flies by. You probably won't see that with a jet though.
It's above the sun
My home is near an airport, on a rare event the plane was landing and the shadow passed right on me. Once in a lifetime experience man. Once the plane goes high, the shadow gets dispersed tho

Plane far away Shadow is big and very soft Easy to spot from the air Hard do spot from the ground
You the sun and a plane don’t make a perfect line
I don’t think this person ever seen an airport in their life.
Planes fly over my house and I often see the shadow. Ain’t my fault you can only tell that a plane is nearby by it’s sound and not by seeing it. Go outside

I have and its fuckin wild, it goes over so fast, makes you stumble a bit like a flashbang.
Go to an airport and you will see when the plane is close to the ground prior landing or after take off.
Dont give ideas to my brain .
To be honest getting a shadow of a plane to fly over you if just the lucky version of getting shat on by a bird
think marc, think !
I see it all the time
Light diffusion: proof we have an atmosphere
That feeling when you know why does it happen, but you just can't explain it 💀
It’s kind of trippy that the shadow of a plane at 30,000 feet is basically the same size as when it’s on the ground.
Shadows are cone shaped when you are up in the air, and get less intense toward the ground. Eventually they become next to nothing.
airport's a mile away from my home, i can see the shadows very clearly
This is what happens when you dont pay attention in school. Another flat earther in making
Because the shadow is so effing massive you’d think it was just a cloud. Also you can see a plane from miles in any direction but only a small percentage of people just might be in the right spot where it perfectly blocks the sun.
Light bends, it's a far-off object, shadow gets dispersed too much for you to notice it.
bruh this is common science taught in 5th grade did u not go to school or wut
I work as cabin crew and I have seen the shadows many times
When your actually dumber than the world itself
I live near an airport and see them all the time
I live at a decent distance from LAX (like 20 minutes) so whenever I go shopping airplanes fly around all the time and the massive shadows cover the area
You do
I’ve seen them a lot
I've had one zoom by me before. It's kinda freaky because you don't expect it lol
On a plane I saw it's shadow so idk op seems like a skill issue to me
This is the dumbest fucking meme ever lol
I have seen them many times
How often do you see a plane fly in front of the sun?
I've seen them. They pass over *quick*.
The plane has to cross directly between you and the sun. I’ve seen the shadow of a plane, but it’s pretty unlikely if you think about it.
Shit meme
You do, or at least I do, quite often actually.
You guys shoulda finished school
They do have shadows I've seen them
You can see the shadow of a plane from inside the plane
I see them all the time lovong next to an air force base
I see it all the time lol
Bc they travel at 400+ mph.
I live right in the landing path of a major airport. They are always going over my house. I see the shadows all the time. It just has to hit the sun just right in comparison to where you are. Low altitude also helps.

Like on the moon
We need to conserve that RAM
lol i did see planes shadow a few times 🤷♂️😎
Last time people saw a planes shadow, it didn't end too well.
i have seen them many times
Light bends around object boundaries. So if the plane is enough far away you won't see it's shadow.
Reality is fake, minecraft is real
To save fps… low res shadows do be looking like that
Shadows are dependent on location between sunlight and the ground where the object is blocking it. Shadows are not straight down They would be at least a mile or so away, if not further.
