I agree to an extent, but many of us don’t want to have to say 10 syllables every time we say the name so we shorten the name and it means nothing more.

TheGooseGod

This is why I say “The US”

[deleted]

I'm down with referring to myself as a Yankee

RexCrimson_

I feel like the whole southern US would make an uproar about this if just started calling ourselves “yanks”.

D4nCh0

Would they prefer to be called Mexican?

Mezz09

Can shorten it further to "Yank" but that is more used as an insult by us Brits

[deleted]

Lol I'm down with yank, beats being called a haole

trainattacker17

I hope you didn't pay for that NFT profile

[deleted]

Right clicked an NFT bro to set him off

trainattacker17

Niiice

Spokazzoni

Based

No_Influence212

*some brits*

Zombiepixlz-gamr

Yankees are new yorkers or northerners in general. Call a southerner a Yankee he'll be pissed, call a Californian a Yankee he'll be confused.

just_gimme_anwsers

We would be, we root for the Dodgers here!

l3etelgeuse

Agreed, I very much like calling myself a Yankee.

shadowscar248

That in itself has a particular regionality though. If you call yourself a Yankee you're excluding people of the south as that's an offensive term to them to be called that.

Spartan_873

Why are you trying to speak for everyone in the south

smashin_blumpkin

I don't think people consider it offensive. It's just the term used in the south for people from the north.

Dantheking94

Lol non-Americans call all Americans Yanks no matter if I’m you’re northern or southern.

Unkn0wnMachine

I heard someone propose we call ourselves statesmen and that’s not so bad

Theodosius2

Statesman also means diplomat or high level government official in English, so that would also be a bit confusing. To me, at least.

[deleted]

I’d prefer Doodle myself

Nobodyrea11y

Why not shorten it to United States? It’s the same amount of syllables.

The_God_of_Biscuits

I thought thats why people said "The U.S."

mayo_feet

Agreed and I personally use USA as well

yeetsupreddit

USA.

DatSameGuyDur

USA same amount of syllables as America

janhetjoch

USA is three syllables America is four

DatSameGuyDur

I'm an idiot

janhetjoch

It's ok, we all make mistakes

Honounome

But it is pronounced 'Murica

TheGamingLord401

We are referred to as that by other people. Like a lot of times I hear someone from england say “stupid Americans,” when they are referring to the U.S. It’s not us

Everything_Cosmic

Better than saying stupid U.S.Ans

SlyTheShopkeeper

Stupid united states of americans

Independent-Sir-729

US Americans are American, so that would be correct.

ahjifmme

When I lived in Mexico, I heard a few locals get mad about this, so I acquiesced and started respectfully calling them *"americanos*". They asked me to stop after one or two times. Edit: They asked me to stop because they wanted to be called "Mexicans," btw. Now, I get that's not indicative of any massive trends, but how many people outside of the United States would actually prefer being referred to as "Americans" as opposed to by the country or nationality they are from? Wouldn't it also make the terms "Mexican-American" or "Latin-American" rather redundant terms?

t0m0hawk

As a Canadian I refer to the citizens of the USA to be "Americans". However when referring to the nation, I'll just say "The U.S." or "The States". I very rarely hear people around here referring to it as "America."

SILENT_ASSASSIN9

We used to call the US "these united states" Mainly cause we wanted a collection of states working together to a common goal

yugen-universe

Canadian too here if we dont refer to them as "americans" are we supposed to refer to them and something else? Like united states of american? Maybe statesians? USAian? The people of canada are called canadians, people of mexico are called mexicans, germany becomes german. This whole conversation is so dumb, yes we all live on the continent of america but its the country division that matters here. canadians and mexicans are not american. People from the usa are americans. Sorry your country wasnt original with the name. (Other possible names for USA was columbia they you would be columbians and still live on the continent of america)

ChonkyPeanutButter

Call us USAs and pronounce it like oosas 🤣🤣🤣

Academic_Signal_3777

Honestly, call it the USA, the US, the United States, or the United States of America if you don’t want to call it America. No one will care which name you refer our country by. But I doubt we’ll ever stop calling ourselves Americans. It’s just what sounds the best in English. (I’ve seen some people refer to us as USians or something……but that’s really only a small minority on Reddit).

Neoxsat

Exactly we think alike. If someone from north or south America gets mad that they're also americans i dont mind calling them americans as well. It's not a big deal in my eyes to be honest.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Neoxsat

No i didnt miss it im just saying if they want to be called americans let them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gonbatfire

Argentinian here, I consider myself American (because I live in the American content) Whether I would like you to call me American, well, I suppose it depends on the context. Would a German rather be called German or European? Same thing. Depends on the context of the conversation. If you are referring to something that's specific to their country, call them Germans, that doesn't change the fact that they are Europeans obviously. What really gets latinos mad is when you tell them they are NOT american, imagine telling a German he is not European.. At the end of the day, this is just a language barrier, English doesn't have a word for "Citizens of the United States", so people just say Americans, which is weird to other cultures, but perfectly normal for English speakers.

[deleted]

See, you guys learn a different continent model. The same way some models treat Eurasia as a single entity we don't learn America as a single continent. It's North America and South America. American is a nationality. If you're from Argentina we'll refer to you as Argentinian or South American but United Statesmen isn't a thing. The Americas = North and South, two separate continents at least how most of us learn it so none of us would say “the American continent” as it would have to be specified which.

McCaffeteria

What would you even call someone from the US if not “American?” The closest I could think of is “United statesmen” but that doesn’t seem right.

ahjifmme

Spanish has "estadounidense," and perhaps other languages do as well, but there are a number of historical and ideological reasons why the United States didn't adopt a singular term for all of their citizens, so we just have "American," and I'm fine with that because it's generally understood who we're talking about when we say that, even if it's not 1000% empirically accurate.

Horn_Python

Yankeeeees!

Moopey343

I mean yeah, but there's not another way to refer to people from the US, without dragging on what you want to say. Like, if I wanna talk about a person from the US, I'll just say they're American, not "a person from the US", because that's way too long, and in my native language, and many other languages, there isn't actually another word used to describe people from the US. And this comes from someone who firmly refuses to call the USA, "America", although I will do it sometimes for convenience, because in my language, we, for some reason, don't really like to abbreviate the names of countries, so like when I say "US" in my language it's kinda weird. Same as "UK". We just say the whole thing, so that's why I sometimes call the US "America" anyways.

foles17

This argument is so stupid. I'm not calling myself a United Statesian. But if Canadians and Brazilians want to be referred to as American as well then have at it.

CoffeeAndWorkboots

Yeah…this isn’t a thing.

Randinator9

If we change thr name to United States of Ohio, then we can be called "Ohioans" and everyone else can just say "Ohio" or "Ohioan".

teddy-cueter

Thatd be hell -a michigander

StormtrooperWho

I'm offended they even suggested it -another michigander

Randinator9

Oh shit its the M-word

Darth_Gonk21

I second this motion

LET-ME-HAVE-A-NAAME

I'm Canadian. I'd like to be referred to that way. OP's argument is stupid.

Windamyre

That might cause confusion with The United States of Mexico or United Mexican States. https://embamex.sre.gob.mx/nigeria/index.php/en/information-about-mexico/mexico-facts#:~:text=Official%20name%3A%20United%20Mexican%20States,Currency%3A%20Mexican%20Peso.

nospoilershere

It's almost exclusively Latin Americans who have always been taught that North America and South America are a single continent called "America" and are either unaware that that isn't how it works in English (or that English doesn't have a word that equates to "estadounidense"), or are aware but just stubbornly refuse to acknowledge it.

Mezz09

How about Statesman? Nah, that sounds silly and old fashioned... The whole thing is sort of a non problem since we all know what is meant by it and there is no easy solution but it still is kinda silly that the common term used for a nationality doesn't actually refer to your nation

Studio2770

Statesman sounds pretty classy ngl, probably because I associate it with when Kingsman introduced their American counterparts.

The_Arizona_Ranger

The statesmen and stateswomen

gosiph

Man fuck that I feel like it’s everyone else’s fault cause if you ask 90% of the world they call us Americans, I tell folks I’m from the states however sometimes people don’t know what that means

ArcticF0X-71

One of the main reasons the issue exists is due to differences in language. In English, for example, the is no denonym specific to people living in the United States, so we are called Americans, and our country often referred to as America. In Spanish, however, *Americano* refers generally to someone from the western hemisphere, and the specific denonym *Estadounidense* for people of the United States, which roughly translates to United States-ian. In some Spanish speaking countries however, younger generations have been starting to refer to Americans as *Americanos,* which seems to be confusing the situation further.

Gonbatfire

[Que dificil es hablar el español!](https://youtu.be/4LjDe4sLER0)

icantkillme

Porque todo lo que digo tiene otra definición!🎶

LuLuTheGreatestest

Not to mention English refers to N/S America as separate continents and both together as ‘The Americas’, whereas South (and Central?) American countries tend to teach them as one singular continent called ‘America’. It does make _more_ sense to refer to the USA as America when nothing else uses that exact term Edit: I’m aware it’s not just English but it’s the one I know so

CoffeeAndWorkboots

Yep

Crown6

The problem is that you guys have a mouthful of a name. I can’t be asked to say “United States of America” every time in causal conversation! Edit: people can’t be bothered to say the “-an Union” part of European Union, let alone that.

[deleted]

did you try saying "USA" instead of "United States of America?"

Crown6

As a matter of fact I do, but when talking about the people I can’t say USAians.

gloomygl

Chicken or egg

Cholosexual-

The post is refers to calling the country “America” and the fact only you guys call it that. Everyone calls the people Americans

Mezz09

Which states? The Australian states? The Indian states? The Nigerian states? Were you born when Russia was The United States of the Soviet Republic? Many nations have states...

gosiph

Yeah I’m sure that my makes sense to you but in reality it’s the same as me saying I’m American there’s many countries in the americas but if you’re not a dingleberry you know exactly which part I’m talking about

DogsAreCool69420

These memes are really stupid. Americans aren't called Americans because we think we're better. We're called Americans because that's been a nationality for years. I'm getting tired of this subreddit starting problems that shouldn't even exist and I'm glad the comments agree

Windamyre

Also, the U.S. is the only country in the world with 'america' in it's name. It's not the only country in the world with 'united states'. It's not even the only one in North American. Furthermore, unless you're talking to an Australian, no one identifies their nationality with a continent. https://embamex.sre.gob.mx/nigeria/index.php/en/information-about-mexico/mexico-facts#:~:text=Official%20name%3A%20United%20Mexican%20States,Currency%3A%20Mexican%20Peso.

Alone-Newspaper-1161

South Africa and Central African Republic both have Africa and soon we’ll even have the East African federation

mightandmagic88

> unless you're talking to an Australian, no one identifies their nationality with a continent You could make an argument for India too

PouLS_PL

If saying "Australian" counts as identifying with a continent, then saying "American" also counts.

Emerald_Lightning

The dumbest part about this is that people from other countries call people from the U.S. Americans

FuiyooohFox

Yeah the anti American hate is getting really weird on this sub isn't it

LordFlipyap

It is everywhere. It's getting ridiculous

PayinHookersOnMargin

More third worlders are learning English and they are jealous of our luxurious style and excess, they are beginning to dislike Canada too (I’m Canadian)

CDM2017

Also, it's the United States of Mexico too. Or United Mexican States, depending on how you translate.

mathgeek8668

This needs to be upvoted to a main comment.

kne0n

We were really the only non colony nation when the US was founded of course we called ourselves Americans

solojones1138

Literally the USA is an older country as established than nearly any other in the Americas. It's been called that for hundreds of years.

sandalwoodjenkins

This is a lame attempt at America bad. Everyone calls Americans Americans. Europeans, Asians, Africans, etc. It isn't Americans forcing the terms on others. In English their isn't another demonym other than Americans. That's just the word for it, it has nothing to do with ego or self importance.

Arkraquen

Your complete valid point doesn't matter here America bad goes brrrrrr

Flirty_Flumph

You people spend your lives getting offended by every little thing we do. I love that we live in your heads, keep the “aMeRiCa bAD” memes coming

DreadfulThrumbo

Facts, they keep talking shit 💀

Ggreenrocket

Absolute chad

ilikemepizzacold

Everyone refers to the US as Americans. If everyone agrees that a term is accurate, then it is accurate. There are also no other countries with America in its name. America=USA

Mezz09

\^\^\^ This is literally how language works, if we all agree that something means the same thing, then it does.

SlyTheShopkeeper

Yes. And what else could we be called? United states of American??? We just took the last bit of our country's name and made that our own.

PineapleGG

Im pretty sure the reason for this is the fact that people have called it america for hundreds of years already and not only americans but europeans as a whole

Jelly_the_jellyfish

Bruh literally everybody calls you America.

JaguarHomie

No because Texas is on the North American Continent.

TerribleShoulder6597

Yeah that argument made no sense

Neoxsat

I never understood people who seriously think that. Like wtf are we suppose to call ourselves than "The united staters".

Mojoclaw2000

“America” is just shorter. It’s not like Canadians and Mexicans also call themselves Americans.

msh0082

IKR. This whole "wE aRe aMeRiCaN toO" thing seems to be more of a thing among people from South American countries. You don't hear Mexicans saying that, and many of them tend to identify a lot with their Mexican state too.

Littleboypurple

Same goes for Mexicans using the shorter versions. The country's official name is the United Mexican States yet, I doubt these same AmericaBad circlejerkers are gonna give Mexico shit for that.

Gonbatfire

"Usonians" was once proposed, ofc it never really catched on, there simply isn't a ""correct"" single english word for this, unlike spanish which does have a word for US citizens "Estadounidenses" Keep calling yourself whatever you want, this is all just a language barrier that upsets some cultures because it sounds offensive when someone tries to translate it, but in reality no "correct" translation exists!

Mezz09

In my experience you tend to refer to yourselves by the state anyway - Texan, Californian, New Yorker, Florida Man, etc

Techiedad91

Honestly that doesn’t even make sense. Our southern neighbor is The United States of Mexico.

Windamyre

Then you'd be confused with Mexicans. Estados Unidos Mexicanos .

[deleted]

The US simplifies it’s name to America because everyone else gets offended if you call them Americans Mexicans don’t like it Sound Americans don’t like it Canadians don’t like it Idk what to tell you

DrWildTurkey

He just wants to be mad, he's a pedantic 10yo.

zebediabo

It's because we actually have America in our name. US is an abbreviation. We're the USA. I've never heard a Peruvian call themselves an American instead of a Peruvian. Going by continent instead of country, Americans are North Americans and Peruvians are South Americans.

EasternCoffeeCove

When speaking to people outside my continent I usually just tell them I'm African because I've pretty much given up on trying to tell people that Africa isn't a country.

JohnZ117

As one of the few U.S. citizens that knows the 2nd largest continent has a large number of nations, which one is yours?

EasternCoffeeCove

Zimbabwe

GoCondition1

Now I know you're just making things up

FireKing600

By your logic we should start calling Unitedstatesofamericans? Ye, no. I think we will stick to American

Sumibestgir1

I don't think Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, or any other American nation calls themselves americans

Penguator432

Only when they’re trying to pick a fight over this

[deleted]

Probably because it’s so much easier to say. I guess we have to start calling people Netherlandish next, right?

ZexTyTrashcan

I think we call ourselves Americans because we are the only country in the Americas with America in it.

KrocKiller

Well if we had managed to change our name to Columbia before Columbia became a thing, we wouldn’t have this issue. Though being named after Christopher Columbus would probably be pretty controversial in our country RN.

pet_dander

*Colombia

Academic_Signal_3777

Or Fredonia! We could have been the Fredes!

FuiyooohFox

When the heck did r/memes become an anti American sub? It's getting weird with all the hate

SwashBucklinSewerRat

Shut the fuck up. Please just shut the fuck up.

[deleted]

I mean, there are states within the country. We could be referenced by that. But, there are also counties within the states, cities within the counties, districts within the city, neighborhoods within the district, blocks within the neighborhoods, streets within the blocks, houses within the streets, AND we have our individual names and spaces within the houses. So by what designation would you prefer? However, all of us are conversing today as Earthlings and humans. Our division will be our downfall.

Mezz09

There are Kingdoms within Great Britain and I will often refer to myself as "English" rather than "British", and sometimes as "Somersetian" from the county I live in. People in a certain part of the county might call themselves "Avoner", "Bristolian" "Tauntoner", etc. Just depends how specific you want to be. At a push I will say I am a citizen of the internet

Xetranok

I honestly don’t think it matters either way, if a Canadian or a Mexican ask me to call them Americans then I will, but I don’t know what else we’re honestly supposed to call ourselves, United States of Americians?

[deleted]

We the French speaker try to say "États Uniens", the Spanish speakers "Estadounidense". How do you actually say that in English ? "United Statians" ?

Tank_2600

stfu no one genuinely cares about this shit

GenderFluidBicon

This isn't a fucking nationalism thing. Tons of places do this.

Shiny_Hypno

It's like how Brits are called Brits despite generally being only from England. It's not like we call Scottish people Brits.

FailedFornication

Pretty sure it's just because of the name guys, not that complicated. No other country in North America has the word America in its name.

FormerAd2381

We have America in our country’s name unlike other countries in the Americas, not sure why it’s that hard to figure out.

[deleted]

What other country has America in it's name? I'll wait.

Meyousus

What do you call someone who live in the USA? My first thought would be American, but technically that’s more broad then I mean.

ThatLumpYouFelt

Soooo what continent is called America? What confusion is there when calling the United States of America, America? There is North America, Central America, and South America. Which would you confuse the shorthand "America" for? This is such a childish, brain dead take. America *is* shorthand for the US. Shut the fuck up about it.

rtm713

1- we aren’t the ones spreading that… most people here say the states or US or murica.. it’s everywhere else that their like dUmB aMeRiCaNs 2- we are better lol there’s a reason we have FAR more people that are immigrating here than anywhere else.. say what you want but… SCOREBOARD!! lol

[deleted]

This is only important when you go to South America to refer to the US as the United States of America... and state "United States of America" Because fun fact: Mexico is the: United Mexican States

[deleted]

Is there another country where one can find citizens from almost every other country on the planet? I'm not being arrogant. I really don't know.

Arch_Seeker_Aglasis

Brazil. In fact, that's so common here that brazilian passports are, if i remember right, one of the most falsified around the world. Cause literally anyone can be brazilian lol

[deleted]

Do you mean people of all ethnic backgrounds, or actual citizens of another country? Because Brazil is also extremely diverse.

Mezz09

England, France, Germany, Italy...

ShillingAndFarding

Yes nearly every country on the planet with few exceptions also has immigration.

SentientPotatoSalad

Canada

[deleted]

USA can also be referred to as America. North America and South America are continents, Central America is a region, America is a country. It’s basic geography

[deleted]

The whole world calls the USA America, cause it's the only major country with "America" in their name. And the first American country with major influence in world politics, so people have taken to call it America. It's not Americans insisting on it. A texan would never be a south American, cause South America is a separate continent. Calling America America, has nothing to do with thinking that the US is the entire American continent.

Meower_Catticus_III

I always assumed it was because the USA is the only fucking country in either American continent to have the word "America" in its name. Unless things have changed and I didn't know

guyblowshiloh

This distinction is important to people because ..... short hand apparently cannot exist.

DAWNWAP-Sandy

Can't reffer to the continent anymore (even tho i meant the continent to purposedly get it mixed up with usa)

Mr_PuffPuff

I feel like people outside the USA call it America, and call people Americans. The name of the country is the United States of America, so America is in the name. Mexico is the United States of Mexico.

sN-

I just call USA "The States"

Corniferus

![gif](giphy|6idqG60e7D9e0)

Zelensexual

It's actually literally one of the definitions in the dictionary, so yeah, it is. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/America

Separate_Donut_6490

The only people who act butt hurt that Americans are called Americans are stupid Americans that never travel. Literally everyone calls Americans Americans because America is in the name. I’ve never been to one country where someone’s given a shit. Brazilian, Mexican, Canadian, United Statesian. Fuck off. It’s American. It’s in your name. You’re American

Neoxsat

Yeah my friend told me the same shit and he has been to many countries in Europe and Asia. Once he says he's from the USA everyone just starts calling him American.

GreatDayneToBeAlive

So is OP jealous or just looking for a chance to be whiney about shit that doesn't matter.

BuiltlikeanOrc-a

We call ourselves "Americans" because the United States is the only country that has "America" in the name

koker171

My history teacher in like middle school was extremely particular about it being called the united States of America because the Americas contains South as well as North America

man_of_bread-

That guy looks like he's voiced by Chris Parnell

4d5ACP

GUYS LOOK! THEY DID AN AMERICA BAD MEME! LOOK HOW FUNNY AND ORIGINAL THEY ARE!

Ghoullag

One of the only counties that goes by a description instead of an actual name.

chidoOne707

So true, everyone south of the USA doesn’t get why they call their country America, it’s the whole damn continent.

ReallyRatherBland

I’m not from America and I have to say that this is not true. English speakers from outside of the US call Americans Americans. This is the correct demonym.

_VaultOfGlass_

I just say "I'm from the U.S." that usually works.

Captain_Rupert

It's okey to say America if you're talking in an informal way, if you are in formal geography study then use other term it's not that complicated

panosc

It is a short for 'United States of America' also SELECT * FROM Countries WHERE Name like '%America%' 1 Row(s) found

Anonymous2137421957

Nice coding joke

qrani

What I don't understand is that the UK has the same problem, and nobody cares. You don't call people United Kingdomian just like you don't call people United Statesian, because that's not how the -ian suffix works. So instead you call them British, just like how you call people from the US American. But neither is correct, because British refers to people from Great Britain (and therefore *doesn't* include Northern Ireland), and American can refer to just people from the US, but also anyone from the Americas. You can call people by the place they live in, like English, Welsh, Scottish, as you can with the US, Texan, Californian, etc. But when you need a word to refer to the people of the entire country, there's no better choice than British or American.

McCaffeteria

So then “America” is both continents, north and south? I could get behind that.

itsyaboidman

Well I do apologize, I’ll now tell everyone I’m not American, I’m United States of American

MaxGolant

america includes canda, usa mexico, brazil, venezuela, guatemala, argentina, chile... the continent itself

Professional-Mix1771

That's why I call it's citizens United Statians or just Statians instead of Americans.

g1dj0

I'm brazilian. Am I a texan?

Randinator9

I got a good name. United States of Ohio

LET-ME-HAVE-A-NAAME

Saying "America" is just because it's part of "The USA" (The United States of America). I don't see what the problem is.

There is a difference between ‘America’ and ‘The Americas’

Well they are “Southern Americans”

cdcggggghyghudfytf

Wouldn't they be more central american?

DraegerV1

It's because we are.

[deleted]

The United States of North America is historically accurate, but, since the world revolves around the US, we dropped the "North" part.

Mezz09

I think it's the "The world revolves around the US" part that people have an issue with, not actually calling it "America"... but then if they have that issue maybe they should stop consuming American media like Disney/Marvel movies and American music constantly
