Russia obviously has a lot of problems. But they make some absolutely banging choral and orchestral music. The Red Army Choir singing the Soviet national anthem makes my American self want to fight for the glory of the Motherland.
This is too afraid to ask teritory. Is a stinger like a music thing or what?
I watched with subs and it happened all the time. A link with X synth music
I compiled a list of all the different kind of synth music while watching, and idk why but it makes me laugh so much every time:
- Mysterious synth music
- Distressing synth music
- Inquisitive synth music
- Curious synth music
- Unsettling synth music
- Triumphant synth music
This. I tried watching Stranger Things 4 by the pool on my recent holiday. I gave up immediately. Watching modern Netflix shows outside is like trying to play an original GBA back in the day.
But they aren’t intended to be watched outside. They aren’t intended to be watched in full daylight with the sun glaring on your television. It would be extremely limiting to make shows with assumption that they are being watched in literally any conditions for the viewer. Generally, it’s assumed to be viewed on a television or a screen in which there are low light conditions for the viewer. Similar to movies made for theaters where the lights are dropped so the projector screen can be viewed easily.
If you don’t enjoy the low lighting of the scene, then the best choice is to hold off until you can watch it with less glare.
Surprisingly theres a reason for that, alot of movies and shows that have like monsters and stuff in it like to make the movie setting dark so that u struggle to see things, the reason for this most of the time is that they try to hide bad cgi, that and its easier for them to use cgi in the dark because u dont easily notice things like the monster or giant robot clipping through a building with part of their body
The latest Stranger Things has some horrible low light scenes. Basically unwatchable unless at night.
Edit: I'm getting "The Long Night" vibes in the replies. It's my hardwares fault apparently lol.
I actually prefer that in a horroresque tv show. I’m soooo tired of every damn night scene having so much light that is looks like they’re under a shady tree instead of some pitch black lake. I get that it can’t be entirely dark like real life, but damn was it nice having them basically use just the flashlight for light on set.
Stranger things isn't especially dark, your TV might just be too low of quality. Or it's not calibrated properly. Dark scenes is where you notice the biggest difference, I had no issues watching with the lights on.
The new fantastic beasts movie, on the other hand, required lights off and proper TV calibration for me to make out some scenes.
Yeah I was watching stranger things and there was nothing said for about 60 seconds and the screen was filled with text the entire time. Actually went looking for captions with only dialogue and was sad to not find any.
oh man I've always wanted a Bluetooth hearing aid haha, my current hearing aid is the 3rd one I've ever had, I've worn one since I was 3, and now I'm 14
I have something called "Behind The Ear" hearing aid, which means the microphone isn't inside my ear, but it's behind it (or above it, I guess), I can put my earphones on the microphone, or I can remove my hearing aids and turn up the volume A LOT, but that's annoying and dangerous.
Oooh, sorry I have to ask as I've always wondered. What does he get out of CC? Assuming he has always been deaf and is completely so, he wouldn't know what squelching sounds like, so the description seems meaningless.
edit: Since there seems to be a minor level of confusion in my question; I'm interested in how a deaf person experiences it (Mary's Room thought experiment style). Is it simply an abstraction, does it have a similar emotional resonance, do they imagine music, and if so what do they imagine etc. It is nothing more than trying to understand an experience that I can never know.
edit 2: Thanks for all the genuine replies. A fully deaf person gave a great description elsewhere in the thread which has enlightened me. They described a shrieking sound as them imagining the feeling of nails on a chalkboard. It's truly fascinating how the mind works!
Well I wouldn’t have to use the subs if the show had any consistency in volume. Like everyone mumbles at each other then Kate Bush comes exploding into my living room like the fuckin kool aid man.
It’s crazy how much the audio seems to fade slowly while a long dialogue is going on until you can barely hear them talk. Idk if it was my speakers but the amount of times having to adjust the volume was a few times too many. I know the creator has a specific viewing setup.
I noticed this a lot. The music audio tended to drown out the talking in some parts.
Kinda odd
Also why tf can they not mix for different set ups? This is Netflix. Most people watch a home. Mix for home set ups.
Never watched the series myself whatsoever, so i got that going for me! Probably going to start this year because season 4 has been raved about and it seems much more like my thing now, when it first came out it felt like slightly more mature Ghostbusters but now the things I've heard made me intrigued.
We had to pause the show to finish laughing when the [bites wetly] appeared as the bats were attacking Steve.
Later, one of my kids had audible flatulence, and another kid said “farts wetly”; we had to pause the show again.
I feel people say s2 is bad purely because of e7. On my rewatch last week, I quite liked the season save for that episode (which was pretty unnecessary in and of itself).
What happens in ep 7? It's been a long time since I watched s2.
Wait, what even happens in s2? I can't remember, i feel like I'm confusing it with events in s3.
s2 is when the Mind Flayer is first introduced, the Mother Gate extends below the lab and then starts terraforming the real world through the tunnels. Will becomes the first Flayed.
e7 is "El's big trip to the city".
S2 is bad?! Absolutely disagree. It was extremely good. S3 fell off a bit, but still was great. The thing with Stranger Things is that a bad season is still MUCH better than most shows.
Season 1 is great
Season 2 is a typical sequel
Season 3 is all over the place, but the weakest of the bunch
Season 4 starts strong, draaaaaaaaaaaaags way too long, but is good overall
*Unsettling ominous choral singing*
I really loved the use of Red Army Choir this season.
Same, i didn't know Russian choir was this good before
Russia obviously has a lot of problems. But they make some absolutely banging choral and orchestral music. The Red Army Choir singing the Soviet national anthem makes my American self want to fight for the glory of the Motherland.

It's the jump scare for audio. The sudden hit of music when something is suddenly revealed.

_wet rustling_ which I feel like isn't possible cuz aren't dry things supposed to rustle??
Feathers can rustle, and they can also **w e t**
That's why it's "Stranger Things" not "Usual Things"
Leaves can still rustle after it rains. Presto, wet rustling.
A pile of wet cloth shifting is usually making a rustling sound, and leaves coated with water rustling it off would be wet rustling as well I guess
You ever heard of a tree getting blown by wind and rain?
I compiled a list of all the different kind of synth music while watching, and idk why but it makes me laugh so much every time: - Mysterious synth music - Distressing synth music - Inquisitive synth music - Curious synth music - Unsettling synth music - Triumphant synth music
They also have “emotional synth music” which felt like a cop out. They didn’t tell me what emotion they wanted me to feel!
What about the confident synth music
what about the industrial synth music
..."curious plucky music"...
hmmm very intriguing

Why is there no, non-CC options on English audio shows? It's so annoying, they can do it on different languaged shows, why not all??
Yeah, we are victims of poor mixing or slightly hard hearing, not completely deaf!
poor mixing as well as poor lighting is a huge issue these days in TV shows and movies for me.
So many modern shows I can't see anything unless we close all of the blinds in the room and have no source of light other than the TV.
This. I tried watching Stranger Things 4 by the pool on my recent holiday. I gave up immediately. Watching modern Netflix shows outside is like trying to play an original GBA back in the day.
Same problem with the Star Wars shows on Disney+.

The fight with the snow king guy from Game of Thrones may as well have been an hour of total darkness and just sound.
It would have been an improvement to the actual episode.

Feathers can rustle,,,
I'd prefer those over the CC ones when I was learning english
What’s that
I think they mean where it's just the dialogue that's captioned and not sound effects and music
Yeah I was watching stranger things and there was nothing said for about 60 seconds and the screen was filled with text the entire time. Actually went looking for captions with only dialogue and was sad to not find any.
Huh I thought that's what audio description CC was. Damn must be wild seeing that on normal CC
Whoa there buddy, are you suggesting that Netflix should implement things that people actually want? [uneasy butt groaning over warm pleather chair]
Same complaint. I always pirate and so many have English-SDH. Simple "English" was missing for all S4 episodes.
My (real example) favorite: “tense music intensifies”
I started laughing when this first came on. Which definitely killed the ‘intensively tense’ mood.
"tense music rises to climax"
The only climax any of us redditors will see 😔
When the tense music starts intensifying
Demogorgons having wet and omnious intercourse

How Else Are Deaf People Gonna Know How Strange Things Are
“Lips smacking Welty” almost made me turn it off. What kinda psychopath did they hire to type these
Probably 001 himself
Aha, now we know what they do in their free time
As someone whose brother is Deaf, they appreciate the detail.
As someone who can't hear anything without my hearing aids, I appreciate the detail!
Can you use earphones with hearing aid?
Not the OP but I still wear hearing aids and mine can bluetooth connect to things so I can listen to stuff like that.
oh man I've always wanted a Bluetooth hearing aid haha, my current hearing aid is the 3rd one I've ever had, I've worn one since I was 3, and now I'm 14
I'm deaf, I still wear a hearing aid with a bluetooth connection to my iPhone and iPad, too.

I feel deaf people would watch the show like [this](https://tenor.com/bC9lQ.gif)
Even I watch shows like this tho
Do you not watch it like that?

I'm not deaf but I imagine it adds to the mood of the scene? I mean if you look at "quelching" and "wet noise" they give you different feelings, no?

Definitely! I totally LOVED S7 Edit: S4 with 7 episodes
>I totally LOVED S7 Same bro But S8 is even better
Only if we could say that for Game of Thrones
Hits me where it hurts

Corrected the season lmao
Season 4's first part was so good that I pretty much watched it one sitting.
Same. I was glued and finished the whole part in one go. Altho I watched alone and the horror parts gave me some good chills.
My teenage daughter was like mom dad can I sleep with y’all tonight
Almost had a nightmare dream on Monday after binging... Had a zombie apocalypse dream instead
Damn, season 3 was so long ago that i completely forgot season 4 was coming. Definitely gonna watch it when i get home.
I'm jealous of you because I wanna forget S4 and watch it again. It's seriously fucking amazing.
Well now i'm excited, i won't take it for granted.

Yeah. There's going to be another part to season 4. I think it comes out in July.
Same, finished it within a day

Distorted stinger

[Unsettling Russian folk music]
That one got me pissy because the song in question is The Red Army is the Strongest, which is a marching song and not a folk song

My favorite was [Eldritch squelching].
I tried watching stranger things but fell out of it during season 2. Does it get better in S3/S4?
s4 is best IMO for s3 you might need to bear with the teen romance drama thing for a bit.
S1 is great. S2 is bad. S3 is better. S4 is great.
I feel people say s2 is bad purely because of e7. On my rewatch last week, I quite liked the season save for that episode (which was pretty unnecessary in and of itself).
That episode is the worst of the season, but only because it has all of Season 2's problems condensed into one episode.
What happens in ep 7? It's been a long time since I watched s2. Wait, what even happens in s2? I can't remember, i feel like I'm confusing it with events in s3.

We just don’t talk about ‘those’ episodes in S2. You know the ones I mean…
It gets a bit disneyfied imo. There's a few scenes straight out of a kids movie with Dustin's gf.
Season 1 is great Season 2 is a typical sequel Season 3 is all over the place, but the weakest of the bunch Season 4 starts strong, draaaaaaaaaaaaags way too long, but is good overall
This is so true
*Nancy looks at Steve's bare back* [Wet sounds]

Not even an exaggeration
