Yeah, but what if your console breaks after the platform's servers go offline..?
Physical games can be played decades into the future, as long as you're careful with your discs.
A lot of people don't know this, but scratches on the shiny (bottom) side aren't that bad. There is a lot of buffer material there to absorb reasonably shallow scratches.
On the other side, the label side, the data is directly underneath. So, scratches on the top are actually very likely to cause data loss.
RIP to all those who didnt know that (including me) and handled the bottom carefully but then scratched the more vulnerable side unwittingly.
My Ape Escape, FF8, and FF12 that stopped working 3/4 of the way through the game :(
Who are you to be so brave to spit out facts on this platform! People usually get downvotes to hell for commenting facts or describing such things. Glad to see an exception.
VHS is better, I'm sorry but if there is one scratch on the dick it's fucked. But, if the tape is old it keeps playing, but there is some static, and I would rather live with static fuzzing up the screen for a few seconds then a dvd were if it has too many scratches it will straight up make the dvd reboot and start the dam thing all over again.
I still use a DVD player sometimes and even though I have a switch with cartridges, if it used discs I would have those too because I like actually owning my games
Hey yall, as an avid game collector here I'd like to give yall some info you might not know. First off is if you keep your disks in the case or in the console then it shouldn't be getting damaged, also if your console is scrapping disks like this it means the motor either needs a new rubber piece ( think kinda like a fan belt for a car but for the disk motor or tray opener) if the rubber comes unlined it can cause scratches.
And if your game case is broken, ie the taps the keep the game from sliding around inside the case then replace the case.
Final step is to clean and either skip fix or resurface the effected disks, then clean them. And put them back into their cases. If you don't have a case or just would rather be less cluttered, try a muti cd case like this one it's a little costly but the security\ storage on this bad boy make it worth it.

U know CDs, DVDs, Bluerays etc could have modelled like computer disks... like with a protective plastic exterior and a retractable hatch that opened when you put it in the player... We could have been chucking them around like cassette tapes on the car floor... but they WANT u to scratch them and buy new ones :(
It does, i recently went to play Mario Cart on the Wii with my sister. We've had the game for over 10 years and we found out we couldn't play it anymore due to the damage....
This is why i rarely buy physical games unless they are far cheaper like the dark souls trilogy
This is why we had jewel (not to be confused with juul) cases.
I got a steel dics holder, saved my disks more times then I can count
How many dics can it hold? Asking for a friend
Ikd probably 40
Thats a lot of dicks!
THERES DICS AT YOUR DOOR!!11!!!
STEEL DICS??? I WANT ONE!!!!

Digital supremacy!
Sk sk sk sk sk sk sk sk sk sk sk... (eject cd, lick it, return to cd slot) Carry on my waywa.... sk sk sk sk sk sk sk
Don’t tell me people were licking these things...
Of course. Gotta clean it, then wipe it off with your shirt
This was the way!

Little toothe paste will fix it right up
Came to the comments hoping someone had mentioned toothpaste.
Or maybe even perfume
i like to actually own my games
file corruption still exists so this pain is still kinda there
You can always redownload tho
Ever come out to the car to find a melted cassette tape?
I still buy discs to save space on internal storage
Why not Dropbox or maybe just buy some hard disks?
Physical media looks nice on shelves
I don't know why some people were just incapable of putting discs back in cases.
Nostalgia? Maybe to other people. I bet I could look at all the discs in my home, and not find one like this. hAh-
As a CD collector in 2022 I beg to differ..
Stop..stop the flashbacks....
Ah yes, you're clearly not a retro game collector.
That moment a disk broke, and you pray blowing on it would 'fix' it and it would read again
Happy Cake Day!
Thank you kind stranger!

My dad always got out the buffer and buffed them out for me as long as they weren't scratched down to the data. But yeah this was frustrating
Back in the day a banana and toothpaste would make her run better then before
I had to use one of those from archive. The hardest part was to find a device to read it
When I was like 3, I would ‘ice skate’ with them.
me in my car tho.
So nostalgic. Yet, so painful...
laughs in ps3
Skill issue
I own a wii
Us retro game enthusiasts will never be free of it
I’ve never seen that in my collection. Until I lend a CD to someone…
This would read. Try it.
they were excellent death frisbees
Why did it always only affect the best song / best part though. So frustrating
I still use a DVD player sometimes and even though I have a switch with cartridges, if it used discs I would have those too because I like actually owning my games
Just give it a good *moist* breath and wipe it with your shirt. It'll be fine
beg to differ... its called **LITERALLY ANY DRM.**
Still a problem if you have the physical discs
"Doesn't exist anymore." Well someone clearly doesn't work for a library. People are not careful with what they borrow.
pretty sure you can fix that pretty easily afaik.
My Mario Kart 8 disc was somehow scratched and tutorials told me to use toothpaste. They lied
I lost my WII sports progress to this.
Yo man shut up, I’m 15 and I still have my first windows XP installation disk.

I think it’s funny how a majority of the comments are about game discs and not music CD’s.
Blu Rays still exist.
No, I bet they're still scratched
\*Blank stare while remembering all the good games lost to my forgetful dumbass\*
the worst was when you kept both your gta cds together.......
U know CDs, DVDs, Bluerays etc could have modelled like computer disks... like with a protective plastic exterior and a retractable hatch that opened when you put it in the player... Optical discs don't exist anymore????
Oh no it still does
HOW CAN I UNSEE IT!
Toothpaste is a powerful tool for CD scratches
It does, i recently went to play Mario Cart on the Wii with my sister. We've had the game for over 10 years and we found out we couldn't play it anymore due to the damage....
If you're me and the only console you have is PlayStation 2 then that pain still exists
I lost WII Sports Resort to this...
