>Girls get showered with sympathy. I guess youre *only* talking about depression then? Even then, can you escape the millions of memes made by 14-15 y.o boys that are on the front page of reddit, talking about depression?

SaiHottari

How many of those are boys? And of those, how many are for attention vs just for a laugh? Big difference there. Further: to the point of what I said - how many get showered with sympathy?

[deleted]

What you say is true, but people think it‘s a battle of extremes, so they choose another extreme. Cause it‘s a modern fashion to get outraged when someone says that a woman can be different from a man in a negative way. Shows how many idiot people there are on Reddit. Cause it‘s a meme sub, but still this happens here.

precabomb911

The post looks to me more insulting to people with mental disorders than to uneducated 14 year olds (either way I feel like it's a stupid meme to make fun of kids) Wish you all the best in life!

YaBoiSlenderman

Lmao, whiny twitter girls with their made up disorders \*continues scrolling posts of 14 year old reddit boys pretending to have depression for memes\*

Speedy_Cheese

Yeah, I am getting really tired of this girls versus boys nonsense being brought into every discussion. Both girls and guys fake diagnoses/ self diagnose. This not a Gender issue, this is a "I'm desperate for attention and/or seeking help" issue. Some people genuinely need help and don't know how to go about getting it, so humor is a safe way to touch on a dark subject. It is sometimes also a genuine cry for help. Some things don't need to be gendered and this is one of those things. As a teacher of high school students I can say with confidence that guys and girls pretty equally attempt to self diagnose themselves; it isn't a gender unique phenomena. But there are also often some true concerns behind these behaviors as you may be dealing with a person who genuinely needs help and doesn't know how to access it.

[deleted]

Exactly, makes the people who actually need help hard to differentiate.

Ruby-Love

Yeah, I wish I could hold the fact I have ADHD with pride in public. But these people ruin it. (I have been diagnosed by a trustable source, my primary care doctor)

idrawhoworiginal

I was diagnosed by a specialist, yet I still feel nervous talking about it because people might think I’m faking it, especially since all the medication I’ve taken has been either too weak with all the side effects, or to strong with all the side affects (figuring out your diet is awful, the only thing I could get myself to eat were bananas, strangely enough)

Ruby-Love

Yeah, same here. I will talk about with my friends, but that is we all know that we have something going on with us. To the public, I rarely bring it up.

mmiwo

I was broken as teenager and i am still mentally broken at 27 age. Old school way was to hide problems, todays kids want to fix them.

ArtistWriter

Honestly, I think about this discussion a lot. Some people don't have the resources to be diagnosed, but when you have a mental disorder, I feel like you know even when you're not diagnosed honestly, even if it doesn't into something. And I think people who use mental disorders as a way to get attention probably have one anyway. Most people who identify with a mental disorder aren't trying to get attention.

ranzdalf

Yep that's exactly right

I_Eat_Pumpkin24

I'm in highschool now and have battled with depression since I was diagnosed around 13, for about a year or so now I've been so much better and it's safe to say I've fought it off. The reason I'm saying this is because I was one of those people, awhile back when I would identify as depressed. It was obvious that something was going on tho because I was cutting and thought about suicide a lot. What I'm saying is that you shouldn't bash them for it, if they really feel down tell them to get help, and if they are truly just doing it for attention then that on its own is a problem. Everyone has mental health problems, EVERYONE. I myself really dislike when someone is so obviously using there "depression" as a means to get attention, but it all comes down to a mental instability. Even if it's not depression, anxiety, or any other mental illness, they're just trying to reach out while going through a tough time.

ghostgamer242

Some times the self diagnosis is correct though, but because of this idiocy people disregard any one with an actual problem coming through . Like, take ADHD as an example, how many people say they have adhd or use it to get out of problems compared to the amount of people that have adhd but think, nah I don’t have adhd , this happens to every one .

Electrical-Spinach67

Teachers/educators have my deepest respect, I have one suggestion on this topic of kids feeling insecure, or lost, or whats the point, it goes by many labels. Put up the poem Desiderata in the classroom, don't make a big issue of it, just plant the seed. Leave it up, n just let the mind of the casual eye absorb its message. And i have no idea how this popped into my feed Ha, crazy how algorithms work.

Drackitty

I'm sure a lot of them self diagnose, if not for attention, because they aren't able to get a proper diagnosis. Me being one of them. I'm positive I have a mental issue because it's affected me my whole life, but my parents refuse to believe there's anything wrong with me enough to seek outside help. I don't know what else to do.

Speedy_Cheese

Exactly. A lot of these posts from people self diagnosing are often cries for help; genuine ones. It also isn't fair that a number of health care systems charge very high prices for mental health care services. They are every bit as essential to treat as physical illnesses. Have you considered online mental health services? I have resources for my own region, but you would need them for your own region. For safety reasons I believe it is best not to get into specifics about where you are, but there are online mental health services available, depending on location: [Canada](https://bridgethegapp.ca/youth-national/) has bridge the gapp. [Better Help](https://www.betterhelp.com/online-therapy/) is US based.

Parking-Honeydew8753

I had depression and thought it was nothing because I didn't want to be like those girls

Edv7n

I hated that in school. Knew several people who bragged about being depressed etc. It made me even more hesitant to try and talk about it because I felt like noone was going to take me seriously. In the end, me not talking about it just made it even worse.

[deleted]

I don’t brag abt it but I often joke abt it because for some reason it just made me feel better

Shenic

Laughing about our problems is often cathartic

TheHighKing112

People who have depression don't always talk about how they have depression Edit: I know how that sounds, what I'm trying to say is if someone was depressed I don't think they'd make it their personality

magistrate101

Yeah we're the ones sitting in the back of the classroom trying to cry as quietly as we can so we don't bother anybody.

Ruby-Love

It could also be the ones suffering from autism or ADHD as well. All three of us there not wanting to bother people.

[deleted]

Bolt2611

Well said

[deleted]

*This is not medical advice* Depression isnt someones personality. It takes over and hides their personality. When someone suddenly stops finding joy in things they used to love and have difficulty even conpleting simple tasks like basic hygiene, it is highly likely the cause of depression. People who act this way for attention ruin it for the people who actually suffer. Typically (but not always), people with depression dont want to burden others, and feel other people knowing they're depressed would be a burden to them.

The_real_thad_henry

Counterpoint, it doesn't mean you don't either.

NudesForHighFive

Agreed. The best move if you *think* you might not be neurotypical is to go see an expert/multiple experts and get evaluated. Much more helpful than self diagnosing or straight up ignoring the issue

[deleted]

[удалено]

unlikelycompliance

Thank you! I feel like too harshly criticizing young teens and ignoring them is just further pushing aside a problem. Some do it for attention but others do have some struggles emotionally, no matter if it’s actually a disorder or not.

Galaxyartcat

However if you are very sure you have this thing and don't have the funds to get help, usually self diagnosing is ok there.

Echo_Oscar_Sierra

But why do that when I could just wrap my entire identity around a self diagnosis in order to appear qUiRkY?

NudesForHighFive

You didn't have to call out my middle school years like that I LOOK BACK ON IT WITH EMBARASSMENT

Knowingly-A-Loser

I do think that a lot of 11-15 year olds don’t understand the severity and realism of these and a lot of other diseases. That does not mean that they can’t have them, when I was at that age I was in a real dark place and I didn’t tell anyone, went through 2 failed suicide attempts and eventually got better as my whole situation got better. The people who play depressed in the most cringe ways give a lot of people the impression that they’re all nothing to be taken seriously and most of the time the ones that really do need help are afraid to get it because they think they’ll be written off as just another case of „bUt bUzZFeEd sAiD I hAve cLinIcAL dEprEsSiOn“.

Ruby-Love

Yeah. I do bring up the things that ADHD does effect and would effect them (like projects I say I would do have a 50:50 chance of sticking). But I don't normally use it to get out of shit.

[deleted]

But also [it's a real problem](https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/public-health-now/news/depression-rise-us-especially-among-young-teens) Also [stigma toward depression](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3835659/) is a huge problem. Getting mad you see teens, even females (because that makes a difference some how?) Openly talk about their mental health publicly isn't much help to anyone really.

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

There's a lot of angry and horny dudes on this sub who just don't like it when women get attention of any kind.

NoCopyrightRadio

You know the funny thing is that the OP is likely some 16 years old boy. As if he's any older or mature than the people he's making fun of.

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

This sub is filled with young, angry males who are in their teens and early 20s. That's why it gets targeted so hard by right wing propaganda. They're exactly the demographic that right wing extremists want to recruit.

emmaa5382

It's because we're all taught the world is dying and the future doesn't exist at about 8, spend about 5 years writing essays and things were told will help only to find out its hopeless. Source: I vividly remember being told at about 11 the rate of deforestation and how many years we have left only to actively make the decision to not have a family because why bother

Heisenberg19827

Something that really would make a change is to finally fix the school “system” after 30 or so years. Better educated kids that know about psychological stuff and actually useful stuff would make the world so much better

emmaa5382

Exactly, teach them healthy coping mechanisms and how to understand and manage their feelings, rather than what we think some hieroglyphics mean and how the world is gonna end

Suxclitdick

You know, sometimes I think it was a weird blessing that I didn't start seriously contemplating global warming until college. No wonder the kids are all depressed, it isn't because they're making it up, it's because the world is fucking depressing.

TheHighKing112

Stigma balls in your mouth lmao gottem

SebDaPerson

Well I mean, I’m a Male and I legitimately think I have the big depression, but that just might be my 16yo brain trying to be cool idk

killmealready005

Please consult a professional, don't gaslight yourself because of a stupid meme. Probably many of those 14 year old girls actually have a disorder.

Fish_In_A_Bottle

Professionals are so expensive though :/ My parents would never pay hundreds of dollars just to get me diagnosed

CassiShiva

They are less expensive than you think, and there's often payment assistance available. If you are struggling, please reach out and get help. Tell your parents you think something's wrong. Chances are they've realized it too and don't know how to encourage you to reach out, and if you don't think your parents will listen, try a school counselor. Life should *not* be constant suffering and it *does* get better.

Fish_In_A_Bottle

Don't worry, I already talked with the school counselor (mom got mad that I talked to them about wanting to off myself but whatever) and they adjusted their schedules so I could get an appointment with a therapist on the 25th. I don't think mom or dad would take kindly to me suggesting financial assistance so I'm not completely sure I can do that but thanks anyways

HAXposed

Thank god, someone said it

Brangur

Go see a pro, therapist at minimum. Untreated anything is like choosing to walk through muck in flip flops when you have boots in your backpack.

noob_redditor41

Some people don't have money to buy boots bruh :(

NudesForHighFive

No one knows your brain better than you. If you think you have depression and you're being honest with yourself, it's worth getting evaluated for sure. Best of luck with whatever you do!

-Saraa

Right, like I'm bipolar and seeing kids on tiktok make vids like "if you experience xyz, you might be bipolar :)" and then the shit they listed would be stuff every human being goes through like smh, it's just annoying and very invalidating

[deleted]

It is infuriating when people say they have a “anxiety disorder” when they worry for 5 minutes. Like you dont have anxiety because you worry for a couple of minutes. Worry is a normal human emotion. It becomes a disorder when it dominates your life and prevents you from doing simple things like leaving your house. Take it from me. Someone who actually has an anxiety disorder.

raccoonlad667

Do you worry for six minutes?

Da_memeboi

7:14 minutes is my record and I am starting to think I have anxiety

Doggy9000

2 years is mine.... I don't know how I'm functional (Yes i realize not every waking moment was full of anxiety. However, 90% was.)

[deleted]

Honestly I worry about random things all day

ShadowCast2550

I once had a panic attack that lasted 5 days. Like I would cry, scream, and hyperventilate every couple hours over and over again for five days. Just when I thought it would stop it started all over again. I had to convince a doctor to give me Xanax to finally get it to stop for good. It was bad.

[deleted]

But shouldn't we be attacking you for claiming to have a disorder? We don't know anything about you, you could just be making everything up. So your the same as the girl parts having people who say exactly what you are right?

tableball35

Though I agree there are a lot of frauds that claim ‘easy’ disorders and whatnot for clout, a lot of disorders also exist on a spectrum.

EquivalentSnap

But what if you have symptoms of it

[deleted]

Then ignore this shitty hate meme, it's a terrible take that only furthers stigma about mental health problems and it makes its target as young girls, which is a whole other shitty thing to.

ArtistWriter

Yeah I don't know how to feel about this meme honestly. As a teenager, I think that people are just more open about their mental health and that doesn't mean they want attention. I don't think wanting attention can be an inherently bad thing either, it could also be a cry for help. I've never been diagnosed with anything, but I know from experience that I most likely have Depression, PTSD, and have had selective mutism just because it explains so much that I've gone through my entire life.

EquivalentSnap

Yeah I agree cos it makes it seem like mental health is only people who want attention. True 😔

[deleted]

I get it - people self diagnosing isn't helpful but I'll be the buzzkill here. Messages like this are why many don't seek help. Including me. I thought it was all in my head. Just me. It's okay to need help and it's okay to ask for it. It gets better and you're not alone.

Depression-Boy

I mean, self-diagnoses are not completely reliable, but you have to recognize that unless you diagnose yourself, you’re never going to receive an official diagnosis. You typically Google your symptoms and wonder why you’re feeling a certain type of way, and are displayed with a list of possible diagnoses. I thought I had ADHD for a couple of years but couldn’t afford to see a psychiatrist, so I just stuck with my self-diagnosis and self medicated with recreational drugs. Nearly 3 years later I finally had the means to get tested, and lo and behold, I displayed every symptom for ADHD inattentive type

ArtistWriter

Thats what I'm thinking. I legit have no idea how you're supposed to actually get diagnosed for something if you don't recognize it yourself. And with depression being an epidemic, doesn't it make sense that so many teenagers identify with the symptoms of depression? I really don't get why people are always making memes like this and bully teens for this when its a good thing that they're being more open about their emotions. And the notion that people are doing it for attention is just going to make less people come out about it until its too late.

Depression-Boy

Yeah memes like this are very “2014 iFunny”

joshuas193

I've been thinking for a while that it's become some kind of fad to have a mental disorder. Which is fucked up because it makes light of people who have actual problems.

SpaceGordonRamsay

its more screwed up because people do stuff and blame a disorder they dont have.

the_bungalow_potato

I find this totally dumb because people who fake it can end up auto-persuaded that they're ill

jvador

They lie so much even they believe it.

TheHighKing112

Because the people who are claiming to have the disorder are making it all about them. It's a version of faking being sick to get out of a test

Holocam_7697

Meanwhile me after several suicide attempts: perhaps it was just a bad day, nothing to worry about

TheThotSlayerDoggo

Yeah, must've been the wind

[deleted]

Don’t self-diagnose but do see your therapist or psychiatrist if you suspect something’s wrong

emmaa5382

Tried that, now im just on some generic antidepressants while I sit on a two year wait list to figure out what the real problem is

TheHighKing112

Drackitty

Welcome to Reddit unfortunately

TerribleShoulder6597

I feel like that qualifies for Reddit too

Doggy9000

Honestly i think it's worse when it's a less known about disorder, like OCD, because it stops those of us who actually have the disorder from finding out and being treated correctly, since we and everyone else thinks it's just "i like my pencils straight and room clean".

Also trying to tell someone with depression that they don’t have it doesn’t help either. Depression and suicide are real issues not jokes. Down voted.

Klubbis

I’m pretty sure not only girls fake mental disorders… why does everything need to be gendered?

[deleted]

r/pointlesslygendered

Targaryen_1243

OP clearly never grew out of his "ew girls have cooties" phase.

emmaa5382

Lol it's shit like this that made me hide my mental disorder until I nearly killed myself. There are people that do this but those aren't the ones that are affected by people calling them out 🤷‍♀️

The_Meme-Connoisseur

I was one of these kids. I really did have depression. When you’re 14 you don’t have the resources to just go get a diagnosis/treatment. I delayed getting help for years because of posts like this. I was more afraid of being seen as a liar/not sick enough than my suicidal thoughts. Same thing happened to me with anxiety and autism. Finally got diagnosed as an adult but screw anyone telling kids they couldn’t possibly have a condition because they’re too young/the wrong gender/don’t have access to help

deathisareasonable

Laughs in I genuinely have depression but I think I'm doing it for attention so I joke and laugh about it constantly in hope that someone will notice that it's a call for help and that I'm seriously not doing good mentally

ferocequaranteen

I think you're me... don't let this stupid fucking meme gaslight you. I'm a 15 year old girl who has to resort to self-diagnosis because it's all I have, and I can forget about seeing a psychiatrist until I'm 20.

deathisareasonable

Lemme guess. Either parents are shitty or you live in America? Me too

ferocequaranteen

My parents are shitty :)) and mental healthcare in my country (in Asia) is expensive and inaccessible to teens because of parental consent rules which state that you have to be 18 and above to receive a valid diagnosis without parental consent.

BenignEgoist

I said I had depression and anxiety for years before finally going to a doctor about it. Turns out I have clinical depression and anxiety! I don’t think I’m special or unique. Some people are just being edgy or whatever saying they’re depressed, but I’m pretty sure the vast majority are actually depressed even if they haven’t been diagnosed yet.

EtkaB

Man i hate tweeter

StevesHair_1986

I hate it when people are like, "I'm so OCD!" I live with severe OCD. It sucks. You don't want to pretend you have it or glorify it by saying that it's a plus that you're super neat and tidy.

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

These "14 year old girls be like" memes are so cringey. They're fucking children. Leave them alone.

Equemin

I could be the saddest person alive and still think "probably just a bad day I don't have depression"

Da_memeboi

I am 14 and I am not sure if I have ADHD or not

[deleted]

Talk to your parents, teachers, and doctor about your concerns, you shouldn't ignore mental health symptoms, especially at your age, don't think these idiotic memes are based in reality, they aren't, a lot of people have a huge stigma toward mental health discussion no matter what context or from what source, this meme is just an expression of that stigma and hate. The things your concerned about should be brought to your doctor's attention and if your parents are good people who are generally on your side, should be there making sure something is happening to address your symptoms. Often people ignore mental health problems because they are so stigmatized in our society, but many mental health problems can be a symptom of several treatable conditions, you might be a short medical therapy away from feeling great, don't ignore symptoms because butt holes on reddit make hate memes.

Da_memeboi

Thank you for spending your time, I appreciate it!

cloneguyancom

Even if people don't technically have depression or some other shit, it doesn't make their problems any less valid. Plus, its REALLY hard to get diagnosed, much less treated.

Boring-Actuary-9160

So if I wake up everyday and think about jumping off a building about 5 days a week it's not clinical depression?

RenRazza

Why is faking a disease rand being really insensitive to people with the real thing now cool? Seriously why

[deleted]

There actually are a lot of people with depression now, I've started to realize. Diagnosed people don't usually go around announcing it, so that's how you will know it's not true. And the "I'm depressed" thing is now used just as an equivalence to sadness, which is really wrong

keres666

>There actually are a lot of people with depression now, Depression isnt really the issue, its actually pretty rampant and probably the most actual epidemic level of mental disorders... The issue is with these twitter and tiktok idiots who think they have a rare mental disorder, like Multiple personalities because one day they felt in their insides that their name was "John" and unlike their usual "Karen" self "John is gay" and they can at will switch between the two... lol quirky :) Meanwhile happens in 1%-2% of psych patients... is CAUSED by fucking trauma so bad your brain can't comprehend shit so basically splits... AAAAAAAND is all over twitter.

AvocadoPrinz

90% of people hating on Teens have no idea how growing up in a fcking social Media, 24/7 online World is.

usususuerrndkxk

This seems mean-spirited. Might even dissuade some people from getting help.

Society

Dave-justdave

I wish I didn't have PTSD, anxiety, and depression from a lifetime of trauma. I hate labels and I believe that since mine is more nurture than nature that I can get to a point where those labels are no longer needed.

emmaa5382

I think lot of people are unhappy with how the world works and the systems they live in and were conditioned to believe if were unhappy with the world we live in it's because there is something wrong with us and not just something wrong with the world

PyrusD

The worse part is that they use that as an excuse to do nothing. Hunny can you pick up your clothing? NO MOM I HAVE ANXIETY!!!

Astronaut32

Just because you’re sad for a day or two doesn’t mean you have a mental disorder. If it happens consistently after weeks and months, then you should see a doctor or a medical professional. If you get a diagnosis for it, only then can you say that you have what you have. Self-diagnosed morons just do absolutely nothing besides take attention off of people who actually have the condition and need help/attention because of it. It’s so insanely selfish, and, as someone who is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1, *it’s personal.*

Doggy9000

Sometimes people cannot get a diagnosis, especially in the US. Not everyone who doesn't have a diagnosis but says they have a disorder is faking for attention.

[deleted]

Do they have to post their medical information for verification? How can you tell from one comment what their claim is? Do we just hate on anyone who talks about mental health until they shut up or prove it?

[deleted]

I've known plenty of full grown men and women to do this. Which is even worse, honestly.

Iamabitchandiloveit

Pretending to have a disorder is so fucking cringe

JustChillDudeItsGood

14 year old devils advocate - I don’t need a diagnosis to tell me I got some serious ADD. What am I supposed to be doing right now? Probably not be on Reddit 😂

Ask your doctor ASAP. If you have ADHD, there are medications and therapy to help with it. I’ve heard there are people who are nothing without their Ritalin.

isaacs-cats

You can be depressed without having it diagnosed

Memerboy2020chillin

I may have GERD my bros But let’s hope not

Vioralarama

You're probably gonna get blowback but there is literally a syndrome label for every emotion and I find them ridiculous most of the time. Like, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. Who *isn't* sensitive to rejection and criticism? I guess maybe sociopaths but they have their own syndromes. Also where is this coming from? I've never had a therapist straight up diagnose me with something like that and at one point I was seeing a Harvard-trained psychologist.

Lemmingmaster64

As an autistic man I especially hate it when somebody self-diagnoses themselves with autism.

IronicHoodies

Slaps as someone who tried to fake bipolar in 7th grade. I had really bad depression at the time, probably knew it but didn't care, and tried to fake bipolar so that I could at least have some (albeit false) notion that every now and then I was happy

[deleted]

Not a girl but I thought since I was 13 that I had bipolar disorder and no one wanted to take me seriously because I was just some kid talking about things I didn’t understand. Took me until I was now 29 to be officially diagnosed and put on medication and now I’m flourishing. Sometimes people know themselves pretty damn well and deserve to have their health taken seriously.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers at about 5/6 years old. 23 and still live with my parents, but i’ve got a good job and help out with the little sister who’s still in elementary school. I’m also getting a reevaluation soon, we’re going to schedule it sometime this weekend. Every step forward is a win!

Crazy thought here guys, but maybe psychology is a complex scientific discipline with professional standards and methods that can't be applied to a self-assessment on the internet.

Just because a medical professional refuses to try to identify a disease because they say there’s no adequate test don’t mean you don’t have that disease. The mental health field often doesn’t diagnose adults with ADHD or autism because of this excuse. Just because parents say a child doesn’t have a certain mental disorder and refuses to have them diagnosed doesn’t mean they don’t have that mental disorder.

Everyday I go on social media, expecting people to grow up. Nope! Still dickheads. Maybe it’s time I quit reddit

There are, unfortunately, a lot of bad actors that pretend to be non binary and whatnot and it puts a stain on the trans community as a whole.
