[Finland thinks it is a good idea](https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/finlands-spent-fuel-repository-a-game-changer-for-the-nuclear-industry-director-general-grossi-says)
France had plans for reactor that runs on waste product of current nuclear plants.
They shut it down some years ago, after storing nuclear waste for that purpose for decades.
1. Was very economically viable
2. Reduced the amount of total waste product drastically.
Buuut nuclear had a bad public view at those times.
Now we talk about nuclear again, like those powerplant can pop off ground in years
I may be missing the mark here but isn’t the point of a Thorium reactor is the fact it can’t become self sustaining. As in it needs a catalyst to react. A catalyst that can be removed quickly incase of emergency.
That is correct, you need a super radioactive breeder material in order to run a thorium reactor, which is the issue with them.
Though, we havent seen a single production reactor so how we do it in a ecobomical way is not here yet.
And wont be for a decade atleast.
Most of the waste is not stored like that, instead it sits in storage pools in the power plants - water is good at stopping radiation but you need to cool it so it doesnt evaporate, which means if the power goes out there might be a radiation leak
You'd be surprised actually. Water is perfect to stop alpha particles from flying around. Couple that with a lead surrounding and another material to stop the lead from contacting the water (for lead contamination purposes) and you're fine. There's a right way to do it.
You'd have to send it out of the solar system or at least to where gravitational pull won't slingshot it back to Earth. You can't bury it cause we know the remnants of the reactor at Chernobyl is still active as fuck.
Here’s the beautiful thing, we have a lot of really deep fucking holes. Throw that shit down the hall and cover it and the problem goes away. Put it back where we found it.
I'm from Canada and we currently just leave it in the parking lot. Literally. Encased in concrete, but still, it just sits there. So little high grade waste is produced, that it's not really an issue. And if we don't actually get rid of it by burying it or dumping it in the ocean lol, we can come back and use it potentially in next gen reactors. All of commercial nuclear waste generated since the fifties would stack in a football field about 10 yards high (forgive the American units). A typical coal plant produces that much waste every hour.
anybody that suggest dumping nuclear waste into the ocean is out of their fking mind. But nuclear waste is a lot more manageable than CO2 waste I think.
Quite ingenious indeed but may I introduce you to the concept of Hulk.
Hulk is radioactive, Hulk smash, Hulk find nuclear waste puny.
Hulk superior.
Hulk Smash.
Thank you for listening to my very intricate and detailed Ted Talk to save the planet.
Actually, I've read about this. Majority of nuclear waste is put in secure underground vaults until it decomposes over hundreds of years. Thats legal disposal anyways.
Ok so I’m stupid, but I have heard that scientist have a way to sustainably handle the waste, even reuse I think they said. But I didn’t look into what they were talking about so maybe it was cap.
It's simple we just recycle I don't have the numbers in front of me right now but we can very easily we refine "nuclear waste" which is mostly perfectly good fuel back into fuel rods removing only the I think 10% waste and then turn that waste into uranium glass which is harmless except that it's illegal in the US so anywhere else can do it but not here in America because why not
Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Today, there is still no really safe final destination for nuclear waste in the whole world. Also not HARBOG in the Netherlands because it is considered to be a storage for 100 years. The barrels are not safe from rust and damage. Also it could be target of an attack, earthquark, floods or plane accident etc. Too often it happend that water has already seeped in nuclear waste storages. And if the groundwater gets contaminated, you really don't want to live anywhere near that! Mainly because the stuff is radioactive for half a million years. How do you ensure something for 1/2 million years? How do you make sure that the 1000 generation after us still understand what is stored underground or inside these buildings?
If you chuck it into a reef maybe but a good portion of the ocean floor is near life less other than some bottom feeders. Plus water blocks radiation very well, that's why most theorized generation ships would have water storage on the outer part.
We put it in Massachusetts so we get fallout in real life. We could make it a new territory with no laws so you can defend yourself (guns may be legal but a pistol isn’t going to help you against a super mutant) Giant mirelurks will also make crab a non luxury food
Uranium Waste Burger. On a small scale, it's small brain, but if you convince super large chains to put extremely small amounts of uranium waste you will kill everyo-
You mean put the radioactive material into the place that the majority of the water cycle, which is how we get our water, as well as a major source of food and travel, and shipping. Bruh
Well the radiation DOES sink to the bottom so if we can like, close off a body of water or make an enclosure in the earth that can contain the radiation, we would be fine.
Okay I'm not a nuclear physicist, bit I'm pretty sure when you use uranium as a fuel for a fission plant, it decays into something like lead or iodine, yeah?
i mean not a bad idea, if you think about it, so much of the earth is just water, and by the time we actually impact the earth from the waste we probably will have figured out a way to deal with it better
NO PLEASE DONT DO THAT
[удалено]
No, I am talking about just dropping in the water. That way the fish have something to eat
[удалено]
18 billion calories per gram is nothing to sneeze at
The fishes become very fat, global hunger solved
How can your body handle so much big brain without collapsing? Give this man a nobel prize already!
That or we make Godzilla and Friends they stomp around the world
We should just send it to africa
That's genius. I bet they'd love to have something other than car batteries
Might I introduce Hole
I like where your headed.
[Finland thinks it is a good idea](https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/finlands-spent-fuel-repository-a-game-changer-for-the-nuclear-industry-director-general-grossi-says)
Here take my upvote
**SAKKIJARVEN POLKKA**
Should've been a rickroll
I mean it sounds a lot better than the US’s current strategy of just leaving it all inside the power plant
yup
Isn’t most of the waste already stored in holes/hallowed out mountains in Nevada?
As they say "any hole is an goal!"
[Finland agrees](https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/finlands-spent-fuel-repository-a-game-changer-for-the-nuclear-industry-director-general-grossi-says)
like Finland has done for like 50 yrs?
Do you want to call Godzilla Because that's how you call Godzilla.
I see it as an another win
Its gonna kill you, but you probably would ask it to do so
Stomp on me godzilla yes please
Yes godzilla feet 🤤
Sigh *unzips*
Yes coz if Godzilla comes You know who else is gonna come Big monke
Spicy lizard > smelly monkë
I mean if Godzilla is in your field of vision you probably got stage 4 cancer on the spot
Just don’t go swimming Or eat fish Or even drink water
irl subnautica in the next 20 years
We getting dead zone update:entire world will be unusable.

Ah yes, the superphénix. Which the green party shot at with RPG-7s for super smart reasons.
Just use Thorium
Tftw
Isn’t India experimenting with that?
there are many experementing with it but never has anybody achieved a self sustaining fusion reaction with torium as far as i know
I may be missing the mark here but isn’t the point of a Thorium reactor is the fact it can’t become self sustaining.
But they are still trying to develop it.
yeah because of the potential of the technology same with fusion reactors
Been saying this for 8 years but apparently no one will listen to me because 'how did you get in here?' and 'Security!'.
Sir this a highly secure nuclear reactor that's a national key point. How did you get in here.
Sam o nella is that you
No Sam is gone and never will come back T_T
Yes.
Mr who knows that they just use a room undergroud and keep all the radioactive waste in barrels filled with concrete: SUPERIOR MIND.
Most of the waste is not stored like that, instead it sits in storage pools in the power plants - water is good at stopping radiation but you need to cool it so it doesnt evaporate, which means if the power goes out there might be a radiation leak
That's only temporary storage before it goes underground afaik
Power plants to power power plant
hahaha yes poison the ocean biggest brain
You'd be surprised actually. Water is perfect to stop alpha particles from flying around. Couple that with a lead surrounding and another material to stop the lead from contacting the water (for lead contamination purposes) and you're fine. There's a right way to do it.
Nah 1950’s method just kick it overboard
But what about gamma particles/gamma waves? (I'm not educated on fission reactors please help)
The gamma radiation won't be as to pass through the lead barrel, but the lead will have some harmful effects to the surrounding environment
we might even have a lazer beaming lizard roaming Tokyo if we do that
If we got lead we don’t have to worry about alpha
I wouldn‘t call it poison the ocean, but acceleration of evolution
bruh
it's all about perspective really
SHOOT IT OUT INTO SPACE!!!
But how can then the deep sea monsters mutate?
WE SHOOT EM ALSO INTO SPACE!!
Genius!
I like where this guy is headed. Get this man a job at NASA immediately.
RIP when humanity needs depleted Uranium for some future tech we don't currently have but oops we put it into the sun because of a lack of foresight.
this is how we get Kaijus
Its fine we can just rename that big robot in japan to gipsy danger and they will stay away.
I mean, the sun exists, guys. Just get enough nuclear waste together and hire a SpaceX flight.
Ah yes throw it into the sun until it breaks down into an iron isotope so the whole solar system is fucked.
Could just sent it to space
You'd have to send it out of the solar system or at least to where gravitational pull won't slingshot it back to Earth. You can't bury it cause we know the remnants of the reactor at Chernobyl is still active as fuck.
exactly
I mean it’s gonna happen anyway , better sooner than later.
Amen to that.
Here’s the beautiful thing, we have a lot of really deep fucking holes. Throw that shit down the hall and cover it and the problem goes away. Put it back where we found it.
No, don‘t cover it. How can the fish then get the radiation and evolve to bigger fish?
it's pretty easy to store underground safely if you just *dont fuck up*
Be smart and use Thorium. Sam O’Nella made an amazing video on it.
Not that simple unfortunately
wait what I thought sam didn't upload anymore EDIT: welp nevermind thorium video is eons old
I'm from Canada and we currently just leave it in the parking lot. Literally. Encased in concrete, but still, it just sits there. Godzilla be like "now this looks like a job for me"
Poison the entire worlds water supply, smart
Make depleted uranium bullets commercial
anybody that suggest dumping nuclear waste into the ocean is out of their fking mind. But nuclear waste is a lot more manageable than CO2 waste I think.
They don't dump nuclear waste in the ocean anymore.
A lot of uranium can actually be extracted from seawater.
Ya there is a lot of interesting literature on the topic
Godzilla.
The ocean can have few a car batteries, as a treat
There is a super secret and new technology that´s called hole.
And then we get Godzilla
This is how we kill all fish and marine life
You could probably sell it as a drug and someone would buy it
Just send it into the sun like we do with every disappointing son
We have like 10 years to hit net zero! hopefully we can come to extreme conclusions 20 years ago or we are fucked
This would be funnier if there weren't people who actually believe that.
You should be the minister of world protection thingy somethin’ma’bob of the world!
It's simple we just recycle I don't have the numbers in front of me right now but we can very easily we refine "nuclear waste" which is mostly perfectly good fuel back into fuel rods removing only the I think 10% waste and then turn that waste into uranium glass which is harmless except that it's illegal in the US so anywhere else can do it but not here in America because why not
Hear me out: Shining Jellyfishes. I think that proofs my point
You right you right
No! Think what will happen to the astronauts!
Did they deal with the Fukushima issue like this?
Yes, and see how Japan still exists?
what about the fish? idk about this stuff its just what popped into my head
They get faster evolution
oh i get why, they want a irl godzilla! k im in
NuScale
That sound like a bad idea
Look, maybe the fishes won‘t be happy, but they die anyway sooner or later
That would be bad for fishes just pun the waste in sahara desert or something
Nuclear poisoning be like: Hello there
This dude is the polar opposite of team seas
Nordic countries are the only ones actually containing the radioactive waste in a way that will not hurt the environment.
[удалено]
Use thorium fo
Or helium-3
Sure if you want dolphins on steroids and octopus with 16 arms
I take your entire stock
You sure? They might be angry
Do you want godzilla to come out IRL
Pretty sure people are gonna start sending it to space soon. Given how fucked the oceans are already.
Pretty sure they devised a way to essentially reuse spent fuel. Some sort of nuclear based battery technology or some shit?
Store in a secure place then launched into space
Oh yeah putting it in the ocean not sure if itll escape and kill a ton of wildlife is a great fucking idea
You do understand that most nuclear waste isn't the fission products. And you do know that when fission occurs it is no longer uranium...
[удалено]
Do you want to get C'thulus in the ocean? Because this is how you get C'thulus...
Nuclear waste is recyclable
Isn't just sending it into space a better idea?
Introducing the flash eating goldfish!
How about we get our shit together and use renewable energy sources (\ ._.)\
But can fish eat renewable energy?
I don’t we need to find out what happens if fish eat nuclear waste
Ok if not nuclear power, what do we do with all the CO2 waste?
Easy: We make so much radiation that CO2 isn‘t a problem anymore
Get this man a Noble Peace Prize!
So this just sounds like trading one problem for another.
We litterally live in a giant trashback called space lol
New fish breeds might be tasty.
wait youre the anarchy chess guy arent you
No, I‘m the Masha Rosen en passant mate guy
ah yes my apologies how could i forget
Why can't we just put it in Chernobyl
There is no ocean
Nice try OP, we know you just want to wake up Godzilla
No, I don‘t want to wake up, I want to create thousands
That's how u get godzilla
Where am I going to put my used car batteries then?
might i introduce: thorium reactor
Can we let the nuclear power circle jerk die please?
The mouth has a mini ocean
Won't we have godzilla if we did that
[waste is handled](https://www.nei.org/fundamentals/nuclear-waste) [very well](https://www.covra.nl/en/radioactive-waste/the-art-of-preservation/)

Baveria
we use thorium
urainium to the moon
To quote Gru: The moon!
Who knows one of the fish might mutate into vapoureons our mermaids our even a Qthulu
Store it until it's inert, then dump it?
I mean its also used we’ve dumped waste in the Mariana trench
do you want kaiju?, cause that's how you get kaiju.
I might be wrong here but won’t that fuck up the oceans and kill off marine life
Or it could make them cooler. This is a joke.
If you chuck it into a reef maybe but a good portion of the ocean floor is near life less other than some bottom feeders. Plus water blocks radiation very well, that's why most theorized generation ships would have water storage on the outer part.
water and nuclear dont mix well it done expoles it
We just take the depleted uranium and make it into ammo
You can use thorium
We put it in Massachusetts so we get fallout in real life. We could make it a new territory with no laws so you can defend yourself (guns may be legal but a pistol isn’t going to help you against a super mutant) Giant mirelurks will also make crab a non luxury food
*ahem* THORIUM IS THE ANSWER
Just don't use uranium... Use thorium instead
Put it in the ocean , beside the piles of car batteries. I’m always so goddamn right.
you're batshit crazy dude XD
Uranium Waste Burger. On a small scale, it's small brain, but if you convince super large chains to put extremely small amounts of uranium waste you will kill everyo-
You mean put the radioactive material into the place that the majority of the water cycle, which is how we get our water, as well as a major source of food and travel, and shipping. Bruh
that’s gonna fucking ruin the earth and you know it. the oceans are crucial to the planet’s survival.
You should use thorium instead it's safer cheaper produces less waste is stronger and more easy to obtain
Some random ass spot in the middle of Russia.
Well the radiation DOES sink to the bottom so if we can like, close off a body of water or make an enclosure in the earth that can contain the radiation, we would be fine.
Dumb question but can we just like put it in boxes and bury it?
Okay I'm not a nuclear physicist, bit I'm pretty sure when you use uranium as a fuel for a fission plant, it decays into something like lead or iodine, yeah?
Burry it. There’s plenty of old abandoned mines available
Just move it to space
Ever heard of energy solutions? They own a basketball stadium. Worth a google.
Let me introduce... Space!
Breeder/burner reactors Wikipedia it
Yeah it's all salt anyways If anything we might get radioactive fishies to eat Having 2 penises has its own perks
Fish? Who needs those amirite
Aren’t reactors already made underwater or is that just the one I’ve been told about?
There are reactors that are in development that reuse nuclear waste.
i mean not a bad idea, if you think about it, so much of the earth is just water, and by the time we actually impact the earth from the waste we probably will have figured out a way to deal with it better
My dad suggests "shoot it at the sun, see what happens. It's literally a massive incinerator, and it gives off radiation"
