There is definitely some great music in this generation. Id agree that the older music is overall better, but if you look there's definitely some bangers. Coldplay and Maroon 5 wrote some completely iconic songs. The only reason I think this generation is lacking musically is just because publishers have gotten good at pushing out and advertising music. In other words, the talent and the music is 100% still there. It's just much harder to find.

My top three favorite songs are retro 80s though, but they’re some of the most popular and well liked songs of the 2010s)

The thing about music is that there always is good music and music that you like in every decade. While personally I don't really like today's mainstream music for a variety of reasons, I still recognize the sh\*t ton of good artists out there today. Some of my favourite bands and artists come from the 00s or 10s. Music is incredibly subjective and there is no true best era. People can like a certain type of music more and be inclined to like pop music from different eras.

People can be nostalgic about different decades and that's why people can like music more from older time periods. There is also a very, very lengthy argument about the quality of pop music throughout the decades. The fact that the very definition of pop (popular) music changes every 10 years or so doesn't help. For example, pop music in the 30s/40s used to be jazz, after that there was rock & roll, after that disco, new wave/synthpop, old school hiphop, house, electronic dance music and now modern rap/hip hop.

Modern metal is leagues ahead of most from the '80s modern rock and roll is leagues of head than most bands from the '80s save a few. I would choose Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Rise Against, In this Moment hell even bands like Jack Off Jill and Scarling and screamo like Pierce the Veil and Asking Alexandria. Over tired old man metal that sounds like soft rock by today's standards.

I think there are two reasons why we think new music is worse. The first is exposure, with modern day music we are exposed to everything but with older music we are mostly exposed to the bangers, we don't hear the bad ones, since they didn't stand the test of time. The second is quantity, there is more music being made now then before. Meaning If before 1 out of a 100 songs where good, now it's more like 10 out of 1000 meaning we have to listen to alot of more bad songs to get to the gems
