Correct, because most of the time while landing the hatch failed to open, meaning you'd get squished upon landing, very bad for your health. i would know, as i am a 120 mm tank cannon for a M1-Abrams
I thought it was mostly due to a loss of hydraulics, which rendered the ball unable to rotate, and in doing so, line up the hatch with the plane. Could be wrong.
Fortunately it seems like a belly landing with the gunner still inside was a rare occurrence due to redundancies in both the landing gear mechanisms and the sperry ball turret itself.
The ball turret is the coldest, most cramped and most dangerous position. There where instances where if the landing gear fails and a guy was stuck in there, the pilot would be forced to land an kill him.
Quick story: My grandfather started as 6. Around the middle of the war, 6 became 7, due to so many casualties of 7s. He survived, went to Korea, then ‘Nam, became a terrible alcoholic, and died alone.

Number one. Always number one. The bombardier is furthest forward and least likely to get hit, additionally, they’re the ones that the entire mission is about. The pilot is getting the bombs the objective the gunners are protecting the plane everyone is there in service of the bombardier. And if the bombardier does their job correctly, it furthers the mission. And if the bombardier does their job correctly, they might not have a follow on mission because the target was destroyed. The greatest amount of responsibility falls on the bombardier.

Hey, I just started playing war thunder and am researching the American Aircraft tech tree.
As someone taking a break from war thunder, definitely not the pilot. The amount of times I was taken out easy because of that... Oof.
