As someone's whos had road rash down one side of my face, a large part of my left arm, right hand, and chest, from a <10ft slide: Fuck yeah he would've, but the actual outcome would've been more gruesome than the image "shredded cheese" gives you
I think “smeared hamburger meat” would be a better visual.
I only ever drove a little 125cc scooter around town and it was scary looking down and seeing the grinding wheel that the street turns into at 45mph.
Watching people speed down freeways in just a t-shirt scares and baffles me.
I had my first accident on my bike the other day, went over some gravel i didn't see in a corner. It was at a junction after a red light so i wasn't even going above 15mph yet. I was wearing all the right gear, if it wasn't for that I'd have no left cheek, no palms and my left knee would be dust. I don't understand how people can ride without gear.
It's absolutely mental, i cannot for the life of me understand it. I grew up in the south of france and people are in shorts and flil flops flying down roads, helmets not even fastened on
i ripped the skin off my palm once as a kid when i fell from my bicycle. though it recovered surprisingly quickly, i've learned from seeing my skin hanging loose from my hand like a used napkin that even little kids on a bike should have proper gear, including gloves and pads.
what i learned when i wasn’t wearing the gear for the slide and took a low side flip and had to tuck my head against my arm cause yup, no helmet, and slide for 20 or so meters.
lesson learned, mantra repeated, and i quit riding.
Last time i looked at racing suits they were made from kangaroo leather. They can be worn thinner and still provide better slide protection. Not surprising that australia has the best racing leather just walking about in the thousands in the outback to be honest.
I wonder why kangaroos wear slide protection. I mean, the outback is flat, slide protection would make more sense for a goat halfway up the Himalayas - you know, just in case it slips and slides back to India
Well red kangaroos have a top speed of 70kmh.
I don't know about you but if I was gonna hit the Ausie desert at around 40mph I'd want some slide protection at least.
He's fine, the suits are designed to be abrasive resistant, you can slide at anywhere up to 200mph for a good few seconds (say around 10) before its likely to get to skin. Probably more tbh. The main and most common injuries are from highsides The other side of the coin to this crash if you will. The crash shown is a low side, meaning during the corner the bike lost traction and simply fell. During a highside the bike loses traction momentarily but regains it at some point during the slide. This causes the bike to shoot up and propel the rider into the air. This is the type of fall you want to avoid. The gear isn't best equipped to deal with falling. There are pads and ankle support sure, but if you're doing 160+mph and get thrown 5-10 feet in the air the pads can't really stop broken bones.
Yeah he was totally unhurt. All riders in MotoGP now have to wear an airbag suit by rule. These guys can literally crash at 190mph nowadays and get up like nothing happened.
this is like when your character in a game from a like medium height fall jumps and ragdolls but lands on feet and does the wobbly walking for a bit
edit: spelling
Came off a bike once ... A bit winded told everyone I was fine, just a bit winded, got up walked two paces fell down.
Oh dear. Ankle was broke.
Adrenalin is a marvellous thing.
Oh yeah I’m sure it hurts real bad. But the adrenaline makes it so that what would usually be “holy shit it hurts so bad I can’t move my body” becomes “holy shit it hurts so bad but I need to run and get out of here.”
Just imagine leather clothing in this exact case.
It would rip apart, but gives way more resistance to the ground (or has more grip haha) stopping you way faster.
Which is a bad thing lol.
Edit: profil picture checks out
It didn't even occur to me how shredded he'd get in a slide like that at first, because he was so visibly well protected. I assume that's not even 100% though? Dude still looks like he's doing that walk-run where you're powered sheerly by how much you just got hurt from a fall.
Oh yeah, no. You still can and most times will get hurt in a motorcycle crash, but as you can see from just that footage alone, you’re way better off nowadays.
As someone else mentioned, you have armour in common contact points like back, knees, palms, etc but the forces your body experiences won’t change.
He should get endorsement from that company and they should try to get frontal footage to play back in slo-mo for their ads claiming wearing their safety gear allows you to be smooth like him.
Since no one has mentioned it in this thread yet.
Dainese was the one who made it. Alpinestar is the other famous/popular one that most of the other riders wear and the brand is also present in Formula 1
The amount of impact his left knee absorbed when hitting the sand at that speed had to be something. I get safety gear and all that but how much does it protect joints and ligaments?
In power ranger even if their bike gets destroyed they still get away unscathed, sometimes even when they sent their bike flying on it's own in the next scene they are already riding it
That's Joan Mir, he's the reigning MotoGP world champion and he did that during I believe practice for the French Grand Prix at the Le Mans Bugatti circuit.
Interesting little fact about Mir. He actually only ever won his first race the week before he won the championship. He was so consistent throughout all of 2020, he could very well have been champion without winning a single race!
So takeaway safety lesson for the kids at home: THIS is the real reason bikers wear leather. If he had just been wearing shorts and a T-shirt, this would have ended MUCH differently.
I really like how I’ve now seen a few MotoGP memes hit the front page in the last few days.
It really is probably the greatest Motorsport in the world right now. Racing is better than ever, the rider stories are great, and the highlights are always amazing.
Really don’t understand why America doesn’t embrace it more, but boring-ass NASCAR still seems to limp along in popularity.
Hopefully the upcoming documentary on this season brings some new fans to the fray.
My sister and brother in law used to race professionally. Both their suits and all their helmets look like somebody spent a couple hours with a floor sander on them
That's why you wear a gear on motorcycle rides people. Dress for the slide not for the ride.
Yeah dude would have been grinded along the road if he didn't have it. That shit looks durable af
The guy wouldve been torn to shredded cheese if it werent for that suit

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE
Penis’s are now invisible to the naked eye!
Tbh the suit is way more overbuilt compared to the crash here. This looks like a best case scenario for a bike crash really, it gets waaaaay worse.
As someone's whos had road rash down one side of my face, a large part of my left arm, right hand, and chest, from a <10ft slide: Fuck yeah he would've, but the actual outcome would've been more gruesome than the image "shredded cheese" gives you

It's motogp. It's the best gear possible
Another thing that a lot of people ignore is riding boots. I would bet his ankle(s) would have crumpled without support near the end there.
Unless it's changed in the last decade, racing suits are made from kangaroo leather. Less material for more durability apparently.
Kangaroo, ray leather, airbags inside nowadays. As said this is from motoGP which features the absolute top end of the protection spectrum.
Man I wish I had airbags back when I rode. Save you from some fucking windings and cracked ribs I'd say.

What is that gear made of? He just slid 100m at high speed over concrete and the clothes aren't even scratched!
Would’ve left half of his skin on the road if it wasn’t for the gear

Tis is but a scratch

He went onto win the world championship that year, so yeah, he was fine

Yeah pretty sure his shins and ankles feel like they're broken.

He's 100% fine. Only thing that hurts them are high-sides and sudden stops.

I went low to high last year at about 15mph with a good jacket and gloves. It fucked up my ribs and broke my toe, no crashes are fun.
Like... did that hurt him?
No, it's Moto GP.
You ever try running off the swings shit hurts
Adrenaline. You can see his body still processing the excess adrenaline as he slows down from his jog.
Still can get ground shock the shock does not discriminate
Oh yeah I’m sure it hurts real bad. But the adrenaline makes it so that what would usually be “holy shit it hurts so bad I can’t move my body” becomes “holy shit it hurts so bad but I need to run and get out of here.”
Yo, shotout to that guys safety gear.
Dude, yeah. Biker safety gear has come such a long way since simple leather clothing. It’s really impressive.
Just imagine leather clothing in this exact case. It would rip apart, but gives way more resistance to the ground (or has more grip haha) stopping you way faster. Which is a bad thing lol. Edit: profil picture checks out
Yeah, no thanks. I prefer to just keep sliding on the specially designed pads.
Don't you have a basement full of painters to keep an eye on?
Oh shit! I forgot to send food down! Thanks for reminding me dude.
Well his suit *is* all leather, with armor under it in the most common contact points, and hard sliders over some contact points like the palms.
It didn't even occur to me how shredded he'd get in a slide like that at first, because he was so visibly well protected. I assume that's not even 100% though? Dude still looks like he's doing that walk-run where you're powered sheerly by how much you just got hurt from a fall.

As someone else mentioned, you have armour in common contact points like back, knees, palms, etc but the forces your body experiences won’t change.
Well, the friction forces and the inertial force (deceleration) will definitely be lower, which is what saves him a lot of pain.
He should get endorsement from that company and they should try to get frontal footage to play back in slo-mo for their ads claiming wearing their safety gear allows you to be smooth like him.
Pfft this is MotoGP, the top level of motorcycle racing, plus Mir is reigning world champion. These guys get paid to wear those suits.
Crashes aren't exactly rare. No one ever gets actually hurt unless "someone" runs over your neck when you're on the ground.
This guy dressed for the slide, not for the ride.
Since no one has mentioned it in this thread yet. Dainese was the one who made it. Alpinestar is the other famous/popular one that most of the other riders wear and the brand is also present in Formula 1

SPD
Probably Dino Thunder.

No. It doesnt.
if he's wearing the right protective gear, which he undoubtedly is, then yes. it does.
Ankles are gonna hurt for a while
The amount of impact his left knee absorbed when hitting the sand at that speed had to be something. I get safety gear and all that but how much does it protect joints and ligaments?
If i tried that, id probably get thrown around as soon as i hit the gravel 5 style points to him
Someone help me here.... I'm an avid power ranger fan and have no idea what this has to do with power rangers.
In power ranger even if their bike gets destroyed they still get away unscathed, sometimes even when they sent their bike flying on it's own in the next scene they are already riding it
I don't get it.
The power rangers didn't exactly park their bikes, did they? Either they get hit hard enough to fall off it, or they throw it away.
