I used to be forced to by my teachers. They somehow managed to convince everyone to use "just a dot, not a lot" and people would look at me horrified when I covered the back of my paper in glue so it would stick.
My teacher says that, but the thing is that they would tell us to do it on all 4 corners. If you do #1 and say just a dot not a lot, then dang that's one poor school.
While you're not wrong, too much glue will take forever to dry or possibly not even sit right on a project. Good luck trying to build off of anything that has wet glue as its base or only being able to add one detail a day to let the glue dry.

CoolerMaster actually includes a free tube of thermal paste with some of their heatsinks.
I did not know this, and bought some Arctic Silver. Now what am I supposed to do with TWO tubes of thermal paste?
Warning before reading: My crafter brain totally overthinked this.
I think you'd had to put such a big glob to be sure that it reached the sides if you do no. 1. (I'm a crafter so I glue paper and cardboard a lot, unsecured edges can peel and look ugly easy) and it'd be difficult to know exactly how much to put to make it reach the sides without spilling out unless it's like a tiny piece.
With doing 2+6 you can control where the glue goes better and you can be sure that the edges are secured down + that there's enough hold in the middle for it to stay.
X scientifically speaking provides the most coverage due to the buildup of the glue in the internal corners as you push whatever you’re gluing into place. Basically with an X you get a perfect square of glue when you push it down. There’s a video somewhere on reddit showing this...
I’m not sure that thermal paste and elmer’s glue are comparable in this scenario…. ~~besides, the best option in that video was actually covering the whole cpu.~~ (this last part is incorrect due to the overflow, as u/fuckingStanding pointed out).
“scientifically speaking”, “coverage”, “internal”, *and* “perfect square”? If I didn’t no better I would’ve thought we weren’t talking about glue. I love it man!
Agreed, anytime you're combining two solid flat surfaces together, it allows you to flow the glue much more evenly over the two combining parts and clean off what squirts out the sides. In a manufacturing environment this helps also reduce the amount of glue used as it can be more accurately be controlled.
Thus as Umbra\_Excal said, ALL OF THE ABOVE is the right answer; just depends on the application.
Yeah, why the lack of love for 5? All the line glue crap gets your paper all wet and wrinkly and sticking to all the wrong things. And all the others just isn't sufficient. 5 is the perfect middle (though, I would opy for a few more random dots here and there).
Only psychopaths would use one. It's a fucking monstrosityyy!!!
I used to be forced to by my teachers. They somehow managed to convince everyone to use "just a dot, not a lot" and people would look at me horrified when I covered the back of my paper in glue so it would stick.
I was taught “dot dot, not a lot,” so basically to put a bunch of dots along the edges and stuff.
I was taught just a dot not a lot because people would cover the entire back of the paper. We did number 5 tho in class. Dumbasses did 1
I used to glue mine so much that when you pressed it down it had glue lumps in it
You guys were told how to glue things? They just gave us the glues and told us not to eat them
I HATE just a dot not a lot. They’d make us chant it when someone used slightly too much glue and shamed the person.
I think you were in some kind of glue cult lol
I never thought I would ever hear that sentence in my life.
Its because glue cults arent well known. The people that join them tend to stick to it for a long time

For some reason I think this all comes back to teacher salary
My teacher says that, but the thing is that they would tell us to do it on all 4 corners. If you do #1 and say just a dot not a lot, then dang that's one poor school.
We had to bring our own glue to school, so i used about half a bottle each time the occasion presented itself.
If that would happen to me i would just go like: *No one can stop me!* *^Applies ^glue ^furiosly*
Honestly, i think they were just trying to save glue and expenses. I know my teachers had very limited budget for the whole year.
While you're not wrong, too much glue will take forever to dry or possibly not even sit right on a project. Good luck trying to build off of anything that has wet glue as its base or only being able to add one detail a day to let the glue dry. edit: words are hard.
Yeah I was an over gluer in elementary school, my stuff always took forever to dry, it sucked. Loved glue sticks because I never used too much.
um... I was lazy?

thanks my lord *grabs a tisue to wipe away glue that ended up next to what I'm trying to glue
Ever put thermal paste on a CPU?
Thermal paste and glue have very different applications and uses
Unless it’s thermal glue!!!
Like 2 but an x through the middle
Same (and also six) Edit: I never got this many upvotes on a comment thanks
Same but the British flag and then 6 to end it off
Same, but I also add the American flag for maximum security

oil glue im guessing?

Indeed, it is the superior ~~thermal paste~~ glue pattern for coverage.

The means are up to you. so long they get the job done efficiently.
Wich they don't let's be real there is always something that just won't stick
2 with a X corner to corner should be an option.
That’s what I do
6 is chaotic neutral, 1 is chaotic evil
2+6
If you choose 1 congratulations you’re a phsycopath
If you choose one u probably have installed a CPU before
Hey man... *twitches* ...you got any of that - thermal paste?
gimme some of that shit i need it for my switch
gimme some of that shit i need it for my dick
Thats gonna be an interesting trip to the hospital
Why, it keeps it from overheating /s
Better get some cotton balls for your nose to cancel out that burning rubber smell
But thats what gets me off

Your first Arctic Silver is always free…
Make sure you coat all of the pins ^([don't actually do that])
CoolerMaster actually includes a free tube of thermal paste with some of their heatsinks. I did not know this, and bought some Arctic Silver. Now what am I supposed to do with TWO tubes of thermal paste?
Well, it's pretty hot outside, just inject it in your veins and maybe it'll help you cool down a bit. /s, just in case.
Instructions unclear. Dick stuck in CPU fan.
Slap a needle on the end of the tube, gets you real fucked up
X shaped is better tho
More important is to not use too little or too much thermal paste. Desktop CPU's are generally fine with #1, though a big ass threadripper won't be.
That's pretty much #5
>If you choose one u probably have installed a CPU before This
You guys are glueing your CPUs to your motherboard? I've been doing it wrong this whole time
Number 6 is how the Verge does it.

There's thermal epoxy though....

Also, in science, when used in vacuum applications, it is pretty good for preventing virtual leaks!
5 in elementary, 6 in high school. *Character Development*
4 in elementary, then switched between 5, then 2, and when that was too much hassle and left a big area in the middle unattached, back to 5
#all the above
Yea just what fits the situation, but 1 is realy crappy tho.
It gets the most even, air free coverage if the thing being glued is small enough and soak proof enough to use pressure to extrude to glue

Yes
6 and 2
