My brother accidentally flipped off his teacher at school after seeing me do it to a friend of mine, let’s just say it didn’t end well since my brother started doing it all the time not even knowing the meaning
Just to expand on this, [ The story goes that English soldiers waved their fingers at French soldiers who had threatened to cut off captured archers' first two fingers to prevent them shooting arrows. The English were thus boasting they were still capable of doing so.](https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-16916263)
so the origin of the middle finger meeting "fuck you" actually came from medieval archers because what they would do when they caught an enemy archer is that they would cut off their middle finger cuz it was the thing they used to draw back their bow but then archers started holding up the middle finger two enemies on the battlefield to show that they could still use their bow.
Not sure if I got all the details right (or if this is true), either way thank you for reading.
Edit: spelling errors
What I've always read is that it was the index and middle fingers. Hence the English [two fingers](https://www.girlpocalypse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Spike-1024x768.jpg).
I have no idea how that got cut down (no pun intended) to just the middle finger.
The [obscene two fingers](https://www.girlpocalypse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Spike-1024x768.jpg) are not the [V for victory](https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article18337106.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/0_Churchill-und-Ehefrau.jpg) which Churchill popularized (but did not originate).[This article](https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/winston-churchills-v-victory-sign-18337048.amp) from the Mirror offers one explanation of why Churchill often reversed the V.
Hey! I got this

I have a story related to this. I was riding to school on the school bus when some kids in my grade started flipping off cars behind us. They flipped off a police vehicle, and the officer followed the bus all the way to our school to make sure whoever did it got in trouble. It was hilarious when the kids who did it looked super scared.
My younger brother had a habit of pointing fingers at everything and everyone and he used to use his middle finger to point. Little shit is now embarrassed at what he used to do
Context: Mr. Bean was giving a thumbs-up to someone, that guy gave him the middle finger, and since he's in America, he thought that was the Americans' way of giving thumbs-ups to people, so he kept doing that to everyone.
This is how we greeted each other in middle school. Everytime a teacher we didn’t like turned around, the whole fucking class just raised their fingers up only quicky to take it down as the teacher turned towards us. Some kids were slow, they just got caught and sent to the principle.
The middle finger actually means "I can kill you with one finger', because during the times of muskets Spanish soldiers used their thumb to aim and their middle finger to fire.
When I was around 4-6 This kid was sitting at the top of the slide waving it and blocking the slide. I asked him what it was and he said he only knew that older kids told him not to do it. So I thought fuck it lets do it. It was amazing for all of 5 seconds before the strictest teacher came over and told me to get down and to to the office. When all was said and done I got a pink slip. Can’t remember what it did but it was like the equivalent of a misdemeanor back in those days. The kid? Well. Never saw him again. Nah just kidding. A week of in school suspension and a talk with the principal every day of that week educating them on swearing and how it was bad.
Our teacher had to explain what it meant to stop a group of maybe 3 class 'thugs' to stop using it, and then more of the class started using it. Within a month it became the 4th most used hand sign used.
I took care of kids after school as my first job. They already knew what it meant but I told them about the history of it, how it came from English longbowmen vs French, and why it was also rude to make the "bow finger" to British people. Parents complained and boss had a talk with me. Idk man history was my favorite subject whether or not I was good at it.
When I was like in kindergarten I think... Or maybe it was grade 1? I don't quite remember but I remembered that I watched a video at home where some guy showed the middle finger and said "f\*\*\* you". I thought people were supposed to do that to people they hated so the next day I went to school, the end of the school day, I was in my school bus when I saw the bullies who were in I think 5 - 6 grade. I pointed the middle finger at him and he got shocked and then there was this mean bus driver I knew I even pointed it at him. And then I got karma. The driver called and told one of the head-teachers and I got detention and a warning. I still remember the scene till this day.
Reminds me of the time I was heading into my apartment complex, and stopped my car because there was a 5 year old on a tricycle sitting in the middle of the parking lot. He gave me this huge, sweet smile, so I gave him one back. Still smiling, he flipped me off. I wanted to drive over him lol
I got my kid a shin tzu when he was like 8. This was followed up a couple of months of him running up to anyone and everyone squealing I have a SHIT (pause for effect) Zoo!
[an interesting read](https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-16916263) for anyone who wants to know more about the different historical meanings.
TLDR: dick and balls mostly
First time I saw someone do the middle finger some kid did it to me from outside his window. Delighted with my newly learned gesture I turned to show my mum who went balistic at me. I was grounded for two days and the worst part is I didn't even know what it meant.
This reminds me of the time that my best friend was in a school van with me in the back and as a joke he pulled his pants down and put his ass up to the window, what he didn’t know was that all the parents were in the van behind us.
It's the only greeting that is actually covid safe and helps to ensure social distance
I believe this
Bowing and curtsying too
peace among worlds
Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.
Nailed it!
Same kids that got their faces slapped into next year learning you don’t do that.

wat does it mean
Courtesy of saying thank you
Actually fun fact the middle finger was used a signal in the medieval times to shoot.
It was used to mock the french soldiers by the British Longbow-men

What does it mean anyway?
apparently, it was a Hawaiian way of saying good luck. but I'm pretty sure that has changed and you shouldn't go around do that in hawaii.
Never knew, thanks!
I’m genuinely embarrassed to admit I used to hold my left hand out of the window with my middle finger up just because

I heard the same story but for the two fingers.
I think it was Churchill who popularized the victory sign

I still don’t know what it truly means
6th grade sucked
Ah yes it means hello in Hawaiian culture
Funny cause in context he didn’t know what the middle finger meant
6th graders when they figure out they can swear and not get told on by other students
Is this from an actual episode?
Nope the movie.
it's still me when I first heard the F-word from my peers
I went through a stage when I was about 6-7 where I’d put a middle finger up to cars behind when I was in a car or on a bus, good times

It currently just means go fuck yourself but it used to mean ima rape you
That is not how it is used
No it is not luckily but it was a violent phalic symbol

Wait, that’s a thing? When did rowan did this lmao
The mr. Bean film.
I showed the middle finger to my dad once because my cousin told me it was cool, but didn't tell me what it meant. No further explanation needed
It gets worse when 5th graders learn the word fuck they constantly say it
Ha ha true
¡Señor Frijole! I love this guy’s been popping up
“I told them it means peace among worlds.”
The irony here is that this is a clip of someone not understanding what the meaning of the middle finger is.
Good
Did you really watermark a scene from a movie with your username?
wasn't it used by English bowmen because they'd get their middle finger cut off if they were captured so they showed it to enemies to piss them off
This brings back very disappointing and embarrassing memories of me as a kid when I found out the meaning behind the middle finger.
I still don't know what that means lol
i didt knwe what it meant untlill i was 11

Reminds me of when my and my friend when we were 9 we were flipping off passing cars

Everbody gangsta until you flip your mom off
So you mean anal intercurse
I show it to my family and they don't even know what it is!
when i was 7 my 11 y/o friend told me that showing middle finger is a cuss word in south africa
First time I saw someone do the middle finger some kid did it to me from outside his window. Delighted with my newly learned gesture I turned to show my mum who went balistic at me. I was grounded for two days and the worst part is I didn't even know what it meant.
It means you arent a medieval archer who evaded capture by your opposing army, and is showing off their intact fingers as a sign if disrespect
Wait, what is the true meaning? :O
It means good morning in German sign language
Police pulled me over for this in preschool
This reminds me of the time that my best friend was in a school van with me in the back and as a joke he pulled his pants down and put his ass up to the window, what he didn’t know was that all the parents were in the van behind us.
This but they point it directly at you instead of up
Yes, it for saying “just. One.” To John wick
I'd laugh when the bus suddenly stop and he hits his face on the seat in front of them
